Flying with a knee brace

Hi there,

This might be a silly question, but I’m traveling to Japan from CDG and returning via Osaka with EVA Air, and I have a pretty bulky aluminum knee brace. It’s this model: https://enovis-medtech.eu/fr_FR/OA-FullForce-74358.html

Has anyone had any experience with airport security checks or flying with one of these?

Thanks in advance! Best regards,

hi, you need to report it just before going through the security screening gates and tell the airport staff. The airport agent will perform a special search. It’s essential because if you go through a detection gate, the electromagnetic waves emitted by the device on aluminum parts could hurt. So make sure to report it

Hi Caussat,

Different experience here—I’m not sure if it’ll help, but just in case!

I flew with a splint on my arm, but I could take it off and put it back on. Is that your situation too? I didn’t have it on during security checks, but I did on the plane. No issues at all.

I think what *doesn’t* work are full casts, because of pressure changes—they could cause swelling.

Best to check with your airline to be sure?

Thanks for your replies. Yes, she’s removing it. It’s just the worry that an overzealous person might consider it could be used as a striking object... The airline is vague on the subject, like: "Normally, it’s not a problem." It’s just that "normally" that bothers me...

Make sure to request assistance (it’s normally free) on their website before you leave as a "disabled" person—this should help you skip the check-in lines. I did this with EasyJet on a flight (I was on crutches), and it saved me a lot of hassle and waiting.
