ANA, JAL, EVA Air, and Cathay Pacific: Weight checks?

Hello, are there any airlines (we're not talking about low-cost here!) that actually check the weight of carry-on luggage? Most airlines set a limit of 10 kg (per bag or total—it’s never clear, especially since you can usually have a backpack plus a handbag), but EVA Air & Cathay Pacific (along with most Chinese airlines) only allow 7 kg…!!

That’s a ridiculous weight for me—my bag usually weighs around 11 kg. I mentioned ANA & JAL because the Japanese are very strict about rules, so if any airline enforces these checks, they’d be the first to do it… but maybe I’m wrong! Share your thoughts if you’ve flown with these airlines (or others, especially outside the continent) often. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi there,

I’ve flown all these airlines and they’ve never weighed my carry-on luggage. I always have a backpack with some stuff in it and a laptop, so that’s two pieces. Just keep it reasonable and don’t show up with a second suitcase as a carry-on. 😉

I had a few questions about EVA Air, so I’m sharing my experience here. For the return flight from Bali, EVA Air had noted on the ticket that there was no terminal change in Taipei, but actually, there was one. However, with the shuttle, it was very quick—we took 45 minutes from getting off the plane to reaching the next departure gate, which was enough time. They weighed the carry-on luggage when leaving Bali. They allowed a bit over 7 kg (we had up to 7.5 kg). I also had a small backpack to put under the seat, plus my winter clothes in a pocket that could pass as a pillow. That’s all.
