Hi there, We did a trip to South Africa in August 2023 and at the time, we regretted not being able to make the most of the Cape Town area because of the weather. So we’re thinking of going back during the right season in early 2026 for 2 weeks, but I’m struggling a bit to plan the itinerary. We’d like to spend a few days on safari, but options are somewhat limited in this (large) geographic area since it’s not the right season for KTP, and Addo Elephant Park doesn’t seem like the best choice. Are there any interesting private reserves in this area? Otherwise, we’re considering starting with a few days in Madikwe from Johannesburg, then about ten days from Cape Town. For those 10 days, do you have any suggestions that go beyond the classic Garden Route? We’ve heard good things about the Cederberg, but after that, I’m struggling to put together something coherent. Thanks for your suggestions! Jacques

Hi there,

Early 2026, which is the southern hemisphere summer. It’ll be very hot in KTP with a risk of thunderstorms. But it’s still a good time to see wildlife, and Augrabies might be at its best in February.

My travel journals might give you some ideas—especially this one combined with that one.

Instead of Addo, why not try Paternoster for a completely different vibe?

Both trips take place during the southern hemisphere summer.

Hi! I didn’t quite get your travel sketch. I’ve been to Madikwe—liked it. It’s a GR (Game Reserve). Have you considered Marakele? I’m heading there as a NP (National Park) in October. I visited it as a NP a loooong time ago. Did a GR stay there a loooong time ago too. And recently, Western Cape Karoo. At these dates, it’s scorching hot 🥵. I love Cederberg, especially Mount Ceder. Augrabies—I loved it, but in September. Not much water, but a stunning park. There’s even a new accommodation option the park’s pushing—seems great. Paternoster—I liked it too. WCNP (West Coast National Park) as well. Karoo NP at this time of year? Not sure. I saw my best wildlife spot ever there—black rhinos and lions! Anyway, With more details, I can help.

Thanks Agnes for your reply! I’ve already read your travel journals, but I’ll go through them carefully to try to find something coherent. Jacques

Thanks Michel for your feedback! I don’t know Marakele, I’ll look into it. The idea for the itinerary was to do a 3/4-day safari stop not too far from Johannesburg, then take a flight to Cape Town and do a 10-day loop, including 3/4 nights in Cape Town. I saw you’ve traveled a lot in the area, and I’d actually thought of Paternoster as a nice stop. Anyway, if I plan 3/4 nights in Cape Town and 2 nights in Cederberg, there aren’t many nights left... Ok I get it now Loop around Joburg for the wildlife and then head to the Western Cape That’s the plan, right? Madikwe Marakele Check out Welgevonden Then fly to CT Cederberg Paternoster WCNP Langebaan After that… It depends on timing Work out the details And let me know I’ve spent quite a bit of time in that area But with Cederberg and Paternoster like Mme Attila mentioned You’re on the right track
