Hi Muriel, I stumbled upon your travel journal after coming across your Kenya journals. Thanks for sharing your experience. I see that overall the weather was a bit mixed, and it’s true that when it rains in the Seychelles, it really pours. And I don’t quite agree that you handle rain better in the tropics. Sure, it’s warm, but it’s still just as depressing as anywhere else, and the landscapes lose all their color.

We’re big fans of the distance since we’ve been there 8 times in 20 years. Sure, things have changed over time, but not drastically.

In my opinion, the island that has changed the least is Praslin, then La Digue (though there are now cars, I found last year that there were actually fewer than 7 or 8 years ago), and finally Mahé, which has changed a lot with increasingly heavy traffic and hotel constructions popping up everywhere—even if they do respect the environment.

Have a great day, Jacques

Hi there, It's true that few destinations are weather-safe, and it's getting more and more unpredictable with climate change. We've been to the Seychelles several times (between March and May and late October), and the weather was almost always gorgeous with very little rain. But we were probably lucky because the risk of heavy rain—even in the dry season—is real. Jacques

Hi Agnes, Hotels and restaurants in the Seychelles are often really expensive. The best compromise is to rent a house—rates are usually pretty good—and buy meals from takeaways, even though the options tend to be limited and repetitive. Unlike twenty years ago, when you couldn’t find anything to buy for cooking, there are now plenty of options, especially fresh fish at bargain prices. Jacques

Thanks Jacques for your kind words. You say Praslin is the island that’s changed the least—I’m not surprised, I found it the most peaceful. I had no experience with the Seychelles before this trip, and it’s true I thought there’d be less rain (just short showers, then boom! The sun comes back... which wasn’t always the case). Of course, everything’s more beautiful in the sunshine. Today we visited Delos under a completely gray sky—well, the colors and photos...😕 (but let’s stay positive, the temperature was perfect 😎)

Hi Jean François Not necessarily expensive. You can find great tips that aren’t too pricey, and once you're there, you don’t spend a ton. It’s not overly touristy either, really depends on what you compare it to. Personally, I don’t know any place where you can find yourself almost alone on beaches as incredible as the big ones (Grande Anse, Petite Anse, Anse Coco) in the south of La Digue. Same goes for Praslin, where Anse La Blague is barely visited, and even on Mahé, the walk to Anse Major leads to a small, deserted beach. I’m also thinking of Anse Marron on La Digue and so many others... Jacques

Hi Agnes, The ideal time is March to May and mid-September to mid-November, as it's generally relatively dry and not too windy. In June (we tried it last year), it's a pretty good compromise because there are few tourists, but the wind starts to pick up, and some beaches become unsuitable for swimming. Overall, the sun is often less strong during this period, as well as in July and August. Avoid December and January due to a high risk of prolonged rain. Of course, it depends on the year… Jacques

Muriel Even in Greece, everything’s leaving… we’ll be heading to the Cyclades at the end of August and early September. Enjoy! Jacques

Hi Muriel, thanks for this very realistic travel journal. My son has been living in the Seychelles for 4 years, and I’ve visited him 5 times (including once for his very simple wedding—but on a private beach / FYI: In the Seychelles, no beach is actually private; they must all be accessible. If a hotel employee tells you the beach is private, don’t be intimidated—it’s not true. In this case, it was a small beach included within a private residence). I agree with you that Anse Lazio in Praslin and Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue AREN’T the most beautiful beaches in the Seychelles (even in the sun). Plus, at certain times of the year, Anse Source d’Argent is covered in green algae. What makes it photogenic are the granite boulders (called *glacis* in the Seychelles). There are plenty of gorgeous beaches in the Seychelles (for example, on Mahé: Anse Intendance in the south, Port Launay in the northwest…). Another one I really like is Anse Soleil at the end of the road leading to Baie Lazare. You can eat well and affordably at the *Anse Soleil Café* (and also at Maria’s Rock Café on the way to Baie Lazare). Anse Major is a lovely walk: personally, when we go, we have lunch at the little beach restaurant (great fish), but it’s not always open. For the return trip, we take a boat—there’s usually one cruising offshore at certain times. Just wave it down. From memory, it’s about ten euros per person, and it gives you a different perspective. It drops you off at Bel Ombre. I won’t clutter this site with everything I could say about the Seychelles (it’s your topic), but what I can say is that you *can* stay in the Seychelles on a reasonable budget. And I’m happy to share recommendations if needed. Best regards,

Since no travel journal has been posted about this destination since 2020, I’m giving it a go—maybe it’ll jog some memories or give others a few ideas... even if, in the end, there isn’t much to tell 😎! Even though the itinerary was as classic as can be, it still led to a few brain knots: in what order? How many nights on each island? Rent a car or not? In short, plenty of existential questions to settle on 4 nights on each island, ending with Mahé to avoid any last-minute surprises before the return flight.

Saturday 22/03: Flight to Mahé with Qatar Airways (no—or rather, no more—direct flights from Paris 😕) A nice surprise at CDG with the discovery of a new lounge in Terminal 1

Then an in-depth exploration of Doha Airport thanks to (or because of) a loooong layover:

And finally, arrival at the tiny Mahé Airport where we step onto the tarmac feeling like we’ve walked into a steam room

Baggage claim is quick, the shuttle to the port is on time, the ferry is punctual (we, on the other hand, are way early ), and there’s Praslin in sight:

... with a sneak peek of the sea’s colors 🙂 A quick note on the photos: most were taken with a smartphone, and the colors are a bit more saturated than in real life (I did bring my hybrid camera, but in the end, I barely used it since it wasn’t very practical to carry around on the water or for snorkeling).

We pick up the car (a grand I10 instead of a Picanto) from a muddy parking lot (it just rained) and off we go—of course, turning on the windshield wipers instead of the blinker 😎, left-hand driving obliges. In just a few minutes, we arrive at our accommodation for these 4 nights on Praslin (Oh, the "lien" tab isn’t working! ) We’re blown away by the view from the terrace:

Then by the view from the small shared terrace on a promontory:

Before heading to test the water temperature on the other side of the road, at Anse Boudin, and spotting our first fish.

Hi Muriel, We’re heading to the Seychelles on March 21st—thanks for starting your story! We could use some practical tips on getting around the three islands: buses, bikes, cars, and inter-island travel, like ferry frequency, for example. Also, about the airport-to-port shuttle you took. For accommodations, what do you recommend? Hotels, guesthouses, Airbnb? Thanks for your feedback! Best, Marc

Hi Marc,

thanks for the start of your story

The rest is ... to follow (the end too)! 😉 I had booked the inter-island ferries a little beforehand (on seyferry.com and reserved the airport-port shuttle on the same site at the same time—it’s really convenient and well organized). After that, we rented a car, so I don’t have any opinions on other modes of transport. As for accommodations, I booked through bo..kg. Again, it’s all about personal taste ... and budget! Happy planning!

Hi Muriel,

Thanks so much for this travel journal—it finally convinced me to go! 😄

I’m looking for a "relaxing" destination with things to see and walks to take, and I think the Seychelles ticks all those boxes. Same trio in 2 weeks (5 nights in Mahé, 4 in Praslin, 4 in La Digue, and 1 last night in Mahé before the flight) in September. Before that, I’ll spend a week in the Emirates to wander around and stretch my legs in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Liwa Desert. 😊 Everything’s booked, and I actually went for apartment/bungalow-style accommodations (La Digue) that are nice (ocean view in two of them), with breakfast included in Praslin, La Digue, and the last night in Mahé. My average budget is 106 € per night for two. I’ll admit, I was expecting worse! Car rentals, though, are around 50 € per day in Mahé and 60 € in Praslin based on my initial research. The boat crossings are way pricier than what I’m used to in Asia, but that makes sense given the destination.

On the other hand, I’m gonna stop reading travel journals now 😊—Bruno (Montagnard74) convinced me to go to Australia and Kangaroo Island a few months ago (I’m heading there in the spring), and now it’s the Seychelles’ turn! 🤯

Happy end of the year, VF folks! 🎄🎉

Hi Jérôme

Yeah, reading travel journals really sparks a lot of ideas 😄 (though sadly, many of them will stay just dreams or plans for me).

I checked car rentals—we paid around 45-50 €/day for a small car... pretty expensive compared to other destinations.

Have a great trip to the Seychelles! 😎
