Bonjour,
Nous venons d'effectuer à vélo la traversée du désert entre Aktau, au Kazakhstan, et Kungrad, en Ouzbekistan. Voici quelques infos a partager (il semble qu'elles soient trop rares !) :
Aktau-Beyneu : environ 500 km. Parcourus en 7 jours.
Beyneu-Kungrad : environ 450 km. Parcourus en 5 jours.
En partant d'Aktau, les 200 premiers km sont asphaltés. Après la frontière ouzbek, c'est également asphalté. Entre les deux : plus de 350 km de piste. Et parfois de la piste en très très mauvais état. Il vaut mieux de temps en temps prendre l'une des petites pistes parallèles à la "route" principale parfois vraiment trop cahotique.
D'Aktau à la frontière ouzbek (presque 600 km), on trouve, entre les villages, des tchaikhanas (petite gargottes servant à boire et à manger) tous les 50 ou 60 km. Cela permet de pouvoir se réapprovisionner en eau tous les jours, et de pouvoir manger un plat tout prêt chaque jour (pour info : 2 plats + 1 bouteilles de Fanta = 10.000 T, soit environ 5€). Généralement, on peut aussi y faire la sieste et y rester autant de temps que l'on veut, en attendant que le soleil soit un peu moinc chaud.
De la frontière ouzbek à Kungrad, c'est très différent : il n'y a rien entre les villages, et ceux-ci sont très espacés (100, parfois 120 km). Il faut donc prévoir assez d'eau pour deux jours, ou au moins un jour et demi selon votre rythme. Dans ces villages, il n'y a pas toujours de tchaikhanas, parfois seulement des petits magasins. Il vaut donc mieux prévoir un déjeuner.
A mi-chemin, il y a Beyneu. Nous avons été à l'hotel "Adan" (ou un nom approchant, desolée pour le manque de précision !). Notre chambre était grande, propre, nous avions clim et sdb privée pour 7500 T la nuit (9000 T avant ristourne). Pres de la gare, il doit y avoir un hotel moins cher, ou vous pouvez négocier un prix interessant si vous restez seulement 12 heures.
A Beyneu, vous pouvez trouver des DAB, un cybercafé et des petits restos (près de la gare), ainsi qu'un "supermarché" un peu plus fourni que les petites boutiques habituelles.
Dans le desert, on a campé tous les soirs "à vue". C'est tellement plat qu'il n'y a pas une seule petite montagne derrière laquelle se cacher (sauf au tout début, après Aktau). Cela dit, personne n'est jamais venu nous dire quoi que ce soit. Nous avons vu des petits scorpions, une belle tarentule et des serpents. Nous n'avons pas été piqués mais il faut garder les yeux bien ouverts
Nous avons fait cette étape du 6 au 18 juin, en plein été. La température dépassait les 40°C dans l'après-midi.
Lorsque vous arrivez en Ouzbekistan, ayez des dollars dans la poche (à moins que vous n'ayez déjà des sums). Car en plein désert : point de banque ! Nous, nous avons changé des Tengés kazakhs pour des Sums ouzbeks sur le bazar de Beyneu (10 000 T pour 170 000 S).
Le passage de frontière n'a posé aucun problème. La douane ouvrait à 10h.
Voila ! J'espère que ces infos seront utiles à certains. Lorsque nous avons préparé notre voyage, nous n'avons trouvé que très peu d'informations sur le sujet, si ce n'est un conseil : prendre le train ! Or, la route est tout à fait faisable (nous ne sommes pas des cadros du vélo) et l'expérience d'une traversée du désert, certes intense et éprouvante, est assez exhaltante.

The Chinese Far West More than 30 years after my first trip to eastern China, I finally fulfilled an old dream: traveling solo from Beijing to the far west, discovering Xinjiang, the Uyghur people and the oppression they endure, the oases of Turpan and Kashgar, the Taklamakan Desert, the end of the Great Wall... The route was covered by train.

1- JIANKOU Finding the authentic Great Wall, without tourists or a guide Friday, August 24, 2018 Thirty years later, I didn’t feel like revisiting the Great Wall at Badaling or any other overcrowded site. I chose to explore it at Jiankou, in its wildest, most authentic, and unrestored section, starting from a lost village deep in a valley—though it wasn’t *that* lost, since it had everything for communication.

No need to pay for a taxi to get there—by timing it right, you can take the bus for just a few yuan. You have to get off at Xizhazi, the bus terminus. Be careful, there are only two buses a day in each direction. At the Xizhazi bus stop, I met a young couple who’d arrived with zero information about what to expect. We hiked the three of us toward the restored section of Mutianyu.
Still, be cautious With GPS and a topographic map (OpenTopoMap), you can set off without a problem or guide. The trail up to Jiankou is easy and well-marked. The trails down are too. But be careful—once you’re on the Wall, it’s real mountain hiking, with easy but dangerous climbing sections (over sheer drops). Not for amateurs or those afraid of heights! But what a reward. The Wall all to yourself, where it’s at its most daring. Truly mesmerizing.

2- BEIJING The best way to get around the capital Sunday, August 26 The best way to explore the city is still by bike. Most are in a bike-share system, but you need to use an app—WeChat, the app that does everything, like monitoring your every move. No way I was installing that.

I found one at a rental shop near the hostel. The key is to quickly learn local traffic customs to minimize risks. Bike lanes are wide along the avenues.
But you still have to: - Watch out for anything parked on the bike paths—the most annoying are people napping or talking on the phone in their cars - Keep an eye on everything coming the wrong way—the list is long - The worst is right turns on red, which in Chinese traffic rules seem to have priority Once you get the hang of it, it’s fine. The city is huge but flat, so you can just wing it.
3- BEIJING By train to the far west Sunday, August 26 Beijing West Station is the size and operates like an airport. With your e-ticket from the agency, you first have to pick up your ticket at the special "English" counter, after passing through security. With your ticket in hand, you have to exit and enter through the boarding waiting area—not the platform—after a second security check.
Then you find the right hall and wait for the sign to finally access the platform. In the end, it works pretty well given the incredible number of passengers to manage. Everywhere in Beijing, I saw that the Chinese have mastered crowd flow management.
Nice surprise: second-class carriages are clean, air-conditioned, and bright. Perfect, since I was in for 20 hours. One uniformed attendant per carriage, mobile meal service—luxury! Small downside: no luggage space. Hauling your suitcase up to the top bunk is quite a workout. I was in the middle, so it wasn’t too bad. The landscape, though, whether rural or urban, is pretty bleak. That should change once we leave the eastern plains.
Of course, I got my first police visit, with a thorough passport check and bag search. I was warned—going to the Chinese far west exposes you to this kind of hassle. But they were polite and respectful.

4- JIAYUGUAN Getting by without English Monday, August 27 At the gates of two deserts (Gobi and Taklamakan) and at the foot of the Tibetan highlands, the Great Wall ends at Jiayuguan. Here, I found the deeper China I’d somewhat rediscovered during my bike ride, even if now everyone gets around on electric bikes and I’m no longer stared at like an alien.

Prices are nothing like Beijing: you can find a full meal for 2 €, and my bike cost 7 € for two days. Plus, few people speak English—neither the owner of the HI hostel where I stayed, nor the ticket sellers at the sites, let alone the servers at the small eateries where I ate. Everything is written in Chinese. So I had to use the little Chinese I know to communicate about essentials. It makes the locals laugh to see a European trying to speak their language, but it earns respect. With Google Translate’s help, I managed.
Rant: With their avenues blocked for construction for kilometers without warning, and new roads not yet on maps, I must’ve taken 15 km of detours. More photos...
5- JIAYUGUAN Scams and heritage Tuesday, August 28 The Great Wall doesn’t exactly end at the fort I visited yesterday but 10 km further, at the entrance to a river gorge at the foot of the mountains. All that’s left is a badly damaged tower (more like a mound of earth) and a section of clay wall, similar to the one I biked yesterday.

This morning, I hopped on my bike, determined to venture into the desert to see this highly symbolic site. First, you access it via a wide, brand-new road with not a soul in sight. Just before the site, I came across a grand welcome gate, very period-style, but it’s actually the inevitable toll booth.
Behind the gate, the road continues straight to the site, which you can see in the distance—at least 2 km away—the remains of the tower and wall. I had to leave my bike here. Fine. I went to the ticket counter and asked the price: 120 yuan! I couldn’t believe it—over 15 € for a simple mound of earth.
I showed my displeasure to the attendant, who couldn’t care less, and immediately turned back. 120 yuan—that’s the price for a new road, a fancy gate planted 2 km before the site just to force you to take a shuttle, and employees with nothing to do all day... Now I understand why I didn’t meet anyone!
Heritage China is a bit pricey Generally, sites are expensive for the country’s standard of living, but travelers are supposed to have money, so why hold back? I even gave up on the Forbidden City—reservations required days in advance (or on the black market at an impossible price). I prefer to keep the memory of my first visit, when entry must’ve cost a few dozen cents, and there were only a handful of visitors.
This morning, I took a taxi to see remarkable tombs of common people from the 3rd to 6th centuries. They’re small vaulted caves made of painted bricks, depicting scenes of daily life. Very pretty and moving. But even here, though the price was more reasonable, I was left wanting—only one of the 16 tombs is open to visitors, and it’s apparently not the most beautiful.
The authentic China—at least what’s left of it... Wandering the impersonal avenues of the city, you stumble upon a market. There, you still find traditional China—small shops with questionable hygiene, Go players, musicians, and even a dental prosthetist. The last refuge for those untouched by modernity. More photos...
6- DUNHUANG Abundance in the middle of the desert Wednesday, August 29 Well, I thought the landscape would be less bleak as I headed west. Nope. The only distraction in this expanse of dark, clayey sand is the forests of pylons and wind turbines, plus wild camels racing each other.
However, Dunhuang, the gateway to the Taklamakan, is by far the most pleasant Chinese city I know. There’s a real city center you can explore on foot. It’s hot but not unbearable, with a light, dry breeze. Much nicer than Beijing. The Han Chinese are still the majority, but the Muslim Uyghurs are more numerous, and the muezzin’s call to prayer echoes around the mosque.
The most surprising thing is the abundance and diversity of fruits and vegetables. You wonder how it all grows here. Well-irrigated, the desert sands are very fertile. Here, raisins have subtle, mysterious flavors, and the lamb really tastes like lamb.

7- TURPAN The Uyghurs under heavy surveillance Friday, August 31 Surveillance cameras everywhere in the city, armed police stationed at intersections, in front of public buildings, at the entrance and inside tourist sites, police stations on every corner, patrols on foot or by car, khaki uniforms even for middle schoolers... here, the Han Chinese are in the minority, and you can feel it. Turpan feels like a city under siege.

To enter the youth hostel where I stayed, there’s even a security gate, and the receptionist (a Han, like everyone in tourism) wears a bulletproof vest! Reassuring. Still, you don’t feel particularly threatened here, especially as a European. The troublemakers are the Chinese, not the Uyghurs. Generally, China is a very safe country for visitors.
Smile, you’re on camera! I was biking on an avenue when the car in front of me got flashed for driving slowly. I quickly understood why when I got flashed too.
Here, the official time is Beijing time, but it gets dark two hours later. It’ll be even worse in Kashgar. Trickier to manage: everything is displayed in Chinese and Arabic. Nothing in English. Choosing a menu is a shot in the dark. Apart from a few young Chinese, no one here speaks English, and my Chinese doesn’t seem very understandable...
Mogao, the end of the road for the Han Yesterday, near Dunhuang, I went to Mogao, a complex of decorated caves with Buddha sculptures and paintings. Stunning, but so crowded! Luckily, here in Turpan, Chinese tourists barely venture out. So I visited a Silk Road ghost town with only a handful of other visitors and under a howling wind.
The modern Chinese city is swallowing up the old Uyghur neighborhoods—only a museum-like district remains in the center, and pockets of resistance on the outskirts are doomed to disappear soon. More photos...
8- KASHGAR A (relative) love at first sight for the old city Sunday, September 2 After three overnight trains, here I am in the far west of China, nearly 4,000 km from the capital. Despite the omnipresent police and an old city preserved UNESCO-style, Kashgar is my Chinese love at first sight.

Finally, Chinese... well, sort of, because we’re in Uyghur territory here—a Turkic people with nothing culturally in common with the Han, the eastern Chinese. It started badly yesterday at Turfan station, where after three security gate passes, at least five passport checks, and a bag search, three adorable policewomen confiscated my antibacterial lotion because it had a flammable logo...
Then came the welcoming committee of armed cops at Kashgar station. Once all that was over, they left me alone—except you still have to go through security checks like everyone else to enter the old city, the bazaar, the livestock market... The further west you go, the more the siege mentality is evident. Luckily, the border isn’t far...
Despite the inevitable destruction-reconstruction, the city center has been well preserved. Thankfully, because it’s a very original style, a mix of local and colonial. I love it, even if it’s a bit too artificial, sanitized, and watered-down, and rather empty of residents. On the Silk Road, the city was famous for its great food. And it still is—rarely have I seen such richness and abundance of food! And not just scorpions or snakes. More photos...
9- KASHGAR China’s recipe for controlling the populace Saturday, September 1 Xinjiang, along with Tibet, is a "sensitive" area of rebellion in the eyes of Chinese authorities. As a result, the state has these regions and their populations under total control. Tourists also feel the consequences, even if they’re not at risk of re-education camps.
- Putting barbed wire and anti-ramming barriers around sensitive sites (schools, big hotels, government buildings...)
- Installing traffic surveillance gates with cameras and photo flashes (for all vehicles passing, including bikes) throughout the city and even in the countryside
- Posting uniformed guards with tasers, batons, or huge baseball bats every 100 meters
- Training the Han population (ethnic Chinese) in self-defense with sticks, preferably in the morning on the street. Men and women of all ages
- Starting school with the national anthem, doing military exercises, and receiving political indoctrination, all neatly lined up in the courtyard. (The dream school for any teacher)
- Placing a snitch in uniform (a pseudo-guard) in public gathering places, like youth hostels. Mine spends the day loafing around the courtyard
- Putting Chinese flags everywhere on the streets to remind everyone who’s in charge
- Installing security gates at every entrance to areas frequented by tourists (thanks for that) but not just there
- Never photographing cops, or else! I tried, but it’s not easy...
With all that, you can stroll around safely Not much crime! As for the amount the Chinese state spends to maintain such a system, it’s staggering! A third of the Han living in Xinjiang work in security. Today, I wandered freely around old Kashgar, which is quite large after all. More photos...
10- TASHKURGAN What on earth was I thinking going there! Wednesday, September 5 First, there’s the taxi—pretty crappy, with a driver who doesn’t speak a word of English and won’t stop smoking. Over six hours in that... shared with a completely out-of-it American.

Then there are all the checkpoints along the way. I won’t go on—you know the drill by now.
After that, there’s Tashkurgan—a town with nothing to see, nothing to do. Deserted as soon as night falls. There’s this huge youth hostel and a few lost Chinese tapping away on their smartphones, chain-smoking. This lost American-European crowd, swapping tips on how to enter Pakistan or Tajikistan.
Luckily, there’s the Chinese Pamir Highway, lined with peaks over 7,000m. There’s the feeling of no longer being in China, with a population whose features are Middle Eastern. And these Tajik women with their stunning hairstyles and vibrant costumes. There’s the fact of having reached the westernmost Chinese city, far from crowds and tourist sites. 11- KYRGYZ BORDER A surreal epic Thursday, September 6 The road from Kashgar to the Kyrgyzstan border is a little over 200 km and passes through beautiful landscapes of colorful, desert-like mountains with acrobatic folds. That’s the bucolic part of the trip.
Yesterday, I managed to gather four people to rent a minibus to reach the border more easily: a Spaniard and an Argentine I’d already met in Turpan, and two New Zealanders who responded to the ad left at the hostel.
Absurdity and paranoia of Chinese authorities The highlight was crossing the town of Wuqia, 50 km past Kashgar. After tallying up with my fellow sufferers, we must’ve passed about ten checkpoints with: - Passport checks: 14 times, sometimes by two cops side by side - Bag checks: 4 times - Smartphone checks: 2 times, with deletion of "non-compliant" photos, and registration of your IMEI in the exit log!... Absurd and surreal at the same time, since my camera stayed in my bag, my apps are in French, and my photos have been online for ages...
With all that, we arrived just as the last checkpoint before the no man’s land marking the border between the two countries was on lunch break. And bam! Another 1.5-hour wait, alongside truckers who were much more used to this than we were.
What to think? The cops themselves aren’t fooled. They play the role they’re asked to, but sometimes you can coax a smile out of them—they realize how ridiculous the situation is.
What’s the point? That’s the big question my companions and I were tempted to answer with "to piss people off." To show you your place isn’t here, but with the other tourists, over there in the east, in Shanghai, Xi’an, or Guangzhou.
As for you, a traveler from a democratic country, you really experience this as aggression, humiliation, a violation of your private space. And yet, I’m respected, they speak to me properly. Today, I better understand what a Palestinian or a citizen of an occupied country might feel daily. A unique experience! Thanks, China.
And to top it off, the cherry on the cake! It’s still this glowing button you press to rate your passage after clearing the last obstacle before the exit stamp. I was so surprised it turned off before I could react. The Spaniard, with great humor and irony, had time to vote "excellent." In the end, he wasn’t wrong—you can hardly do better!
PS: I ditched my buddies at the border. They didn’t want to pay for a taxi to continue. So I took a direct taxi to Osh. The first 100 km are fabulous. I couldn’t take many photos, but I’ll be back on Monday to go to Tajikistan.

Very pretty and moving. But even here, though the price was more reasonable, I was left wanting—only one of the 16 tombs is open to visitors, and it’s apparently not the most beautiful.
The authentic China—at least what’s left of it... Wandering the impersonal avenues of the city, you stumble upon a market. There, you still find traditional China—small shops with questionable hygiene, Go players, musicians, and even a dental prosthetist. The last refuge for those untouched by modernity. More photos...
6- DUNHUANG Abundance in the middle of the desert Wednesday, August 29 Well, I thought the landscape would be less bleak as I headed west. Nope. The only distraction in this expanse of dark, clayey sand is the forests of pylons and wind turbines, plus wild camels racing each other.
However, Dunhuang, the gateway to the Taklamakan, is by far the most pleasant Chinese city I know. There’s a real city center you can explore on foot. It’s hot but not unbearable, with a light, dry breeze. Much nicer than Beijing. The Han Chinese are still the majority, but the Muslim Uyghurs are more numerous, and the muezzin’s call to prayer echoes around the mosque.The most surprising thing is the abundance and diversity of fruits and vegetables. You wonder how it all grows here. Well-irrigated, the desert sands are very fertile. Here, raisins have subtle, mysterious flavors, and the lamb really tastes like lamb.

7- TURPAN The Uyghurs under heavy surveillance Friday, August 31 Surveillance cameras everywhere in the city, armed police stationed at intersections, in front of public buildings, at the entrance and inside tourist sites, police stations on every corner, patrols on foot or by car, khaki uniforms even for middle schoolers... here, the Han Chinese are in the minority, and you can feel it. Turpan feels like a city under siege.

To enter the youth hostel where I stayed, there’s even a security gate, and the receptionist (a Han, like everyone in tourism) wears a bulletproof vest! Reassuring. Still, you don’t feel particularly threatened here, especially as a European. The troublemakers are the Chinese, not the Uyghurs. Generally, China is a very safe country for visitors.
Smile, you’re on camera! I was biking on an avenue when the car in front of me got flashed for driving slowly. I quickly understood why when I got flashed too.
Here, the official time is Beijing time, but it gets dark two hours later. It’ll be even worse in Kashgar. Trickier to manage: everything is displayed in Chinese and Arabic. Nothing in English. Choosing a menu is a shot in the dark. Apart from a few young Chinese, no one here speaks English, and my Chinese doesn’t seem very understandable...
Mogao, the end of the road for the Han Yesterday, near Dunhuang, I went to Mogao, a complex of decorated caves with Buddha sculptures and paintings. Stunning, but so crowded! Luckily, here in Turpan, Chinese tourists barely venture out. So I visited a Silk Road ghost town with only a handful of other visitors and under a howling wind.
The modern Chinese city is swallowing up the old Uyghur neighborhoods—only a museum-like district remains in the center, and pockets of resistance on the outskirts are doomed to disappear soon. More photos...
8- KASHGAR A (relative) love at first sight for the old city Sunday, September 2 After three overnight trains, here I am in the far west of China, nearly 4,000 km from the capital. Despite the omnipresent police and an old city preserved UNESCO-style, Kashgar is my Chinese love at first sight.

Finally, Chinese... well, sort of, because we’re in Uyghur territory here—a Turkic people with nothing culturally in common with the Han, the eastern Chinese. It started badly yesterday at Turfan station, where after three security gate passes, at least five passport checks, and a bag search, three adorable policewomen confiscated my antibacterial lotion because it had a flammable logo...
Then came the welcoming committee of armed cops at Kashgar station. Once all that was over, they left me alone—except you still have to go through security checks like everyone else to enter the old city, the bazaar, the livestock market... The further west you go, the more the siege mentality is evident. Luckily, the border isn’t far...
Despite the inevitable destruction-reconstruction, the city center has been well preserved. Thankfully, because it’s a very original style, a mix of local and colonial. I love it, even if it’s a bit too artificial, sanitized, and watered-down, and rather empty of residents. On the Silk Road, the city was famous for its great food. And it still is—rarely have I seen such richness and abundance of food! And not just scorpions or snakes. More photos...
9- KASHGAR China’s recipe for controlling the populace Saturday, September 1 Xinjiang, along with Tibet, is a "sensitive" area of rebellion in the eyes of Chinese authorities. As a result, the state has these regions and their populations under total control. Tourists also feel the consequences, even if they’re not at risk of re-education camps.
- Putting barbed wire and anti-ramming barriers around sensitive sites (schools, big hotels, government buildings...)
- Installing traffic surveillance gates with cameras and photo flashes (for all vehicles passing, including bikes) throughout the city and even in the countryside
- Posting uniformed guards with tasers, batons, or huge baseball bats every 100 meters
- Training the Han population (ethnic Chinese) in self-defense with sticks, preferably in the morning on the street. Men and women of all ages
- Starting school with the national anthem, doing military exercises, and receiving political indoctrination, all neatly lined up in the courtyard. (The dream school for any teacher)
- Placing a snitch in uniform (a pseudo-guard) in public gathering places, like youth hostels. Mine spends the day loafing around the courtyard
- Putting Chinese flags everywhere on the streets to remind everyone who’s in charge
- Installing security gates at every entrance to areas frequented by tourists (thanks for that) but not just there
- Never photographing cops, or else! I tried, but it’s not easy...With all that, you can stroll around safely Not much crime! As for the amount the Chinese state spends to maintain such a system, it’s staggering! A third of the Han living in Xinjiang work in security. 10- TASHKURGAN What on earth was I thinking going there! Wednesday, September 5 First, there’s the taxi—pretty crappy, with a driver who doesn’t speak a word of English and won’t stop smoking. Over six hours in that... shared with a completely out-of-it American.

Then there are all the checkpoints along the way. I won’t go on—you know the drill by now.
After that, there’s Tashkurgan—a town with nothing to see, nothing to do. Deserted as soon as night falls. There’s this huge youth hostel and a few lost Chinese tapping away on their smartphones, chain-smoking. This lost American-European crowd, swapping tips on how to enter Pakistan or Tajikistan.
Luckily, there’s the Chinese Pamir Highway, lined with peaks over 7,000m. There’s the feeling of no longer being in China, with a population whose features are Middle Eastern. And these Tajik women with their stunning hairstyles and vibrant costumes. There’s the fact of having reached the westernmost Chinese city, far from crowds and tourist sites. 11- KYRGYZ BORDER A surreal epic Thursday, September 6 The road from Kashgar to the Kyrgyzstan border is a little over 200 km and passes through beautiful landscapes of colorful, desert-like mountains with acrobatic folds. That’s the bucolic part of the trip.
Yesterday, I managed to gather four people to rent a minibus to reach the border more easily: a Spaniard and an Argentine I’d already met in Turpan, and two New Zealanders who responded to the ad left at the hostel.Absurdity and paranoia of Chinese authorities The highlight was crossing the town of Wuqia, 50 km past Kashgar. After tallying up with my fellow sufferers, we must’ve passed about ten checkpoints with: - Passport checks: 14 times, sometimes by two cops side by side - Bag checks: 4 times - Smartphone checks: 2 times, with deletion of "non-compliant" photos, and registration of your IMEI in the exit log!... Absurd and surreal at the same time, since my camera stayed in my bag, my apps are in French, and my photos have been online for ages...
With all that, we arrived just as the last checkpoint before the no man’s land marking the border between the two countries was on lunch break. And bam! Another 1.5-hour wait, alongside truckers who were much more used to this than we were.
What to think? The cops themselves aren’t fooled. They play the role they’re asked to, but sometimes you can coax a smile out of them—they realize how ridiculous the situation is.
What’s the point? That’s the big question my companions and I were tempted to answer with "to piss people off." To show you your place isn’t here, but with the other tourists, over there in the east, in Shanghai, Xi’an, or Guangzhou.
As for you, a traveler from a democratic country, you really experience this as aggression, humiliation, a violation of your private space. And yet, I’m respected, they speak to me properly. Today, I better understand what a Palestinian or a citizen of an occupied country might feel daily. A unique experience! Thanks, China.
And to top it off, the cherry on the cake! It’s still this glowing button you press to rate your passage after clearing the last obstacle before the exit stamp. I was so surprised it turned off before I could react. The Spaniard, with great humor and irony, had time to vote "excellent." In the end, he wasn’t wrong—you can hardly do better!
PS: I ditched my buddies at the border. They didn’t want to pay for a taxi to continue. So I took a direct taxi to Osh. The first 100 km are fabulous. I couldn’t take many photos, but I’ll be back on Monday to go to Tajikistan.

A Kysyl Oil, vallée de Soussamir, il y a trois randos. Celles que nous avons faites sont : les cascades et la vallée de Chong Su, qui commence derrière le village. Mais attention ne pas suivre le chemin, essayer de récupérer la route. On peut dormir en pension à Kyzyl OIl, il y a un représentant de CBT sur place qui peut aider à donner des infos. Pour repartir de Kyzyl Oil à Bishkek il faut se renseigner, pas forcément évident.

bonjour, je viens de revebnir de l'Ouzbekistan et je dresse un petit bilan
1) Argent- 1$=1063 sums. Meme si vous faites du change dans les hotels et les banques ou les paquets d'argent sont fait en banque il faut verifier le nombre de billets ( c'est la galere car souvent on a les billets de 500 et imaginez si vous changez 50$...)car il peut en manque 1000 ou plus..
au cas ou demandez les certificats de change car ils peuvent etre demandes a votre depart du pays
sachez que echanger les sums en dollars s'il vous en reste trop est difficile..
2) les flics- l'horreur... bon, ayez votre passeport, visa, enregistrement et patience...
ne donnez jamais l'argent au flic pour qu'il verifie combien vous en avez- quand il va compter votre fric et vous le rendre il va vous en manquer...
eviter de montrer que vous avez des dollars ou des euros...
A Tachkent y en a de partout.. a chaque coin.. apres beaucoup moins...
on les repere a leur uniforme verte.
oubliez le metro et surtout ne pas y faire des photos ...
de toute facon un etranger dans le metro est toujours controle..

3) hebergement- le plus sympa c'est des B&B. essayez de reserver par interent. bcp de bonnes adresses dans les guides ( lonely planet ou petit fute)pendant la saison touristique l est difficile de trouver une place qqpart..
4) Bouffe- la qualite du repas est bonne.. les salades a volonte et la viande, bcp de viande.
Quant a la flotte il vaut mieux en acheter- de l'eau potable gazeuses ou plate car meme pour mon estomac kirhiz l'eau ouzbeke n'a pas ete bonne. Si vous allez dans la region de Mouinak il faut prevoir a manger aussi.
Demandez toujours les prix avant de commander car sinon apres vous payez sans savoir pourquoi et c’est alors le serveur qui dicte les prix.. et l’addition peut etre gonflee...
5) Transports- on a souvent prefere le taxi ou le taxi collectif aux bus. Pour l’avion c’ets pas cher et il faut aller a Uzbekistan Airways ( a Tachkent pres de l’ex-hotel Rossiya) qui dessert l’interieur de la Republique. A l’aeroport y a un guichet special qui fonctionne pour les touristes etrangers.
6)Appareils numeriques/internet- facile a trouver si vous cherchez.. pour mon numerique c’etait une trouvaille car j’ai pu faire bcp de photos en vidant regulierement ma petite carte de memoire. Meme a Khiva, dans la cite fortifiee meme y a de l’ ;internet.
7) Visites- A Samarkand tout est trop cher... un bon truc- aller a Registan le dimanche vers le soir quand le caissier n’est pas la et prendre des photos et vister l’interieur gratuitement.
A Khiva- achetez un ticket a l’entree pour pouvoir visiter et prendre les photos ( 8.5$/personne ( avec le droit de faire les photos.) gratuitement apres. Le ticket est normalement delivre pour un jour mais le lendemain vous pouvez venir avec le meme car ils regardent rarement la date...
Bouhara- normalement le prix de la visite d’ARC comprend aussi le service d’un guide francophone.
Ne faites pas toujours confiance aux mecs qui vous proposent de monter les minartes ( comme Bibi khanoum a samarkande) car vous pouvez avoir les problemes avec la ploice et puis c’est pas securisant- a bibi Khanoum il y a des serpents et qqs escaliers manquent...
8) Achats
vaut mieux acheter a Khiva ou a Boukhara. A Samarkand c’est vraiment exagere au niveau des prix. N’hesitez pas a marchander.

We took this trip from September 12 to October 7, 2022. I didn’t post this travel journal earlier in Voyage Forum because the site wasn’t back up yet (and also because I was short on time).
Then, at the end of 2024, I made a promise to a friend: to publish my travel journal on VF. So here it is!
We took off from Paris in the late afternoon on September 12 and arrived in Tashkent around 7:15 AM on the 13th.
This trip was the result of long contemplation and preparation (it was originally planned for the year of the lockdown (2020) and was prepared with the help and advice of Nasrullo Jumanov from Turquoise Travel.

September 13
At the airport exit, we were greeted by the owner of our B&B (B&B Gulnara).
Today was all about recovery and our first steps in the capital. Our first currency exchange made us feel like sudden millionaires.
Our first stroll down the avenue leading to Chorsu Market introduced us to the fact that 80 to 90% of the cars here are white Chevrolets.
A walk under the arcades facing Chorsu: hardware stores, cabinetmakers, lute makers (one of them gave me a little concert/demo of a few string instruments).


As we entered the market, many vendors called out to us, including this florist who asked where we were from: ‘France? Ah! Macron! PSG!’ He then recited a list of players from the Parisian team as well as past (Platini, Zidane, etc.) and current (Giroud, Griezmann, Mbappé, etc.) French national team players. Since we’re more into rugby (we live near Toulouse), he knew more players than I did!
The market sprawls outside around the large circular, multi-story hall. We bought some grapes and bottles of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice for just a few sums. This evening, we had a meet-up with Nasrullo. The reunion was very warm: we’d been exchanging messages for over two years, and I’d been ‘torturing’ him with changes to our itinerary and trip duration. We were finally eager to meet, and honestly, I wasn’t disappointed—in fact, it was the opposite. Nasrullo was very attentive throughout our trip and always made sure, even from a distance (and most often from a distance!), that everything went smoothly. His goal was for us to leave delighted with our trip and, why not, indirectly become ambassadors for this destination. September 14 Breakfast with Nasrullo, then we set off with him by taxi to explore some of the capital’s sites.

We started by visiting the Khazrati Imam complex, which includes the mausoleum of Kaffal Shashi, the Barak Khan and Muyi Muborak madrasas, and the great Khazrati Imam Mosque with its immense prayer hall.


In the Muyi Muborak madrasa, now a museum, you can see the oldest Quran in the world. It was written by three religious scholars, including the secretary of the Prophet Muhammad, on large ‘pages’ made of antelope skin. Next, we explored Soviet-era Tashkent, discovering its parks, canals, and squares: Independence Square with its storks and phoenixes, Amir Temur Square with its large statue and, in the background, the massive Soviet-era hotel that has become one of Tashkent’s iconic buildings. Nasrullo took us through Broadway Boulevard and along what he calls ‘Tashkent’s Montmartre’… Well, it’s far, very far from Montmartre (in every sense of the word!). Then we took the metro to Chorsu station. Rush hour is pretty much the same everywhere in the metro… When we arrived at Chorsu, it was time to say goodbye. Nasrullo had to head back to Samarkand. Before leaving, he recommended some chaikhanas at the end of the galleries facing the market. We ate there for just a few euros (2 or 3 € for two people). After eating, we headed back to our room to cool off (our B&B is about a 10-minute walk away).

Around 4 PM, we set off to visit the Kokeldash Madrasa, which is still active. On the way, we stopped to watch some bread vendors and take a few photos. We were hesitating about buying some for our evening picnic when a young woman approached us. In perfect English, she asked: ‘Are you looking for something? Do you want to buy bread? Which one? How much?’ She then spoke to one of the vendors and negotiated the price. ‘Do you want one?’ And she took two. She paid directly. I took out my wallet to reimburse her, but she refused. It’s on the house! Then the vendor asked where we were from. And off we went again: Macron, PSG, football players… We’ll have to get used to it. The young woman smiled at the questions and comments, barely gave us time to thank her, and left as quickly as she had approached us.
We continued our walk. Visited the madrasa. Then we crossed the boulevard to see the Tashkent Circus. I would’ve loved to go in and visit, but the ticket seller wouldn’t hear of it. We carried on around what should’ve been a park with old-fashioned rides and attractions. All we found was a construction site. Oh well! Back at our hotel, a message from Nasrullo was waiting for us. He had managed to change our train ticket for the next day. Instead of taking the 6:00 AM train, we’d take the 8:00 AM one. And instead of second class, we’d be in first class! Great! This evening, we had a picnic at one of the breakfast tables in the B&B courtyard. Under a shelter, the owner and his family were celebrating a birthday. The owner started by offering us some tea. Then they brought us some fruit (watermelon and melon). Finally, after the song, candles, and cake cutting, they brought us two generous slices of that beautiful birthday cake. Delicious!

Next, we explored Soviet-era Tashkent, discovering its parks, canals, and squares: Independence Square with its storks and phoenixes, Amir Temur Square with its large statue and, in the background, the massive Soviet-era hotel that has become one of Tashkent’s iconic buildings. Nasrullo took us through Broadway Boulevard and along what he calls ‘Tashkent’s Montmartre’… Well, it’s far, very far from Montmartre (in every sense of the word!). Then we took the metro to Chorsu station. Rush hour is pretty much the same everywhere in the metro… When we arrived at Chorsu, it was time to say goodbye. Nasrullo had to head back to Samarkand. Before leaving, he recommended some chaikhanas at the end of the galleries facing the market. We ate there for just a few euros (2 or 3 € for two people). After eating, we headed back to our room to cool off (our B&B is about a 10-minute walk away).

Around 4 PM, we set off to visit the Kokeldash Madrasa, which is still active. On the way, we stopped to watch some bread vendors and take a few photos. We were hesitating about buying some for our evening picnic when a young woman approached us. In perfect English, she asked: ‘Are you looking for something? Do you want to buy bread? Which one? How much?’ She then spoke to one of the vendors and negotiated the price. ‘Do you want one?’ And she took two. She paid directly. I took out my wallet to reimburse her, but she refused. It’s on the house! Then the vendor asked where we were from. And off we went again: Macron, PSG, football players… We’ll have to get used to it. The young woman smiled at the questions and comments, barely gave us time to thank her, and left as quickly as she had approached us.

We continued our walk. Visited the madrasa. Then we crossed the boulevard to see the Tashkent Circus. I would’ve loved to go in and visit, but the ticket seller wouldn’t hear of it. We carried on around what should’ve been a park with old-fashioned rides and attractions. All we found was a construction site. Oh well! Back at our hotel, a message from Nasrullo was waiting for us. He had managed to change our train ticket for the next day. Instead of taking the 6:00 AM train, we’d take the 8:00 AM one. And instead of second class, we’d be in first class! Great! This evening, we had a picnic at one of the breakfast tables in the B&B courtyard. Under a shelter, the owner and his family were celebrating a birthday. The owner started by offering us some tea. Then they brought us some fruit (watermelon and melon). Finally, after the song, candles, and cake cutting, they brought us two generous slices of that beautiful birthday cake. Delicious!

Je voudrais rallier Och depuis Bichkek par la grande-route, et j'ai plusieurs questions à poser aux connaisseurs, à ce propos.
1 - Ce trajet devrait se dérouler à la fin-mai/début juin de l'année prochaine, les cols sont-ils praticables à coup sûr à cette date ?
2 - Combien de temps le trajet complet dure-t-il (j'imagine que c'est très long, j'aimerais donc le fractionner) ?
3 - Si la route semble très belle, on dirait que les étapes manquent. Où pourrait-on s'arrêter à mi-chemin dans un endroit agréable ?
4 - Compte tenu de la situation politique, Och est-elle une étape convenable, ou vaut-il mieux faire halte à Jalal-Abad, par exemple ?
5 - Enfin, l'itinéraire via Naryn et Kazarman est-il aussi beau, et surtout "raisonnable" à cette date ?

Tout d'abord, Mille mercis à Maxicool qui nous a donné envie de ce voyage, à Nancy qui grâce à son sens logistique nous à indiqué de bonnes adresses et merci aussi à la personne dont je ne me souviens plus du nom qui nous à recommandé de ne pas rater Nurata .
Pour ma part, étant plus sensible à l'anecdote, je me contenterai de raconter au jour le jour quelques extraits de mon journal de voyage, cependant, je suis à la disposition des personnes qui seraient intéressées par des renseignements pratiques .
Le 13 août, départ de Montpellier en TGV . Il fait une chaleur étouffante et nous sommes amusés par les airs de mère poule inquiète de notre plus jeune fils, qui à tenu à nous accompagner à la gare avec nos sacs. 3 heures et demi plus tard, à Paris, sous la pluie et dans la cohue de la gare, je téléphone à l'hôtel Baladin où j'avais réservé au hasard une chambre parce qu'ils ont une navette pour Roissy, comment arriver chez eux. un long trajet RER commence et une heure après, nous voilà arrivés à la gare d'Aulnay sous Bois . Il tombe des trombes d'eau. A gauche de la gare, un car de CRS, dans la gare des "djeun's" capuches sur la tête déconnent, mais le bus que nous à indiqué l'hôtel ne roule pas le dimanche . Les taxis ? Le Dimanche soir veille de 15 août ? Ils sont tous au soleil à Palavas les Flots, ou en tous cas n'ont aucune envie de répondre à un appel venu de la gare d'Aulnay. Re-téléphone à l'hôtel qui soit disant s'occupe de nous en envoyer un, mais une heure après, il est maintenant 21 heure trente, toujours rien. Finalement écoeurés, je sais désormais quelle chaîne d'hôtels je ne choisirai pas " au hasard ", nous reprenons le RER vers Roissy en espérant trouver là-bas une chambre libre . Finalement, à 23 heures, s'il pleut toujours à verses, nous trouvons une chambre où poser nos sacs et c'est, trempés jusqu'aux os, que nous partons à la recherche de quelque chose à se mettre sous la dent parce qu'en France, après onze heures du soir, c'est pas facile !
Le lendemain, étant donné la galère de la veille, oh miracle, le départ se passe sans encombres si ce n'est les 3/4 d'heures de queue pour obtenir un méchant sandwich club à un pris exorbitant et nos deux bières délibérément renversées sur le pantalon de Gil par un serveur fonctionnant au ralenti ..... Le vol Paris/Moscou dans un Airbus A319 passe vite, A Moscou pas de problème non plus on est fort bien drivés vers notre terminal et l'embarquement pour Tachkent se fait exactement à l'heure, dans un airbus A320 bondé . Il y a une trentaine de gosses qui partent ou reviennent de vacances qui chantent des chants de colo repris par d'autres passagers, à coté de moi, une jeune femmes très sympa nous pose les questions qui seront traditionnelles tout au long du voyage dés que nous rencontrerons quelqu'un, à savoir : d'où venez vous, avez vous des enfants, où travaillez-vous ? Comme la soeur de ma prof de Russe qui devait nous recevoir à Tachkent mais finalement nos dates ne coïncidant pas n'a pas pu, m'avait prévenue, j'avais préparé un petit album photo avec des photos des enfants et de "vnouchka" ma petite fille qui à été tout le long du voyage abondamment feuilleté et commenté par toutes nos rencontres 🙂 Le temps de récupérer nos sacs et de remplir nos fiches de police, il est prés de trois heures du mat', mais, mais, mais, notre taxi, qui doit nous conduire au Grand Orzu est là qui nous attend et à l'hôtel, malgré l'heure plus que tardive, il y a aussi quelqu'un pour nous accueillir et même nous proposer un thé ! Après la galère de Paris c'est bien agréable.
Le 15 août, malgré ou à cause du décalage horaire de trois heures, nous nous réveillons vers neuf heures. Le Grand Orzu est un peu vieillot dans une jolie maison construite en carré autour d'une cour avec une petite piscine. Nous prenons un super petit déj dans la cour sous des canisses, il fait un temps splendide, pas trop chaud, bien agréable, le temps idéal pour aller se promener en ville. Au bout de N kilomètres dans ces avenues larges et droites à la soviétique, nous arrivons enfin en centre ville, du coté du quartier surnommé " Brooklin" . Les rues traversent un grand parc avec des bouquinistes d'abord, puis un tas de restaurants . Mais pour l'heure, nous voudrions bien changer nos dollars en sums. Finalement on nous indique une banque qui pour 200$ nous refile trois énormes liasses en fait 25600 sums, à peu près 1226 sums pour 1$ . On se balade encore dans ce quartier, on passe un moment dans un bistrot qui a installé ses tables sur les pelouses, et retour à l'hôtel en taxi pour sieste et farniente dans la cour du Grand Orzu . Faut pas rigoler, c'est les vacances tout de même ! Le soir, repas excellent au Caravan voisin qui est un joli endroit très "mode" semble-t-il, avec vin ouzbek " Omar Khayam" bien sur 🙂 comment pourrait-il en être autrement 😉 et orchestre jazz et Rock, excellent pour la partie Rock.

And then, everything fell into place—I told myself, now’s the time!
Preparations took longer than usual; the destination is still far from mainstream.
