Greece or Canary Islands for swimming and partying at the end of October?

Hi everyone!!

I’d love to get your opinions and advice on a destination. It’s actually for my 19-year-old son who wants to go to Greece with his cousin, who’s the same age. They’re looking at leaving on October 24th for 7 to 10 days. For their trip, they want gorgeous beaches where they can swim, beautiful typical villages and historic cities, stunning landscapes, but also lively spots for their nights out. In short, they’re not just going there to laze around—they want to make the most of it...

But here’s the thing: will the weather be too iffy at that time, especially for swimming? Also, would Crete be the best choice for what they’re looking for? Then, a travel agent suggested Tenerife instead because of the weather at that time of year—he said the climate there is the same all year round. But will they find landscapes and beaches as beautiful as in Crete?

Thanks in advance for your help

Good evening Why isn't he the one asking these questions? At 19, I was hitting the road to Kathmandu and didn’t ask my parents for their opinion or check the weather.

You didn’t have internet back then, and Minitel couldn’t help with this kind of question. 😛

Why this reply that’s useless to me? To try to give me a life lesson like on social media?

Well, I’ll respond to your rudeness: Because he wants to spend a week of vacation there, but without having to organize it (like many people who don’t know much about travel or simply don’t want to deal with it and go through agencies). My son asked me for this favor, and I’m happy to help him, especially since his job takes up his entire day from Monday to Saturday. It makes me happy as a father...

Because HE knows me well and knows all the trips I’ve already taken...

I found tons of useful information on this site about ten years ago for my self-planned trip to the United States, and it was a success thanks to many people here—but definitely not like you!!

Bye!!!

No, Minitel came much later... The beautiful landscapes, the charming typical villages, the stunning beaches, the historic cities, and the party spots—we kind of stumbled upon them by chance 😉

Hi there,

If your son can swim in Brittany in July, he should be able to swim in Crete or the Canary Islands at the end of October.

However, if he's looking for water above 24°C, forget the Mediterranean and the Canaries (expect around 20°C, maybe a tad warmer in the Canaries).

Tenerife is perfect for a first trip to the Canary Islands. Mount Teide offers some of the most exotic landscapes just a few hours from France. There are also some charming villages and nice towns. I’m not a big fan of beach resorts, but for a young person who wants to go out, it should be great.

The best approach is to pick one base in the north of the island and another in the south. Rent a car so you can get around everywhere.

I’ve got a travel journal on my blog about this destination.

(The beaches are much nicer in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, but you can’t have it all!)

If they have a passport, why not Morocco? (South of Marrakech for very mild temperatures.) The water will be chilly, though.

Or Egypt with a Red Sea combo for nightlife and swimming, plus Luxor for sightseeing and the Nile landscapes. The water temperature should be good there.

Hi there,

Greece can be a great destination, but you’ll want to head as far south as possible—think Crete or Rhodes. The weather is still really pleasant at that time of year, and the water has warmed up all summer, so you might even find it at 23°C. As for partying, in Greece, they party all year round. You’ll have no trouble finding bars and nightclubs.

But with today’s tools, if we can avoid traveling randomly and properly plan our trip thanks to helpful people on this forum, it can save us from some disappointments... otherwise, this forum wouldn’t be of any use!!!

Given that the climate isn’t the same year-round in the Canary Islands any more than it is in Crete, I guess the travel agent—who, by the way, has probably never set foot in either place in October—was just suggesting a destination that works better for them commercially.

After that, if you don’t want to spend a little time researching yourself, it’s true that only a "ready-made" package holiday will do.
