Hi there, I’m traveling to Denmark this July with my three boys, aged 12, 14, and 17. I’d like to plan a little cycling trip and I’m thinking of doing the Copenhagen–Malmö route via Helsingborg. The idea is to take our time and stop along the way based on points of interest or for a swim if the weather allows. I have a few questions: - How many days should we plan for? 2, 3, or 4? - What are the recommended stopover towns? - What are the points of interest along the way? - Do we need to take a ferry for the Helsingør–Helsingborg stretch? Should we book in advance? If anyone has great tips for accommodation along the route, I’d love to hear them! Thanks! !

Hi there, From what I remember, you don’t need to book the Helsingør–Helsingborg ferry in advance. Generally, when cycling in the Nordic countries, you can skip past all the cars, position yourself at the front, and board first to secure your bike along the side of the boat. Patrick

Hi there, No problem taking the ferry or the train. The Danish stretch from Copenhagen to Elsinore really isn’t great... It’s better to head west (Odense). I also much preferred the Swedish coast between Helsingborg and Gothenburg (did it in the opposite direction). I haven’t done Helsingborg to Malmö. I did this route in 2 days in 2023, visiting the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and Kronborg Castle, and spent the night near a shelter in Rydebäck. No need to book the ferry. There are plenty, and at least 2 companies. In Malmö, your kids should love the Disgusting Food Museum (museum of the world’s worst culinary specialties) and Malmö Museum, plus the nearby Museum of Technology. Kronborg Castle (Elsinore) in Helsingborg is definitely worth it, especially with kids. They can try on costumes, play because there are fun activities in many of the castle’s rooms, but most of all explore the slightly dark underground passages—that’s what it’s really known for. We visited several castles during our trip. Helsingør’s is by far the most fun!

Right next to the castle, there’s the fabulous Maritime Museum in a very sleek architectural setting!

Nearby, by the harbor, you’ll see the statue of the Little Mermaid’s brother, and just a short walk away, the old town streets are worth exploring.

So plan plenty of time (at least a full day) to visit this city—it’s a must!

We also visited Louisiana, the modern art museum. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it with kids—they’ll get bored. Otherwise, north of Copenhagen, there’s also Bakken, the world’s oldest amusement park! !
