HIGHWAY 1

Highway 1 runs along the Pacific coast of California from Leggett in the north to Dana Point in the south. It's the longest state route in California, stretching 1,050 km.

It's famous for its breathtaking ocean views. That’s actually why it’s become such a popular route for road trips, with tons of attractions and points of interest all along the way.

After crossing the U.S. interior on our way out (see Road Trip USA 2023 - Part 1), we’re starting our return trip along this route from Leggett.

Videos are embedded throughout the summary. Please click on the image to start the video. To jump to a specific post, here are the appropriate links:

The Pudding Creek Trestle Bridge is located on Highway 1 in Fort Bragg, California. Built in 1915, it was first used to transport timber to the Fort Bragg mill until 1949.

When this railway line was closed, the railroad bridge was reinforced and converted into a haul road to allow logging trucks—banned from public roads—to pass through.

Left unmaintained, it had weakened over the years. However, it was restored by California State Parks and is now part of the Ten Mile Trail, which runs through MacKerricher State Park and connects Glass Beach to Ten Mile Beach.

It has become a popular attraction for pedestrians and cyclists, offering scenic views of the area.

We took a short loop hike starting at this bridge, leading to the top of the cliff on the right side of the beach.

We spotted different bird species and enjoyed lovely viewpoints of the bridge and Pudding Creek Beach below.

We backtracked and noticed a small trail leading down to the beach.

So, we took that path to explore the beach and crossed the bridge again to return to our starting point.

Across from the parking lot, there’s a trail along the cliff edge that also offers stunning views of the bridge, the beach, and the steep cliffs lining the coastline.

Since the beach is flat, ocean waves roll in, creating a small stream that flows along the cliff.

Glass Beach is located at the northern end of MacKerricher State Park, just west of downtown Fort Bragg in California.

As the name suggests, the sand on this beach is made up of smooth, multicolored sea glass pebbles.

These come from household and industrial waste that was once dumped along the coastline by local residents.

Over the years and through the action of the waves, the sharp edges of these debris have worn down, forming the sea glass pebbles you can see today on this beach.

In addition to observing these iconic pebbles, the site is perfect for exploring tide pools where you can spot sea stars, hermit crabs, anemones, and more, or take a walk along the coastline to admire the sunset at the end of the day.

You’ll understand that dogs are not allowed on this beach.

Swimming in the ocean near Goat Rock isn’t possible because the waves are too dangerous.

However, since this beach is a sandbar that extends into the ocean, you can swim in the river that runs along the other side of the beach.

You can even rent kayaks in Jenner and paddle up the river to reach this beach.

The section of the trail just above the beach may have a steep slope or be washed out due to high tides eroding the path.

It sits at the base of red sand dune cliffs that date back 120 million years.

POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE - ELEPHANT SEALS ON DRAKES BEACH

38.02804, -122.96163 Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center

Point Reyes National Seashore in California has several beaches where northern elephant seals gather in colonies.

The Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center, located near Drakes Beach, is one of the best spots in the area to observe elephant seals lounging on the beach. There’s plenty of parking available.

To protect them, the beach is seasonally closed to the public during the birthing and molting periods. However, you can still get really close to them.

Elephant seals are part of the seal family. Males develop a short trunk-like nose, which is how they got their name.

This trunk acts as a resonance chamber for their roars during the breeding season to scare off rivals who might try to mate with the same females.

A male can reach a size of 4 to 6 meters and weigh up to 2 tons, while a female can grow to 2.7 to 3 meters and weigh up to 800 kilograms.

It’s important to keep at least 7.5 meters (about 25 feet) between you and these elephant seals. Despite their appearance, they can move surprisingly fast.

POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE – TULE ELK OBSERVATION

We were thrilled to spot several herds of Tule elk in the Point Reyes National Seashore nature reserve in California.

They had practically disappeared by 1860. Fortunately, they were protected by the state. In 1978, two males and eight females were brought to the reserve and confined in a temporary enclosure so they could adapt to their new environment. They were later released into the reserve.

The 2000 census counted a population of over 400 elk. The population fluctuates over the years but remains one of the largest in California.

You can spot them in several areas of the reserve, such as along Drakes Beach Road and in the Phillip Burton Wilderness, west of Limantour Road.

However, Tomales Point is where you’re most likely to see them. They’re often spotted near the road.

The houseboats of Sausalito, a small town in California, are a must-see when visiting the San Francisco Bay Area.

Known as "Floating Homes" or "Houseboats," these waterfront homes were once inhabited in the 1960s and 1970s by artists and hippies.

Today, they’ve become private residences owned by wealthier folks, though they’ve kept their bohemian vibe.

Strolling along the docks is really pleasant. Each house is unique and creates a picturesque scene.

One of them, the Taj Mahal Houseboat or Floating Taj Mahal, stands out. It was built in the 1970s by a wealthy California winemaker who had traveled to India. It’s located at Yacht Club Harbor across from Johnson Street.

Driving from San Francisco to Sausalito (south to north) is free. However, there’s a toll in the opposite direction. For visitors, it’s recommended to pay the toll online.

A must-do when visiting San Francisco!

CRUISE TO ALCATRAZ ISLAND - SAN FRANCISCO

Alcatraz Island, located in San Francisco, California, is accessible year-round. The only way to get there and visit the prison is by taking a ferry offered by Alcatraz City Cruises, the only company authorized by the NPS to dock on the island.

These ferries depart from Pier 33 and take about fifteen minutes to reach Alcatraz Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay.

You must take the ferry that leaves at the time you chose. The time is even indicated on your ticket. Arrive about thirty minutes before the scheduled departure to avoid the ferry leaving without you!

Bring a warm layer for the crossing or the island visit, as the air can be quite chilly in the middle of the bay.

During the crossing, we enjoyed stunning views of the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge, as well as Alcatraz Island.

VISITING ALCATRAZ ISLAND - SAN FRANCISCO

Alcatraz is a military fort built during the Civil War on an island in San Francisco Bay, California.

The fort became a high-security federal prison from 1934 to 1963, housing some of the most famous inmates of the 20th century, like Al Capone, "Machine Gun" Kelly, and the "Birdman of Alcatraz."

Closed in 1963 for financial and structural reasons, it’s now one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco Bay.

The self-guided tour covers the prison’s history, failed escape attempts, daily life on the island, and testimonies from guards and former inmates.

During the visit, you’ll explore the entire cellblock, with its small concrete cells, the shower room, the recreation yard, the guards' quarters where their families also lived, and the remnants of the military-era batteries and cannons.

The site also offers stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline.

The Financial District is San Francisco’s business hub. It’s defined by a cluster of skyscrapers, some of which house the headquarters of major companies.

These modern buildings contrast with the Art Deco-style structures just a few blocks south.

The Transamerica Pyramid, the second-tallest skyscraper in San Francisco, is one of the city’s most iconic symbols.

*Language of the Birds* is a permanent art installation made up of several suspended sculptures that resemble open books. It’s located at the intersection of Columbus Ave and Broadway.

Each book is designed to look like a bird in flight, with wings arranged differently depending on the pages and bindings.

The mural (Jazz Mural) by Bill Weber, located behind this artwork, is absolutely stunning. It features famous musicians alongside fishermen.

There’s also another mural on a different side of the building, depicting a Chinatown scene and a dragon, which in China symbolizes good luck, prosperity, strength, wisdom, and protection.

Not far from there, at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Kearny Street, stands the Columbus Tower, a beautiful building constructed in 1907 that houses Cafe Zoetrope, owned by Francis Ford Coppola. You’ll find lots of filming memorabilia from his movies there.

Salesforce Tower, at 326 meters, is the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco. This sleek 61-story modern tower has a beautifully curved and tapered silhouette with rounded glass edges.

Sutro Baths is located north of Ocean Beach in San Francisco. This former aquatic complex was built in the mid-1890s by Adolph Sutro, a former mayor of San Francisco.

Built by the sea, this facility was intended for the city’s working class because the mayor wanted this health-focused attraction to be accessible to everyone.

The glass-roofed structure housed several saltwater and freshwater pools. It also included an amphitheater for concerts and art galleries. An ice-skating rink was even added in the 1930s.

Unfortunately, the economic crisis of the 1920s and the Great Depression led to a drop in attendance, resulting in the facility’s closure in 1965.

In 1966, a fire destroyed the building, and it was never rebuilt.

Trails of varying lengths start from the parking lot and lead to the ruins of Sutro Baths.

For our part, we did a loop hike of about 1.7 kilometers. We first went to the Point Lobos viewpoint, which offers a great view of the ruins and the coastline.

BISON PADDOCK - GOLDEN GATE PARK - SAN FRANCISCO

37.76970, -122.49822 Bison enclosure by the roadside 37.76958, -122.50013 Another spot to see them

The bison paddock is located in a small meadow at the western end of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

This area is home to a small herd of American bison, open to the public from sunrise to sunset.

The story goes that the city of San Francisco introduced its first bison herd in 1892 to help save the species from near extinction. At that time, fewer than 1,000 bison remained in North America.

Over the years, the park’s enclosure has enabled the reintroduction of over 100 calves into the wild and contributed to the recovery of the continental population, which now numbers several hundred thousand.

Portals of the Past is a small monument made up of white marble columns. It’s located on the shores of Lloyd Lake in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

Its Greco-Roman style gives it a serene and timeless atmosphere.

The story goes that much of the Nob Hill neighborhood was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and the fire that followed.

However, the entrance to railroad magnate A.N. Towne’s mansion managed to remain standing.

It was salvaged from the rubble and moved to Golden Gate Park as a symbol of San Francisco’s perseverance—working toward an optimistic future, no matter the tragedy of the past.

This site is accessible via the trail that circles Lloyd Lake. Entry is free.

St. Ann of the Sunset Church is a church located near Golden Gate Park. It was built in the early 1930s.

With its neo-Romanesque style, it stands out thanks to its massive central dome, twin towers, large rose windows, and the beautiful sculpted friezes adorning the church’s main façade.

Its striking beauty really catches your eye!

Strawberry Hill is a small island located near the center of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

It’s only accessible on foot, which is why we left our vehicle on the main road, Blue Heron Lake Drive, and crossed onto the island via one of the two century-old pedestrian bridges.

A trail loops around the artificial Blue Heron Lake, allowing us to discover some truly interesting sights.

The Blue Heron Lake Bridge, built in 1893, is a very photogenic stone bridge that overlooks the emerald-green waters of the lake.

The Golden Gate Chinese Pavilion is a beautiful Chinese pagoda gifted by Taipei, San Francisco’s sister city. It’s magnificently decorated with sculptures and an ornate roof.

Huntington Falls is a 33-meter artificial waterfall that cascades into the lake below. It’s named in honor of railroad magnate Collis Potter Huntington, who donated $25,000 for its construction.

If you make it to the top of the island, you’ll find another small lake.

During our hike, we spotted several species of seabirds as well as turtles.

The area is perfect for walking, jogging, or having a picnic in a charming and peaceful setting.

You can also rent paddleboats and rowboats near the boathouse.
