What if your next travel agent was an artificial intelligence?

The chosen title was easy to find: it's from today's French daily newspaper "Le Figaro" (front page, right side, in the "Le Flash actualité" section at 10:31 AM). Link: https://www.lefigaro.fr/voyages/et-si-votre-prochain-agent-de-voyage-etait-une-intelligence-artificielle-20250414

As some participants had mentioned, a simple query could sometimes yield very satisfying results, even if the initial comments from readers of this article don’t necessarily agree.

Instead of presenting our request in writing, I assume we’ll soon be able to speak to AI orally or even have a conversation with it. Refining our searches to perfection would then be a breeze.

But then, what about travel agencies and travel forums? Will Vfistes, in a twilight atmosphere, keep talking in a closed circle, fewer and fewer of them, until the last one is left monologuing? Will a side effect be that we start addressing our fellow humans in the same cold, dry way we talk to the Machine? Well, some of us have already gotten into that habit... With over 30% of current jobs set to disappear because of AI, will it become possible to quickly and perfectly plan trips we can no longer afford financially? What a paradox!

I admit I haven’t looked into this yet, and one of these days I’ll probably end up talking to the Machine, but for now, I prefer to keep laboriously and methodically planning my upcoming trips, telling myself that at least I’m still good for something...

Hi Joël. I think unfortunately for me, the matter is already settled. I’m simultaneously in travel-prep mode for two destinations and I’ve succumbed to the easy siren call of AI (ChatGPT, in this case). It’s precise, tailored, fast. Everything’s there and can be tweaked in 15 seconds. - But that doesn’t stop me from cross-checking the info—my trust in it has its limits pretty quickly.

And since I was my own travel agent, the AI won’t take bread from anyone’s table—just save me time.

As the end of the *Le Figaro* article puts it: “For independent travelers looking for simplicity and efficiency, the AI assistant is gradually becoming an obvious choice.”

In the end, I agree with you—it’s not a great sign for the survival of a forum like this one, but we’ve seen since the reopening that AI isn’t the only culprit. Have a good day.

PS: It’s been ages since I’ve written anything *to* the AI—it listens without getting annoyed! PS: 30% disappearing means 70% remains!

Following up on your post, I installed ChatGPT and asked it to create a self-drive trip to Tanzania for me.

For practical info (visa, etc.), it replaces a guidebook. For the itinerary, it’s a bit more laborious. You really need to know what you want and what you don’t. The first suggestions tend to be unoriginal.

I think, for now, it’s good for the practical stuff.

But for a custom trip, it doesn’t beat a human expert. It also lacks personal anecdotes and real-life experience.

What amused me was that it recommended the rental company I’d already chosen!

An extra tool alongside others, I’d say. At least for now.

Specialized agencies can still relax. Mass tourism, a little less so.

hi wow, the sheep of Panurge 😉 This tool is completely useless. What’s likely to happen is that it’ll lead to over-tourism and overcrowding in places like Venice, Barcelona, etc. From what I know—though this stat might be confirmed or not—95% of tourists visit only 5% of the world’s destinations. Don’t you think, Mr. Jojoone, that traveling isn’t about following your instincts and gut feeling? Then, regarding ChatGPT, I asked a very specific question about the area around Tikal, and all it suggested was to hire a guide. Well, that’s not really helpful then...

Overtourism didn't wait for AI to spread, even if it definitely won't help reduce it. That said, depending on your requests, AI *can* help you avoid the hotspots...

If 95% of people visit just 5% of places, that means 95% of places are empty! (This stat holds true on our ski slopes in winter, but that's not the point.)

And you said it yourself: "I asked a very specific question." We agree—AI isn’t really made for that...

yeah, yeah, and that’s actually a good thing. There are so many places to explore on Earth, and it’s really frustrating. One lifetime isn’t enough :)

Frustrating? So many places left to explore—exhilarating!!

a recommendation from me: in no case can an artificial intelligence system replace the advice of an expert or specialist. In short, for professional or critical purposes, use this tool sparingly. What I’m saying, I can’t say for sure, but it seems Mr. Trump used this tool to implement new political measures. We can see what a disaster that leads to 🤪

Agreed, it's not made for that...

If someone asks a question the way they do on VF, there’s actually little chance of getting a personalized answer.

The main issue with ChatGPT seems to be its lack of questioning.

It answers but doesn’t ask questions.

Unlike VF contributors or a good travel agent.

Traveling isn’t about following your intuitions, your gut feeling?

Your own desires.

Generic answers to generic questions can only lead to touristy mainstreams.

How long has it been since you used the services of a good travel agent? And by the way, how do you recognize one?

For ages! ! Maybe 20 years...

A good travel agent is someone who asks lots of questions to really understand what the client is looking for and who puts the client's interest before their commission...

I used to be a travel agent, but not long enough to be a good one. I gave up. It was poorly paid and too focused on "feet in the sand" trips. I think you only sell well what you love yourself...

I thought so... So you're like me—you can use AI without taking bread from anyone 😉 For me, it was in 2020 for Namibia. Booking campsites in lodges seemed like too much of a chore... Plus, a certain virus was lurking, and it gave me the certainty I could reschedule (just in case...). And it went down to the wire—literally, to a border...

I was a travel agent, not long enough to be a good one. I quit. It was poorly paid and too focused on "feet in the sand" trips. I think you only sell well what you love yourself...

Friends often tell me: "Why don’t you retrain as a travel guide—you’d love it!" No way! Even coordinating with one person can be tough—imagine listening to complaints and minor ailments from a whole group for days... That said, I’ll be testing it out soon—I’ll let you know 🏴‍☠️

I’m not sure if artificial intelligence is really useful for much, but it does let you have a little fun...

A travel journal in comic-book form—an idea worth exploring?

Or not...

So, me... I use AI to brush up on my English before trips!!

Lol

I didn’t think I’d use it... even though I have two friends who chat with ChatGPT every day and love it.

Then... I was on WhatsApp and saw a chat with an AI pop up?

I started chatting to see what it was like in French, then... switched to English.

Perk: no impatience on its side, and I can end the conversation whenever I want. It corrects my mistakes and translates if I need it to. Plus, it’s open to any topic.

It’s crazy practical!

Before, you had to find a pen pal... it was such a hassle.

Now... one doesn’t rule out the other.

I’ll ask it the same question I posted on the forum... see what it suggests.

After all, you can use AI *and* still love the forum.

I thought this forum was dead—so happy to see it coming back to life!

On second thought, I wouldn’t want a trip I hadn’t personally designed. Probably one of the traits of an old-timer educated back in the day to create their own masterpiece without cutting corners.

On second thought, I wouldn’t want a trip I hadn’t personally designed. Probably one of the traits of an old-school traveler who was taught to craft their journey without cheating.

Word choice always matters; so, using AI would be "cheating" in your eyes. But when you "personally" design a trip, you’re inevitably relying on research, other people’s experiences, and documentation. AI does the same thing based on the prompt you give it—just on a web-wide scale. And it tailors its responses to your preferences, ultimately creating an original itinerary that remains your own creation.

This confirms what I wrote earlier—most travelers will all head in the same direction and see the same things, the same places... isn’t that just great? Too bad for a subjective take on things.
