Hi Brigitte,

Your photos are amazing. We take tons of them in every country we visit, but we rarely dare to photograph people, even when we interact with them😕

For a long time, I couldn’t bring myself to ask people I met if they’d let me photograph them because it’s just (unfortunately) not in my nature. But over the past few years, not only have I managed to do it, but I’ve also come to love it! Before asking, I always flash the biggest smile possible 😏, and it’s really rare for people to say no. Even if they do, I keep chatting with them. When they agree, I always show them the pictures on my camera screen, and I have to say, it’s always a special moment—especially in the most remote places. No matter the country, age, etc., the "models" always love that moment, and so do I.

We were lucky enough, a few days before leaving Santiago, to witness the arrival of the rain, which had been awaited for a year. It was a celebration for everyone—a truly beautiful moment.

I dreamed of experiencing that moment with them, but it never happened. Just a few tiny, scattered raindrops—nowhere near enough—that’s all we got. Several people had told us that when the rain finally came, it was a party: people would go out into the streets, sing, dance... Yes, I can imagine how incredible your experience of that moment must have been.

Even though I spent a few days in the hospital in the infectious and tropical diseases ward after returning from this trip (caught two viruses there), it still makes me want to go back.

We settled for a good old bout of traveler’s diarrhea at the end of the trip! Ahhh, the joys of travel...

Quick note on the price for Level 1 diving with AAA Maio Plongée

The price we paid for Level 1 is exactly what I mentioned in the practical info of the travel journal.

However, our sons weren’t beginners—they each had around ten introductory dives, logged in their dive books—so Bernard and Catherine let them complete their Level 1 with 5 dives instead of the usual 6. That’s why we paid a bit less than the standard rate (we paid 350 euros instead of the usual 430).

For a Level 1 there, you’ll normally need 6 dives for 430 €.

What a travel journal! What photos!! Wow

I traveled with you—thank you so much!

I still don’t know where we’ll go in 2019, but I can definitely see myself wandering around Maio...

The only downside: we’ll probably be traveling with our 5-year-old son, and I’m not sure Cape Verde and its islands are the best fit for such a young child, especially since hikes will be pretty much impossible for him... Anyway, thanks for this beautiful journal!

Hi Faustine, Just wanted to say there are loads of people traveling with young kids (even younger than 5) in Cape Verde... and on Santo Antão there are also some lovely relaxed walks through beautiful valleys, even with a 5-year-old! Have a great day, Marie

Hi Faustine,

What a travel journal! What amazing photos!! Wow

Thanks 😊—I always love getting feedback... especially like this!!

we’re definitely traveling with our 5-year-old son and not sure if Cape Town and its islands are suitable for such a young child

I completely agree with Ptitortue: Cape Verde, especially Maio, is very doable with a 5-year-old. At least, his age shouldn’t hold you back.

Thanks again and safe travels...

Cool story. I did Pico de Fogo, hiking down through the volcanic ash—so much dust! And the red wine was excellent, with vines growing right in that volcanic soil! Showered using a couple of bottles of water that had heated up in the sun. The lodge was run by a French guy who picked us up in his 4x4. Tarrafal and its little fishing port were gorgeous!
