Hi everyone, Okay, here I go—I haven’t done a cruise review in ages, and even longer since I’ve posted one on this forum. So, this is kinda your fault, Catherine, if I’m getting back into it... I just hope I haven’t lost my touch!

It’s a transatlantic cruise, so there are a lot of sea days. That means this review will mostly focus on the ship, especially the "Haven" section, which doesn’t get much coverage on this forum. There’ll definitely be some comparisons with MSC’s Yacht Club, since they’re direct competitors.

This will be my third cruise with NCL—a company I really love—but my first in The Haven.

My two previous cruises were on smaller ships: the NCL Sun for the Chilean fjords and the NCL Spirit in February 2025 in Asia, departing from Taiwan and arriving in Korea. I *loved* the Spirit.

Alright, let’s get started!

This trip was booked almost last-minute in early October for late November, after I had to cut short my August trip for medical reasons.

At first, when I looked at this cruise, I hadn’t specifically decided to go for The Haven. I wanted a relaxing cruise but still with destinations I hadn’t been to before. I kinda stumbled upon this one, and the itinerary appealed to me. I also found the balcony cabin price pretty good—around 2800 € for a balcony cabin (for two), all-inclusive package included. Not including flights, of course. In the end, we decided to try The Haven (obviously not the same price), but I think we got a great deal for the promised perks.

Itinerary: Departure from Lisbon, arrival in Galveston, Texas. Stops: St. Martin, St. Thomas, La Romana, Cabo Rojo, Falmouth in Jamaica.

Hi there... I’m wondering how to book a cruise on the Celebrity Ascent. On the American site, everything is detailed—you can choose your cabin... After checking with a travel agency, they’re offering me a "guaranteed" cabin!!😮 And I have to pay the "service fees" right away. The itinerary was tempting, and we decided to take this cruise with friends. It also gave us a chance to discover this company, which offers many river cruises in a French-speaking atmosphere. The boat is only rated 3 stars, so we knew we wouldn’t have the same comfort or services as usual, but we accepted that. After all, the price is half that of a cruise with Ponant in the same area.

From the booking stage, this company was unlike any other. We later learned that Rivages du Monde isn’t a shipowner but just a service provider.

It operates in a somewhat outdated, old-fashioned, or even backward way, depending on how you see it. Information about the cruise, excursions, and the boat comes in the form of a very brief PDF. Documents, quotes, and invoices are sent by mail.

There’s no personal account on the company’s website, no passenger form to fill out, and no online check-in.

Fifteen days before the balance was due, I received the invoice with its share of surprises. I had to send my credit card details by mail (well, why not?), or pay by check.

The bad surprise was a fuel surcharge. The good one was that we were upgraded from category 3 to category 7, moving from deck 6 to deck 4. Since the information was so lacking, I had no idea what the benefits of this upgrade would be. I almost complained and asked to keep the cabin I had chosen, but I read in some comments that cabins on deck 6 were to be avoided due to loud creaking. So I said nothing.

Booking excursions, which had to be paid at the same time as the balance, was strongly recommended before departure. They were reserved by filling out an A4 sheet after reading a 3- or 4-line description in the PDF. The duration of the excursion and the departure time weren’t indicated. No information about disembarkation—would it be at the dock or by tender?

The boat. The MS Astoria is the oldest passenger ship in the world. Built in 1948, it started its career as a transatlantic liner until 1960. Often restored, it has retained an old-fashioned, vintage charm... or so the ads say. In the end, it didn’t look that old, as it had been modified and refurbished so much. Only its original bell remains in a display case. Its vintage look is more visible on the outside than inside. The outdoor decks are spacious, great for sightseeing. There weren’t too many passengers for the size of the ship. Inside, it’s not very modern or beautiful, but it was decent. A pleasant surprise—it handled the sea better than we expected.

The cabin was outdated and small, as we expected—no desk, no sofa, and two portholes that made it very bright. Well-equipped with new storage furniture, it even had a fridge. The bathroom would have been spacious if it didn’t have a bidet. The bed had a board instead of a proper base, but the mattress was good, and we slept well the whole cruise. Don’t look too closely at the finishing details, but overall, it was better than I expected. On deck 4, the cabin creaked a little at night, but it didn’t bother us. The cabins are different sizes on the plan, but in reality, they all have the same surface area.

The buffet was tiny, with few choices and very basic, ordinary dishes. A few mixed industrial salads, some fresh salad and cold cuts. For the main course, chicken, pork, some kind of minced meat, or fish. Then potatoes, rice, pasta, or steamed vegetables (always the same ones). For dessert, flavorless pastries in various colors or fresh melon and watermelon salad. That was the sad, single menu for the entire cruise at the buffet. Note that the buffet was only open for 2 hours at lunchtime and 1 hour in the afternoon for a snack.

Tea, coffee, and water were available all day.

The restaurant. The table was nicely set and pretty, but the meals weren’t much better than at the buffet. The “beef fillet in pastry” was like boiled beef stew—it fell apart easily (even though we asked for it rare or at least medium-rare). The “asparagus velouté” was actually leek soup with “hay” that crunched under your teeth. The poire belle Hélène or profiteroles were sad, distant relatives of the well-known desserts—very skimpy. And those were just a few examples.

Drinks were included with meals: still or sparkling bottled water, white, red, or rosé wine, coffee, tea, or herbal tea.

The bar. The servers were nice but far from having the class and know-how you find on other cruise lines. We wanted to try the cocktails, but only once. The margarita was warm, with bottled chemical lemon, no ice, and no salt. The caipirinha was brown! And later, we noticed that in the Singapore Sling, they replaced the Champagne with soda!!! What a skill set!!!

The lectures were very popular. Almost all passengers eagerly attended the talks by the two naturalists.

The musical entertainment was French variety—good-natured and friendly most of the time. A little classical music, chamber music so sad it made you sleepy. Nothing like the pianos and violins you find elsewhere... (Princess or HAL).

The shows. With very limited resources, the dancers did their best. The outfits were very revealing in certain strategic areas, and that was the rule for all themes.

The “red vests.” The atmosphere on board was more like a company outing than a cruise. There was a lot of staff to run the excursions desk, assist and supervise passengers during stops, or act as guides during excursions. These “red vests” behaved like they were on a summer camp—they had a great time and gathered as often as possible to laugh and have fun. They didn’t hesitate to roll their eyes behind passengers’ backs. But the “group leaders” became very authoritarian and directive when addressing passengers.

One evening, our friend asked a “red vest” about the excursion time the next day. That was top-secret information, impossible to get (I’ll come back to that). The “red vest” replied that they wouldn’t tell him because, by the next day, he would have forgotten anyway. That shows the level of respect this staff had for the passengers.

Also worth noting: among the passengers was a man in a wheelchair. For the entire cruise, he couldn’t go ashore. No one ever offered to help his wife get him off the ship.

My perception of this cruise is inevitably shaped by my past experiences. Some passengers shared my opinion, but others were completely satisfied with everything and found the food good. They also swallowed all the bad excuses, cooked up with a security sauce, without question—reassured and delighted that “everything” was done for “their safety,” which is the most important thing, isn’t it?

Hi everyone, I was supposed to go to Greenland in 2020, but—Covid! Then, health issues. This time *has* to be the one. I’m going on a small cruise on the *World Explorer*. So, depending on my physical abilities, I’d love to visit the Icefjord from Ilulissat. Do any of you know if there’s a way to get there by vehicle, off the main paths? If not, what particular challenges might there be on foot? I think it takes about 45 minutes? Thanks for your help, have a great day!

On August 10 in Havre St. Pierre, I booked the boat "Capitaine Richard" from 9:15 AM to 5:00 PM with a capacity of 10 passengers. We are two and are offering the remaining spots. The price to pay on-site is CAD 120 per person if there are 8 or 10 passengers, and CAD 140 if there are 6 passengers. Drinks and lunch are not included. Capitaine Richard is a very friendly character and has a lot to show us. I think it’ll be a great excursion. I’m offering this first to French-speaking cruisers, but if there aren’t enough, I’ll post on an American site. Please contact me quickly—I have a feeling the other available boat was chartered by Azamara and already seems full...

Total of 16 days on the ship with the advantage of one day at sea and one day in port, so time to rest in between. NORWEGIAN JOY: 1-Food not as good as on Costa and MSC (fewer dish choices or repetitive meals, no region-specific meals, meats are good but desserts are really not good at all, no real exotic fruits despite the regions you visit, and even the other fruits like melon and pineapple aren’t ripe). No need to dress up for evening meals: freestyle, so don’t bring too many evening outfits. 2-No fixed time or place for meals: queues every time in the restaurants, tables assigned based on your group size, so it’s hard to interact with other passengers. 3-Passengers mostly American: shows cater to their taste, fewer musical-style performances in the theater compared to Costa and MSC. 4-Excursions are very expensive and always in English. Americans still leave huge tips for the guides. ITINERARY: 1-Miami departure port (airport: 3-hour queue for passport control!) 2-2 days at sea, then Cartagena in Colombia: definitely don’t take the Pirates excursion (it’s terrible, even for kids—they make you run all over the city for their lame "show"!). You can even stay at the port where there’s a beautiful park called "Oasis" with lovely birds... and a café. Otherwise, while visiting the city, buy t-shirts ($10 USD—the best quality and markets of all the regions visited) or taste ripe exotic fruits you’ll never find on the ship ($3). 3-Colon/Panama: several interesting excursions to the locks (old and new). They use highways, so you don’t see much of the country. Crossing from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the canal and the lake: not much view of cities during the passage, just a few islands and greenery on the lake. 4-Puntarenas/Costa Rica: We took the coffee plantation tour, which lets you drive through villages and see more of the country. 5-Guatemala: Highly recommended excursion to Antigua: a very pretty old town with a human scale, lots of women trying to sell you all sorts of things but always with a smile and full of color. Enjoy bargaining—it’s a real connection with the locals. 6-Acapulco/Mexico: a big city that reminds you a bit of Rio/Brazil. Beaches right near the port if you want to swim, as well as little shops selling everything. The famous cliff divers: it’s crowded, so it’s hard to find a good spot to really see them jump. Lots of police and heavily armed military, so probably best not to take risks venturing alone into the poorer neighborhoods like favelas in the hills. 7-Vallarta/Mexico: a gem, a small and very pleasant seaside resort with a lovely promenade, lots of colors, statues, souvenirs, and cafés.... 8-Cabo San Lucas/Mexico: The ship stays at sea; you go ashore by small boats from the port. Lots of shops, restaurants, etc., right at the port if you don’t want to take an excursion. It’s quite chilly early in the morning on these small boats, so bring a jacket. 9-Los Angeles: disembarkation—another 3-hour queue for passport control. If you have a flight right after, be careful: either ask for disabled assistance on the ship (they have a fast exit) or hire paid porters who also get you out quickly.

We’ve booked the transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary. I understand that for the gala evenings, we need to wear a tuxedo and an evening gown. Do we need a very expensive chic evening gown, or can a more modest one still be tasteful? And where can I buy one? I have the same question about the tuxedo. Thanks!

Hi there, I just applied for an ESTA since I’m leaving in February on MSC, and my request was approved. I just noticed I put “transit” (we arrive from France the day before and spend one night at the hotel before boarding) instead of “stay.” Does this matter, and I don’t know how to change it? Is there a way to visit New York from the MSC cruise terminal?

Bonsoir N'ayant vu aucune discussion ouverte concernant cette croisière , je souhaiterais savoir si d'autres personnes ont réservé cette transat ? Nous l'avons retenu en décembre 2019 auprès d'Azur Croisières (!) et nous devons régler le solde le 3 juillet ce qui nous pose problème : en effet, nous ne voyons pas comment elle peut être maintenue , étant donné la fermeture des ports canadiens jusqu'au 30 octobre et la situation sanitaire à New-York . Je suis naturellement au courant de la fameuse ordonnance du 26 mars , mais , si elle est annulée ce qui me semble plus que probable , nous ne voulons pas de l'avoir , car cette croisière est unique et c'est celle-ci que nous voulons et elle n'est pas reprogrammée en 2021 . D'où ma 2ème question : Azur doit -il alors nous rembourser car rien de semblable ou d'équivalent ne peut-être proposé ? Merci d'avance pour vos réponses Christian

Bonjour je devais faire une croisière avec le Meraviglia de MSC le 8 mars 2020 j ai du annuler le 5 mars car ayant vu les situations sur ce navire bagarres pas de dialogues avec le commandant média net et télé ayant des problèmes cardiaques je ne voulais pas partir car je fais beaucoup de stress l annulation a été faite ms répondu de croisierenet que Msc ne voulait pas nous donner un avoir alors que l ordonance du decret 2020-315 dit que l annulation du voyageur ou du professionel est compatible a cet avoir du montant payer et valable 18 mois a compter du 1 mars 2020 au 15 sept 2020 y a til des passagers de le même ca que nous ou des passagers qui ont fait malgré tout la croisiere car nous savons que aucun pays ne les a reçu a part ocean cay que l l'ile appartient à MSC svp puis je avoir des réponses Merci

Qui avait prévu de faire cette croisière, j'ai posé plusieurs questions à MSC du au changement de port de Miami à Cap Canaveral

Sachant qu'il n'y a pas grand chose à faire et pas envie d'aller à Disney à Orlando.

Dans mon pack proposez par MSC avion + hôtel à Miami, pour le moment il manque une nuit, celle du 27 au 28 mars, dans mon compte il est toujours inscrit mes nuits d'hôtel jusqu'au 27 mars...

J'aimerai éviter les 3 heures de bus entre Miami et le Cap Canaveral, je demande à MSC s'il propose autre solution

On regrette la disparition de l'escale Océan Cay, on est en mode annulation car on trouve trop dommage d'aller jusque là-bas et de ne pas pouvoir en profiter.

SI vous avez des retour de MSC, il serait intéressant de les partager.

J'avais programmé une croisière vers le Groenland avec Hurtigruten. Si on suit leur site, petit à petit, des croisières Norvégiennes type express côtier ont été annulées - pas toutes - et hier celle du Groenland du 22 août a subi le même sort. De Paris, je devais rejoindre Rekjavik en avion et de là, le bateau.

J'ignore le motif précis de cette annulation, entrée interdite en Islande ?, au Groenland , autre ?

J'avais fait des recherches sur les limitations au Groenland mais n'avais rien trouvé.

J'ai la possibilité d'un report sur 2021 ( que j'ai accepté ) , j'espère bien que cette fois.....

Bonjour, Suite à une erreur de ma part🙄 nous allons arriver à 14h à Miami pour une croisière qui part le lendemain à 19h. Je voudrai visiter la ville mais surtout aller voir le parc des Everglades et ses crocodiles. Nous aurons 1 semaine plus tard une escale de 7h à 16h à Miami. Est-ce que dans le port on trouve des sociétés pour des excursions à la journée? J’hésite à louer une voiture pour y aller (nous serons 3). Autre question, pour se ballader le 1er soir, et découvrir un peu, il vaut mieux loger dans quel coin? J’ai l’habitude d’organiser mes excursions moi-même mais je ne maîtrise pas trop le facteur temps d’une grande ville comme ça. Merci

On en parle peu, mais, d'après LCI, il y aurait actuellement 104 bateaux au large des Etats Unis, en attente de pouvoir bouger, ce qui représente 72 000 membres d'équipage qui non seulement s'angoissent, font des dépressions, mais ont aussi pour certains entamé une gréve de la faim. De plus quelques morts pouvant être secondaires à des suicides se seraient produites.

Merci de confirmer ces infos....c'est le côté sombre des croisières et la pression doit être forte pour que le silence règne !

Je commence à magasiner une croisière en Alaska à l'été 2019. Je me demande s'il est préférable de partir du port d'Anchorage ou de Vancouver. La croisière qui m'intéresse est sur le Royal Princess partant d'Anchorage le 1er juin et les autres croisières sur ce navire au départ de Vancouver arrivent à Anchorage à 00h30, il faut donc quitter le navire très tard le soir.

Je n'ai pas vérifié sur d'autres navires mais avant je veux avoir l'opinion des gens d'expérience à savoir quel port de croisière choisir pour le départ?

Bonjour, J’ai besoin de vos conseils. Je suis complètement perdue. Nous avons réservé une croisière msc le 1 août au départ de Miami, une suite yacht club famille (nous avons trois enfants et, à 5 c’est compliqué de trouver des cabines. On a réservé via croisierenet. On a payé 10000 euros (somme déjà énorme pour une croisière, surtout par rapport à ce qu’on payait avant). Pour le moment, hélâs MSC n’a pas encore annulé pour le mois d’août. On a demandé un report pour là prochain. La nana de croisienet a la gentillesse de nous proposer pour seulement 300 euros de plus ... deux cabines avec balcon!!! En perdant bien entendu tous les avantages du yacht club. Cette année deux cabines avec balcon coûtaient 7000 euros. Hors de question. Elle nous prend pour des chèvres!!! Que nous conseillez vous? Soit on attend en espérant que msc annule ses croisières pour août, soit on attend 18 ans pour récupérer les sommes engagées (enfin, 10000 euros ce n’est pas rien!). Nous devons payer le solde le 1 juin. Je vous remercie.

Sauf erreur de ma part, je ne vois plus de croisière en 2021 au départ de Miami et de Fort Lauderdale sur leur site. Est ce une conséquence de la transatlantique retour du Luminosa ( qui semble-t-il a donné lieu à une plainte aux US) ou simplement une programmation en attente?

Impression sur le bateau, l’ambiance, les sorties et retours sur le bateau, intérêts des excursions, etc .... nous avons fait notre choix par rapport au périple avant tout. Il y a quelques années , j'ai assez assidument fréquenté VF, principalement pour des parcours en autonomie dans l'Ouest américain .

Il se trouve qu'un récent circuit guidé en Patagonie nous a donné l' opportunité de faire au départ d' Ushuaia une croisière "Australis" de 4 jours et 4 nuits dans l' "avenue des glaciers" entre le Cap Horn et Punta Arenas , qui nous a vraiment conquis .

Pour 2020 , l'idée pourrait être sur une distance plus importante , de faire un parcours le long des côtes de l'Alaska , en espérant y retrouver des paysages équivalents , et même parfois + grandioses encore en termes de reliefs , ou de glaciers débouchant sur la mer ou les fjords . J'ai déjà pu constater que les compagnies , le + souvent américaines , qui desservent cette (vaste) zone utilisent essentiellement des navires de très grande taille , qui relâchent dans quelques ports équipés pour les recevoir . Et qui semblent donner satisfaction à nombre d' utilisateurs . Pourtant , nous avons beaucoup apprécié et gardé la nostalgie d'un navire de taille réduite (100 cabines , toutes extérieures) qui assurait quotidiennement 2 débarquements quotidiens en zodiacs sur des sites naturels en grande partie préservés , avec une guide spécialisée . De ce que j'ai vu jusqu'alors sur la toile , la compagnie Hurtigruten serait celle dont les caractéristiques des navires se rapprocheraient le plus , mais tout de même en + grand , de cet "idéal" . J'ai noté en particulier entre Anchorage et Vancouver , un parcours de 2 semaines (dont le "Roald Amundsen") , et dont certains trajets bénéficient d'un accompagnateur francophone venant en complément de l' équipes scientifique anglophone du bord . Je souhaiterais avoir des avis de voyageurs qui ont vécu cette expérience , ou d'autres plus ou moins équivalentes , et connaitre leurs impressions .

Accessoirement , je m'interroge aussi pour savoir s'il n'y a pas plus d'inconvénient à effectuer la croisière de N vers le S (dans une conversation cela semblait etre l'avis du membre VF Etrefal ) , plutot que l'inverse , à cause du soleil dans la figure (?)

Le gouvernement Américain vient d'adopter un plan de soutien à l'économie de 3000 milliards de dollars. Ce plan ne profitera pas aux compagnies de croisière, qui, bien que considérées comme Américaines (Carnival, RCL, Norwegian), ont basé leurs sièges dans des paradis fiscaux. On estime à 420 000 le nombre d'emplois sur le territoire américain créés par l'industrie des croisières et gravement menacés actuellement. Saisi de la question, D.Trump a simplement répondu qu'il voulait que ces compagnies aient leur siège aux USA et paient leurs impôts aux USA. Cela ne va pas arranger RCL, Norwegian et Carnival, dont les cours de bourse ont perdu plus de 70% depuis le début de la crise.

Pour ocho rios: Turtle river falls

Pour les autres escales nous sommes preneur de toutes idées ou bons plans.

Salut a tous Vendredi dernier le ministre des Transports canadien a annoncé que les navires de croisière de plus de 500 personnes ne pourront désormais plus faire escale au Canada, et ce, jusqu’au 1er juillet. Donc un pbl énorme pour les Cies qui sont sur le marché "Alaska" à cette période de l'année, et ça concernerait plusieurs 10aines de navires et qui n'ont pas bcp de solution de rechange Sur sont site HAL est clair il ne sait pas dire ce qu'il va être fait et demande mm de ne pas contacter la Cie pour le moment ! A suivre mais mon départ de Vancouver le 20 mai avec HAL est plus que compromis ( de toute façon avec la décision Trump c'était déjà "mal barré" )

Question annexe une croisière en Alaska en septembre c'est la fin de la saison il y a encore quelques départs reste intéressante ou le climat automnale va jouer les troubles fête
