L'État d'Urgence a été déclaré, pour le moment, UNIQUEMENT EN CE QUI CONCERNE LA RÉGION MÉTROPOLITAINE, càd Santiago et les environs immédiats.

Mais. des manifestations ont actuellement lieu dans d'autres villes du Chili et la situation pourrait empirer encore.

La situation s'est fort dégradée ces dernières heures.

Bonjour, Il n'est jamais trop tard pour rendre compte de son voyage. Le confinement me laisse enfin du temps pour le faire. Je suis parti le 17 août 2017 et je suis rentré le 7 février 2018. Entre temps, je suis allé en Argentine par cargo puis une fois sur ce continent, j'ai visité l'Uruguay, l'Argentine et le Chili. Durant tout ce voyage, j'ai tenu un carnet journalier. Je me propose de vous le livrer.

I’ve planned a 3.5-week trip to Chile in February/March 2025, with the goal of driving the Carretera Austral from Puerto Montt to Caleta Tortel in a rented 4x4. The itinerary is set, accommodations are booked, and the 4x4 is reserved. We could still tweak things a bit, but it’s getting harder to find available lodging in some spots.

Here’s the planned route: - 1 night in Puerto Montt on arrival day - 2 nights in Castro (Chiloé Island) - 2 nights near Ensenada - 1 night in Horniporén - 1 night in Chaitén - 3 nights in Puyuhuapi - 2 nights in Coyhaique - 3 nights between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane - 2 nights in Caleta Tortel - 3 nights in Puerto Guadal - 1 night in Chile Chico (to take the ferry across the lake) - 1 night in Villa Cerro Castillo before flying out from Balmaceda

I have a few questions about the activities we’d like to do:

The **Marble Caves**: I’d love an option that lets us "go inside" them. From what I’ve read, this depends on the water level, wind, and type of boat. Any tips or advice? We’d like to do an **excursion to see condors**. We were thinking of doing this while in Coyhaique (we’re staying 2 nights). Has anyone done this? With which agency? We’re spending 3 nights between Puerto Bertrand and Cochrane. The idea is to **explore the vast Patagonia Park and its wildlife**. But I’m not sure where to start. Any recommendations for day hikes or itineraries? I read somewhere that you can do a day trip with a guide that includes a boat ride on Lake Cochrane, but I can’t find the booking info. An agency for **glacier exploration** (we were thinking of **Lake Leones Glacier**). I contacted Ruta León but haven’t heard back. Any agencies to recommend?

Le 23 mai 2020, je pars avec un ami pour 2 semaines (environ) en Bolivie avant de rejoindre le Pérou. Ayant peur, comme l'an dernier, qu'il ne reste plus de place, nous avons déjà réservé le trek de l'inca vers le Machu Picchu pour le 10 juin. Idéalement, nous aimerions arriver à Cusco le 8 juin.

Ma question est la suivante : Quel itinéraire nous conseillerez-vous pour la Bolivie ?

Nous nous imaginions atterrir à Santa Cruz avant de bouger dans la sens des aiguilles d'une montre. Santa Cruz puis Sucre et Potosi avant de rejoindre le Salar d'Uyuni (4j/3n). Nous remonterions vers le volcan Sajama avant d'aller à La Paz pour finir vers le Lac Titicaca (Copacabana, la Isla del sol) avant de quitte le sol bolivien. (ou vaut-il finir par La Paz ?)

Est ce que tout cela vous semble possible en 2 semaines et cohérent ? Quels autres lieux nous conseillerez-vous de visiter ? J'ai lu que certaines personnes ne s'arrêtaient pas à Sucre...

Nous sommes allés cet été avec ma femme et ma fille de 18 mois parcourir l'ouest canadien pour 3 semaines, et je commence déjà à penser à notre futur voyage. Nous sommes déjà allés (sans la petite toutefois) en Islande, Guadeloupe, Slovénie, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Croatie, Sicile... Cependant, j'ai quelques questions : - Equateur, Pérou ou Chili : est-ce possible avec un jeune enfant de 18 mois ? Notamment à cause de l'altitude et le côté sanitaire. - Peut-on combiner sur 3 semaines, Equateur/Galapagos - Pérou/Bolivie - Chili (autre)/Patagonie ? - Quelle est la meilleure période pour chacun ? - En budget, combien faut-il prévoir par jour (nourriture et logement avec 2 chambres) ? - Pour les billets d'avion, combien ça coûte par personne aller/retour pour les meilleures périodes ? - Outre la rando (nous avons l'habitude de randonner, comme en Islande, dans les Rocheuses canadiennes, le Stromboli, bivouac dans les Pyréenées...), quelles sont les activités que nous pourrions faire avec des enfants en bas âge ? - Enfin, est-il possible d'envisager ces pays sans pour autant changer de lieu d'hébergement tous les jours (pas comme en Islande, et avec des enfants, c'est plus compliqué) ?

Bonjour, Comme beaucoup, nous n'avons pas la possibilité de prendre trois semaines de congé à une période autre que les mois de juillet et aout 😕 Nous savons que ce n'est pas la meilleure période pour visiter le Chili mais nous avons prévu, tout de même, de passer 4-5 jours à l'Ile de Pâques, une grosse semaine à SPA et dans l'extrême nord, et une grosse semaine dans le nord de la Patagonie. Parmi les excursions classiques de ces deux dernières régions, qu'est ce que nous pourrons et ne pourrons pas faire pendant l'hiver chilien ?

For our trip to Chile in November, we rented a car from Europcar for our stop in San Pedro de Atacama. We’ll pick up the car at Calama Airport and return it to the agency in San Pedro. We made the reservation through Rentalcars.

The problem is, I just noticed on the booking that it says in the "what you’ll need when picking up the vehicle" section: "Credit card: The card must have sufficient available funds to cover the excess/deposit (which will be blocked on the card for the duration of the rental)." And then it’s written in red: "Cash payments and debit cards are not accepted."

The thing is, we don’t have a credit card—just debit cards (which, by the way, is the case for most people; we just mistakenly call them "credit cards" when they’re actually "debit cards").

I’ve seen cases where the rental company forced people to purchase additional insurance if they didn’t provide a credit card for the deposit, but that was in European countries, and I haven’t found much info about Chile.

Has anyone else run into this issue with Europcar in Calama?

Do you know if they can refuse to give us the car if we don’t have a credit card for the deposit? Just to note, the rental payment has already been debited, and we’ve opted for the "Full Protection" insurance offered by Rentalcars. If they force us to take extra insurance, will it be something beyond this full protection?

However, I’m overwhelmed by the number of options online. I’ll be staying in San Pedro de Atacama for 4 nights. I’d love to explore San Pedro de Atacama and its surroundings. Since I won’t have a vehicle, I’ll likely need to rely on group transfers. What do you recommend as must-see places and activities? And most importantly, which trustworthy providers should I turn to? For our trip in September 2025 from mid-September to early October (3 weeks), we’ve planned 8 days in San Pedro, then a transit night in Santiago, 8 days in Chilean Patagonia, and 3 days for Santiago/Valparaíso before heading back. Is it possible to easily explore with a rental car from a lodge based in Puerto Natales, including visiting Torres del Paine National Park? Or does that mean too much driving in a day, or would it be better to plan an overnight stay in the park or nearby?

We applied for our international driver’s permit in January 2025 for September, hoping to get it in time—I checked the forum about this. Regarding the car rental, do we really need a credit card (not debit) in the main driver’s name for the deposit?

How far in advance should we book entry tickets to the national parks for this period?

To avoid spending three weeks in the somewhat chilly Patagonia, we’re planning to head up to Valparaíso and the Atacama Desert. Here’s the itinerary: Arrival in Buenos Aires Flight to El Calafate (4 nights) Bus to Puerto Natales (1 night) Torres del Paine (4 nights) Santiago (1 night) (flight from Puerto Natales) Valparaíso (4 nights) San Pedro de Atacama (5 nights) Santiago (1 night) then flight to Paris I’m wondering whether it’s worth going all the way to Ushuaia. Sure, it’s a legendary destination, but is it as impressive as El Calafate and Torres del Paine? The other option would be to cut one night from Torres del Paine, Valparaíso, and San Pedro, and spend 3 nights in Ushuaia instead. Also, I’m a bit confused about whether an international driver’s permit is required to drive in Argentina and Chile. I’ve applied for one, but the processing times are really long, and I probably won’t have it before I leave... Thanks for your feedback, Marc

Ou les prestations se font-elles guide + voiture ? Vol Calama - Santiago Vol Santiago Ile de Paques J11 - J12 ? --> faut-il répartir ces jours sur les régions d'Atacama et du sud Lipez ou autre région ? J13 - J14 - J15 : Ile de Pâques J16 : Ile de Paques - Santiago - Paris : ça va nous faire un gros gros temps d'avion : 5h + 4h d'escale + 13h + 3h d'escale + 2h --> vous voyez une façon d'optimiser ou c'est le jeu sur ce type de destination ?

Hi everyone, French travelers in Chile—what credit cards do you use for your various car rentals in the country? I’m traveling in September and was planning to switch my regular debit card (a VISA PREMIER in deferred debit mode) for the deposit guarantee.

My rentals are with Figal in Punta Arenas, Econautos in Arica, and Chilean Rent a Car in Temuco, and all of them want the deposit on a credit card. For me, deferred debit *should* work, but I’ve read comments saying the opposite.

How’s it actually working on the ground with these rental companies right now? Will a deferred debit card work, or not at all?

In France, banks don’t issue credit cards, right—or am I mistaken?

Hello everyone, This coming November, I’ll be joining my family who lives in Villarrica, and I’d love to take the opportunity to climb the volcano. I’ve been dreaming of doing it with my 16-year-old little brother, who’s in excellent physical shape and very athletic. However, after checking out the "reputable" booking sites, I noticed that most guides systematically refuse anyone under 18, with no possibility of an exception—even though I’d be fully prepared to take full responsibility. I think that’s really too bad. Do any of you know if there are any serious agencies or guides who accept young people who are at least 16?
