Le voyage en Amérique du Sud se prépare, départ fin septembre 2020 pour 5 mois. Embarquement de mon pick up avec cellule ultra plate dans un conteneur direction Montevideo. Puis je pique au sud, direction Ushuaïa. C'est là que j'ai une interrogation comment remonter au Nord du Chili pour aller au sud de la Bolivie? Deux itinéraires possibles qui parfois se croisent la Ruta 40 en Argentine ou la Carretera Austral au chili?
Peut-être certains ont fait les deux et leur avis serait sûrement intéressant.

I was planning to go to Réunion and stay in half-board accommodation with non-professionals, but it seems that’s not really the custom there—or maybe my budget isn’t big enough.
So, since I’ve already traveled around Ecuador and Peru, I’m now looking at Argentina, especially for its mountains (like the ones in Réunion that tempted me, even though—frustratingly—I could only admire them from below).
I plan to get around by bus and don’t know in advance where I’ll sleep, so I won’t book ahead. If I like a place, I might stay for several days.
I know that in Chile, it’s easy to find half-board accommodation, but what about in Argentina?
I’d like to stay with locals in half-board without it being a professional setup. I’m not sure if this is common practice there. It’s up to me to find someone willing to host me. What do you think? What would be a fair price (keeping in mind that 40 to 50 € is the max I can spend on accommodation, breakfast, and dinner)?

As I do every month, here’s an overview of the situation in Argentina—useful if you’re planning to visit in the coming weeks!

What’s new? The parallel exchange rate and the official BNA rate are almost the same—just 2% higher for the parallel rate, which won’t really change your trip! Pay as much as possible in cash—discounts are still common at bars, restaurants, and even hotels. Even if it’s not advertised, always ask! You can still withdraw cash via Western Union, as before. Paying with a Visa or other card is still possible, and the CCL rate is even above the parallel rate today, meaning +3% compared to the official rate. However, you won’t get discounts when paying by card.
As always, **do not** withdraw money from ATMs—the fees in Argentina are still outrageous. Also, don’t forget that winter break in Argentina starts today, Friday, July 4, in 10 provinces for two weeks, until Sunday, July 20. On Friday, July 11, it begins in 9 more provinces until Sunday, July 27, and finally, in the last 4 provinces (including Buenos Aires and the city of Buenos Aires—the most populated), it runs from Friday, July 18, until Sunday, August 3. In short: 3 zones, each with two weeks off, stretching over 4 weeks total.
In previous years, I’d have warned you: “Be careful if you’re traveling, as buses, flights, and often accommodations are at high occupancy.” But this year, poorer and middle-class Argentines aren’t traveling because “No hay plata,” and those who can afford it are heading to Brazil, Chile, or even Miami for cheaper parties and shopping—Brazil can be twice as affordable! So, in Argentina, the top destinations for these staggered winter breaks are Bariloche (first place), followed by Ushuaia, San Martín de los Andes, and Villa La Angostura. Mendoza comes in fifth, then El Calafate, and finally Salta and Córdoba. As you can see, wealthy Argentines travel in winter to see snow—it’s chic to be cold and go skiing! Bariloche is the most expensive, while Córdoba is the cheapest. Same services, for example, a flight plus 7 days plus a hotel in the same category: Bariloche is 2.5 to 3 times pricier than Córdoba or even the sierras of Córdoba. Yet, there’s plenty of availability. Most people don’t have the money (and you might say Patagonian winter destinations aren’t exactly middle-class friendly either), but with fewer Brazilians or Chileans taking advantage of “cheap” Argentina, space is freed up. Brazilians alone used to make up 50% of Argentina’s international tourism—so there are suddenly fewer people on flights and in hotels! For these destinations, hoteliers are hoping for (at best) a 70% occupancy rate, though 50% would already make them happy. Why? 1- Lack of foreign tourists, 2- The middle class preferring to visit the old aunt in Posadas (to show family loyalty and spend as little as possible),
3- The wealthy opting for Bariloche, Punta Cana, Búzios, or Miami, which drastically lowers domestic occupancy rates and increases the outflow of USD abroad. +66% of Argentine tourists traveled abroad in the first five months of 2025. Six million Argentines vacationed abroad between January 1 and May 1, 2025.

Nous avions essayé d'avoir des informations sur le taux de change il y a quelques jours, mais n'avions pas eu d'informations précises. Comme nous sommes maintenant sur place voici quelques nouvelles Le meilleur taux de change officiel , la banque de la nación : vendredi 8 novembre 65,9 ars pour 1€ mais au noir dans le centre de Buenos Aires ( Florida ou Lavalle) le taux est bien supérieur : 70,00 ars pour 1€ Eviter les cuevas officielles, le cours était à 62 ars pour 1 € et bien sur éviter de faire des retraits dans des DAB. Pour nous touristes l'Argentine est très peu chère actuellement juste un ex. à la même époque l'année dernière le litre de super à Salta était de 42,3 ars cette année le litre de super est à 52,90 ars , la seule différence c'est que l'année dernière nous avions 40ars pour 1€ et cette année nous avons autour de 66 ars pour 1€ et même 70 ars pour 1€ au noir. Même si l'ex que l'on donne ne permet pas une totale vision du taux de l'inflation ( car le prix de l'essence n'a pas subi la même hausse que d'autres produits) Autre ex les repas au restaurant sont pour nous beaucoup moins chers que l'année derniere pour une même prestation. Qu'entendez vous par" difficulté à se faire au pesos?". J'y serais 5 semaines en janvier , avez vous eu des difficultés pour retirer du liquides aux DAB ? . Il y a une limite + taxe à chaque retrait n'est ce pas....pourriez vous men dire un peu plus s'il vous plaît ?. D'avance merci.

Comme beaucoup, nous n'avons pas la possibilité de prendre trois semaines de congé à une période autre que les mois de juillet et aout 😕
Nous savons que ce n'est pas la meilleure période pour visiter le Chili
mais nous avons prévu, tout de même, de passer 4-5 jours à l'Ile de Pâques,
une grosse semaine à SPA et dans l'extrême nord,
et une grosse semaine dans le nord de la Patagonie.
Parmi les excursions classiques de ces deux dernières régions,
qu'est ce que nous pourrons et ne pourrons pas faire pendant l'hiver chilien ?

L'État d'Urgence a été déclaré, pour le moment, UNIQUEMENT EN CE QUI CONCERNE LA RÉGION MÉTROPOLITAINE, càd Santiago et les environs immédiats.

we’ll be in Calama at the end of March 2026, and I’m looking for a reliable car rental there for a 7-day road trip to Salta, Argentina. But I’m struggling with the car rental agencies in Calama because the reviews can be scary. I saw Gyg, which has great ratings, but I’m a bit wary (5/5 from 59 reviews—either the guy’s amazing or it’s fake...), but I can’t find any recent reviews on VF in general.
For Punta Arenas, I booked with Dachelet and didn’t have any issues with email exchanges.

I’m not an experienced 4x4 driver—I’ve only driven occasionally to give the main driver a break on easy sections. A van is tempting for the comfort. Are there any rental options for slightly modified cars or ones where you can sleep, like a Kangoo?

We're planning a trip to southern Chile in November. Here's our tentative itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Santiago, then a flight the next day to Balmaceda where we'll pick up a rental car to reach Coyhaique.
Day 3: Walk in the Coyhaique National Reserve, then continue to Puerto Chacabuco. Return to Coyhaique for the second night.
Day 4: Drive to Villa Cerro Castillo for a hike in the national park. Continue to Puerto Tranquilo and stay there for 3 nights.
Day 5: Boat tour on Laguna San Rafael.
Day 6: Day trip to Monte San Valentin Glacier.
Day 7: Excursion to the Marble Chapels, then drive to Puerto Guadal. We'll stay there for 3 nights.
Day 8: Walk along Lago Carrera and return to Puerto Guadal.
Day 9: Rio Baker Valley and, if possible, a glacier excursion.
Day 10: Drive to Cochrane and hike in Tamango National Reserve. We'll stay 2 nights in Cochrane.
Day 11: Walk in the Chacabuco Valley.
Day 12: Drive to Caleta Tortel. We'll stay there for 2 nights.
Day 13: Cruise in the Rio Baker delta.
Day 14: Return to Cochrane.
Day 15: Return to Balmaceda in two stages.
Day 16: Continue the return journey.
Day 17: Return the rental car and head back to Santiago.
After this, we're also planning to explore northern Santiago. I'll post about that part once I have a clearer idea of the route.

Today, we started looking into traveling in April 2026, either to Chile or Argentina. It’s our first trip to South America. I’ve only been to French Guiana once, about ten years ago, for the space center. In recent years, we’ve usually gone to Asia during the spring holidays.
Based on the flight tickets I’ve found, two arrival and departure options are available: - Arriving in Buenos Aires and departing from Salvador de Bahia. - Arriving in Santiago, Chile, and still departing from Salvador de Bahia.
We’re considering flying business class on the outbound flight so we arrive a bit more rested. The travel class might influence our choice between itinerary A or B.
We’d like to spend two days at Iguazu Falls (both the Argentine and Brazilian sides), which explains the departure from Brazil.
Initially, we thought about arriving in Buenos Aires and staying in Argentina before heading to Iguazu. However, the itinerary forces us to go back through Buenos Aires.
We love nature. The El Calafate region seems to offer beautiful, easily accessible landscapes. Maybe there’s another area we should prioritize.
Here are two itineraries—what do you think? I know it’s short, but we can’t add any more days. We’ll have to make it work.

Not wanting to go through a traditional travel agency—often based in France and only offering "items pulled from an internet catalog"—I’ve decided to plan this trip to Chile on my own this year, in March-April.
However, I’m overwhelmed by the number of options online.
I’ll be staying in San Pedro de Atacama for 4 nights. I’d love to explore San Pedro de Atacama and its surroundings.
Since I won’t have a vehicle, I’ll likely need to rely on group transfers. What do you recommend as must-see places and activities? And most importantly, which trustworthy providers should I turn to?

Le but de notre étude porte sur la faisabilité de faire ce périple en voiture ou en avion + voiture (sur place une semaine à chaque région), d’où un ardent calcul des coûts de chaque option. En louant un véhicule (Grosse berline) chez Hertz avec notre vol Lufthansa nous sommes à 1300 euros pour la boucle (Kms illimités pour 30 jours).
Je souhaiterai donc obtenir vos retours d’expériences sur leur prix actuel du litre d’essence et gasoil afin d’intégrer à nos calculs le prix du carburant (E ou G).

we’re planning a round trip from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, to Salta, Argentina, in two months. On the way there, we’ll take the northern route via Susques, Route 27, then 52. But for the return, we were thinking of taking the southern route via San Antonio de los Cobres, Route 51, then 23. Is it similar to the northern route in terms of road surface? How busy is it, and are there gas stations? Basically, should we be worried about doing it in an SUV that’s supposedly 4x4 but has regular road tires and no second spare wheel, obviously...
I’ve seen that we can stop over in San Antonio de los Cobres.

hi everyone, I’m just back from a 5-week trip to Argentina’s Northwest and San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. This was my second visit to the area—20 years apart—and my third trip to Argentina overall.
still just as stunning!
this time I explored the El Peñón and Antofagasta de la Sierra region in Catamarca province; I can’t recommend it enough.
the road from Cafayate is good—easy in a Renault Logan—and once you’re there you’ve got 4x4 excursions and hikes.
way fewer tourists than around Salta, and the landscapes are totally different.

On our way back from Punta Arenas, we’ll be staying in Santiago for 4 days before heading home.
Could you recommend any places to stay and neighborhoods in Santiago that are budget-friendly, please?
We’d also like to visit Valparaíso despite some safety concerns. Is it better to hire a guide or book a organized tour from Santiago? Or can we plan it independently?
Can this be done in a day?

I’m planning a 3-week trip to Patagonia and Chile at the end of March. I’m looking for a pretty chill itinerary that isn’t too tiring for health reasons, but still a nice trip...
To avoid spending three weeks in the somewhat chilly Patagonia, we’re planning to head up to Valparaíso and the Atacama Desert. Here’s the itinerary:
Arrival in Buenos Aires
Flight to El Calafate (4 nights)
Bus to Puerto Natales (1 night)
Torres del Paine (4 nights)
Santiago (1 night) (flight from Puerto Natales)
Valparaíso (4 nights)
San Pedro de Atacama (5 nights)
Santiago (1 night) then flight to Paris
I’m wondering whether it’s worth going all the way to Ushuaia. Sure, it’s a legendary destination, but is it as impressive as El Calafate and Torres del Paine?
The other option would be to cut one night from Torres del Paine, Valparaíso, and San Pedro, and spend 3 nights in Ushuaia instead.
Also, I’m a bit confused about whether an international driver’s permit is required to drive in Argentina and Chile. I’ve applied for one, but the processing times are really long, and I probably won’t have it before I leave...

Nous avons prévu pour 2021 un tour du monde et nous avons environ 3 semaines au chili (hors ile de Paques). Il y a l'air d'avoir énormement de choses à faire et à voir dans l'extreme nord, et en avril ce n'est pas forcément la bonne saison en patagonie.
Notre premier itinéraire ressemble à ça : - Santiago 2 jours - Valparaiso 3 jours - Arica 1 jours - Putre / Parc Lauca / Salar de Surir etc 2 jours - Route jusque Iquique avec Matilla et Pica 1 jour - Iquique 1 jour - San Pedro De Atacama 5 jours - Route jusque Antofogasta 1 jours - Caldera 1 jour - Laguna Santa rosa / Salar Maricunga ... 1-2 jours - 1 journée off quelque part - Puis retour sur Calama pour partir à Uyuni

J'envisage un voyage entre Chili et Bolivie d'une dizaine de jours, en août prochain. (nous serons 2) L'idée serait d'atterrir à Santiago, de rejoindre Calama en avion puis San Pedro de Atacama. De là, j'envisage ceci : -quelques excursions à la journée ou demi-journée pour découvrir l'Atacama (vallée de la Lune, lagunes, geysers...) - 3 à 4 jours -un tour vers Uyuni et le salar bolivien avec retour sur San Pedro - 3 à 4 jours Fin de voyage par Calama et Santiago.
Ma question est la suivante : je ne comprends pas la différence de prix que je peux observer entre les agences : si je regarde Tripadvisor et ses propositions, je trouve des excursions autour de San Pedro entre 25 et 80€ et un tour vers Uyuni autour de 180 à 250€ environ. Par contre, si je contacte certaines agences (dont les guides sont francophones et qui sont déjà mentionnées dans diverses discussions de ce forum), j'atteins des prix radicalement plus élevés, se chiffrant en milliers de dollars. Bien sûr, avoir un guide pour soi et non se retrouver avec 4-5 autres "inconnusé" à un prix, qu'il soit francophone aussi, mais malgré tout je m'interroge : en dehors de ces critères et du logement plus ou moins de qualité, le parcours proposé semble souvent tourné autour des mêmes spots... Pouvez-vous m'en dire plus ? Certains ont-ils déjà réalisé une réservation en ligne avec des agences proposant les prix plus "raisonnables" que l'on peut trouver via des sites de type Tripadvisor ???
