Hi, My 16-year-old son is flying to Grand Rapids with other kids his age. There’s a layover in Detroit. There’s no unaccompanied minor service available. Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well. Thanks for your replies,

Hi Céline,

I don’t recall any particular difficulties at that airport. It must be pretty standard!

Also, you didn’t ask, but just in case it’s helpful: 1) For connecting baggage in the US from an international flight—unlike in other countries where bags go straight to your final destination—in the US, you pick up your bags, go through customs, and then drop them back on the "Connecting" carousel. Of course, you should’ve already confirmed at check-in that your bags were checked through to your final destination (which is usually the case). If not, you’ll have to go to the airline counters to recheck them, and that takes time.

2) If you’re planning to bring French food, be careful—the rules are strict. See here what’s allowed OR NOT, and they’re not kidding about it.

Hi there,

To add to Caussat’s reply (hi to them, by the way!).

Like them, I don’t recall any particular issues at Detroit Airport.

But when arriving in the United States—Detroit for your son—he’ll go through all the entry formalities: - clear immigration, - collect his luggage, - go through customs with his luggage, - drop his bags on the connecting-flight belt, - head to the gate for his next flight.

No need to worry, though—just follow the crowd for all these steps.

No formalities when arriving in Grand Rapids. He’ll pick up his luggage and meet up with his group.
