Are there flights arriving in Urgench and returning from Tashkent?

Hello, As a senior woman, I’m planning a 3-week solo trip (late April or early May) to explore the country by public transport, visiting the main cities (Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand), the Ferghana Valley, and if possible, the Aral Sea. I’m reaching out to the community to see if there are flights arriving in Urgench and returning from Tashkent—or the other way around? Thanks in advance to anyone with insights! 😉

Hi Nicole, I looked up multi-destination flights on the Uzbekistan Airways website, flights that might be on promotion: Outbound: Paris to Tashkent on Tuesdays and Fridays in April and May Return: Urgench to Paris on Fridays in April and May

Another option: Turkish Airlines with a layover in Istanbul, flights every day but more expensive

From Urgench, you can visit what’s left of the Aral Sea—that is, Mo‘ynoq via Nukus. From Tashkent, you can do a round trip to the Fergana Valley.

In my humble opinion, it’d be better to go to Tashkent first: it’ll immediately immerse you in the country’s atmosphere.

Wishing you great preparations for this country where the people are so welcoming! Françoise Another senior who also traveled solo in this country using public transport

Hi there,

We traveled to Uzbekistan/Kyrgyzstan in June 2024, arriving in Urgench and returning from Bishkek with Turkish Airlines (layover in Istanbul). Returning from Tashkent would’ve been no problem either.

We did a very classic train circuit, passing through Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand.

The country is really easy to visit despite the language barrier.

You can even book and pay for trains in advance online from France.

Hi there, With Turkish Airlines, you can fly from Paris to Tashkent via Istanbul: https://www.turkishairlines.com/en-int/flights/booking/availability-international?cId=0270b9d8-8236-4c0f-bd7c-f2c955afdb9e

Have a great trip!

I’m now connected... Here are my flight tickets booked with arrival in Urgench on April 18 and return from Tashkent on May 9. Since I’m traveling solo for these 3 weeks, I’m trying to check train availability based on my itinerary (I’d prefer trains for the time savings and comfort compared to buses), but I find it really complicated: either the site is in Russian or payments are in soms... Which site did you use? How far in advance? And payment in euros???

Did you visit the Aral Sea disaster? That’s where I want to go, along with a few days in the Fergana Valley...

Thanks for your reply

Thanks for these details, Françoise.

I’m reachable now! We really do travel the same way. I’ve booked my flight tickets—arriving in Urgench on April 18 and returning from Tashkent on May 9.

Over my 3 weeks, yes, I’m planning to start with the haunting Aral Sea from Nukus for 2 days to see as much as possible, given the long distances on rough roads... Would you recommend it?

Otherwise, I’m struggling to find a site to book/pay for train tickets between the major cities from France . Any tips?

At the end of my trip, I’ll also spend a few days in the Fergana Valley.

Any advice on some great hikes (with a guide, of course)?

I’m finally back online... Thanks for the info—I found direct flights to Urgench and return from Tashkent with Uzbekistan Airways (only during peak season).

Hi Nicole,

For train tickets, the official website is https://railway.uz/en/ You need to enter a departure and arrival destination, then click on "Find Tickets," and you’ll be automatically redirected to a page for purchasing the tickets themselves. Once purchased, we printed our tickets and had no issues. Be careful with the train configuration when choosing seats. I think it wasn’t possible to book more than 3 months before the train’s departure date. I initially thought the trains were fully booked… but they weren’t.

We didn’t go all the way to the Aral Sea since we only spent 10 days in the country. Aside from the Fergana Valley area (which we didn’t visit), the landscapes are desert-like and generally flat.

Have a great trip!

Thanks Bananette

Yep, I’ve finally booked the train tickets for my route easily... I still want to spend 2 days at the Aral Sea... to be continued.

Hi, I’m traveling in May and booked a Paris-Tashkent flight, then a second flight 4 hours later from Tashkent to Nukus. It’s cheaper than a direct Paris-Urgench flight. From Nukus, I’ll figure out how to take a bus or shared taxi to Moynaq. In Nukus, you’ll need to go to the Zhydeli Baysin bus station—departures are between 9 and 10 AM, 4-hour trip, 200 km. My itinerary: Nukus-Moynaq-Khiva-Bukhara-Samarkand-Shakhrisabz-Tashkent

Hi Bruno, My post about flights is a bit outdated now, and I've got my tickets for direct Paris-Urgench flights and a return from Tashkent-Paris to reduce my carbon footprint ;)! I found them cheaper than flights with layovers... Otherwise, I’m definitely planning to visit the Aral Sea for 2 days. Thanks for the bus info for Nukus-Moynaq (ship graveyard). I’ll see when I’m there to book a 4x4 to get as close as possible, with yurt accommodation. Continuing to the main cities: Khiva-Bukhara-Samarkand, then 3 days in the Ferghana Valley before Tashkent and my return to Paris. How many days is your trip planned for?

Happy preparations!!

Good evening. I’m surprised—I booked train tickets from France without any issues for 3 people (Tashkent/Kokand, Margilan/Tashkent, Tashkent/Samarkand) and a night train return from Khiva to Tashkent. The payment is shown in sums, and then you see the price in euros when your bank deducts it. I checked the UZrailway site, which I’d mentioned in another post. You can run simulations there to choose schedules and trains: Afrosiyob, Sharq, Uzbekistan, and the night trains. You just need to register (name, surname, passport number...). Hope this helps—happy to exchange more! Martine

Hi I’m not sure which message you’re referring to, Martine, because I replied to Bananette on March 26th saying I’d bought my train tickets... no problem at all.

Have a great day

Hi, Could you let me know the price of your flight ticket? I’m planning the same trip in April 2026. Brigitte

Hi, I booked the tickets on the Uzbekistan Airlines website, 92 € per person, morning flight at 7 AM.

Hello, may I ask you the price of your flight ticket? I’m planning the same trip in April 2026. Brigitte

Hi Brigitte, Sorry for the late reply—I’m currently in Stockholm... From what I remember, my flights (18/4 to 09/05, booked with Uzbekistan Airways, which is a good airline) cost 900 € round-trip, with extra insurance on the outbound leg. Now that I’m back, I’d actually recommend the opposite route: Paris–Tashkent and Urgench–Paris (Urgench isn’t served year-round). Have you made any progress with your plans?... Happy planning!

It was obviously a Tashkent-Nukus flight. For the Paris-Tashkent flight via Baku with Azerbaijan Airlines, 754 €

Hi Nicole, I also want to thank you, though a bit late since I was away for a while.

Hi there,

Just wanted to chip in with my experience. In September 2023, I had an outbound flight Brussels-Istanbul-Samarkand and a return flight Urgench-Istanbul-Brussels with Turkish Airlines (code-share with Uzbekistan Airways) for 640 €.

Tashkent is completely avoidable, so this is a good alternative route. And instead of Tashkent, FYI, from Samarkand, you can spend a day in the beautiful mountains of Tajikistan, near Penjikent.

And for a little anecdote, I had a delay of over 3 hours on the return flight, but without any real consequences. As a result, I received compensation of 435 € based on Turkish regulations. Don’t hesitate to book the shortest layover in Istanbul if there are many flights—this way, with a bit of luck, you might miss your connection but get rebooked on the next flight without too much hassle, and possibly even get some welcome compensation! 😄
TA Tatra Globetrotter ·
Hi Manuel,

And for the record, I had a delay of over 3 hours on the way back, but without any real consequences. As a result, I received compensation of 435 € based on Turkish regulations.

Why not based on European regulations? They were more favorable, weren’t they?

That said, it’s still a bit of a risky game; if your destination is Brussels or Amsterdam, there are plenty of flights to rebook you on, but if it’s a city that isn’t served daily, it’s less advantageous. If you consider taking the train instead, you’ve also lost out—easily 100 € for the ticket you bought and another 100 € for the new one you’d have to purchase. And then, having to wait 6 or 8 hours in the world’s most expensive airport without lounge access can end up costing a lot. But hey, if you want to...

Michel
MA Manudcn ·
European regulations don’t apply when you’re coming from outside Europe with a non-European airline (Europe = EU + CH, NO, and IS).

Like I said, in my case, there weren’t any consequences. I was returning by train with my pass—I can take whichever one I want. Thanks to the compensation, I got a free meal at the airport, something I wouldn’t have had otherwise. And with so many flights to Brussels, my layover was short—I didn’t even have time to explore the airport. Istanbul is the worst airport I’ve ever set foot in, but from Brussels to Uzbekistan, there aren’t any other options.

In the end, I’m really happy with a flight that only cost me 205 €.
NI Nicoreve ·
Hi Manuel, Thanks for your details and comments, but my post is old and I already took this trip last spring from Urgench to Tashkent via Nukus and the Fergana Valley. Happy future travels to you...
