40 minutes isn’t much, really... Honestly, I couldn’t say for sure since I always book at least 1h30 to be safe. I’ve never tried a 40-minute connection.

But the risk is that if you miss your flight, you’ll end up losing way more time in the end...

We used to say that connections would wait, but a lot has changed. I get the feeling airlines don’t bother much with missed connections anymore...

I find it more and more ridiculous—those booking sites like Liligo and others offering 30-hour flights to Miami or Phoenix! It’s total nonsense!

I had a hard time finding a last-minute ticket with decent layovers myself. On the way there, I had a 5h30 layover at the London airport—so long... 😎

A lot of travelers buy cheap flights and end up spending as much time traveling as they would to get to Australia...

Hey Olive, Thanks for sharing the great moments from your trip! I especially loved this photo:

Seriously, as soon as there’s a ray of sunshine these days, that’s exactly the position I take—stretched out to soak up as much warmth as possible... 😏 Otherwise, congrats on that spontaneous job offer! I wonder if your mountain-bike-tanned face had something to do with it? 😎

Hi Josiane,

Thanks to you, I’m almost at the end, and unfortunately, the best part is already behind me 🤪 But at this point in the trip, all you can think about is coming back very soon!

I think next time I’ll visit fewer cities and even more parks... That’s really my thing! ;)

Tuesday, November 19:

Woke up in Santa Barbara. I find this coastal city pretty nice, but nothing to write home about...

My first experience here last night was pretty rough—I spent a good hour searching for a motel. 🤪 I even ended up at a hotel where the guy was listening behind the door to figure out what I wanted (impossible to get him to open it or make myself understood). Seriously, what do people come to a motel for? Pizza? Train tickets?... I give up!

After a short night in a Motel 6, I head to the seaside. A little walk on the beach, the Pier, and I grab a good breakfast at a small snack spot. Santa Barbara feels like a ghost town in November. Just a few retirees and joggers sharing the sidewalk.

I’m starting to feel the end of the trip coming... In three days, I’m flying home, and I’m almost at the end of my journey. My mountain bike feels like a distant memory—I’ve barely touched it since SFO.

Next time I do a mountain biking trip, I promise I’ll avoid cities and focus on wide-open spaces!

For now, I’m hitting the road toward Anaheim. I’ve decided to treat myself to a day at Disney tomorrow to end this trip on a happy note!

Driving between Santa Barbara and Anaheim. Back to the California life of L.A.... After about three hours of traffic, I finally arrive in Anaheim.

I check into a Best Western to sleep a little better than I did in that Motel 6 last night, and then I’m off on another adventure.

My goal is to head to Riverside, where a well-known street artist has his studio. His name is Jeff Soto. I’ve always been intrigued by his work, and just seeing where he creates would be amazing—no need to hope for more. I arrive in Riverside, where I *think* I’ve spotted his studio, and sure enough, I end up in front of a storefront with a huge warehouse behind it. There’s light coming from the studio...

Alright, I didn’t come all this way to turn back now. I decide to go for it and knock on the door. A head pops out from the studio door. I wave desperately. A guy around 25 comes over and opens the door. It’s Jophen Stein, a young and very promising artist.

The guy is super chill and quickly lets me into the studio to show me his work in progress, then into Jeff Soto’s studio, where I get to see several paintings—including one he’s still working on! Wow, I’m in Jeff Soto’s studio! (Okay, fine, 99% of French people wouldn’t care...)

Jeff Soto isn’t there, unfortunately, but hey, I got into his studio—that’s not nothing. After all, what I really wanted was to see his artwork.

I tell Jophen Stein about my trip, and he thinks it’s awesome. He loves the idea of me leaving my mountain bike with someone, saying the person is lucky!

Anyway, after nearly an hour of chatting and discovering treasures he pulls out from every corner of the studio, I decide to let him get back to work. I’m already grateful he welcomed me in like that.

I leave without having seen Jeff Soto, but I’m really happy about the encounter and getting to see those incredible paintings.

Next stop... Well, let’s go completely in the opposite direction—Venice and Santa Monica! I’ll take advantage of a little time before sunset to ride my mountain bike one last time. Not too many photos to share, unfortunately... Let’s just say I enjoyed the moment more than I took pictures! 😉

Then a few time-lapse scenes on the beach. Time to head back to the hotel.

Thursday, November 7: ........ The road is still closed due to the landslide on Highway 89, but a detour allows access to Page (Lake Powell) via Highway 168, which was paved for the occasion all the way to Lake Powell.

Good evening, I just finished reading your great travel journal. I can’t find Highway 168 on Google Maps. Thanks to you, I discovered that Highway 89 was blocked, but I don’t see how you got through?? Highway 897 seems like the logical way to go from the Grand Canyon to Page—a route I’m planning to take in a month. I’m preparing a camper van trip to explore "the West," unfortunately without a bike this time. I’ve traveled by bike before but never with a camper van, so you’ve got to adapt! 🙂...

Could you tell me where Highway 168 is located, please?

Hi there I don’t know the exact route numbers, but the 89 is “replaced” by the 89T, which is the old Route 20 on NAVAJO Nation land.

Hi, Yeah, the road is the 89T... Not sure if the number changed or if I read it backward 😛 I didn’t know about this road, but it’s really great! On Google Maps, it doesn’t look paved 🙂...

Wednesday, November 20:

A Disneyland day! I splurged on the one-day pass valid for both parks—over $130, if I remember right. 🤪

This is my third time at Disneyland, but the first time solo. No problem—I make the most of the attractions, especially since being alone means no waiting in line! At my first ride, the CastMember tells me that since I’m alone, I can use a special line to fill the ride vehicles. Woohoo! I take full advantage of this all day, cutting the line legally and with Mickey’s blessing!

I revisited a few attractions I already knew, but my big discovery of 2013 was the *Cars* ride. It starts slow—you’re in a car surrounded by Route 66-style scenery in Radiator Springs. Then suddenly, it’s a wild race! The cars take off on an incredible chase. Absolute blast! I loved it and rode it multiple times. 😉😛

Not much else to say about this day except that it was a trip down memory lane (though, let’s be real, I’ve always been a kid at heart). 😎

Thursday, November 21st:

I’ve got a meet-up today in Newport Beach to give my mountain bike to a student I met in Monument Valley! Not sure if you remember, but I ran into a French student right after biking the Monument Valley loop, and we set a meet-up for around 3 PM in front of the campus (In-N-Out parking lot) on November 21, 2014. For those who didn’t follow along, you’d have to go back to Sunday, November 10th for the meet-cute.

I grab a good breakfast, didn’t wake up too early, and decide to take it easy driving to the coast, enjoying the ocean views and the ride.

Heading to Laguna Beach, my favorite spot on the coast. No comments needed. The beach here is different from the others in the area. I take a nice walk along the beach below the cliffs.

Back toward Newport Beach, I make a little detour to Balboa Island—a real gem of a place.

I head to the campus and luckily find the meet-up spot pretty easily. Cool, I park in the lot around 2:15 PM, no worries, I’ll just wait and grab a bite while surrounded by hundreds of students. 😎

My mountain bike’s pretty dirty! 😉

It’s funny seeing students driving Mercedes, Ford Mustangs, and more. Clearly, campus life here has nothing to do with the life of our students in France, who can barely afford the bus! 3 PM rolls around, and I get ready to hand over my trusty mountain bike with a little pang in my heart, but hey, I figure it’s going to a young student who’ll get good use out of it, so it feels like I’m doing a good deed. 🙂

3:15 PM… He’s probably running a little late. 😉 3:30 PM… Now I’m starting to doubt. 🤪

3:45 PM… I think he’s not coming. 😕

4:00 PM… He totally stood me up! Grrrrrrr 🏴‍☠️

By 4:05 PM, I’m pretty annoyed and decide to leave. Wasted my time for some nice French student who ghosted me. What’s up with that? Pfff 🤪

I’m disgusted at the thought of trying to do something nice for someone and ending up like an idiot in the parking lot on my last day of vacation.

Anyway, I hit the road and head to Huntington Beach to enjoy the end of the day. A little sunset on the beach will do me good.

I’m not the only one enjoying the sunset! 😉

Once night falls, I start wondering what to do with my mountain bike. Then suddenly, I remember Jophen Stein, the painter I met two days ago, who thought the idea of giving away my bike was really nice. I don’t think twice—I head back to Riverside, straight to Jeff Soto’s studio. Painters often work late, so I might still catch someone there!

About an hour and a half, maybe two hours later, I’m in front of the studio. I see lights on, knock on the door, and hear loud music blasting from the workshop! The door’s open… well, here goes! I walk in.

“Anyone here?” I see a huge guy come out, with shoulders like a wrestler! It’s Jason Gallo, a friend of Jeff Soto’s, a tattoo artist and painter. Super friendly, I tell him my story, explain that I wanted to give my mountain bike to Jophen if he was okay with it. The guy thinks it’s really cool. So, I take the bike out of my Jeep and leave it right in the middle of the studio!

End of the mountain bike adventure! Jason Gallo walks me back to my car, thanks me, we take a quick souvenir photo, and off I go.

Tomorrow’s the return trip… Sniff 😕

Friday, November 22:

And just like that, the vacation is over! Ughhh! 🙁

Before catching my flight, I make a detour through Downtown LA where I really wanted to shoot a little time-lapse sequence. I set up on a bridge with a pretty nice view! I drive around Downtown a bit. At one point, I walk into a place looking for viewpoints, and a security guard eyes all my camera gear. I ask him if there’s anything worth seeing inside, and he replies, "Yeah, the cathedral!" Haha, I was just 5 meters away from a huge cathedral and didn’t even notice—too busy searching for a viewpoint over the buildings!

After that, I head to Griffith Observatory. These are my last moments before heading to the airport…

A coyote comes up to say goodbye…

These last few minutes will be precious! Off to the airport—I drop off my rental car. The guy at the agency laughs and says, "Oh! Too many miles!"

What I’ll remember most about this trip is a huge breath of fresh air! Traveling alone? Yeah, it’s totally doable—and even really fun! I covered thousands of kilometers, and aside from a few moments (mostly in big cities), I never really felt lonely.

It was an amazing adventure! 😉

Hey, 🙂

Great ending shots at Huntington Beach! Not cool, that student. Hope they’re on VF and recognize themselves. 😛

Quick note on flights with short layovers: Comparison sites don’t make up info—they just pass along what the airlines provide. The issue might come up with multi-leg trips on different airlines without partnerships, but that’s pretty rare. I had a 50-minute layover in Amsterdam last week before a flight to Boston. That flight was listed on Opodo, Bookers, and Air France. I booked it through Air France, usually sticking to airline websites (KLM then Delta, and AF for the return). I’ve booked twice on Opodo (saved 200 €/person) and got a United confirmation right away to manage the trip on their site.

40 minutes in Chicago? Had that in 2012—no problem. The departure gate was right across from the arrival gate, just 10 meters away. Last November, we had a 1h40 layover, but the first flight was 3 hours late, so we missed it. 😐 But since the second flight had to turn around halfway, we caught up with it.

🙂

Hi Olivier, What a nice surprise to receive your kind email—it’s true, time flies so fast! Yes, we did leave on May 13th and returned on June 17th after this amazing trip. It was our first time in the United States (except for a week in NY), and we were completely charmed by all the beauty—so much that I have to say *beauties*, because there was beauty in the places, the vast landscapes, the colors... there’s just so much to say. We met such friendly, helpful, kind, polite, and courteous people—what a change! We really appreciated the relaxed, rule-respecting driving, with no rudeness on the road, even though we drove over 8,200 km in a (black) Jeep Compass rented from Alamo, with 711 miles on the odometer—pure bliss. After arriving in Phoenix with a layover in Atlanta (watch out for short layovers—the administrative formalities can be long and stressful), our route took us (maybe not in order, I need to sort through it) along the Apache Trail, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley (with a special mention for Valley of the Gods), Goosenecks Park, Island in the Sky, Page, Moab, Arches, Yellowstone, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Valley of the Fire (awesome), Las Vegas, Death Valley (already 117°F at 11 AM!), part of Yosemite, Bodie, Mammoth Lake, San Francisco, Muir Woods, and then a 3-day drive down the Pacific Coast, with a special stop at the Monterey Aquarium, before flying out of Los Angeles, which we didn’t have time to visit. Maybe next time. We walked a lot in the heat, but it was worth it for everything we saw. The cherry on top, in our eyes, was spending a day at White Pocket—with the local outfitter, it felt like we were on the moon or another planet (didn’t have time to register for the Wave). Our personal ranking: Yellowstone, White Pocket, Bryce Canyon... We realized just how vast all the states we visited were, and how many places there are to see—it makes sense why some people go back again and again. When you love it... We’ll see what our next project is. In any case, all I can say is: you have to go. Pure happiness.

Here’s a quick recap—if anyone needs more details, I’m happy to answer. It’s great to find answers to your questions on the forum, and there are plenty! Wishing you all the best, and lots of projects and wonderful travels ahead. I reread your story and I’m attaching a photo that might make you smile. (It’s in the wrong place, oh well...) Josiane

Hi Josiane,

What an adventure! It’s been over a month already! 😛 Well done. Maybe if you find the energy, you could share a bit by writing a short story with a few photos... 😉 I know it’s a lot of work, but in the end, it leaves you with a great written memory. We tend to forget certain details just a few months later.

I love long road trips! Yours must’ve been amazing!

Yes, I recognize that mural—it caught my eye too 😉 You realize San Francisco isn’t *that* big a city when you end up passing the same spots over and over while wandering from street to street 😎 I think I’ve crisscrossed SFO in every direction after three stays. I still love this city just as much!

I’d love to hit the road again! ... This year, money’s been tight, but I’m not giving up 😉 I already know I’ve got to be at Megacon in Orlando next April for an expo. That helps keep me going! 😉 And who knows, maybe I’ll have already taken a nice little trip by then.

I think ever since I discovered travel, there hasn’t been a single day in my life without this urge to leave! Heh heh 😛😉

Good evening, In June I had a Jeep Cherokee 4x4—there’s room in the back to sleep two, and with the seats folded down it makes a perfect flat surface. I bought a foam mattress topper at a Walmart. I do wild camping and try to be as discreet as possible. You can sleep in Walmart parking lots. I avoid sleeping inside National Parks. At Yosemite Village, rangers hunt down people sleeping in their cars at night and make them leave. Otherwise, I also sleep in isolated spots right in the middle of the desert. I’ve almost never had any problems, except two or three times when I was woken up by police patrols just to check if I was okay—they were actually pretty nice. Last year, I slept next to White Sands Dunes. When I arrived, the park was closed, so I found a spot 4 km further north near a pond. At 5 a.m., five heavily armed military personnel woke me up and asked what I was doing there. I was near a military base that launches drones, so they checked my papers and wished me a good rest of the night. Sure enough, starting at 6 a.m., drones took off every five minutes. Otherwise, there are campgrounds like the one next to Coral Pink Sand Dunes for $5 a night. Or on the trail to The Wave, there’s a free campground with eight sites, including tables and BBQs. There’s no water, though—I always carry five gallons with me. For food, I have a stove that cost $17, with large refill canisters that last almost three weeks. In 23 years, I’ve hit two large deer, and each time the car was totaled. In June, it happened again during the last week near Bryce Canyon. They gave me a big Chevrolet Tahoe as a replacement—much less comfortable than the Jeep and way thirstier on gas. This year, I plan to buy a bike—the same one as yours costs $99 at Walmart. Like you, I love stopping to enjoy the scenery, and I can stay in the same spot for hours. We see things the same way. That said, hiking alone is really risky—I’ve had a few scares on several occasions. I’ll send you my number in private. Three weeks of vacation, all included, cost me around 1500 € / 1800 € max, and I spend two nights in a hotel in Las Vegas. Car rentals have gone up a lot this year—$26.51/day for an SUV with Alamo in June was about 23 €, but in September there were some great flight deals with short layovers.

Totally agree with you! The extreme wealth, the wastefulness next to poverty—once again, it’s better to be rich and healthy than poor and sick! Visiting Las Vegas is like a pilgrimage to... you’ve just gotta do it once in your life! Hi there, Like you, I’m a lover of the American West, and I’ve never done a trip report on VF—but I should! I’ve never dared to go without booking anything, which would be the dream, but if everything’s planned, I promise both my wife and myself that we’ll stay cool and stop with the click-click photos. Your itinerary is really cool, but honestly, you covered a lot of miles—though it’s hard to do otherwise when you want to see so many places. (Not a criticism.) So many great memories are coming back: Moab and that delicate Arch, Lower Antelope Canyon where I took the photographers’ tour and the slot canyon was nice and clear, SF and biking across the Golden Gate, Horseshoe Bend, the Grand Canyon, and The Wave—I’ll stop there… Even though I was well-equipped with photo gear, I’ve never tried a time-lapse. On my last road trip in September 2024, I clocked exactly 10,070 km. 😏 I love driving for hours in the USA. I get that it’s not always easy to leave without booking. I travel outside of peak seasons, so I could stay anywhere without an issue. Nowadays, I camp in the car more and more—I’m loving it. 😉

Almost time to leave… 😉

Well, I thought with my six trips of nearly a month each that I was in the heavyweight category for visiting the western USA, and my ego took a hit when I saw some REAL heavyweights After visiting Antelope Canyon in good conditions, I was wondering which one to add to my itinerary, knowing that my wife isn’t technical at all and I need to avoid the ones that are too difficult. I've done nearly 17 road trips—I’ve honestly lost count by now 😏

A few alternatives to Antelope Canyon:

1) Red Canyon, also called Peekaboo Canyon in Kanab. The road is impassable without a 4x4, though. There are plenty of tour operators around that offer visits.

2) Peek-a-Boo on Hole in the Rock Road near Escalante. For me, this is the most interesting of the slot canyons:

There’s a series of three successive canyons—really interesting. I’d recommend it. The road is easily doable in an SUV, and then there’s a short, easy walk to the site.

3) Otherwise, near Buckskin Gulch—very different and majestic. There’s a narrow passage similar to Antelope (Wire Pass) and then a breathtaking slot canyon:

The House Valley Rock Road (I don’t remember the exact name) is doable in an SUV unless it’s raining.

There are others... like Waterhole Canyon... But this one has become a huge business that isn’t worth the price. I went in 2017—it was $10, and you could explore freely. Now it’s $50 with a mandatory guide, and it’s nowhere near as impressive as Antelope for the cost.

But the first three are probably the most interesting in my opinion.

Thanks so much! I knew about them, but there’s nothing like first-hand experience.

Hi Olive 🙂 It’s not cool to make grandmas cry first thing in the morning. Your time-lapse is breathtaking!!!! A lover of wide-open spaces can’t watch it without shedding a little tear!!! As for your travel journal, I devoured it!! I loved your writing and your stunning photos. I recognized places I’ve visited with so much pleasure and discovered others I’ll be seeing on my road trip this September. Some showed the sad disappearance and degradation of certain spots, especially on Route 66 (one of the Twin Arrow signs has completely vanished). We also noticed a huge difference between the Las Vegas we visited in 2017 and the one in 2023, especially on Fremont Street, where we found entire families selling their handmade crafts in the spots where costumed people used to wait for tourists to take photos—never mind the devastation of the "zombie drug" epidemic. Those sights really stay with you!!! A little happy note to finish: the poetry of the photo of that little girl flying to the moon with her stuffed animal. I’d love to see the others on your blog, but I only have your first name (could you please send me the link in a PM?). Thanks so much for your work, and have a great afternoon! Marcalamar 🙂

This is such a nice message! 😉 I spent hours taking photos for this little time-lapse. It’s nothing but good memories. Yeah, it’s sad to see some places deteriorate. Americans aren’t really into preservation—they’re more about the money. So, for Twin Arrows, for example, I don’t get why the Navajo Resort right next door, which even calls itself "Twin Arrows," doesn’t think to restore it all... It’s a side of America I’ll never understand.

I’ve come to hate Las Vegas, which I knew 35 years ago. Maybe it’s because I’ve gotten older, but I’ve watched this city go downhill... Paradoxically, the more the city modernizes, the more it seems to degrade in my eyes.

Nowadays, I’ve completely changed my travel style. Most of the time, I go where there’s no one, sleep in my car... minimalist mode 😎

I’ll send you a DM
