Ayant un anglais desastreux, j'ai pour projet de venir apprendre l'anglais à New York pour un minimum de 6 mois.
Jusque là, rien d'extraordinaire, vous allez me dire...Là où cela se complique c'est que j'ai 30 ans (pas trop un problème, je crois) et que j'ai deux enfants agés de 4 et 6 ans.
La question qui me tracasse est comment faire pour les inscrire à l'école, tout en sachant je prefererai les mettre en ecole bilingue, que cela coute très cher soit 20 000 $, qu'il faut avancer les sous meme si on obtient une bourse, qu'il existe une ou des structures gratuites comme à harlem, mais qui demandent certains papiers comme une facture d'électricité, un bail (que je n'ai pas encore puisque je souhaite arriver en septembre 2011) tout en sachant que les inscriptions se font entre janv et avril ...
Est il raisonnable de mettre ses enfants en ecole americaine en sachant qu'aucun ne parle anglais? Vous allez me dire que les enfants s'adaptent bien ...Mais bon, je trouve le système tellement compliqué par rapport à la France (un certicat d'hebergement suffit), que je ne sais pas pour où commencer...
De plus, je dois me rendre à New York entre le 11 dec et le 7 janv, pour essayer de voir comment gerer tout cela (appartement, école pour les enfants, ecole de langues pour moi)
Que feriez vous à ma place...

Deja, six mois a un an pour parler anglais, ca me parait court, surtout si le tien est "desastreux", secondo, pourquoi aller aux Etats Unis ? Ils parlent americain, pas anglais !
Terzio, il serait bien plus simple ne crois tu pas de venir au Royaume Uni, qui est quand meme la patrie originelle de l'anglais et qui a l'avantage en plus de faire partie du marche commun.

Pour te repondre: 6 mois à 1 an, je trouve cela déjà très bien, que pourrais tu dire à tous ceux qui partent pour une année académique en sejour linguistique? Que ce n'est pas assez ? Ca ne sera jamais assez, il faut pouvoir rester des années pour vraiment s'impregner.
Mon but est de pouvoir m'exprimer correctement en Anglais (ou americain si tu préfères) car dans mon domaine d'activité (médias), c'est indispensable.
Il est vrai que l'angleterre est plus proche, accessible mais vois tu quand on a des reves, je crois qu'il faut les réaliser ou essayer...C'est ce que je fais ou essaie de faire.

Il me semble qu'avec un statut étudiant, on ne peut inscrire son enfant dans une école publique...l'école publique est réservée aux résidents américains, donc faudra payer les frais de scolarité qui seront assez élevés. En plus des assurances pour une famille de 3...
Je ne connais pas votre budget pour votre projet, mais j'espère que vous réalisez qu'il s'agit d'un montant important pour ce 6 mois...

Il faut etre resident mais pas forcement americain et c'est bien la le problème car comment font ceux qui en cours d'année doivent inscrire leurs enfants en ecole publique ou privée ou ont prévu de s'y installer mais ne sont pas encore installé ? Il y a forcement un moyen et je dois le découvrir...

Non, pas américain mais bien résidents...avec green card ou visa de travail ou d'études des parents.

Après un an, mon voeu s'est enfin réalisé! meme avec deux enfants. Pour toutes les mauvaises langues qui disent que c'est impossible, je leur dirai qu'il suffit d'y croire!!!

Concernant les papiers, dommage que je n'aie pas encore été là quand vous avez posté votre 1er message, ça vous aurait évité des soucis. En dehors de l'Alabama qui demande des papiers, tout enfant résidant sur le territoire peut être inscrit à l'école publique (y compris enfant sans papier de parents sans papiers ne parlant pas anglais - les notices sont dans toutes sortes de langues, espagnol, créole, somali...). Vos enfants sont je suppose sur votre visa en tant que "dépendants", cela se fait très souvent. Et pour les enfants, rien de plus enrichissant que d'être inscrit à l'école publique, il y a des cours d'ESL dans toutes les écoles ou presque et ils apprennent beaucoup plus vite que les adultes. Si l'école n'est pas trop grande (il y a des écoles primaires de 800 à 1000 élèves à NYC) et sûre, c'est le mieux pour eux et le plus simple pour vous.

Our departure time is getting closer (we have less than 2 years left—it’s both a long time and so short!). To start preparing seriously, we’ll need quite a bit of info. If anyone knows the rates charged by movers for a crate to French Polynesia, or what pitfalls to avoid (I know you can get quotes directly from movers, but I’d love insights from actual customers😉).

Actually, I’m currently doing a postgraduate diploma in pediatric respiratory physiotherapy and want to specialize in that area.
