Hi, just a quick note mainly for Samsong, even if he’s still giving me the silent treatment. I’ve been in Nan since yesterday and... I love it! So thanks, Thierry. It’s exactly the kind of place I’d been dreaming of... Even if communication is a bit tough, it’s not impossible. They don’t even know the most basic English words! Everyone laughs and they’re the first to pull out their phones to... translate. They’re even quicker on the uptake than I am. And then there’s the time I say Nan (pronounced "Nane"). They don’t understand me. After a while (sometimes a long one), they reply: "Ah, Nan?" (pronounced "Nane") 😵🤳😃

The town is exactly how you described it back in 2022. Though I’m surprised to find so many trendy, slightly intellectual "Cafés." Apparently, coffee—excellent everywhere—is king in Nan. It feels like a university town. And it seems pretty lively at night! But for now, I’m going to bed early. I caught a nasty cold, which didn’t stop me from walking 12 km this morning. But I came back to my accommodation by 3 PM (gorgeous and luxurious with top-notch service for 800 baht—even a cute local welcome gift this morning, plus other unexpected touches like a bottle of honey and chrysanthemum flowers for tea. The lady must’ve guessed I was coming down with something yesterday). I thought about going out for dinner but didn’t have the energy. I think I’ve got at least 39°C fever...

Anyway, I’m sending you this message, Thierry, because you mentioned a daily bus to Chiang Rai, so I didn’t look into it. But now it’s a real problem—no buses to Chiang Rai, only taxis. At least 2,500 baht for the cheapest one! I’ll check the bus station directly tomorrow. Online, it’s all taxis, no buses. I’d like to explore the countryside/mountains if I can find an affordable driver. Any ideas for destinations or itineraries? Thanks.

Bonjour, je pars 15 jours au nord du Vietnam fin février. J'arrive à Hanoï comme tout le monde ou presque (2j), puis après je pensais me rendre sur Car Ba, puis Ninh Binh et Mai chau. We’re heading to Vietnam in February as a family (2 adults and 2 kids) for 9 full days, and I was thinking of this itinerary:

Day 1: Hanoi Day 2: Halong Bay (Lan Ha) Day 3: Halong Bay (Lan Ha) Day 4: Hue Day 5: Danang Day 6: Danang Day 7: Hoi An Day 8: Hoi An/My Son Day 9: Hanoi

After reading almost all the discussions about Vietnam, I don’t see anything about transportation options for getting from Hue to Danang, then from Danang to Hoi An. Any ideas (train, bus)? From the map, it looks like Danang is close to Hoi An—easily accessible by taxi, right?

Also, after reading lots of comments and websites, I’ve noticed that Danang, aside from being a big developing city, seems to be more about hotels for relaxing on the beach—very laid-back, isn’t it? Not really a place to visit like Hanoi or Hoi An.

Generally speaking, if you have any recommendations for the itinerary or tips, I’d love to hear them.

Hello, We’ll arrive in Hanoi on April 17, 2025, and plan to head to the Northwest (Sapa region) and Northeast starting on April 20. How many days do you recommend for this trip? We’re two couples and a 4-year-old child. Should we book through an agency in Hanoi and do the circuit by van, or can we manage with buses—like an overnight bus from Hanoi to Sapa, then 2–3 days in the Sapa region, followed by a bus from Sapa to Ha Giang for a 3-day loop? Nous partons 9j dans le nord du vietnam du 11 au 20 février 2020 avec des enfants de 12 et 9ans et j'aurais voulu des conseils sur le circuit. J'ai bien conscience que ce n'est pas la meilleure période pour visiter le nord : froid et brume. J'avais pensé faire les classiques, sur 9j je vais avoir du mal à sortir des sentiers battus je pense : - 2j hanoi, - 2j baie d'along ; j'hésite à réserver avant de partir....vaut-il mieux que je m'adapte sur place en fonction du temps ? - 1j baie terrestre... - 2j sapa ? au vu de la période, est ce que ça vaut le coup ? je n'ai jamais vu de rizière ni les garçons...on m'a conseillé le topas eco lodge - 1j. montagne des parfums suis preneuse d'idées adaptées à cette saison. autre question : je suppose que la fête du têt sera terminée ?

Je souhaiterais aller de la Birmanie au Laos. En sachant que ma dernière destination en Birmanie est Mandalay, quel est le plus judicieux ? J'ai vu qu'il fallait passer par la Thaïlande mais avec plusieurs points : Bangkok ou Chiang Mai. En sachant que je ne veux pas retraverser la Birmanie, afin d'optimiser mon temps, je souhaite partir de Mandalay et idéalement arriver dans un endroit stratégique au Laos pas isolé de tout et où il y a des villes intéressantes à visiter dans les environs.

Hi, We’ve planned a week in the delta, but sometimes I wonder if that’s not too much… We’ll be there in early February, and the idea is to take a taxi straight from Saigon Airport to Ben Tre. I’m counting on 3 nights to recover and adjust after the long trip. Then I was thinking of Sadec, Can Tho, Chau Doc, Ha Tien, and back to Saigon for 3 nights before a flight to Hoi An. We’ve got 6 weeks total, so we have a bit of time. After reading different travel stories, the destinations in the delta seem a bit repetitive—I keep seeing the same excursions. On the other hand, I also think having time is a chance to get to know the local life a little better. My question really comes down to this: for those of you who travel at a relaxed pace, do you have any tips? I’ve heard the floating markets aren’t that interesting anymore. We’re traveling as a family of three adults for the holidays. After several iterations, here’s the itinerary we’re considering. We’d thought about including Bac Ha or Mai Chau, but in the end, we wanted to avoid excessive travel and rushing around. That’s not our style—we’d rather see less but have time to enjoy what we visit at a relaxed pace. We’ll definitely be back (in a better season) to see some of what we’ll miss this time. Just to note: we’re not motorbike riders, and we’re not the type to start our days at dawn and keep going until nightfall. We go at the pace of the day’s mood and energy. My questions: - Thoughts on the itinerary? - Ninh Binh: where’s the best place to stay to explore mostly on foot, by bike, or by taxi? - Cat Ba to Ninh Binh route: is it better to arrange it through one of our accommodations (departure or arrival) or handle it ourselves? - For the return day between Ninh Binh and Hanoi, I’d like to visit some sights rather than make a direct trip, since we’ll already spend enough time in Ninh Binh and Hanoi. I was thinking of the Perfume Pagoda and possibly Quang Phu Cau. But we’d need a car for the day. Is it better to organize in advance or on the spot? In Hanoi or Ninh Binh? Any driver recommendations? Price ideas? Other suggestions for things to see along the way?

Eh oui, on n'arrête pas le progrès ! Il se déroulera dans les rues de Hanoi. Date TENTATIVE (pas encore sûre) : 5 avril 2020. Inutile de dire que trouver une chambre d'hôtel ne sera pas facile, donc je recommnade à ceux qui préparent leur voyage à vérifier de temps en temps si une date définitive a été fixée.

Hi everyone, I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.

Hi fellow travelers! I’m planning a little 3-week trip to Vietnam in mid-to-late March. It’ll probably be the only time I can go. I enjoyed Thailand but clearly preferred Laos—it was calmer. For Vietnam, I don’t have a precise idea of what I want to see yet, and I’m the type to improvise a bit once I’m there. I’m not super adventurous but I’m curious, and I prefer street food over restaurants, markets and off-the-beaten-path villages over big attractions. But I don’t want to miss the must-sees either. So, given that I’ll only be there for 3 weeks, I’m wondering: should I absolutely stick to either the north or the south? Or is it possible to have a nice, not-too-hectic trip by spending, say, one week in the south and two in the north?... (I’d take a multi-city flight for arrival and departure) What do you think? En juillet 2020, nous partons à Ho Chi Minh pour le travail. Ensuite, nous comptons nous rendre à Hanoi d'où nous reprenons le vol international. Nous quitterons Ho Chi Minh ville an avion le samedi matin (ou vendredi soir) pour arriver à Hanoi d'où nous repartirons le mercredi soir. Nous avons dans l'idée de faire une excursion à la baie de Halong durant une journée et voudrions également voir des rizières en terrasse et se balader dedans. Pensez-vous qu'il est possible et raisonnable de faire ce programme en si peu de temps? Nous n'avons pas encore réservé notre vol intérieur donc nous pouvons aussi atterir à un autre endroit plus proche d'une rizière pour n'avoir qu'un trajet vers Hanoï à faire. Quel itinéraire proposeriez vous ? Quel est le moyen de transport à privilégier sachant que nous voyagerons à deux femmes et que nous sommes non-conductrices, tenant compte que ce sera la saison des pluies? A Ho Chi Minh nous avons deux week-ends de libre, nous en consacrerons un pour le delta du Mekong et n'avons encore rien de prévu pour l'autre, y aurait-il des rizières en terrasse dans la région?

bonjour, nous partons souvent en fevrier mars avec nos enfants 6 et 9 ans, et cette année nous envisageons le vietnam. Je suis hesitante car j'ai dans l'idée que ce pays est tres touristique et qu'on se fait un peu "harceler", et je ne sais pas s'il y a des chouettes coins tranquilles ou se poser au bord de la mer. nous partons généralement un mois , et alternons visites historiques, rando nature et farniente aquatique. Nous preferons les coins tranquilles au luxe, les bungalows en bambou ou logements chez l'habitant aux hotels , et si nous sommes un peu timides dans nos relations aux gens, nous aimons nous balader simplement sans trop se faire remarquer, plus observer. Quel sont vos experiences de ce pays ? ou d'autres suggestions de destinations pour lesquelles la saison serait adaptée ? ( avec les enfants nous sommes deja partis aux philippines, à cuba , au sri lanka, au bresil et en guadeloupe à la meme epoque, avec un gros coup de coeur pour les philippines, et le bresil - mais on est timides pour y retourner car la periode politique est pas idéale....). Bonsouar les routards, comme déjà explicitement évoqué dans le titre j'ai le doux rêve de partir à l'aventure jusqu'au Vietnam à compter de janvier prochain. Moyens de transports : train, bus, stop...

L'idée serait de tracer une ligne (à peu près droite) de la Belgique au Kazakhstan pour ensuite piquer vers l'Inde pour finir cap à l'ouest sur le Vietnam... Ça c'est vraiment le gros du gros, juste pour vous donner une idée quand vous regarderez une carte.

Là où j'aimerais vos conseils serait sur la faisabilité d'un tel trip sans avion, en janvier (aglagla!) et donc avec tout l'équipement qui irait avec... Et sur les retours d'expériences des pays traversés si vous avez :)

(Budget 10.000euros avec volonté de vivre au plus simple donc pas d'hotel ni de train de luxe!!)

Hi everyone, I’ve got a big project in northern Vietnam—discovering the most beautiful rice terraces before the harvest... I’m planning to leave around September 15th until October 15th, then spend 15 days exploring the two bays, Lan Ha and Ha Long. In total, 45 days without a visa... I’m traveling solo and very independent. But is it possible to do this kind of trip using local trains and buses? My plan is to leave Hanoi for Nghia Lo (2 days), then Mu Cang Chai (4 days), Sapa (4 days), Bac Ha (2 days), Ha Giang... Hoang Su Phi, then do the Meo Vac loop, Dong Van, etc., to see those stunning karst peaks before heading back to Hanoi. In my research, I haven’t found any buses or vans going from Hanoi to Nghia Lo, even though it’s super popular for its rice terrace landscapes.... I don’t want a daily driver, but I’m thinking I could use moto-taxis to get around locally once I’m there.... What do you think? These rice terraces are a dream for me, along with the markets and all the different ethnic groups, not to mention those spectacular rocky peaks... Is the itinerary too ambitious? I’ve got time on my side. Do you have any solutions? I’ve browsed the forum a lot, but the discussions are 5 or 6 years old, and I think things have changed since then. En fin d'année je pense partir 3 mois en road trip et la fin de mon road trip devrait coincider avec mon anniversaire (mes 35 ans). J'ai envie de fêter cela comme il se doit et j'aimerais faire quelque chose dont je me souviendrais longtemps mais je ne sais pas quoi ...

Je n'ai pas envie d'une immense fête, ni de quelque chose comme un saut en parachute (par exemple) parce que je ne trouve pas ça original et en plus j'ai peur du vide.

Je pense faire 1 mois par pays (ou peut-être plus, on verra) mais donc sur le principe je ne suis pas encore décidé sur le 3ème pays. Je n'ai pas un budget "luxe" donc ça veut dire que soit je reste plus longtemps au Vietnam ou aux philippines ou alors je vais dans un pays où je ne vais pas payer 300e (pour l'exemple) le billet.

Auriez vous une idée d'un pays dans le coin où l'on peut faire quelque chose de vraiment unique et mémorable ?

Des recommendations ? Mieux vaut Booker sur place ou via une Agence à Hanoi ? (j'ai trouvé une pour 135$ 2 jours 1 Nuit depuis Hanoi. Deuxième chose j'aimerai faire les montagnes au nord autour de HakGiang dont 2 jours à Sapa) pour environ 5 jours. Des recommendations ? Est-ce faisable en bus ? J'ai vu qu'on pouvait réserver les bus sur le site internet 12GO.Asia. Avez vous utiliser ce site et qu'en avez vous pensé ? Y a t-il une grosse différence de prix avec une agence locale ? Est-ce utile de réserver à l'avance ? Comme nous devons respecter un timing serré je ne voudrai pas me trouver bloquée à un endroit, faute de bus. Merci de vos retours !
