J'explique :
Depuis des années, j'explore ce forum et y trouve l'inspiration pour de nombreux voyages .
Je pose des questions précises qui trouvent une ( ou des ) réponses et l'itinéraire se construit ...Avec l'aide de quelques habitué(e)s qui sont devenues, en peu de temps, des amies, j'ai mis sur pied, pour mai prochain, un voyage de 3 semaines sur place et en "one way", vers l'Ouest : déjà un grand merci à Hiacinthe, à Mimimicha, à Lol64 et à bien d'autres, dont les récits m'ont inspirée et dont j'ai pillé les carnets ...
Une pensée toute particulière à Christine qui a suivi sans tanguer mes errements du début !
Vu notre âge, ce sera sans doute le dernier périple qui nous mènera aussi loin ( rassurez - vous , il y a d'autres destinations déjà prévues ... ) et, bien que mes questions bien particulières et nos contraintes bizarres n'intéresseront que peu de monde, je poste cet itinéraire qui est complètement réservé, en "annulable" sauf les avions .
-- Départ début mai 2017, Bruxelles - Albuquerque, escale Atlanta, par Delta Airlines .
Arrivée à 21 h ; prise de la voiture ( SUV Midsize chez Alamo )
-- 1 journée récupération, tri valises, achats de 1ère nécessité et découverte ( rapide ... ) de la ville .
--3 nuits à Santa Fé ; 1 nuit à Taos .
-- 2 nuits à Durango ( le train ! ).
-- 3 nuits à Moab.
-- 2 nuits à Torrey .
--1 nuit à Cannonville et 2 à Bryce City .
--1 nuit à Springdale, 1 à Overton et la dernière à Las Vegas .
--Retour : Las Vegas - Bruxelles , escale à Atlanta, toujours par Delta .
Le départ : un peu tôt dans l'année, sans doute, mais c'était çà ... ou rien !
Rien qu'en l'écrivant, j'imagine que ceux qui ont eu la patience de me lire se disent : houlà, trop vite sur la fin !
C'est que la fin, justement, nous l'avons faite l'an passé, retour de Page ( White Pocket, ... ) ; hélas, éboulement dans le Zion et des balades fermées .
Quant à Valley of Fire, nous avons dû courir ( au sens propre ), entre Fire Wave et le parking : la nuit tombait !
Pour le reste, nous avions passé, il y a... longtemps, 3 X 1 mois là bas .
J'ai épinglé ce que nous désirions ( re ) voir : le Nouveau Mexique, la région de Moab et Bryce .
Le problème : nous aimons les randos mais, si nous étions de bon randonneurs, nous sommes freinés dans notre envie de découvrir : un ex. tout à fait typique , nous ne descendrons pas dans l'amphithéâtre, au Bryce ... Les balades qui commencent par une grosse descente étant exclues, nous en avons sélectionné qq unes, comme Tent Rocks dans le N M : rebrousser chemin s'il le faut, pourquoi pas ?
J'aurais besoin d'aide et d'idées en plus dans la région de Moab et de Capitol Reef ... : juste de la voiture et des points de vue vont nous laisser un peu sur notre faim ...

Me relisant, j'ai oublié l'essentiel !
Je pense que vous l'avez compris : nous ne cherchons pas à "rentabiliser" ces 20 jours à tout prix c à d en voir le plus possible, d'ajouter un crochet ici, un détour par là pour en voir plus !
S'en mettre plein les yeux, oui, mais aussi se poser parfois, profiter de paysages somptueux ou d'une ambiance particulière : voilà l'idée ...

Vous dites vouloir découvrir le Nouveau-Mexique et vouloir faire des randos sans trop de dénivelé. Une suggestion : explorer les badlands, Bisti par exemple où l'on peut faire une très belle balade (du côté sud) en restant tout le long sur le plat.

Tu crois que ça ne fait pas un peu trop dans le coin, puisque vous ne descendrez pas dans l'amphithéâtre de Bryce?
Et si vous profitiez un peu plus de Capitol Reef en faisant Cathedral Valley avec un outfitter? Je ne me rappelle plus si vous l'aviez déjà fait?

Pour le rafting sur le Colorado du côté de Moab, les agences ne manquent pas. Tu as, par exemple, Tag-A-Long Expeditions (très pro) : http://tagalong.com/
Attention ! Le Colorado va remuer beaucoup plus qu'en été (période à laquelle nous avons fait du raft du côté de Moab).

J'avais aussi fait quelques recherches du côté de White Pocket et j'avais noté des retours très positifs avec Dreamlands à Kanab. Si ça t'intéresse, je peux retrouver la personne qui en parle (j'ai tout noté sur mon ordi 😇)

L'an passé, nous sommes allés à White Pocket : eh oui, avec Susan Dodson !
Nous avions été très contents : je dirais que, sur les 12 jours que nous étions dans l'Arirona et l'Utah, c'était la meilleure journée ...
Il faisait chaud mais supportable ( + ou - 35 ou 36 ° ), fin septembre et temps superbes ; photos mémorables !
Nous n'avions pas envisagé la piste avec une voiture ordinaire : nous avons réalisé en revenant que c'était raisonnable ...
Je vais étudier le programme pour Capitol Reef mais je dois d'abord me remémorer de mon pgm pour la Haute Vallée du Nil, en mars ( 10ème voyage , quasi d'études ! ! ! ) ...
Pour la partie nord de Capitol Reef NP (Cathedral Valley), j'ai regardé ce que propose "Dreamland Safari Tours", mais je n'ai pas vu d'excursion en 4x4 dans ce coin (http://www.dreamlandtours.net/)

Non, sérieux, là, je me déconnecte. Je verrai bien en rentrant ce que vous allez faire.
Les bagages sont prêts, départ de la maison demain matin 7h, en espérant que le vol ne soit pas trop agité avec la météo qui est prévue. Il y a déjà un très méchant vent qui fait claquer la trappe de la cheminée.
Vu qu'on va à Madrid pour la correspondance, peut-être que ce sera "moins pire".😕 Mais la traversée de l'Atlantique???? On verra bien. Je déteste quand ça bouge trop😠.

Pour ceux que cela intéresse, je viens de réserver le train Durango - Silverton : les réservations pour la saison printemps été fonctionnent en ligne, depuis 24 heures .
Vu la météo usuelle en tout début mai, je n'ai pas réservé le package avec une visite des mines, trajet en jeep, à partir de Silverton : en général, risque de neige et en tout cas, bien froid ...
Du coup, vu l'économie ( ! ), nous allons nous pencher sur la possibilité de "sous-traiter' qq chose du côté de Capitol Reef ... ou non .
Super nouvelle ! Alors, finalement, train aller-retour ou train + bus ? Voiture ouverte ou version plus "luxe" ? Il faudra venir nous raconter ton expérience ... 😉
Et si ça te laisse le loisir d'opter pour un second tour à Capitol Reef, c'est tout bénef ! Je vois que les choses se précisent ... et approchent doucement mais sûrement 🙂

Ah voilà, je la trouve ta discussion...
Je n'ai pas grand chose à ajouter, sauf que mon mari a trouvé Hickman Bridge assez épuisante en début de journée (pourtant nous avons évité la grosse chaleur). De mon côté, à part le début qui grimpe assez fort, j'ai trouvé cette balade agréable; il suffit de monter à son rythme, sans forcer.

C'est le début de saison et tous les trains ne roulent pas : seulement 1 et seulement 1 bus ...
Seulement quelques types de voiture , dans ce train .
Si jamais le temps est super beau ... ou si on propose, à Durango, qq chose à ajouter,
nous pourrons aller à la gare la veille voir ce qui en est : mon mari aime la géologie mais pas au point d'être congelé !

Je reviens sur 'mon' fil , après une longue absence sur cette destination : autre voyage, bien rentrée, rebelote la préparation ...
J'ai commencé par le plus facile ( pour moi ) : retour au Nouveau Mexique, où nous avons le temps .
Une question cependant : pouvons nous nous contenter de faire une partie de la Turquoise Trail, à partir de Madrid jusqu'à Santa Fé ? Nous pensons, en partant d'Albuquerque, faire la balade de Kasha Katuwe, en y arrivant le plus tôt possible et donc y arriver par la route rapide ?
Plus important : à Moab , nous passerons 3 nuits .
Arches sera en partie fermé et/ou embouteillé par les engins de chantier : à voir sur place, mais pour nous, c'est moins grave car nous y avons passé la journée une autre année .
J'aurais volontiers été revoir le coucher de soleil sur Delicate Arche ... mais nous aviserons sur place.
Ma question : l'ordre des visites dans Canyonlands .
L'ordre logique serait du Visitor Center, de passer par Mesa Arch, puis d'aller vers Grand View Point , avec les petites baladespartant de ces points .
Y a -t-il une raison de changer l'ordre ? la chaleur ? Arriver là au lever du soleil ne me semble pas réaliste ( pour nous ) !
Nous pensons aller à Dead Horse Point un autre jour ; même question : moment le plus favorable ?

Oui, c'est possible.
En fait, nous avons fait un itinéraire un peu différent : après notre matinée à Albuquerque, nous avons parcouru la Turquoise Trail tout du long jusqu'à Santa Fe. Voici le tracé : https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2094/maps
Concernant "Delicate Arch" au coucher du soleil, il faudrait le prévoir un vendredi ou un samedi compte tenu de ce qui est écrit sur le site officiel de Arches NP :
"Roads close Sunday through Thursday nights at 7 pm."
Dans Canyonlands NP, en Mai, je ne pense pas que tu auras très chaud. En plus des balades, si tu as un 4x4, envisages-tu de rouler sur la Shafer Trail et la Potash Road ?le plan du parc : https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/upload/island.pdf
Nous avons adoré les points de vue de Dead Horse State Park au coucher du soleil.
Itinéraire prêt ; il nous reste à sélectionner, sur place, le choix des balades selon la météo, la fatigue et ... le temps disponible !

A ce stade, les prix ont été vérifiés mais pas de miracle : un seul avait baissé !
J1 : vol Bruxelles - Albuquerque ( 1 escale ) ; arrivée tard le soir ...
J2 : Comme dit, réorganisation des bagages, achats de 1ère nécessité et brève visite de la ville .
J3 : Route vers Santa Fe. En chemin, balade dans Kasha-Katuwe Nat'l monument (3h).
Turquoise Trail (visite de Madrid et Cerillos ).
3 nuits en B&B à S F .
J4 -5 : Santa Fe : la ville, y compris le Museum Hill.
J6 : route vers Taos (110 km ) par la route 76 : Chimayo, Truchas, Las Trampas et visites.
Nuit à Taos.
J7 : route vers Durango (320 km) ; 2 nuits à l'hôtel Strater.
J8 : Train Durango- Silverton AR, réservé.
J9 : Route vers Moab (250 km), 3 nuits. Arrivée le samedi après-midi, fin de journée dans Arches.
J10 : Canyonland ( Island in the sky ) : aussi tôt que possible, Mesa Arch puis retour au Visitor Center et randonnées.
Fin de journée : Dead Horse Point Park.
J11 : Au choix, balades non faites dans Arches ou boucle par Castle Valley, retour par la I 70 ou farniente 1/2 journée ...

J12 : Reprendre la route de la veille vers Fruita ; randos et visites à à préciser .
J13 : route de Torrey à Cannonville, par Boulder ( Musée Archéologique ? ) ; Burr road Trail ( A R sur la partie bitumée ? ), Petrified F.St.Park ( ? ) puis Scenic Road 12 jusqu'à Cannonville : 1 nuit en cabin .
En fin de journée, Kodachrome Basin ( pour le Sunset ) .
J13 et 14 : route vers Bryce City, après avoir continué la visite de K.B., Willis Creek ( ? ) puis Mossy Cave .
Arrivée au Bryce : aller vers 16 h sur la Rim, pour la fin de la journée ( Sunset Point )
Le lendemain, tous les points de vue et une balade dans l'amphithéâtre : descendre par Wall Street et remonter par Queens Garden ( pour limiter la dénivelée ... ) .
J15 : route vers Springdale ( 135 kms ) ; en passant près de Zion, se garer pour faire la rando Canyon Overlook .
Nuit à Springdale .
J16 : suite des balades à Zion ( ce qu'on n'a pas pu faire l'an passé : routes fermées ! ) et Overton pour la nuit .
Fin de journée dans Valley of Fire .
J17 : avant le pet. déj., retour dans ce parc jusqu'à 11 h .
Route vers Las Vegas .
J18 et 19 : 2 nuits à Las Vegas .
J20 : avion tôt et retour .
J'ai encore des ? ? ? pour le J 13 ...
Si vous voyez des successions de routes ou visites incohérents ?
Petit rappel : nous ne voulons pas surcharger l'itinéraire ; d'autre part, nous avons vu certains sites tout proches , comme Mesa Verde, ... lors de voyages précédents .

Comme tu as des questions sur J13:

Et pourquoi ne pas envisager la Notom Rd si la météo le permet? Quel enchantement, cette route! Tout à fait praticable par temps sec.
Tu débouches sur Boulder et son petit musée (vite fait), et tu reprends la Scenic 12 à partir d'ici.
Entre Zion et Overton, pourquoi pas un petit stop à Snow canyon? C'est un parc superbe, sans trop de dénivelé. L'occasion de voir de jolies choses sans trop d'effort mais avec les sensations d'en avoir fait !
Mosey cave est très sympa je trouve. Peu d'effort finalement pour voir une jolie cascade. Kodachrome vraiment top ! Je vous recommande angel palace trail pour aller voir le sunset ! 🙂
Le matin du J6, vous pourriez visiter Bandelier NM, et aller à "White Rock overlook" qui permet d'admirer une très belle vue sur le Rio Grande (à l'extérieur du parc, au nord-est). Regarde le plan de gauche : https://www.nps.gov/band/planyourvisit/maps.htm

Maintenant que le projet a pris forme, je me penche sur la question 'bagages " : chaque fois que nous sommes allés dans l'Ouest , la t° prévue était ( très ) élevée, le soleil quasi assuré et les bagages - vêtements légers - légers .

Non, je n'ai pas mis notre parcours en ligne. Il est hyper-classique, rien que du vu et revu (sur le forum mais pas encore par nous 😇) On restera en Utah cette fois-ci avec effectivement, un passage par Moab.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
