After the discouraging queue for the Hagia Sophia, we find the Blue Mosque under renovation! The visit is brief, with false ceilings hiding the dome.

Nel momento in cui ho visto il tuo sguardo, sapevo che stavo per soccombere.

We try the Basilica Cistern. It’s a gigantic underground cistern, a strange monument I’ve been eager to visit. A major rehabilitation project was undertaken in 1985... I should’ve seen this: (photo copied from toutistanbul.com)

But all I saw was this:

And I also saw this—a Punch and Judy-style theater where you get photographed, made up, and dressed up. The "official" photographer yelled at me when he saw my camera. I could’ve told him that charging 20 TL for entry when the cistern isn’t even filled with water is a bit much! But then, he’d lose his job.

A day without cats isn’t a normal day...

We drag our disappointment through the neighborhood—turns out it’s actually pretty nice—and go drown our sorrows in a glass of apple tea (an excellent local specialty ;))

We're taking the metro to reach the Edirne Kapı (Gate of Adrianople) neighborhood and visit the Kariye Camii church. And guess what? The church is under renovation! I'll make do with little... Amen.

Heading back to Galata, passing through the Draman neighborhood where there’s a lovely night market sometimes haunted by ghosts...

Hello fellow world explorer 🙂

As usual, a travel journal that grabs your attention, but...

sometimes haunted by ghosts

I’d rather stick with my Siamese ghosts trouble among the ghosts

A Punch and Judy show where you get photographed, made up, and dressed up

They’re stunning, with shy smiles just waiting to bloom

The "official" photographer yelled at me

A real Turkish scapegoat, in a way

Hello Muriel!

I’m not really drawn to Istanbul (but I am to cats, yes)

So with Masterpo, that makes two of you 😉 Carpool and motivate each other! 😛

Many cats find their balance through contact with humans—us, their surrogate parents. But they’re territorial first and foremost, so in Istanbul, they have to put up with their fellow felines. That’s easier when food is plentiful. They tolerate each other and make compromises, though sometimes, depending on the season, things can get tense...

Their mating behavior usually happens at night. But that day, the female in question must’ve been quite the catch! The "session" lasted at least 10 minutes.

Hi Kate, Istanbul’s been on my top list for quite a while now, so I’ll definitely be following this travel journal with great interest . Well, I’ll avoid telling my husband there are so many cats because they’re really not his favorite animal 😉. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Isabelle,

You should tell your husband there are lots of dogs too! 😉 But unlike cats, they live in packs, so you often come across groups of 5 or 6 big, fluffy mutts lounging on the sidewalks, waiting for the municipal kibble truck. They all look alike—kind of like labrador-wolf mixes. They’re tagged on the ear, vaccinated, and neutered. Sometimes they buddy up with the cats and are just as loved by Istanbul locals as the felines are 🙂

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for this "Istanbul" travel journal. I’m discovering it. As I read through, I get the impression you’re taking more risks than before—those reportage-style portraits, sometimes even quite direct. That’s not always easy, no matter the country. Am I wrong?

For your distortion issues, you might want to check out DXO. Their software can handle development for not just the camera bodies it recognizes (thanks to a very extensive and regularly updated database), but also specific camera/lens combinations. I don’t know the brand of your gear, but I don’t think DXO would have a problem with it. You could try the free 1-month version first and run some tests. Of course, you’ll need to start with native files.

Hi Jpar 😉

I’ve been taking photography a bit more seriously for the past couple of years. A DSLR replaced my compact camera, and naturally, I’ve “specialized” in street photography. I enjoy practicing it regularly, so that’s all I do when traveling now, and I’ve become more confident about approaching people, chatting for a few minutes, or asking for verbal permission. Here and there, some shots are “stolen,” but rarely, and the subjects are never in a degrading situation. I’ll leave it to the greats to talk about poverty (yesterday I saw an exhibit by Reza—I had to hold back tears).

Unfortunately, portraits can’t be rushed, and I’m often disappointed with the results. The attitude and expressions of my subjects work for me, but technically... 🤪 Portrait photographers spend hours with a subject. Me, I’m on the move, and when I get back, I end up deleting dozens of shots that are often blurry.

Lens distortion haunts me—thanks for the tip! I have a D3300 with an 18-105mm lens.

Thanks for stopping by, M 😉 I’ll pick up on your message after a few days’ break...

My mom told me: "When you were little, you’d always lock yourself in your room when we got back from vacation. Impossible to get you out!" Even now, I still feel the need to be alone and withdraw to relive my trips better. I need to go over them again. Writing a travel journal helps me a lot with that (VF gives us this space, which is great). Then I go back outside and get back into my routines, living them fully. That’s what I did last weekend.

We take the boat to reach the Usküdar district, located on the Asian side of Istanbul. We wait a few minutes before boarding. In a public garden near the shore, small wooden houses have been built for our feline friends.

Both modern and conservative, the Usküdar district has the feel of a big village with its market, mosques, lively streets, and residential areas.

That urge to stay in that bubble between two worlds a little longer, to extend the journey, head in the clouds, like you haven’t quite landed yet... that’s exactly it! But daily life quickly takes over—just a few days, maybe a week, and it already feels distant!

If you tell your husband the sites to visit are under construction and the city is teeming with cats, I think you’ll be changing your plans 😄

In Istanbul, I’ve heard these works are never-ending... A bit like the Sagrada in Barcelona! After that, it all depends on the scale of the job. It seems we weren’t lucky, to sum up: -Blue Mosque under construction, dome hidden by tarps. -Hagia Sophia under construction, a little less chaotic than the previous one but still a frustrating visit. -The cistern, without water 🤪 -Part of Topkapi under renovation -The Chora Church completely covered by a tarp.

But the entry fees haven’t changed, and the lines are still just as long!

On the agenda for today: Topkapi, and we’ll finish the day with a stroll through "our" neighborhood, Karaköy.

Topkapi Palace was basically the modest residence of a succession of sultans for 400 years. It has four courtyards and a harem spanning 4 hectares. I thought we’d have the place to ourselves... Nope. And that there wouldn’t be any construction... Nope again.

The sultan’s cat...

The crowd...

And a few shots of the palace...

Okay, okay, the sultan’s *female* cat, then 😉

And I find your photos a bit dark. Is that how your DSLR outputs them, or do you add contrast?

I know. Yeah, I often add contrast, but it’s because my PC is calibrated that way—I always see them as too bright, so I tend to push the slider too far. When I check them on my iPad, I see the same thing you do. Gotta be careful; it’s tripping me up, even when I’m editing. Some end up in the trash.

I love photographing little things and knick-knacks. You find them everywhere in café decor, often made from upcycled objects, scraps of fabric, and other bits and bobs. It’s usually in great taste and charming.

Under the Galata Bridge, restaurants teem with a pushy vibe and tables packed with noisy tourists. On the other hand, along the quays in the Karaköy district, we discover charming little bistros. The area is a bit touristy, but nothing like the previous spot, so I don’t hold back on enjoying this stroll. We spot our dinner restaurant—a whole tempting menu of mezzes, grilled fish, and why not a little raki. I won’t regret it; these modest tables serve divine meals (though be careful not to accept the offer of a "special menu" for us without a listed price and the promise of a "great experience").

In the area, a cat perched up high...

I’m absolutely determined to get my Cartier-Bresson shot of the stunning Camondo Stairs. This amazing Art Nouveau staircase was built in the late 19th century by the Camondo family, a dynasty of financiers. It allowed the illustrious banker to easily reach one of his countless buildings. 15 minutes later, I admit defeat. I won’t get much out of it—there are too many people, and I only need four, ideally in the right spot 😇

Henri Cartier-Bresson gave us this:

Kate did this, with blurry faces and where you can’t even see the stairs 😊 (and I even heavily edited my photo with a plugin to hide the flaws)

Anyway, today it looks like this, and I think if I didn’t pull off a Cartier-Bresson shot, it’s because of those ugly trees 😏

It’s my second-to-last day in Istanbul. Furball is here, loyal since day one. She waits for me to get up with one of her kittens who managed to climb onto the balcony. He’s cute, unlike her—she hisses at me as soon as I hold out a bowl. Today, the bowl will be exceptional. -Thin slices of bread infused in casein, aged Emmental shavings, and bits of emerald-green olives flavored with crumbled salami. -Salmon croquettes from Alaska -Fine crumbs of honeyed biscuits

Women.

In this post, I’ll talk about the women of Istanbul. I don’t want to fall into the stereotype trap, but I was struck by some particularities—enough that they stood out to me. There are the "ordinary" passersby, the ones who don’t draw attention. But I came across *a lot*—really, a lot—of young girls with Botoxed lips, reshaped cheekbones, and lifted eyebrows. I’m not even talking about the overly made-up, shiny faces. Beside them, ghosts. In certain neighborhoods, a proliferation of niqabs. Not just little scarves or hijabs—no, full niqabs. (I also saw women in niqabs taking selfies. But that’s just an anecdote.)

Them.
