Bonjour,
"We do currently have vehicles available in mid July and if you decide to visit the Southern area of
Tanzania it is essential that you have mechanical knowledge should a problem occur and be competent driving a 4x4 and with African culture. We are 10 hours away from
Dar es Salaam and there is an additional cost of US$400 one way to drop off and/or collect the car from Dar, so $800 if you decide to do this.
To fill you in on the rest of our operation...
Our vehicles are 110 Landrover defenders and fully kitted out with all the camping equipment you need for 4 people. The vehicles have a roof top tent (sleeps 2 only) so you would need to take a ground tent also. Our 2014 daily rate is US$330 to include GPS, maps, mobile phone (with dual SIM cards), 240 volt invertor for charging cameras etc, stereo with IPOD connection, fridge/freezer (dual battery system) and food starter box. For a full list please refer to our website
www.shawsafaris.com
The vehicle comes with a full tank of fuel and needs to be returned with a full tank and includes unlimited mileage.
Before you leave for safari, we will send you a trip manual which covers everything from setting up camp to road conditions in
Tanzania. You also receive a full briefing on the vehicle and all its equipment before you depart for safari. For this reason, the majority of our clients stay with us at our small lodge/bush home which is right on the boundary of
Arusha National Park. Our rates for the lodge are US$166.50 per person per night Half board. Drinks and Laundry are extra. During this time, we also go through your itinerary and where to stop for extra food and fuel etc. Airport transfers are $75 one way KIA to/from the lodge and $85
Arusha Airport to/from the lodge. If we deliver the vehicle to Dar then we still need to do the briefing at your hotel before you leave.
Our vehicles are regularly maintained and serviced, but due to the state of the roads some problems are un-forseeable. In the Northern circuit we have a network of people we can call on to assist you should a problem occur. The road between
Ngorongoro and the
Serengeti is VERY corrugated and dusty and accidents will occur if you drive too fast. When we say the road is bad, we mean really terrible so please be prepared for this! In the South we do not have a network of people to call on hence the reason for mechanical knowledge. Paul, my husband is a mechanic and is always at the end of the phone to offer advice. Self-drive is about independent travel and so you need to be confident in the vehicle (and know your way around under the bonnet) and understand and respect the local culture.
I can help plan an itinerary and book any extra accommodation along the way if needed or you can do it independently. There are 2 sorts of campsites within the National Parks. Public campsites have a few amenities like toilets, showers and running water and cost US$30 per adult, US$10 per child per night. These are paid for at the Park entrance gate along with your park fees by credit card. Then, there are special campsites which need to be pre-booked and cost US$50 per adult, US$20 per child per night. Here, you have
no facilities at all and you are completely on your own (subject to availability). They are just a clearing in the bush, in some very beautiful spots. We charge a US$50 admin fee for booking the special campsites, as it is a lengthy process with numerous trips to the booking office. Both campsites are unfenced and so you can expect wild game to enter the campsites at night.
All National Park entrance fees have increased by $10 per person per 24 hours and by $8 per vehicle per 24 hours as from July. I have attached the new rates. The rates for the
Selous are different and I have attached these also.
