I haven’t forgotten Patrick-Yangguizi either, and I’m also thinking of his family.

Hi Fred71, hi everyone.

Thank you for this tribute to Patrick.

The community has lost a great forum member, a writer in his spare time (which was plentiful), and also an avid reader, as he never hesitated to jump into countless discussions, always with his humor and sharp wit.

My thoughts go out to his family, his loved ones, and those for whom Patrick’s absence leaves an indelible mark in their memories.

a thought for Patrick and his family,

we’re thinking of him even if, for some of us, we only knew him through his posts here

If I have one criticism to make... it's that you're no longer here. :(

....I hope that, wherever he is, he was able to follow Kim Jong-il's funeral.........

Yes, we miss him. Personally, last week I recommended reading his travel journal to someone who was asking me about Iran. Thanks to François for keeping our discussions about Patrick going.

January 16, 2005, Patrick started his amazing account of his trip to North Korea, and today I often reread his wonderful writings, full of humor, details, and all those traces of Patrick who is still in our memories. And I hope that wherever he is, he can buy Kim pins and listen to North Korean military music over a good meal served by pretty young waitresses. Mom isa

Lovely message, MamanIsa

I reread his travel journal on North Korea—still just as much style, humor, and wit, and at the same time, a well of knowledge.

Hats off to the artist! ;)

August 4, 2012 at 4:23 AM Re: "Grandma Champollion" by emergency physician Patrick Pelloux Thanks Danielle for your message. What’s amazing is finding a text by Yangguizi on this anniversary, with a link right below Danielle’s message to remind us how much Patrick respected and encouraged all travelers, and how he admired Grandma Champollion’s tenacity in continuing her journey. Rest in peace, Patrick—you’ll keep inspiring our dreams for a very long time.ClemAlex

Yeah, sad anniversary—time flies way too fast, but the memories stay! You’d have loved seeing North Korea thumbing its nose at everyone those first few days of the Olympics. My next trip to Shanghai will definitely include the temple you showed me! Thanks!

Patrick, so far away already... yet still so close and unforgettable.
UN UnaMilanese Veteran ·
Hello,

unforgettable.

Yes.

His memory is indelibly linked to:

1/ *Water Music* by TC Boyle. I had stopped reading it a few pages from the end, not feeling up to seeing Mungo Park die in Africa that day. When I opened VF, a message from Kars had informed me of Patrick’s passing, in Africa. Since then, whenever I pick up the book from the shelf and laugh while rereading excerpts, I think of "Yangguizi," imagining that Boyle’s humor would have resonated with him.

2/ Nice. It was a completely insignificant city. Now, whenever I drive along its ring road, I mentally lay a flower on his grave.

Four years ago feels like yesterday, yet it’s an eternity. See you someday under different skies.
