Hello fellow cycle-tourers! First post on this site for our first big family cycling adventure with our two teens (12 and 16 years old) over 2 months. We're preparing to leave in June/July from Erdeven by bike, then take the train from Auray to Paris, followed by a FlixBus from Paris to Copenhagen with our 4 bikes. After that, we're looking to refine our route: Should we go to Sweden via Helsingborg and then head up to Stockholm along the west or east coast? Maybe passing through the Gotland islands, then via the Åland Islands, why not Turku? Then off to Estonia to Tallinn, ride a bit along the coast, and return by bus if we can find one that takes 4 bikes. :))

Could you share any tips on routes in Sweden: west coast or east coast to prioritize in the south? We’ve heard it’s a shame not to go up to Norway, but we’re worried about the elevation and don’t see how to make a loop work in our 2 months / 1500 km. Any ideas? And the southern Finnish coast: should we go all the way to Helsinki or not? Maybe at the expense of Estonia?

In short, we know choosing means giving something up, but if we can do it with advice from fellow cyclists, that would be amazing! Thanks in advance for your tips! Anne-Sophie and the whole Breton family: David, Axel, and Maude

Good evening

Four bikes on FLIXBUS—make sure you check carefully, it can get pretty tight if the bus is packed! If there’s an external bike rack, that’s okay, but sometimes they subcontract and the buses are smaller. I haven’t had great experiences: drivers weren’t very accommodating. That said, it was a few years ago, so I should give it another try with a bike trip from Aix-en-Provence to Nice. I don’t want to discourage you at all, but do plan this part well. Have a fantastic journey! Serge

We booked a bus where we can take our 4 bikes (apparently they can fit up to 5 bikes on the external luggage racks). We’ll see how it goes on the day!

Hello, Just a heads-up—the Swedish train company doesn’t take bikes, or at least that was the case last time we were there. Anyway, double-check before you go. Otherwise, it’s a shame to skip Norway—it’s, in my opinion, the most interesting Nordic country. And what a shame to miss out on the midnight sun!!! Southern Sweden and the island of Gotland, Finland, and the Baltic countries are pretty monotonous to cycle through, but these are just my personal impressions from quite a while ago. It *is* flat, though. . . Watch out for Finland’s small roads—they’re not paved, and it’s up and down constantly. Patrick

I went to Sweden last year, and FlixBus buses allow bikes to be transported on external racks. Just like you, start from Copenhagen to Helsingør, then take the ferry to Sweden. I recommend the wilder east coast, following the shoreline toward Landskrona (castle), Malmö, Ystad, Vaby (Gamla Bron, the country’s oldest bridge from 1863), the island of Öland by boat (very rough crossing), Borgholm (castle), Sandvik (windmill turned into a restaurant), ferry back to the mainland at Byxelkrok, Stegeborg (castle ruins - ferry), Söderköping (Göta Canal). Don’t forget to download an app about shelters (free cabins for bivouacking).

Hi there, we're planning a similar family trip next summer. Could you share your itinerary and any tips with us? Jean-Baptiste

Hi there,

We wandered around that area in 2022 (Denmark, Sweden, and a small part of Norway for the Nordic countries). We really loved Denmark, the southwest coast of Sweden, and Oslo. You can find our route and a few posts on our blog, as well as the link to our travel video: https://2020lagrandeaventure.travel.blog/ Don’t hesitate to ask if you have more questions!

Here’s the route we took: https://www.polarsteps.com/LetsGoBaltique We brought our bikes by train and then bus to Copenhagen... then cycled Denmark-Sweden-Finland-Estonia and returned by bus with a stop in Warsaw... 2000 km in 2 months, with quite a few ferry crossings too. A beautiful, nature-filled family adventure! The countries are super bike-friendly and the wild camping spots are amazing. On the downside: don’t expect to meet many locals, and the cost of living is pretty high (food especially—quality isn’t always great, as we Frenchies who love fresh, healthy food can attest! :)). Better to know ahead of time, but once you do, you adapt and enjoy all the other positives!

Thanks to both of you for your replies and your travel journals—super inspiring for starting to plan our route. For now, we’re thinking of crossing Belgium and the Netherlands, then taking a train to Denmark, followed by Denmark and Sweden. After that, we’d head north from Stockholm (bus? train? ferry?) to reach northern Norway.
