There we go, Calista is in full "pain-in-the-neck" mode—she doesn’t feel like getting out of the car to see the viewpoints with us…

Oh, what a relief—I was starting to think you had a clone of Camille (one of the "perfect little girls" from the Countess of Ségur’s books 😉) instead of a real little girl! For a moment, I had my doubts !

All jokes aside, your photos and story are such a treat in this November weather, with its dead leaves and nasty showers. Thanks for this armchair adventure 🙂.

Also, I’d never heard of "easy cheese" in a tube… it really looks practical, but seriously—does it actually taste good?
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
So what’s so special about this Modelo Especial?

Well... I’m not really sure, since I don’t usually like beer, as I mentioned earlier! It doesn’t have much bitterness aftertaste, which is what I liked, I think! Since then, I’ve tried others and found that some blond beers go down pretty well.

How long does it take to drive the track?

With a sedan, about 40 minutes.
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
I was thinking the kids might be used to hiking with you.

We trained them in the spring before leaving !😉 But they found it way less fun to walk in Picardy—they complained a lot more here !
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
Thanks Laure!

Also, I didn’t know about "easy cheese" in a tube... it really seems practical, but no joke, is it actually good?

You can’t compare it to real French cheese, but yeah, we really liked it in our sandwiches! It doesn’t need to be refrigerated—that’s super practical! My favorite: a raisin bagel with cheddar easy cheese! !😎
FA Fay2 Veteran ·
Hi Peggy, So we’ll try the beer while thinking of you ;) and why not the easy cheese too—let’s have some fun!

With a sedan, about 40 minutes.

Really? Well, if we do it, it’ll be like you—chill pace, because I won’t be too confident on the dirt road (scared of getting a flat!). But a 1h20 round trip on the dirt road? Honestly, I’m not sure I’ll do it, even though every time I see new photos, I think… it must be really amazing… but I’m worried about spending too much time in the car that day. Torrey—Tropic via Burr Trail Road and Kodachrome already adds up to 5 hours of driving! So it’s a tough choice… We want to keep Kodachrome for a late-afternoon hike because we don’t want a day spent *only* in the car, even if the landscapes are stunning. So it’ll be either Burr Trail Road (at least 2 hours of driving) or Devil’s Garden (1h20 of dirt road)... !

Tuesday, July 15

This morning, we’re exploring Capitol Reef a bit more. After waking up at 7:30 AM and having breakfast on the terrace, we’re at the Visitor Center by 9:00. I buy a magnet to add to the collection, then we chat with a Ranger. There’s a risk of a flash flood this afternoon, so she advises us to head straight to Capitol Gorge this morning.

The walk passes between high walls, and the path is completely flat. It’s not difficult, and it’s pretty, but the kids aren’t exactly thrilled—probably too flat!

They talk about video games while walking (I remember something about building a bridge in Animal Crossing!).

Yannick climbs up to The Tank while the kids and I wait below. They’ve found something to do—they’re drawing in the sand like we’re at the beach! Did you spot the little gnomes at the bottom?

We retrace our steps, pick up the car, and enjoy the scenery again...

...until we reach the Fruita oasis.

We stop at Gifford’s House to buy some pies and have a snack (even though it’s not really snack time—it’s already 11:30 AM!). Yannick and Hugo pick a strawberry-rhubarb pie, which is amazing, and they finish the whole thing. Calista and I go for a classic apple pie, but apparently the label didn’t match—we end up with a cherry pie. It’s *so* sweet! Way too much for us, we can only eat a little. The rest of the cherry pie gets mixed into plain yogurt later.

Next, we stop at the school. From the outside, it looks tiny—we’re really surprised to see so many desks in such a small space!

We’d planned to do Hickman Bridge, but no one feels like walking anymore. We’d rather hit the road, knowing our goal is to reach Park City tonight.

So, we’re off for about 4 hours of driving. Looking at the GPS for the next towns to pass through, I suggest stopping in Sigurd for lunch. But once we get there, there’s nothing, and the town looks like a shantytown! Mobile homes, unkempt houses, yards that look like junkyards... Obviously, we keep going! We also pass through Salina, which doesn’t look any more appealing, and finally stop in Gunnison to grab some groceries. Hugo complains because we’re eating “sandwiches *again*!” We find a park with big trees for shade and a playground for the kids—Gunnison City Park. The break is really nice! We stopped late for lunch (thanks to the pies at 11:30 AM!), so it’s already 3:00 PM when we get back on the road. There’s still about 2 hours left until our hotel in Park City.

We arrive around 5:00 PM. After settling into our room, we split into two groups: the lazy ones and the sporty ones. The lazy ones head to the pool to enjoy the sun, while the sporty ones tackle the nearby mountains for a run. Well... the “sporty team” is really just Yannick!

In the evening, we treat ourselves to a little restaurant. We’d read good reviews about Rustic Creek Grille, which is right in the hotel. We only order burgers, but they’re excellent! The only downside of the meal is that we have to get up every 10 minutes—either Yannick or me—to check if there’s space in the laundry. There are only two washers and two dryers, and they’re swamped tonight, so we struggle a bit to do our laundry. Luckily, this was the only time on the trip it was this difficult.

After dinner, we leave the kids in front of the TV and go for a short digestive walk, but the hotel isn’t in a very lively part of Park City, so we head back pretty quickly.

Hotel: Park City Peaks in Park City, 71 € with breakfast Day’s summary: Great morning—we really loved Capitol Reef and can’t wait to go back next time. There’s still so much to do there (Hickman Bridge, Cohab Canyon, Sulphur Creek trail, Cathedral Valley...). As for the afternoon, well... it was basically 4 hours of driving and a place to sleep, but we had to get up to Yellowstone, and we didn’t want to do a huge driving day (like 10 hours on the road). That’s why we split the trip in two and made the most of it—it *is* vacation, after all!

Hi!

While chatting with Laurent and Virginie (VallM17 from VF), who we met in Yellowstone, we might’ve found the explanation: we figured the waitress must’ve been a minor and therefore wasn’t allowed to handle alcohol… and since we’re in Utah… But still, not even touching a bottle? That’s a bit much!

Yep, the cashier at the Las Vegas supermarket told us he couldn’t ring up our beer cans because he was underage. He had to call his manager (who was of age!) to do it. I’m not sure handling a can at the register is the biggest temptation… especially in Vegas!! But it’s the law! Or, as Thibaud put it, maybe she was Mormon. Or Mormon *and* underage. 😮

Yep, we had the same realization: if it’s flat and all laid out, they don’t have fun!!! They need some climbing, cairns to spot, passages to find... That’s probably why they enjoy hikes less at home (I think Charente-Maritime and Oise are pretty much the same in terms of terrain!).

We stop at Gifford’s House to buy some pies and have a snack (even though it’s not really snack time—it’s already 11:30 AM!).

Ahhh, so it’s because of foodies like you that we were left wanting!!! Because by 4 PM snack time (the *normal* time for a snack 😛), there were no cakes or pies left to buy 😕

Honestly, the "sports team" is just Yannick!

😄😄

Didn’t you even take a quick trip to the Park City outlets??? 😮

Hi Peggy,

Jumping in late like you—just catching up on the last two days posted.

Honestly, Route 12 is indescribable. I don’t know it well, but it just begs for road trips and stops along the way🙂🙂

Calista’s now in full "pain-in-the-neck" mode—she doesn’t want to get out of the car to see the viewpoints with us…

Poor thing 😕 Maybe she’s just tired.

Anyway, it’s time to enjoy the view from the pool! If you go around 5:30 PM, you’ll have it all to yourselves. It’s such a great spot!

Gorgeous😎

I think Charente-Maritime and Oise are pretty similar in terms of terrain!

Oh, I don’t know! I thought Oise was totally flat when we got here, but there are some nice elevation changes in places! 😉 But it’s true—nothing beats a great hike in the Vosges with a view of the Alsace plain at the end... Can’t deny where we’re from!

Not even a quick stop at the Park City outlets??? 😮

Nope, we’d already spent all our cash at the Vegas outlets! And then a little more at a shop in Kanab selling Levi’s and Converse!

Hello Peggy,

Even without commenting, I’ve been following your travel journal pretty closely.

They talk about video games while walking (I remember something about building a bridge in Animal Crossing!).

Oh! That remark takes me back a few years. On hikes, that’s exactly how it was. Sometimes they’d lag behind us (always within sight) and chat about their games. Now they’re older, and the topics have shifted to fashion, boy-girl relationships, social media... it’s their little private moment, I guess.

Day 10 – Wednesday, July 16

Second day on the road today: since it didn’t look too long on paper (4 hours 10 minutes with no traffic according to Google Maps to Jackson), we didn’t rush this morning. No alarm clock, we woke up naturally at 8:30 AM. Then we went for breakfast, which wasn’t mentioned when we booked but was actually included in the night’s price.

At 10:30 AM, we finally hit the road! But before leaving Park City, Yannick took us to see the stunning homes he’d run past yesterday. Park City really has some beautiful neighborhoods! Too bad I didn’t even take a photo…

Alright, this time we’re really on our way. It’s 11:00 AM, so factoring in the drive and lunch break, we should arrive at the hotel around 4:30 PM…

But we hadn’t counted on a massive traffic jam: we were completely stuck for loooong minutes. We never get stuck in traffic jams in France—we always plan around them (leaving at night or on a weekday). Well, now I know why! I really can’t stand being stuck, especially not knowing why we’re not moving… I feel like a pressure cooker about to explode! Eventually, we started moving and got a glimpse of what happened. There was even TV coverage! It was on the other side: a truck carrying flammable material had exploded and literally shattered the road for a good hundred meters! They’ll have to set up a detour, probably making our side two-way traffic. Meanwhile, cars on the opposite side were completely stopped for miles, and that’s when we realized we were actually lucky—we ended up getting through.

We crossed the vast plains of Wyoming. The road was straight and long, with not much to see. No real towns along the way to grab groceries, so we pulled over and had leftovers for lunch (though we didn’t have much left—some beef jerky, sliced bread, and apples). We also stopped in Etna for ice cream. The owner asked if we’d sign his wooden table—it was almost entirely covered with signatures from people all over the world.

We followed the Snake River, where people were rafting.

We finally arrived at the Virginian Lodge in Jackson at 5:30 PM. After checking in, the kids jumped in the pool, but we only let them stay for a quick 15 minutes. Too bad—the place was really nice, set right in the middle of the buildings, but we didn’t have time to enjoy it.

We’d booked the evening at Bar J, so it was time to go.

It wasn’t far from Jackson, but there were quite a few people on the road. We checked in at the counter at 6:30 PM to pay for our meals (the reservation had been made by phone from France http://www.barjchuckwagon.com). Since we were among the last to arrive, we were seated at table A12, all the way at the back. Well, let’s look on the bright side—we were also closer to the doors, so it wouldn’t be as hot! And we could sit on the table during the show without bothering anyone.

We took some time to walk around the site first, then headed to our seats.

Dinner started being served at 7:00 PM sharp, and there were over 500 people to feed! It was quite the operation. We grabbed our tin plates and got in line. Everything was served in the same dish, from the main course to dessert! I went for a chicken and beef BBQ combo, while Yannick had the BBQ Pork Rib. The meat came with a potato, beans, applesauce, a piece of spiced cake, and some kind of bread. For drinks, they served lemonade and coffee.

What I found a bit disappointing was that the show didn’t start until 8:00 PM. I would’ve preferred listening to the songs while eating. There was quite a bit of chatter in English that we didn’t always understand, but the songs were nice. We had a great time.

On the way back to the hotel, we spotted a moose by the side of the road. Sorry, it’s super blurry… but it’s the only one we managed to photograph during our whole trip up north…

Hotel: Virginian Lodge in Jackson 94.35 € Day’s summary: The start of the day wasn’t great—we spent more time on the road than planned, and since we took it easy in the morning, it ate up a good chunk of the day… But the evening was really fun and made up for the rest!

Hi Peggy,

We can still see the moose pretty well—you managed to get a side shot, and it even looks like it’s looking at you! We saw one in Grand Teton NP, but it didn’t want to pose for a photo. There were too many tourists stopping to try to get close, so it turned its back on us and wandered off toward the water.

The only moose heads I’ve got in my Wyoming photos are the ones on the pool buoys at the Virginian Lodge!

Good call on the show at J Bar.

See you soon!

Hi Peggy, I’ve been following your travel journal closely and I really admire how sporty your little family is. I know most of the places you’ve been to since I’ve been there a few times myself, but I’ve discovered that by hiking on foot, you’ve seen some wonders that lazy folks like us miss—we’re not really used to walking (we’re more into motorcycles and cars, but we still know how to stop and take the time to explore a little...). I just wanted to say *bravissimo*! Looking forward to reading the rest of your adventures. Cheers, Chris

Day 11 Thursday, July 17

This morning, we’re taking a little stroll around Jackson since we didn’t have time last night. The town of Jackson doesn’t feel super authentic—it’s kind of like an amusement park—but I still really like it!

After that, we head to Grand Teton. We take Route 191, the one that loops around. We’ll take Teton Road in a few days to head back down.

The mountains are gorgeous—I love this kind of landscape—but I’ll admit it’s not *that* different from what we have back home in the Alps. Yannick’s a little disappointed, actually. He thought we’d be *inside* the mountains, but instead, we’re just circling around them from a distance.

We make our first stop at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center. The parking lot is packed—it’s not easy to find a spot. The building is made of wood and has a really cool modern design. I buy a magnet, grab a park map, and then we head toward Mormon Row. It’s swarming with Chinese tourists, so it’s almost like you need a ticket just to take a photo—but we manage in the end!

Next, along Route 191, we stop at Snake River Overlook,

Oxbow Bend Turnout,

and Willow Flats Overlook.

The sky’s a little hazy, and the mountain peaks aren’t standing out as much against the background.

At lunchtime, we eat at a cafeteria in Colter Bay. Wow—free Wi-Fi! But let’s not get too excited; that won’t be the case once we’re in Yellowstone…
PE Peggy16 Globetrotter ·
Continuation of Day 11, Thursday, July 17

After the meal, I think it’s the digestion, but we both feel like taking a nap. The road seems really monotonous—nothing but forest. We make a few short stops to wake up: the first at the Yellowstone entrance sign (with yet another horde of Chinese tourists—this will be a constant during our stay in the park).

The second to watch a marmot.

And the third at Kepler Cascades.

But it’s still tough to stay awake, and we’re thrilled to arrive at Old Faithful around 4:00 PM.

We pick up our cabin right away and take a little break there. It’s small and spartan—Yannick was actually pretty "scared" about the lack of comfort we’d find! In the end, opinions differ on this cabin: personally, I slept really well. The lack of a bathroom wasn’t an issue since there was a shared restroom just 100 meters away, and I even loved the simplicity and closeness to nature. It felt like camping but with a good bed! It’s a great memory, and I’d go back tomorrow! Meanwhile, Yannick put up with it for two nights without a toilet, but he wouldn’t have wanted it to last any longer. He thought the cabin was old and creaky whenever you walked. Either way, we both appreciated being right on-site and not having to drive another 50 minutes to West Yellowstone. There you go—hope this helps some of you decide! Too bad we were so tired we forgot to take photos.

By 5:00 PM, we’re more or less refreshed. We discover the joys of having a cabin in nature—a little chipmunk makes friends with us and almost came into the room!

Then we head off to explore part of Old Faithful before our meet-up with Virginie and her family (VallM17).

No luck for us—we spot a geyser erupting in the distance, but it’s hidden behind pine trees. By the time we reach Castle Geyser, the show’s just ending.

We don’t go much farther—it’s time to head to the cafeteria for our 6:00 PM meet-up! We chat about our experiences in the U.S. over the past few days, watch Old Faithful erupt in the rain, eat together at the cafeteria, and the kids play outside like they’ve known each other forever. We have a really great evening! And once again, we forget to take photos!

We say goodbye around 9:00 PM and decide to take a walk around Geyser Hill until it’s too dark to see. The atmosphere here at dusk is amazing—and what a luxury to be staying right on-site!

Accommodation: Old Faithful Lodge cabin with shared bathroom 65 € Day’s summary: A beautiful day! No single spot blew me away today, but the combination of lovely landscapes, peaceful vibes, and perfect weather made it great. We’re really enjoying it here! The only downside is that I’ve been getting eaten alive by mosquitoes ever since we got to Jackson—and apparently, they only like me!

It’s always a pleasure to discover it through a different lens with each travel journal.

Hi Peggy,

We loved both parks: Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

I loved the Grand Teton mountains reflecting in the lakes, especially with the evening light and colors (we spent 2 nights in a "Tent Cabin" at Colter Bay Village, near Jackson Lake).

And the western *Shane* ("The Man from the Lost Valleys") made me think of the Grand Teton NP landscapes again.

We also slept at the Old Faithful site. We spent one night in a "Budget Cabin" and were happy with our choice. The cabin room was great, the bed was comfortable. The restrooms were outside a few meters away, but we knew that when we booked. We really appreciated being able to sleep right near the geyser site and enjoy it in the evening and the next morning early when there are few tourists.

Can't wait for the rest!

True, staying on-site has its perks. Walking among the geysers almost alone must’ve been really nice. That said, the drive between West Yellowstone and Madison isn’t too long or uninteresting—the scenery is pretty, you see animals, and West Yellowstone is cheaper for groceries and gas. Everyone’s got to weigh the pros and cons...

The only thing I might regret is that I’ve been eaten alive by mosquitoes ever since we got to Jackson… and apparently, they only like me!

Well, there you go—I’m not the only one getting attacked by mosquitoes 😛

I set the alarm for 7:30 AM, but everyone else is still asleep. I head to the bathroom block; it’s a bit chilly, and I don’t run into many people. I love this morning coolness and the scents of the park at dawn—it brings back memories of my youth and camping (though when I say camping, we went in a caravan with my parents—I’ve never slept in a tent!).

The rest of the family wakes up at 8:30 AM. We have breakfast in the room and then start exploring the geysers at 9:30 AM. As we leave our cabin, we’re lucky enough to see Old Faithful erupting again right away.

We keep going and pass by Pump Geyser,

Sponge Geyser,

Doublet Pool,

Beach Spring,

Ear Spring,

Belgian Pool,

and Economic Geyser.

It’s 10:00 AM when we reach Grand Geyser. It’s scheduled to erupt within a 3-hour window between 9:15 AM and 12:15 PM. Since it’s only 10:00 AM, if it goes off around noon, we’d end up waiting 2 hours on the spot—we’ve barely started our walk! We decide to keep moving. We pass by Beauty Pool,

Chromatic Pool,

and take a short break on the bridge over the Firehole River. It’s 10:20 AM.

And then—what do we see in the distance?! Grand Geyser erupting! We really didn’t have a clue! So we start running to catch it anyway—it lasts long enough.

Continuation of Day 12, Friday, July 18

After that rush, we continue our journey at a more relaxed pace. We pass by Giant Geyser

and other pools whose names I didn’t catch

then we arrive at Morning Glory Pool. And wow, I fell in love! The colors are so beautiful, it’s absolutely stunning!

We’re starting to get hungry, so a quick stop at the store is a must. After our snack break, we treat ourselves to a little something sweet: some delicious ice cream. They’re so huge that we only get one scoop and share it between two. Then, we visit the old hotel, Old Faithful Inn. It’s really beautiful, but it’s packed with people.

Our last stop on the way is the Visitor Center.

By then, it’s 1:30 PM, and we’re exhausted! Turns out walking on those boardwalks is tiring after all! Since our cabin is just 100 meters away, we’re quickly lying down on our beds for a much-needed nap! We don’t manage to get up again until 4:00 PM. But that still leaves us plenty of time to enjoy the place.

This time, we take the car. Heading to the Fairy Falls parking lot to climb the hill facing Grand Prismatic. The climb isn’t super easy—we slip, the tree trunks are charred, and Calista gets dirt all over her legs trying to step over a log (but it comes off easily in the end). Anyway, we finally reach a decent height! Wow, the view is truly amazing! It’s clear you shouldn’t just settle for the view from the boardwalks below… But now that I’ve seen other photos, I realize we could’ve climbed even higher!

Even though you shouldn’t just settle for the view from below, it’s obvious we’re not going to skip it! Here’s what it looks like from the boardwalks.

And the view of Excelsior Geyser:

After that, it’s already 5:30 PM, and we move on to Biscuit Basin.

We pass by Sapphire Pool.

End of Day 12, Friday, July 18

We continue with Black Sand Basin. Cliff Geyser

Green Spring

Emerald Pool

Sunset Lake

Back to the cafeteria where we have the same meal as the day before. When we go outside, the sun is setting over Old Faithful. And then we get to see an eruption against a blue and pink sky… it’s absolutely stunning!

Hi Peggy, You weren’t commissioned by Itat by any chance to write this part of your travel journal, were you? This enthusiasm and those spectacular photos seem a bit fishy to me!... 😉 😏

I thought the same thing afterward: darn, we didn’t even think to take photos!!! What a shame 😕

I actually told Yannick yesterday that it’s a good thing he’s the one with the camera 95% of the time because if it were me, we’d barely have any photos... I live the moments, I look, I breathe, I enjoy the present... I store it all in my memory and forget to take photos!

I was just thinking of you when I uploaded these photos !😉) I thought the same thing...

Nope, Pierre, not at all! But there really is something special about this park—such a relaxing vibe despite all the tourists. You just can’t help but love it!

Hi Peggy,

Those gorgeous photos of Old Faithful at sunset really show one of the perks of staying overnight. I think your husband didn’t regret the lodging choice, even though the bathrooms weren’t in the room.

Thanks so much for this travel journal, and see you soon!

Hello Peggy,

It’s been ages since I last wrote in your travel journal, but I still follow it with great interest!

I loved Devil’s Garden, Yant Flat, and VoF—all three are on my wish list for my next trip...

And now Yellowstone! My kids weren’t really into this park... Too many geysers for their taste . Personally, I loved it and would happily go back...

Keep up the great work.

Laure

PS: Have you already done the 2015 program?
