Check-In and Rooms:The sight of the hotel as we got out of the bus made us feel that maybe it was all worth it. The reception area (which was open air) was just BEAUTIFUL. We arrived at the resort around 10 pm, unfortunately they only had 1 person at reception, and we were all tired and anxious to get to our rooms and get something to eat. The wait wasn’t too bad considering. I had called a week ahead and requested an ocean-view room with a king size bed. None of the rooms have an ocean-view, so they gave us a pool view, which was
nice, the room was 549, it was close to all the restaurants as well as the beach and the pool. When you do get a room, try to get it in the 500 series as the resort is big, and the other rooms are dispersed far from the restaurants and would require a lot of walking.
Our luggage and us were transferred to the room via golf carts.
The rooms are VERY clean and VERY VERY
nice, although we didn’t get a king size bed, we got 2 twin beds that they combined for us to make a bigger bed. The bathroom is great, marble countertop, lots of toiletries provided include: soap, shampoo, conditioner, aftershave, shoe shiner, sewing kit, shaving kit, shower (not bathtub) and toilet are in separate little spaces with doors. Our toilet functioned great, water pressure was great as well. All rooms have balconies with two rocking chairs and a small table. Furniture is all modern and new, comes with a hairdryer, you will NOT find a coffee machine/alarm clock/radio. There’s a Philips TV that has channels that include: Discovery, CNN, HBO, SuperStation, Cartoon Network and many more.
The air conditioner worked like a charm, but we only needed it rarely as the temperature was fair and we got very cold at night if we were to leave it on.
Food & Drinks: We went to
Cuba with low expectations, we had been to the Dominican 8 months ago and just loved the food. What I’m going to list is a general consensus from lots of people in addition to our personal views:
Breakfast – BEST meal of the day, as-you-like omelets with lots of different choices, eggs, milkshakes, cereals, pastries (a little dry though), bread (sometimes stale, sometimes too dry), assortment of cold cuts, bacon, pancakes (tasted funny), French toast (very good), boiled eggs, and a hot plate (sometimes chicken, sometimes beef, I think a little too much for breakfast).
Lunch – lunch is served at the restaurant by the beach. Lunch was good for the most part, but very repetitive, fresh personalized size pizza made as you order (very very good), fries, burgers, chicken, pork, lamb chops (sometimes), beef, fish served off the grill. Assortment of salads, and some hot dishes that included rice, potatoes, and chicken, almost always that wasn’t a good choice, rice was never cooked, and potatoes were always hard. We had pizza, fries, burgers and beef steaks pretty much all week for lunch.
Dinner – dinner as someone we met said is always a ‘wild card’, sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss, I personally ended up having a pizza for dinner every night, not much selection, and not very good food, they had rotisserie chicken every night (dry), chef sautéed mussels, chunks of lobster and fish for you, HUGE lineup for that though as they only had one pan going, and that’s with the resort 1/3 full. They had theme nights, but the food never really represented the theme night, the closest thing they had for German night is hot dogs!! Not much fish for seafood night either.
A la Carte restaurants: 2
Italian: was ok, not that good, we didn’t enjoy it much.
Mediterranean: was great!! Probably the best meal we’ve had during the whole entire time, menu included one full grilled lobster, shrimps, filet mignon, seafood salad, seafood bisque, smoked salmon. Dessert was pretty good too.
Note: You can book at either restaurants as many times as you’d like, they were never both on the same night instead alternated everyday. You have to make it to breakfast before 8:45 am to ensure that you can book. If I were you I’d try to book in the Mediterranean as many times as you can get in, you’re not missing anything at the buffet.
Bars:plenty of drinks, pool bar, snack bar, lobby bar, beach bar is not built yet, they made everything you ask for, Bahama Mammas are excellent, tried mojitos (Cuban drink), you need fresh mint for that, they might not have it, if you give the bartender $ he’ll get some for you. By the end of the week that they had put together a drinks menu. Oh yes and the pina coladas were great. Bartenders are very very friendly, Armando @ the pool bar is great!! You get a selection between Cuban/Spanish wines, we tried the red and it’s not bad.
Weather:Overcast first day, but generally sunny and hot weather for rest of week, rained plenty on first day and didn’t rain again. It got hotter as the week neared to an end. Breezy though and the nights aren’t humid.
Beach & Pool:There were several pools, a combination of shallow and semi deep, none of the pools are very deep, I’m 5’ 2” and they were perfect for me, but my boyfriend who enjoys diving couldn’t really dive.
Beach was white sand, plenty of beach chairs and shade, seaweed problem though, since it’s a new resort, they’re still cleaning it out, but the sand is
nice and soft.
Excursions & Disco & Massages:We took the moped for $8/hour to the town of Guaradalvaca (15 – 20 minutes). That was fun. The town is very very small, there’s a
nice beach, and vendors, it won’t take you more than ½ hour to get the town, you can spend time on the beach (local beach), some bars around as well, and what ‘commercial centers’ where you can purchase cigars.
Apparently the Dolphins excursion is great, ½ day @ what is
Cuba’s seaworld. The price on the resort is $80 US which we thought was too much and decided not to spend the $, we found out too late that if you had gone to the park yourself the tickets are sold for $50 US. It’s about 10 minutes away from the resort.
We made it to the disco one night out of the 7, and it was actually pretty good, and if we were not too tired every night we probably would have gone more often.
Massages are offered at a cost of $20US/hour @ room 446 by a Cuban lady. We offered to pay her privately and she agreed to $15US/person paid directly to herself. And I’m glad we did b/c it wasn’t worth it!!! She basically slathered you with a TON of oil and gave you a back rub for an hour, if you have knots or you’re in pain don’t count on her changing anything, she even had a chair that she was sitting on for the whole hour! And we also had about 6 or 7 interruptions. The minute you walked out of the room you were attacked with mosquitoes. Apparently they like the smell of the oil that she uses. I couldn’t wait to take a hot shower.
Negatives:
- A big problem on the resort, TONS of mosquitoes, and I mean a lot!! I had over 60 bites on my back alone, we went through 3 bottles of bug spray.
- There are lots of stairs, that might pose a problem to elderly, people with children, or people who tend to over drink! You need the stairs to get to almost everywhere, so there’s really no avoiding them unless you plan on walking lots to go to the places you need to go to.
- Food was so so
- We lost hot water for 3 days out of the 7 that we were there, and we also had a power failure for several hours.
- As of yet internet and email is not available for visitors to use. "
