Je vais partir en stage dans un laboratoire de recherche à Stanford pour 5 mois à partir de la mi avril. Là-bas, ils me disent de postuler pour un visa de touristes d'affaire (B1) puisque la durée est inférieure à 6 mois. Est-ce que ce type de visa convient à ma situation ? J'avais lu que je ne pouvais pas être payé avec un tel visa mais à Stanford, ils m'ont dit que je n'allais pas être payé avec un salaire mais que j'allais recevoir une sorte d'indemnité de déplacement (pour le logement, la bouffe, ...). J'aimerais donc avoir confirmation que ça ne pose pas de problème.
L'an dernier, j'étais à UCLA (Los Angeles) pour 4 mois et j'avais pris un visa J-1 qui est le visa recommandé pour les stages. Donc je me demande si je ferais pas mieux d'insister auprès de Stanford pour avoir ce visa là même si c'est plus long. En même temps si un B1 suffit, il vaut mieux aller au plus simple, c'est moins cher pour eux et pour moi aussi.
Une autre question, est-il possible d'ouvrir un compte aux USA et d'avoir un numéro de sécurité social avec un visa B1 ? Je sais qu'avec un J1 c'est possible.
pour faire un stage (meme non remunere) c'est le visa J1 qu'il faut; apres c'est a toi de voir avec ton employeur, et avec 'tes principes'.

Pour un stage, légalement, il faut un J1.
Mais en général ils n'en délivrent qu'un seul. Par exemple un seul J1 pour aller en fac, puis éventuellement un seul J1 pour aller faire un stage. Mais 2 J1 pour deux années de fac, là je crois que c'est impossible. Donc attention par rapport à ton expérience précédente.
Quant à l'ouverture d'un compte, J1 ok, B1 pas ok !

En fait voilà, je suis étudiante en master 1 et je souhaiterai faire un stage aux etats-unis pour au moins 3mois. Mais le souci est que j'ai un visa touristique (de 10 ans).
Au départ j'ai pensé à aller sur place et chercher le stage directement étant donné que le visa me permet de séjourner au moins 6mois. Mais à ce qu'il parait il faudrait un visa J-1.
Que faut-il faire dans ce cas ? les procédures d'obtention de visa par exemple faudrait-il prouver d'avoir une promesse de stage ?...

Un simple copié-coller d'une réponse à un MP:
"Pour mon premier stage, je suis parti avec un J1 et je n'ai eu aucun soucis. Pour le second, je suis parti avec un B1 et ça a été un peu plus difficile pour l'avoir. En fait, quand je suis allé à l'ambassade, ils m'ont refusé le visa en protestant que je devais me procurer un visa J1 et donc le DS2019. Pour eux, le visa B1 ne correspondait pas à ma situation. J'ai été obligé d'insister lourdement par l'intermédiaire de l'université de Stanford pour finalement débloquer la situation à l'ambassade et obtenir le visa B1. Ca a été très très chaud et j'ai reçu mon visa seulement quelques jours avant mon départ (en gros le visa est arrivé le mercredi pour un départ le dimanche). Après, je pense que ça dépend beaucoup de la personne sur qui tu tombes à l'ambassade. Pour moi, c'était impossible de discuter. J'ai également vu d'autres personnes en stage qui étaient venu avec un visa B1 et pour la plupart, il n'y a pas eu de soucis (mais c'était l'ambassade d'un autre pays). C'est au bonheur la chance."
Concernant l'ouverture d'un compte avec un Visa B-1, ce n'est pas un soucis (en tout cas à Bank of America)! A prioro, même en touriste on peut ouvrir un compte !
Et pour finir, j'ai trouvé ces stages en me baladant sur les sites des laboratoires qui m'intéressaient. J'ai eu beaucoup de mal à trouver le premier à UCLA. Pour le second, ça a été beaucoup plus vite mais j'imagine qu'avoir UCLA sur le cv a été d'une grande aide.
