Hi Jean-Marie! 🙂

Yeah, sorry—I was wandering at the other end of the world and I’m now in Guadeloupe. I promise I’ll continue my story in September. 😇

Thanks Pierre! We’re leaving on August 20th for a 6-week loop in South Africa, and we’d love to hear your account and impressions of the Richterweld we’ll be hiking in early September after the KTP... But hey, we’ll have our own story to tell when we get back...

Bush story...

Evening game drive, we spot along a watercourse...

A large group of waterbucks is resting.

Weird, they're all looking in the same direction!

And then, eagle eye...

Cheetahs stand up and appear in the tall grass.

The group of waterbucks bands together, moves forward snorting and hissing...

The cheetahs growl but back off... annoyed... humiliated.

Truly chased out of the bush.

And disappear back into the thickets.

Bush story

Not long after our cheetah encounter...

A huge red Hummer parked in the middle of the path...

Well, don’t be scared, buddy, just move forward slowly...

Eagle-eyed little one

On the left, Mrs. Hyena

Hyena or not

Sleepyhead

And the next morning, at dawn...

You’d think you were in... Austria on a cold morning?

MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
A pretty good little morning despite everything...

I even almost hit an elephant.... they’re not exactly discreet when they want to be!

Amazing cheetahs! 😮 Such a magnificent sight...

It feels weird seeing Kruger in the fog. 😊

Thanks Pierre! We’re leaving on August 20th for a 6-week loop in SA, and we’d love to hear your story and impressions about the Richtersveld we’ll be exploring in early September after KTP... But hey, we’ll have our own tales to tell when we get back...

Hey Jean Marie, I messaged you privately!

Car and international driving permit.

Sure, for South Africa in the vast majority of cases, a regular car is more than enough.

But... You'll spend a lot of time in that car. The road kills more than all the lions at a conference combined. And sometimes, just for a few meters...a higher ground clearance or even 4-wheel drive makes a big difference.

For example, Tembe—without a 4x4, no hide on the program. In Kruger...being able to drive to the very end of the loop...sometimes just the nose of the vehicle...gives you a much prettier spot.

So, if you can...think about it. It’s not necessarily the smartest place to cut costs.

Where’s Waldo?

International driving permit

In theory, you need it...

I requested mine—it arrived after I got back.

The rental company? Couldn’t care less about it.

A police check (in Swazi territory this year)...same story.

So no stress.

A police check (in Swazi country this year)... same thing.

In Lesotho, they asked us for it. Since we had it, I don’t know what would’ve happened if we hadn’t (but they already wanted to give us a ticket because we’d restarted after the stop before they signaled us to go... 😕). Muriel

Is South Africa a dangerous country?

Sure, you shouldn’t do just anything anywhere and you need to stay alert.

The road kills—that’s a fact.

Animals can be dangerous... well, you’d have to be pretty reckless or just unlucky...

But there’s one danger that’s really underestimated...

You didn’t stage a car accident too, did you? 😉

We’ve been hanging out in this leopard zone for a while now... some bushy scrub, a bit of water nearby... just chilling...

Whoosh...

Leopard

Let’s be honest, it was the South African in front of us who spotted it first. He’ll tell us later... Heart racing and over 1,000 photos later...

We’ll follow it for a good while
