A super classic trio: Praslin, La Digue, Mahé (Seychelles)

Since no travel journal has been posted about this destination since 2020, I’m giving it a go—maybe it’ll jog some memories for a few of you or give others a few ideas... even if, in the end, there isn’t much to tell 😎! Even though the itinerary was as classic as can be, it still led to a few brain knots: in what order? How many nights on each island? Rent a car or not? In short, plenty of existential questions to land on 4 nights per island, finishing with Mahé to avoid any nasty surprises before the return flight.

Saturday 03/22: Flight to Mahé with Qatar Airways (no—or rather, no more—direct flights from Paris 😕) A nice surprise at CDG with the discovery of a new lounge in Terminal 1

Then, an in-depth exploration of Doha Airport thanks to (or because of) a loooong layover:

And finally, arrival at the tiny Mahé airport where we step onto the tarmac feeling like we’ve walked into a steam room

Baggage claim is quick, the shuttle to the port is on time, the ferry is punctual (we, on the other hand, are *very* early for it ), and there’s Praslin in sight:

... with a sneak peek of the sea’s colors 🙂 Quick note on the photos: most were taken with a smartphone, and the colors are a bit more saturated than in real life (I did bring my hybrid camera, but in the end, I barely used it since it wasn’t very practical to lug around on the water or for snorkeling).

We pick up the car (a Grand i10 instead of a Picanto) from a muddy parking lot (it just rained) and off we go—of course, with a windshield wiper instead of the turn signal 😎, left-hand driving obliges. In just a few minutes, we arrive at our accommodation for these 4 nights on Praslin (Oh, and now the "lien" tab isn’t working! ) We’re blown away by the view from the terrace:

Then by the view from the little shared terrace on a promontory:

Before heading to test the water temperature on the other side of the road, at Anse Boudin, and spotting our first fish.

I’ve already been sold on the Seychelles elsewhere, but I just can’t make up my mind—I’m not really into beaches or diving. We’ll see if Muriel can change my mind 😅 Anyway, even with a smartphone, I *love* terraces! What do you drink for apéro in the Seychelles?

PS: It’s been ages since I’ve been to CDG—it’s really changed, hasn’t it!

Hello Muriel, I’m following in your footsteps on the Seychelles islands, which are bringing back some wonderful memories 🙂

I'm tempted by the Seychelles for a little relaxing getaway. But I have a feeling it's not exactly cheap... Am I wrong?

I’m not big on beaches or diving either, but I really loved our trip. The Seychelles’ idyllic landscapes are still amazing 😉 ... You’ve got to go as a couple, strolling hand in hand along the beautiful beaches...

Oh wow, amazing 🤪

You know I’ll be a loyal reader of this travel journal ;)

@Attila There are two of us :) But I’ve started looking at hotel prices on the beach (a whim: stepping out of my room and taking just a few steps in the sand to go for a swim). It seems the average is around 500 € per night—that’s the price to pay

Why??? You’re too old for this now!

Me neither, Bruno—I’m not much of a beach person, except for 2-3 days at the end of the trip just to chill and do almost nothing. But hey, we did a few hikes (fewer than planned, I’ll get back to that) and if you love snorkeling, you’re in for a treat. I don’t regret my trip at all, but I don’t think I’ll go back.

As for the apéros, sorry to disappoint, but we’re nowhere near Agnès’ travel journals 😏. No local specialties (they do make beer, but I’m not a fan) and cocktails at 15-16 €—well, that’s not an everyday thing 😕

I hope so, Isabelle... even if some beaches have no doubt shrunk (rising sea levels, what can you do 🏴‍☠️) and La Digue has probably lost some of its charm (its soul?)

If I were a fortune teller, I’d say this whim might happen soon ;)

it seems like an average of 500 € per night would be the price to pay 🤪

That’ll quickly cool me down this travel journal …

As for the aperitifs, sorry to disappoint you, but we're far from Agnès' travel journals 😏 No specialties (they do make beer, but I don't like it) and cocktails at 15-16 €, well, that's not an everyday thing 😕

This isn't starting well at all 😄

Okay, I’ll stop being grumpy, I’ll read in silence. Without any preconceptions.

As the price of cocktails suggests, the rest follows suit, at least when it comes to food. Prices in small supermarkets are about the same as back home (though not the salaries of Seychellois locals 🤪), with a limited selection (but since there are often several shops within a very small radius, you always end up finding something to eat 😏). Restaurants are generally (very) expensive (40 € to 60 € for a main dish). We still found some nice, well-located accommodations for around 100 € per night (but just the accommodation itself, not with our feet in the sand, Kate 😉). All in all, it cost us about 2000 € for 12 days there, and we didn’t feel like we were depriving ourselves (except for the aperitifs 😏).
MU Muriel18 Globetrotter ·
Yes Catherine, I hope this travel journal will give you some info and ideas about what there is to do (or not to do—I’ll admit that just admiring the colors of the water is enough for my happiness... for a while)

No matter what anyone says, it's hard to get tired of travel journals about the Seychelles. In advance, I’m really grateful for what you’re about to show us. Given how prices have evolved just in France, I’m not surprised by the budget needed. Actually, those who usually take 3-week to month-long trips can easily spend the same budget for a 1- to 2-week stay on these islands. And let’s be honest, it’s never been a budget-friendly destination. Maybe something to do as young lovers, if you can afford it... The kind of trip we love but probably won’t return to, I think.
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
In total, it cost us around 2000 € for 12 days on-site

Our trip to Thailand cost us almost the same for a few more days. Yet we didn’t pay much except for the flight. I guess you found a rock-bottom flight ticket?
MU Muriel18 Globetrotter ·
We paid around 760 € for the flight on Iberia’s site, while the same flight was about 250 € more expensive on Qatar’s site... go figure! On the other hand, we had a 10-hour layover in Doha on the way there 😕 but honestly, apart from the lack of sleep, it went by faster than I expected. A shorter layover would’ve cost another 200 or 300 €. Flight hunting is really the part of trip planning I like the least!

Welcome Joël Will this bring back good memories for you too?

Well, there you go, Joel wrapped up the game in one message: I ain't young 🏴‍☠️. Anyway, as Geluk would say, I've been young longer than the others.
