Cycling the Lot and Célé Valleys

Hi there,

Last summer, I cycled through the Lot and Célé Valleys. There were two couples of us, in "camping mode," with hybrid bikes (except for one road bike with tires that weren’t hybrid at all (!) plus a Bob trailer). We completed the route in the first half of July in just under 15 days (allowing time to explore along the way). The odometer totaled 550 km. We started in Aiguillon on the Lot River and finished in Saint-Geniez-d’Olt. It was an absolute delight. First off, a big thank you to everyone who helped us plan this trip by sharing tips, favorite spots, and practical guides—there were many, and some will recognize themselves (a Jakez from Brittany, a local postman, etc.). A major project seemed to have been launched, but since 2011, not much has materialized beyond Cahors (a signposted cycle route). Don’t let that stop you—it’s totally worth it! In return for the great tips we received, I’m happy to help anyone considering the same route with details on the itinerary, stages, road conditions and traffic, campsites, highlights, and more. Best regards,

Pierre from Lorient

Hi there, and thanks Pierre! I think the Célé Valley and Figeac haven’t been overlooked—the Lot is a truly stunning route. Keep up the good work, Jacques.

Hello,

Thanks for your message. I’m looking for the same kind of itinerary but more on trails and tracks than on roads. Do you have any tips or contacts that could help me plan a route in this area? Thanks in advance, Marianne

Hi there,

The route we took is mostly on roads—small, low-traffic shared roads—with some paths, occasional towpaths, and greenways mixed in. It might be possible to do the whole thing off-road, but you’d need a mountain bike (which we didn’t have). Check out hiking trails like GR and PR routes, but be careful not to take paths that are exclusively for walkers—it wouldn’t be very considerate to the many hikers on foot! It’s still a good idea to contact the tourist offices, as they have lots of info on this. You can see our route on the ABbike forum—it’s a recent post about the Lot. Best, Pierre

The Lot and Célé Valleys are a true paradise. Since I don’t live far away, I go back every year. Another valley worth exploring, which is pleasant but different from the Lot Valley, is the Dordogne Valley from Argentat to Branne, south of Libourne. It’s not signposted, but with a simple road map, it’s easy to plan your route along the back roads. I live in this valley in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, so it’s my daily stroll spot...

Hi, is there a way to do a loop through the Lot and Célé Valleys on quiet back roads without missing the scenic spots? Thanks

The roads in this region let you follow the valleys where no trails exist, and since these valleys are usually very beautiful, it’s often the best scenery you’ll get when cycling through them.

Hi everyone, so here’s the thing—I’m thinking of doing this route starting in May this year. If you’ve got any tips on camping or bivouacking, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks in advance

There’s a website:

https://www.francevelotourisme.com/itineraire/la-vallee-du-lot-a-velo

500 km from Aiguillon to La Canourgue.

At the bottom of the page, you can download the route in GPX format.

It includes suggested stages.

For each stage, you’ll find possible accommodations along the way and restaurants.

happy cycling!

I forgot about accommodation

The randocamping site (too bad it doesn’t include hotels or guest rooms)

Thanks so much for the stages—I’m not planning anything after that. I’d love to do the Célé and then head down to the Cirque de Navacelles. After that, we’ll see...
