Hi Julie, Thanks for stopping by! 🙂 I didn’t see any bear trainers, and even if I had, I wouldn’t have taken a photo. I’m not really into that.

Hi Kate. Hi there, and thanks for this feedback with such a unique feline perspective... It reminded me of my Istanbul getaway—two years ago already... I loved this city, a blend of East and West, and back then, the restoration work on the monuments wasn’t so widespread... What I loved most was the atmosphere, the smells, the food, but also the warmth of the people. I went on a whim, with no preconceptions or prejudices, and I have such great memories of that city trip! But I don’t remember there being *this* many cats!!! 😄

Hi Bruno, You’ve gotta keep your eyes peeled! And yet, they’re definitely there—some 165,000 cats living among the people ;)

Friday, October 25

Last day in Istanbul... And still so much to see and do!

What if I took a trip to the Princes' Islands?... No, never mind, it's too much for one day... I feel like getting lost again in the narrow streets of Galata and finding the Camondo Stairs, or just wandering along the quays at Eminönü... Oh, I know, I'd love to go back to the markets and haggle over another Nazar Boncuk... And then there's that blue vase—it hasn't moved from its display...

My Cartoville mentions the neighborhoods of Fatih, Fener, Balat, Eyüp, and Hasköy. Why not? And it’ll be my highlight of the week.

The bus drops us off in front of a white church, the Bulgarian St. Stephen Orthodox Church.

Hello

A wonderful travel journal... I always enjoy exploring Istanbul (or Istambul—both are correct) even through someone else’s travel journal. Istanbul is one of my favorite cities in the world. Thanks for sharing about the cats (it’s true, this city takes care of its four-legged strays!)
KA Kate Globetrotter ·
Thanks! 🙂 Maybe, like you, Istanbul will make it into my top 5 favorite cities. There’s still an open spot between Venice, New York, Seville, and Kyoto. But there are so many more to discover...!

I’m walking around this beautiful white church and come across a shoe shiner. Just as he passes by me, he drops a brush. And here’s a shout-out to you, Diamina—if you’re reading this, I just want to say I’m so grateful! You explained that it was a little scam. 😎 I pick up the brush because I’m polite and keep going. My friend doesn’t get why I’m brushing off this guy who’s insisting on thanking me. He’s already set up, tools ready to go. "Just leave him, let’s go—it’s a scam, and my boots are fine anyway!"

We follow the boulevard to reach the working-class neighborhood of Fener. Some quirky little workshops catch my eye with their old-world charm.

We head up a first street and take a maze of steep alleys where the houses seem to sag under a rainbow of laundry. It’s like stepping into another era... I realize I’m discovering a whole new side of Istanbul.

I hear the sound of quick footsteps, accompanied by a rumbling that sounds like a cart. I turn around and see a man pulling a kind of enormous trailer filled with various objects, probably meant to be thrown away. But how does he do it? The man is tall, with generous biceps and disheveled hair. His beauty is breathtaking. He stops beside me and locks his big green eyes onto mine. My camera, which is always ready to snap, won’t respond. I’m melting. Tut - Tut - Tut - tutututututututututututututututu....

The coffee, I guess that’s the thing on the left. On the right, let’s just say it’s mouthwash, but what’s in the middle? Turkish delight?

I had a feeling I’d love everything about this neighborhood 😇 We wander through Balat, Istanbul’s historic Jewish quarter, once a working-class area. Now the hipsters are moving in. But it’s the good kind of hipster. I, for one, love it. The vibrant boutiques, cafés, and artist studios sit alongside old wooden houses. Still, the place doesn’t seem to get many visitors...

We’re soaking up this treasure-filled labyrinth one last time...

...before climbing up to the Fatih district, which feels much more "religious." A charming little square offers benches that invite you to rest. I look around at this neighborhood life—some people playing cards, others doing their shopping, and kids playing with the cats. Outside one shop, a rack displays black dresses with hijabs, niqabs, and burqas to choose from. A woman hesitates. Will she pick a black dress or *another* black dress? I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be French... People watch us with curiosity, but their gazes are kind, and their smiles are gentle.

I just flipped through the seven pages of this travel journal again to relive all those images... You beautifully wrap it up with that bohemian touch I love, where new cats you encountered naturally weave in.

I really loved your approach—you managed to surprise me.

I’d seen other journals (like Vazyvite’s), other photos... and some old documentaries that fascinated me a while back (especially about old houses or palaces along the Bosphorus). Of course, I recognize a certain vibe and some familiar details, but your perspective feels quite different.

I was expecting to see certain images, but I’m discovering others... This journal, more bohemian than Grand Bazaar, suits you perfectly and makes me even more eager to go!

(The pink lokum looks like a marshmallow...)

End of the story, goodbye Istanbul, thanks to everyone 🙂

While the story was entertaining and original, the ending felt a bit abrupt ^^

And unlike the red-haired girl from Isère, if Istanbul was in the soft spot of my VAVs, it’ll stay there. Oh well, there are the cuties. No biggie, I’ll just keep hunting for them in Venice 😛

Thanks, Catherine, what you said makes me so happy. Finding the right balance is tricky—some practical info but not too much, a touch of emotions, a few dashes of humor, and, for me, especially photos that are as polished as possible. I spent a lot of time sorting, selecting, and editing them.

@Masterpo

While we were lulled by a fun and original story, the ending felt a bit abrupt ^^

Oh no, nothing’s ever really over—the proof is we’re still talking! 😛 I never meant to make anyone want to... When you’re stuck on something with preconceptions, it’s complicated, and I feel the same way about other destinations. But curiosity has pushed me to take trips that weren’t even on my list before.

@Bluequark Thanks 🙂

Hi Kate, I’m finally caught up on your travels! Istanbul is also on my VAV list 😉... but given all the construction you mentioned, I’ll have to wait a bit! Well, before the green-eyed Stamboulite gets too old As usual, your travel journal is a pleasure to read. Great photos too—they really bring your story to life, even with all those cats... a whole different side of the city, one I probably wouldn’t have seen since I’m more the type to avoid them 😉 That’s what’s so great about these journals—every perspective is different and SO enriching. I really loved the diversity of women, the street scenes, and those charmingly run-down old neighborhoods. Can’t wait for the next one! 🙂

Hi Catherine, you introduced me to a city I honestly didn’t know—I’d only spent 3 days there. But I didn’t get that crowded feeling, even at Hagia Sophia. I was there in early November, not the best time for the Mediterranean region, but it was so close to my place in Tirana.

My highlights: The Blue Mosque at dusk in the empty courtyard, the muezzin’s call blasting through the speakers—I was completely mesmerized. The view from my bedroom window high above, overlooking the Bosphorus opening into the Sea of Marmara, thinking about all the weight of history in that spot. Wandering across the Galata Bridge, watching the many fishermen. A mosque on the Asian side, where the courtyard was full of cats and the imam was feeding them. When I asked why, he looked up to the sky and said, "God entrusted them to me."

I don’t have any photos left from those three days—life’s ups and downs and moving around took care of that. In a bit of a Balkan style, I can’t remember which book I read this in, but the author said: *I don’t know which country I’m from because the borders have changed so often since I was born.* I’ll share a photo of my cats (I have way more photos of them than of actual places). This one was taken in Sarajevo, another city that captivated me. I’ve been back several times, though I did spend a few months there during the siege. I loved the neighborhoods on the hills with the old Ottoman cemeteries spilling outside their walls, those centuries-old gravestones, and the small mosques with their black minarets.

The most remarkable! I once had the same experience in Yugoslavia (it was in 1987). I didn’t freeze in place, but it was close... Tall, dark-haired, almond-shaped green eyes, and one of those looks that could knock you off your feet—a wild beauty in all its simplicity. But let’s stick to the theme of Istanbul’s cats, or risk turning your travel journal into a collection of confessions 🙂

Hello, I’d already read/seen your Japan travel journal, and your photographer’s "eye" really touched me. Same goes for this one—thank you for this delightful moment. I visited Istanbul in 1989 and 1991 (before and after the Gulf War), but after my only experience of returning to a country I’d visited 20 years earlier, I swore I’d never do it again. Your journal might just make me change my mind, though—it’s sparked some long reflections. Safe travels, Kate! Ghislaine

These are chestnuts (kestane), they're even sold in sealed packaging with syrup. Today, the weather should be pretty nice in Turkey too. The city is really densely populated—16 million is no small number. I live in this European part of the Orient and sometimes go to Turkey in just an hour and a half by car at most. Over a weekend or 1 or 2 nights, we soak up all the oriental vibes. Greece is only 20 km farther than my favorite stopover, Odrine (Edirne), in Turkey. Check out the knives (shepherd’s knives) from Bursa with horn or other handles. The exchange rate is really good right now...

Thanks, Lolita. It’s totally normal for a city to change in 20 years. Especially in that part of the world! I couldn’t be disappointed since I’d never been there. My travel buddy had experienced Istanbul in 2001—she noticed huge changes but loved it just as much. She just told me she wants to go back! 😉
