Hi, Has anyone else run into problems renting a car with a French credit card at Bangkok International Airport with international rental companies (like Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz)? These international car rental companies require a "credit card" to hold the deposit when picking up the vehicle. However, in several countries, French credit cards are considered "debit" cards rather than "credit" cards (even if "credit" is printed on your Visa bank card, for example). The rental agencies can't "block" the deposit with certain bank cards (though paying for the rental itself isn’t an issue), and they’ll refuse to give you the vehicle even if the rental was already paid during booking. I’ve already had this issue in several countries (Chile, Canada) with international rental companies that refused my bank card for holding the deposit, even though "credit" is clearly printed on my Visa Premier card. Has anyone encountered this problem in Bangkok? Thanks for your help! P.S.: I have a valid international driver’s permit, and I’ve searched the forum for answers about Thailand.

We (5 adults and 1 child) want to travel from Battambang to Chanthaburi via the Ban Pakkad border crossing. I’d like to know what transport options are available (bus, taxi, songthaew). Are there any direct buses from Battambang to Pailin (I haven’t found any) or from the Thai border to Chanthaburi? If you know of any taxi companies that might cover these routes, I’d really appreciate the info.

Hello fellow travelers!!!! I want to warn as many people as possible about what happened to me in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, during my trip across Southeast Asia. I know there are already several posts on this forum about this topic, but I think one more won’t hurt—to help stop the activities of this gang of Filipinos operating across Asia. I was extorted out of $4000 after being lured into an underground Black Jack game. They invite you to their place for some innocent reason, drug you, make you play, and then rob you. To my great regret, this bad experience has happened to several people, but I realized it too late. What happened to me is as much my fault as theirs: my naivety and their dishonesty. So, be careful when you travel—don’t trust people too quickly. I hope this post helps. Cambodia remains a magnificent country for me, and most of the people are wonderful. Big up!!!!! Hi everyone! I’ve had a question nagging at me for days, and I can’t find any answers on the site! I’m heading to Java soon, and since I don’t have many days, I’ll be staying in Yogyakarta to visit the temples and, most importantly, take a 3-day/2-night organized tour to Bromo, Kawa Ijen, and its beautiful blue flames... My issue is that on all the itineraries, I see the blue flame tour ending at 9 AM but heading to Bali! However, I’d really like to return to Yogyakarta after visiting Kawa Ijen. Please tell me this is possible—it’s starting to stress me out :-(... If so, how long does it take to get from Kawa Ijen back to Yogyakarta? Thanks so much for your help!

I’m leaving for a little over 3 months starting at the end of January—Thailand (January-February), then Laos (February-March), Cambodia (March), and Vietnam (March-April).

I see that a lot of travelers don’t seem to book accommodations in advance and just go with the flow.

Given that I’ll be traveling during peak season (January to early May) and these are still very popular destinations, do you think I’ll be able to easily find places to stay on the spot without booking the day before?

We’re traveling as a family of three adults for the holidays. After several iterations, here’s the itinerary we’re considering. We’d thought about including Bac Ha or Mai Chau, but in the end, we wanted to avoid excessive travel and rushing around. That’s not our style—we’d rather see less but have time to enjoy what we visit at a relaxed pace. We’ll definitely be back (in a better season) to see some of what we’ll miss this time. Just to note: we’re not motorbike riders, and we’re not the type to start our days at dawn and keep going until nightfall. We go at the pace of the day’s mood and energy. My questions: - Thoughts on the itinerary? - Ninh Binh: where’s the best place to stay to explore mostly on foot, by bike, or by taxi? - Cat Ba to Ninh Binh route: is it better to arrange it through one of our accommodations (departure or arrival) or handle it ourselves? - For the return day between Ninh Binh and Hanoi, I’d like to visit some sights rather than make a direct trip, since we’ll already spend enough time in Ninh Binh and Hanoi. I was thinking of the Perfume Pagoda and possibly Quang Phu Cau. But we’d need a car for the day. Is it better to organize in advance or on the spot? In Hanoi or Ninh Binh? Any driver recommendations? Price ideas? Other suggestions for things to see along the way?

1: I arrive at 3 PM at Kuala Lumpur Airport and plan to take a direct bus to Malacca. Is booking a bus for 5 PM feasible, or is it too tight after collecting luggage? And which platform is the most reliable? Redbus, 12GO Asia, Rome2RIO, busonlineticket? Or can I buy a ticket on the spot without a reservation? Is that too risky? Alternatively, is it better to take a Grab? I saw the fare was around 60 €. Can you confirm this price? And is it easy to find a Grab from the airport for this distance?

2: Penang to Cameron Highlands (Tanah Rata) route—I saw there’s a direct bus that takes 5 hours. Can you confirm this? And is this duration realistic?

3: Cameron Highlands to Pangkor: This one’s tricky... The best I’ve found is 2 buses + a ferry + a taxi. Do you have a better suggestion?

Well, yes, it'll be me, the one, returning to our travel or vacation site about this destination. A site still imitated, never equaled, and by far.

A country that, when you discover it, charms you. Then comes the time for nostalgia, followed by one or more returns to the Land of Smiles. It's almost inevitable.

It's a real gut punch when you've met and grown fond of locals, only to learn about all the hardships the Covid sequence brought upon them. Broken careers, shattered hopes, disrupted lives.

Like after the tsunami, life and activity have bounced back, sometimes in different forms. Many things haven't changed much: the exchange rate, the quality of the food, the politeness and kindness of the Thai people.

As for us, we've lost members of our VF Thailand community along the way, to whom we pay our respects, but we're now happy to reconnect with both old and new faces. Sometimes in life, it's a chance to start over, forget old worries and squabbles, and be able to exchange thoughts again on one of our favorite topics.

A quick shout-out to Monsieur François Boucher, without whom, as the saying goes, none of this would have been possible. The growing success of VF over the years silences any criticism on that front. He kept his word on both the maintenance and sustainability of the site. Finally, he can be congratulated for his courageous stances during this troubled period, which, in hindsight, we must admit he got right. On a personal note, it did me good to hear voices like his speak up.

Soon, for the Thailand destination and all others, the word Covid will finally stop appearing, and long live the new era!

Are foreigners targeted or profiled when driving a rental vehicle?

The routes I’d be taking aren’t in Phuket itself—Phuket would just be the arrival point—but rather around Khao Lak, Krabi, Surat Thani, and the inland areas in that region.

Est-ce quelqu'un peut me dire pourquoi ils manque de franchise à ce point ?

J'ai fait 2 voyages, j'y ai passé plusieurs mois, j'en ai jamais rencontré un seul d'honnête, j'en viens à me demander si ils connaissent ce terme.

Souvent c'est bête. Dernier exemple en date. Je demande à une copine ou plutôt pas en tout cas je ne doit pas être son ami malgré que sa mère me dise qu'elle aime m'avoir en ami si un n° est son Zalo. C'est pas dur de me dire oui ou non ou oui mais je ne m'en sert plus (vrai ou pas) et bien non elle a lu mais pas répondu, sa mère pareil.Elles utilisent les mêmes compte, c'est compliqué de savoir à qui je parle. Elle veux pas m'ajouter sur Zalo mais en même temps elle ne veux pas me mentir donc elle ne réponds pas.

J'ai pris cette exemple car c'est le plus récent mais en gros c'est ça : ne pas répondre, ne pas être honnête pour ne pas blesser. Ça part peut-être d'un bon sentiment mais c'est flagrant qu'ils ne sont pas honnête, ça me blesse encore plus.

Bonjour à toutes et à tous Après 5 jours à Penang/Georgetown, nous nous rendrons en avion à Langkawi la dernière semaine du mois de janvier 2019. Nous aurons donc 7 jours sur place avant de reprendre le prochain vol. Sur VF, j'ai trouvé peu de choses positives sur cette île. "bétonnée, tourisme de masse, chère, les plages pas belles...".😕 J'ai lu qu'il y avait encore des endroits sympa au nord de l'île. Que nous-conseillez-vous donc? Rester 2 nuits et puis prendre le bateau pour Koh Lipe? Aller sur une autre île à partir de Langkawi et si oui laquelle? Rester sur Langkawi parce que vous connaissez un/des endroit/s sympa? Nous aimons l'eau et la plongée mais nous ne sommes pas du genre à rester une journée entière à la plage. Ce que j'ai lu du développement de Koh Lipe ne m'a pas non plus vraiment convaincue. Hasard ou vrai? Ce serait très sympa de m'épauler avec vos avis et connaissances. Connaissez-vous un ou des hôtels sympa.
