Hi everyone, I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.

Hi everyone! I’m heading back to Thailand in July 2026 with a stopover in Cambodia to visit the Angkor site. After Angkor, I’ve booked a stay on Ko Chang island. Does anyone know if there are direct transport options from Cambodia to Ko Chang without having to go back through Bangkok? That would be amazing!! I think there are, but I’d need more details!! We have the opportunity to get away for a little two-week trip at the very beginning of January, just the two of us, without our kids. Because of the kids, we haven’t traveled much in Asia, so we’d love to take advantage of their absence to explore Thailand. Even though I’m used to planning our trips, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed this time.

We’d like to visit Bangkok and head south by renting a car (we have an international driver’s license, and my husband has driven on the left before). I’ve managed to sketch out a rough itinerary that might work for us, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

To set the scene: we haven’t booked anything yet, we don’t like spending hours on the beach (though a little time at the end of the day is fine), we love walking and sightseeing, and what we enjoy most is being independent (so if we can avoid group tours, that’s ideal).

After that intro, here’s the rough outline of our itinerary: Day 0: Paris-Bangkok flight Days 1, 2, and 3: Bangkok (Wat Pho, Grand Palace, Wat Arun, markets, boat ride through the khlongs, Jim Thompson House) Day 4: Ayutthaya Day 5: Pick up a rental car and head to Sam Roi Yot Day 6: Sam Roi Yot and Prachuap Khiri Khan Day 7: Drive south – overnight near Surat Thani Day 8: Uthayan Tham Khao Na Nai, then drive to Ao Nang (staying near Tubkaek) Days 9 and 10: Boat trips (Railay, Ko Hong, etc.) Day 11: Drive to Phang Nga with a few stops along the way Day 12: Boat tour (mangroves and Ko Tapu) Day 13: Drive to Phuket Airport and return flight

A few questions and doubts: - I’d considered Cheow Lan Lake but read some not-so-great reviews (crowds, just 3 viewpoints, and the rest was meh). What do you think? - Can we start from Ao Thalane Pier for trips to Ko Hong and Ko Tapu? - I’m not thrilled about driving through Bangkok, but I’m not sure where to rent a car west of the city (since we won’t return it to the same place, I assume it’s best to target rental companies at airports).

Combiné Thaïlande – Cambodge – Laos durant 2 mois début 2021.

Bonjour, Nous prévoyons un voyage de 2 mois, du 15 janvier au 15 mars 2021, avec un AR Nice - Bangkok. Ce voyage sera un combiné Thaïlande – Cambodge – Laos. Nous comptons commencer par la région de Koh Tao durant 15 jours environ, où nous avons de la famille. Nous avons déjà visité la Thaïlande auparavant et nous ne comptons pas le refaire, sauf, après la région de Koh Tao, Bangkok et ses alentours. Puis de Koh Tao, nous pensons remonter sur Bangkok et immédiatement nous diriger vers la frontière du Cambodge, et visiter le Cambodge, que nous ne connaissons pas. Puis ensuite remonter ensuite sur le Laos, et visiter le Laos, que nous ne connaissons pas. Enfin, peut-être prendre un vol Louang Prabang (ou Vientiane) pour Bangkok vers le 11 mars avant notre retour en France. Nous venons vers vous et ce forum pour nous aider, avec votre expérience, à composer ce voyage. Rien n’est réellement figé. Mais nous avons l’habitude de l’Asie, pour la faire depuis 5 ans en formule sacs à dos et Guesthouses (nous sommes un couple de jeunes retraités assez sportifs). Merci de nous indiquer quel circuit nous pourrions faire, avec des visites variées ; nous aimons bien la nature, les paysages, les gens, et découvrir. I really loved Thailand, but it was too touristy for my taste. So I'm hesitating about going back and wondering if Cambodia or Vietnam would be less crowded with tourists...

Il a tellement de discussion sur le sujet et d'avis divergeants (qui dérivent parfois en débats houleux) que je suis un peu perdue. Du coup je me suis dit que j'allais rajouter une 1001 discussion 😉

Alors voila le topo, nous sommes un jeune couple et avions l'habitude de voyager dans des pays plutôt "développés et Occidentaux" (Europe, USA, NZ, Chili, Argentine...) en mode road trip et camping plus ou moins sauvage pour y pratiquer des activités plutôt engagées en autonomie (Canyoning, Raft, Trek). Mais depuis, BB est arrivé et nous devons revoir notre façon de voyager. Du coup je me dit, pourquoi ne pas profiter de ne plus pouvoir faire d’activités engagées pour aller dans des lieux un peu plus dépaysants, moins a la mode occidentale, et avec des plages et du soleil en janvier ou avril (et oui BB adore se baigner). Et la je pense a l’Asie et notamment a la Thaïlande. Nous aurons 3 semaines devant nous en janvier ou avril.

Alors évidement je cherche l'impossible mais peu être que quelque chose se rapprocherait de cela: - Des iles calmes et pas bétonnées. Nous aimons la solitude (relative) et ne sommes pas intéressés par les grandes villes, les grands hotels et les boites de nuit. - plein de choses a faire en autonomie, Snorkling, Plages, balades, rando, kayak de mer, villages authentiques. Nous ne sommes pas intéressés par les excursions en groupe ni par l'exploitation des éléphants. - la possibilité de séjourner sur plusieurs iles en restant environ 5 jours au même endroit a chaque fois. L’idée c'est tout de même de se poser et profiter sans se lasser... Nous ne voulons pas avoir a prendre l'avion en milieu de séjour. - sur place la possibilité de se déplacer sans difficulté, a pied ou en louant un tuktuk par exemple?

Golf de Thaïlande ou cote Ouest, je ne sais pas. Du moment qu'il n'est pas trop compliquée de s'y rendre.

Ok l’équation est compliquée, mais vous allez trouver j'en suis sure, et si la réponse se trouve dans un autre pays je suis preneuse aussi. Je pense a la Malaisie par exemple, d’ailleurs je vais poster sur cette destination également. En revanche la réponse " ne voyagez pas en Thaïlande avec un BB" ne sera pas retenue ce n'est pas la question.

Je souhaite visiter le nord de Chiang Rai, précisément Thaton puis Mae Salong et Mae Chan. Sur le site du Ministère des affaires étrangères, il est formellement déconseillé de se rendre sur la zone frontalière avec la Birmanie mais la carte reste imprécise, une bande rouge le long de la frontière est dessinée sans aucun nom de village, aussi impossible de savoir si ces villages sont concernés. We’re planning to visit Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap, the Angkor temples, Kompong Luong, then head down to Kampot, Kep, and finish our trip on the islands of Koh Rong. Has anyone done this trip recently? Any great spots to recommend? Neighborhoods to stay in Phnom Penh (lively but not too touristy)? Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

Here’s my plan:

BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa

Bangkok -> Chiang Mai by overnight train in first-class sleeper

CHIANG MAI (6 days/6 nights): Mae Hong Son – Hot springs – Chiang Dao – caves – Lamphun – other places to be decided on the spot based on what’s worth seeing and transport options

Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI (7 days/8 nights): Fang – Tha Ton – Chiang Saen – Doi Tung – Chiang Khong – Doi Ang Khang, Phu Chi Fah, etc.

Chiang Rai -> Phrae

PHRAE (4 days/5 nights): Lampang and surrounding areas, depending on what’s interesting to see

Phrae -> Loei

LOEI (4 days/5 nights): Phu Kradung – Chiang Khan and surrounding areas, depending on what’s worth seeing

Loei -> Buriram

PHIMAI (Nakhon Ratchasima/Khorat) (5 days/6 nights): Phimai – Prasat Muang Tam – Phanom Rung – Prasat Phanom Wan

Phimai -> Khorat (airport or train station) -> Bangkok (overnight in Bangkok)

Hello, I’m starting to plan my adventure in Cambodia. I’ve read a lot of your posts and really appreciate all your articles. Now it’s my turn to share my plans with you: 12/01 arrival in PP 13/01 arrival in SR where I’ll meet up with 2 friends for 6 days exploring the temples and surrounding areas 19/01 I’ll leave and finish the trip solo. I fly back on 29/01 at 8 PM, so I’ve got 10 days for a little immersion. The dilemma is whether to: # head to Battambang, then make my way to PP, Kampot, and 2 nights by the sea # go to Kratie and head down to Kampot with 2 nights by the sea (or, to cut down on kilometers, go via Kampong Cham to Kampot). Option 2 is my preference. I’m almost 70 and not too keen on rushing 😅 Thanks in advance for your time and any helpful tips! Françoise

Je compte partir en mars et avril, dates non définies, au Vietnam et au Cambodge. Je pense 25 - 28 jours au Vietnam et un peu moins au Cambodge, en revenant peut-être par Bangkok juste quelques jours si billet avion moins cher.

Pour le Vietnam, je me cantonnerai "juste" sur Hanoï et ses environs, le Nord Ouest avec Sapa, Bac Ha pour le marché si ça vaut vraiment le détour, le lac Thac Ba. Pour le Nord Est les chutes de Ban Gioc, les lacs de Ba Bê, et bien sur toujours au Nord la région de la baie d'Along, probablement à Cat Ba ... ?

Pour le Cambodge, rien de bien défini encore, sauf bien sur la région d'Angkor. J'attends vos suggestions car rapport à la saison.

Je prends mon temps pour voyager, c'est à dire que je préfère en faire moins mais profiter les sites plus longtemps que la plupart des touristes. Je pense ainsi rester au moins 5 jours sur Hanoï, voire plus ... ?

So happy to discover by chance that VoyageForum is back! We’re leaving in a few days for Thailand with our two kids, aged 12 and 15. We’re considering stopping by Khao Sok but don’t want to do a typical 2D/1N or 3D/2N excursion with an overnight stay on the lake—it’s way out of our budget 🤪. Still, the place seems worth the detour. We’ve planned to spend 2 nights there (arriving in the late afternoon on the first day) and I’d love to do a full-day private boat tour on the lake and a hike (half-day or full-day). Do you think it’s doable to book on the spot if we arrive a bit late on the first day? Or is it better to book in advance? None of the websites for booking these services inspire confidence—I get the feeling it’s a real lottery afterward for getting an interesting and friendly guide. But I’m worried it’ll be the same on-site since everything seems so standardized. Do you have any firsthand experience? Maybe even a Facebook contact or something for a guide? Are the prices still really that expensive if we don’t stay overnight on the lake? I’ll admit I’m not sure if we should even stop there anymore...

Sawadee krap! En mars prochain, jedébarquerai à Bangkok et avant d'aller sur mon île secrète, je vais faire un détour au nord de Bangkok pour aller visiter deux vignobles thaïs; Gran Monte Estate et PB Valley Winery (et peut-être Village Farm & Winery).

J'aimerais connaître les meilleurs moyens de transports possibles (taxi, bus, train?) pour se rendre dans ce coin-là (Nakhon Ratchasima 30320) de Bangkok (Dusit) et les prix moyens que je peux m'attendre à payer, le temps pour s'y rendre, etc. Et tant qu'à faire, une petite GH bien située et pas trop chère comme pied-à-terre. Je pense y rester deux jours, peut-être trois car il y beaucoup à voir dans cette région.

I’m heading to Thailand for the first time at the end of January 2026 for two weeks. I’m traveling with someone who’s already been there, so we’re planning to hit some of the must-see spots but also visit places my partner wants to see—like Krabi, for example. We want a bit of everything: cities, food, culture, walks, but also beach time and relaxation. I’d love your thoughts on this itinerary idea—is it doable without feeling too rushed? We’ve got 16 nights there. There’s a part of the trip that’s still up in the air where I’m not sure what to do. Either we add a national park or a city like Erawan? The goal is to see beautiful landscapes, waterfalls (if there’s water at that time of year!), and wildlife... Or maybe we don’t add anything and just extend our time in the other stops! Depending on the final choice, the order might need adjusting 🙂

Day 1: Land in Bangkok from Paris at 2 PM—either we take a direct flight to Krabi to start our trip there (and end in Bangkok on the way back), or we stay in Bangkok for 3 days. Day 1/Day 2/Day 3/Day 4 (3.5 days, 4 nights): Bangkok (temples, floating market, possibly a day trip to Ayutthaya) Day 5/Day 6/Day 7/Day 8: Travel to Krabi, Railay, and day trips to the surrounding islands Day 9/Day 10/Day 11/Day 12: Travel to an island (probably Koh Tao), snorkeling, diving, trekking, Ang Thong excursion? Day 13/Day 14/Day 15: Leave the island for an undecided destination—a national park (Khao Sok? Khao Sam Roi Yot?)? Or Phang Nga Bay? Or Erawan? Day 16: Return to Bangkok Day 17: Departure (flight at 2 PM)

What do you think? Any advice or tips on the itinerary or the ideas for Days 13-15? (Which could be moved to another part of the trip depending on the route.) Just to note, we’re not big hikers or adventurers, but we do enjoy discovery, nature, and cultural visits like temples. Thanks in advance for your valuable tips 🙂

Our flights are booked, and we’ll arrive in Thailand at the beginning of January.

Originally, we were supposed to spend 14 days there. But after booking the flights and seeing the prices, we’ll now be there for 20 days instead.

Our initial plan was: 2 days in Bangkok 1 day in Ayutthaya 4 days in Chiang Mai 6 days around Krabi

So we have 7 more days to fill. What do you recommend?

An extra day in Bangkok? Adding more days in the north? If so, where? Exploring another region, like Kanchanaburi or Cheow Lan Lake? Traveling north in stages instead of taking the overnight train?

A few extra details about us: For us, vacation isn’t about relaxation—we love walking, exploring, and packed days don’t bother us. Hiking for hours and doing active things is what makes us happy. That said, we also enjoy visiting villages and towns if they’re worth the detour. In Thailand, we’d like to visit temples too. We’re early risers, so our days tend to be long. 🙂 In short, we like to keep things moving during our trips. 😉

Unfortunately, seeing terraced rice fields isn’t possible in January. I read there are rice fields around Sukhothai. Are they green in January?

In the north, do you recommend Doi Inthanon, Huai Nam Dang, or Doi Chiang Dao National Parks? Which one is the most beautiful and best for January?

Bonjour, Confinement oblige, j'essaie d'organiser tranquillement mes vacances de l'année prochaine (et oui faut bien s'occuper!). Nous aimerions faire la Thaïlande car par un gros budget mais envie de rêver. Nous avons prévu de partir 15 jours en mars en arrivant à Bangkok, y rester 2 jours puis faire 1 île et revenir sur Bangkok encore 2 jours. Je précise que nous serons 2 adultes et 1 enfant de 5 ans. J'ai fais beaucoup de recherches et je n'arrive pas à me décider sur une île ! Nous aimerions ne pas être gêné par une musique assourdissante, des plages magnifiques mais aussi faire des visites car pas la peine de faire tout ce voyage si c'est juste pour glandouiller sur la plage... Voyageant avec un enfant l'idéal serait de pas trop galerer afin d'accéder à cette île! Je sais j'en demande beaucoup mais il doit bien y avoir une île qui regroupe la plupart de ces critères ! Du coup je voudrais bien un peu d'aide s'il vous plaît 🤗

Bonjour, je termine mon voyage en Thaïlande, et en remontant, de Krabi (aonang) a surat t hani (où j'ai mon train), je voudrais m'arrêter au lac. Mais quelle galère pour trouver un moyen de transport. A part les excursions a la journee hors de prix, on ne trouve rien !! J'ai fini par trouver à me faire déposer en route en prenant un voyage pour kao sok (mais même ca il n'y en a pas bcp qui comprennent, ils vont tous akao soi qui est bcp plus loin), je dois ensuite finir en taxi... Et pour le retour ?? Je dois être à surat tani le soir pour le train de nuit. Que conseilleriez vous ? Est ce que j'ai une chance de trouver un transport collectif une fois sur place ? Faites vous vous même ce trajet ? Merci

C'est mon premier post sur le forum, je suis entrain d'organiser mon séjour de 3 semaines dans les iles d'andaman, j'ai un doute concernant l'ordre des différentes iles que je visiterai, voilà mon itinéraire actuel:

Arrivé à l'aéroport de Pukhet Visite de Koh Sok Visite de Krabi Visite de Koh Lanta Visite de Koh Ngai Départ vers Bangkok

Est-ce ce que ça vous semble optimisé ? sachant que j'ai un gros doute sur la correspondance Koh Ngai - Bangkok (faut-il repasser par Krabi ?) ou partir à Trang pour prendre le train de nuit vers bangkok (idéalement ?)

Bonjour à tous Nous partons fin mars en Thaïlande rejoindre notre fille à Phetchabun, nous pensons passer quelques jours à Bangkok et visiter le parc Khao Yai, les informations sont très floues pour accéder à ce parc et comment se déplacer à l’intérieur, peut on y loger et cela merite t’il d’y rester plusieurs jours, ensuite peut-on rejoindre Phetchabun à partir du parc où nous faut-il retourner à Bangkok? Nous ne voulons pas louer de voiture, il y a trop de commentaires négatifs sur la conduite thaïlandaise, nous n’avons envie de gâcher notre séjour à cause d’un accident . Par contre , je trouve très peu d’infos sur les moyens de circuler dans la direction de Phetchabun et alentours. Je compte sur vous pour m’éclairer grâce à vos expériences. Amicalement , Chantal

Bonjour, je pense que mon message sera peut être identique à d'autres mais je n'arrive pas à trouver toutes mes réponses alors voilà.... Voici ce que nous aimerions faire de nos deux semaines à 2 en Thaïlande: Arrivée le 17/04 directement sur Chiang Mai, 3 nuits sur place Départ le 20/04 de Chiang Mai pour Krabi, 4 nuits sur place 24/04: je me posais la question de partir sur Koh Lanta qui n'est pas loin et facile d’accès depuis Krabi mais on me dit aussi que Koh Tao vaut le détour (nous cherchons une destination plongée). L'idée serait de perdre le moins de temps possible dans les transports mais je me dis que Krabi = Koh Lanta et que Koh tao aurait peut être un paysage/atmosphère différents...ce serait pour 4-5 nuits et 2 jours de plongée. Nous aimerions ensuite être sur Bangkok à partir du 29/04 pour 2 nuits, notre vol retour étant programmé pour le 01/05. Pourriez vous me donner vos avis tant sur le planning que sur la destination plongée? Merci merci merci!

Bonjour, J essaye de faire un itinéraire sur les îles du sud. Voici notre programme qui peut changer selon les avis de chacun. Pour info nous aurons 14 nuits fin janvier début février 2020. Les vols ne sont pas encore achetés nous attendons selon notre itinéraire. 3 nuits sur Krabi (1 journée Hong Island et 1 journée a Koh Rok et Koh Haa) 5 nuits Koh Lipe 5 nuits Koh Phi Phi Par contre dans quel sens faut il faire cet itinéraire pour avoir le moins de temps de trajet moins de perte de temps possible et par quel moyen de transport pour aller d’une île à une autre. je sais que l'issan est assez grand est je ne parle pas de la faire en 16 jours. apres avoir parcouru le forum, parcour en issan... je retiens ce circuit

Bonjour je m'interroge sur les étapes le long de la boucke de Mae Hong Son (à 2 roues motorisé). Je ne vais pas partir très tôt le 1er jour (arrivant juste la veille à Chiang Maï), aussi je me demande s'il y a des haltes sympa avant Mae Sariang (je ne compte pas rouler de nuit et je table sur une vitesse moyenne basse). Devrais-je prévoir plus de temps sur le tronçon CM - Mae Sariang ? Ma 2ème étape pourrait être Mae Hong Son (à moins qu'il soit particulièrement recommandé de s'arrêter à Khun Yuam ?) Je pense rester une journée pour MHS et ses environs. Puis le 4ème jour aller vers Soppong : peu de km mais trajet très tourmenté semble t il ? Est ce que je devrais prévoir de visiter Tam Lod ce jour-là ou bien le 5ème ? 5ème jour : ballades autour de Soppong (comment trouver un itinéraire court et sympa pour marcher ?) 6ème jour : il me faut impérativement arriver à CM ce jour-là, le trajet est il réalisable depuis Soppong ou faut-il que je me rapproche de CM le jour 5 ? J'ai déjà eu l'occasion d'aller à Paï, et pas envie d'y revenir - sauf à y faire étape si nécessaire, bien entendu.

C'est pour le mois de janvier : est il facile de trouver des hébergements sur place ou bien faudrait il réserver ? Merci d'avance de vos infos pertinentes !

En pleine planification de notre voyage en Thaïlande en janvier, nous avons quelques interrogations.

Nous avons choisi de passer quelques jours sur l'ile de Koh Lanta, qui parait plutôt centrale par rapport aux iles qui nous intéressent On souhaite évidement profiter de l'ile dans un premier temps mais nous voulions également visiter les iles Trang, notamment Koh Ngai. Or en cherchant sur internet je ne trouve pas de liaison entre les deux iles qui permettrai de faire l'aller retour en une journée... (aller le matin de Koh Lanta à 10h et retour possible à partir de Koh Ngai à 10H... le même jour !) On ne souhaite pas faire de tour organisé mais plutôt de débarquer sur l'ile et de la visiter comme bon nous semble. Aie-je chercher aux mauvaises endroits ou n'existe-t-il pas de liaison permettant de retourner sur Koh Lanta en fin d'après-midi depuis Koh Ngai par exemple ? Est-ce qu'il existe des taxi -bateaux abordables?
