So where are they and what are they doing?

Okay, did you actually read what I heard?

Yeah, I read it, thanks—I’m not some old fogey either 😉
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
If we take a look at the logged-in members, we can see there are quite a few returnees and old-timers coming back. Good to see—it adds life to the forum, and it was inevitable anyway.
MA Mathews Globetrotter ·
why don’t these people chime in on the forum? Some users start threads, we reply, and then they vanish into thin air
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
Some people chime in, some post travel journals. Some, it’s true, seem a bit shy. Well, I don’t have time to do a serious study on this, y’know...
MA Mathews Globetrotter ·
Members who play shy are like old couples who have nothing left to say in the face of life’s pointlessness. 😛 😛 But traveling *always* sparks memories, emotions, tough moments, and moments of happiness.

Does it still take time for some to discover the site or learn that it's active again?

I just found out today by chance (while cleaning up my "favorites" links) that the site is active again. If there was a message about it, it must have ended up in my spam folder.

Where have the old-timers from the site gone, and what are they doing with their time now?

Some of us, including me, are still working! The time I used to spend chatting on VF has easily been filled by other collaborative activities.

Hey, even hidden behind usernames, the new generations are total scaredy-cats and afraid of being "found out." And since most travelers go through agencies or all-inclusive deals, what do you expect them to say besides "I chilled, I visited this country, I was there and here’s my selfie to prove it"? "Chilling" being the trendy word for "doing nothing." The braver ones might admit, "I got ripped off" 😂

Actually, seeing the number of visitors online and the number of participants, I can’t help but think that individualism and selfishness have taken yet another step forward.

People just take what they can, without communicating or giving back.
TI Ticapi Globetrotter ·
Yeah, that’s today’s society for you. 😕

Hi Jojoone, I don’t think it’s due to bad intentions from the participants. The reason is actually pretty simple: if you check the "stay logged in" box on this forum, as soon as you start your internet browser, you’re automatically logged in. That explains it!
DJ Djalma Globetrotter ·
Just because people are logged in doesn’t mean they’re active on VF. As soon as you leave the site, you’re no longer "Online".
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
That wasn’t really the point. What I mean is that the site is getting busy again, but with less lively sections.

On one hand, because there are half as many active contributors due to the other forum, but mostly because a lot of people just come to gather info without participating at all. More than before, anyway.
MA Mathews Globetrotter ·
That wasn’t the point.

Hey Oh, I misunderstood your message then...

For one thing, because there are half as many big participants due to the other forum

I pretty much only check the forum I’m posting on right now. You’ve got to see that the forum for well-known publications—like the one with the backpacker on the cover—is, let’s just say, poorly structured, to put it politely. Anyway, have you heard any news about that Japan and Paris specialist I had some pretty heated exchanges with in the past? Since the question of this thread is "what happened to them?"
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Kujila?
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
I’m waiting for them under the username Jesaismieuxquetoi 😉

It’s the same in real life. I often talk to strangers who are surprised when someone speaks to them . Soon I’m gonna try barking , hoping I won’t just get the dogs’ attention 😂
MA Mathews Globetrotter ·
hi Jojoone, what are they up to and what do they do? There’s someone who created a profile apparently living in the flat country and offering personal escort services in the discussion thread about the Manicouagan Reservoir in Quebec. I don’t really see the connection between these two things...🙂 but this saying comes to mind: it’s better to be poorly or well accompanied than to be alone 😉
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
There’s definitely a huge reservoir 😉 Oh my goodness, forgive me—I’ve sinned again! !
MA Mathews Globetrotter ·
haha well said, though it's like in Mission Impossible—this message will self-destruct
JO Jojoone1 Globetrotter ·
The person is persistent: this isn’t the first username they’ve used to do this.
