Recovery operations are behind schedule following Hurricane Wilma's passage over the northern
Yucatan peninsula in late October. Many of
Mexico's Caribbean resort areas, including
Cancun,
Cozumel and
Playa del Carmen, were significantly damaged. The BBC on Dec. 20 reported that roughly 80 percent of nightclubs and bars in the
Cancun area remain closed to the public. Also, the
Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau admitted that only about one-third of the region's 27, 000 hotel rooms are ready for use, despite official estimates that over half the hotels would be open by the Christmas holiday.
Despite the slow recovery efforts, the
Cancun International Airport
(CUN) is operating normally.
