Driver or self-drive tour in Albania?

hi,

I just booked a flight and hotel (Mövenpick in Durrës) for my husband and me for late May. We’re thinking of spending (I haven’t really decided yet) one day in Tirana, one day around Berat, and one day around Gjirokastër and the Albanian Riviera. We were planning to hire a private driver for the day. I asked the hotel if they could find one for me... they brushed me off! Yet I usually do this for all my trips.

Would you have a name, a company, or someone I could contact?

Otherwise, is it "dangerous"—road conditions and Albanian driving—to rent a car?

Do I need an international driver’s permit?

thanks

Hi there, It’s really easy to rent a car and drive in Albania. For the most part, the condition of the roads is quite good. You just need to be a bit careful—people tend to stop pretty much anywhere in the middle of the road, for example (it reminds me of Corsica). Those with big Mercedes sometimes drive a bit fast and overtake anywhere. But it’s not really a dangerous country for driving... By comparison, I prefer driving in Albania over southern Italy! A French license is all you need. PS: I really enjoyed Tirana—lots to see and lively neighborhoods for cafés, restaurants, etc. I’d suggest heading north first, toward Shkodër and the Albanian Alps (Theth, Valbona). Berat is also a great option, but the Albanian Riviera, which has been overdeveloped, didn’t really impress me! (Concrete, sun loungers, and parasols everywhere!) Except for the archaeological park of Butrint.

Hi there,

No problem driving with a rental car, and no need for an international license.
