Currency and Exchange in Tunisia
hi there, I’m heading to Tunisia 🙂 from April 27 to May 8 with my family. I’ve read through the various discussions about the country, but I’m still a bit unsure🤪: for currency exchange, I saw on the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs website that withdrawing currency with a bank card from ATMs is limited to 200 TND per week. There are four of us traveling by car, so that might be a bit tight! And it’s a hassle to carry a lot of cash, even if I’m not being paranoid! What do you all recommend? Cheers, Laurent.

Renting a car in Oran?
I'm heading to Oran for 15 days soon and want to rent a car there. I came across lovetour's website (lovetouralgerie)—it's well-designed and clear, which makes me think the company is as professional as the site, with competitive rates and an agency right at Es Senia Airport. I thought: *this is exactly what I need*. Except, when I checked their rental conditions, I saw "minimum age: 30 years"... !!! What’s their problem!? And here I was, feeling the weight of turning 30, at just 27...

Does anyone know this company? Do they *really* enforce that age rule, or with my well-behaved look and top-tier insurance bonus, might they make an exception? Otherwise, does anyone know other car rental companies in Oran?

Thanks.

Car rental in Tunisia
Hi everyone,

After months of chronic indecision (wavering between at least 15 countries ), I was initially going to Martinique, but in the end, it’ll be a trip to discover Tunisia—just 10 days for now. The dates are tentatively March 10–20, 2008, but they’re not completely finalized yet. I’m traveling with a friend.

I’ve already browsed the forum a bit—it’s packed with great info, so now I just need to sort through it all 😛. That said, I have a quick question: could anyone recommend a place for renting a car?

Otherwise, if you have any tips, I’d love to hear them! I’m a total beginner when it comes to planning trips, and this is my first one (gotta start somewhere, right? lol ). Thanks in advance 😉

Relaxing getaway and sightseeing in Essaouira in March?
Hi there!

I’d like to plan a week of "sun-soaked" relaxation in March, and based on my budget, I was thinking of Morocco—specifically Essaouira. I’ve got a few questions, just in case I’m getting the wrong idea about my trip: Do you know what the average weather is like at that time of year? Without going as far as swimming, is it still possible to enjoy the sunshine on walks or lounging on a deck chair? Since I’ve never been to Essaouira, is it a nice place to stay for a week (mixing sightseeing and relaxation)? Are the beaches pretty? Would you happen to know any addresses (like guesthouses or lodges) offering half-board or full-board, in a quiet spot? (With a garden to relax in, ocean views, or even a pool—fingers crossed!) At reasonable prices? (I have no idea what the price ranges are in Morocco.)

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hammam in Marrakech
Hi everyone, I’m heading to Marrakech next week and staying at an all-inclusive hotel, but it doesn’t have a hammam. I’m looking for one where we can possibly rent a private section for part of the day because I’d like to go with my wife. If anyone knows a place, thanks!

Laundromat addresses in Casablanca?
Hi, I'm looking for a laundromat in Casablanca like a *Lavomatic* where I can wash my clothes regularly, since I don’t have a washing machine. I live in the Lyautey Sector and have tried several dry cleaners in the area, but they only wash by the piece, not by the kilo, which would be too expensive for me.

Does anyone know of a dry cleaner that washes by the kilo or a self-service laundromat (ideally in Bourgogne or Gauthier)? I heard there’s one in Maarif, but I couldn’t find the address online.

Thanks in advance!

Marrakech: Great Tips and Things to Avoid?
hi there,

I’m just a few days away from my trip to Marrakech—I’m leaving from November 13th to 20th and bringing my parents along! I’d love to plan my stay as best as I can, and I’m sure the forum crew can help. So, here are my questions:

- Where’s the best place to exchange money without getting ripped off? The owner of the riad where we’re staying told us to avoid doing it at the airport because it’s really expensive and to do it in the medina instead, near Jemaa el-Fna square.

- Which traditional hammams do you recommend that are reasonably priced? How much should we budget for one? That’ll help me plan my expenses.

- What are some nice restaurants in the medina?

- I’d also like to know roughly how much to expect for a tea, a meal, a taxi, a djellaba, and babouches. I don’t want to get overcharged and would like to know what to expect.

- What are the must-do activities and places to visit?

Thanks in advance for your help....

Back from Skoura (Morocco)
A big thank you to the VoyageForum members who shared their experiences with us! We spent 3 wonderful days at "La Kasbah la Palmeraie" in Skoura. Coming from Marrakech (a stunning drive after the Tichka Pass via Telouet and Ait-Benhaddou), our stay at the Palmeraie was pure bliss: Mohammed and Ghizlane’s warm welcome, delicious breakfasts on the terrace overlooking the palm grove (wood-fired bread, honey pancakes made by Ghizlane), and equally delicious and hearty evening meals shared as a family around a cozy fire. We felt right at home and learned so much about the local way of life. The excursions offered were always interesting and off the beaten tourist track—from there, we explored the Dades Valley and Gorges, the Almond Blossom Valley (gorgeous!), and the palm grove. The region is home to magnificent kasbahs, including our hosts’. A different way to "visit" Morocco!

3 beautiful places in Morocco: 3 wonderful encounters
During our last trip in October, we shared some great moments in these three homes.

In Aït Benhadou at the TIGUAMI KHADIJA hostel, the house is very well furnished. Khadija is charming, speaks French, German, Berber, and Arabic fluently. She enjoys spending time with her guests and cooks very well—even the jams are homemade.

In Skoura, at the KASBAH LA PALMERAIE guesthouse, the welcome is always warm, and Ghizlane’s cooking is just as delicious: vegetable and meat rice, seffa, sardine meatballs... And the almond tree valley is still just as beautiful.

In Amellago, at Moha’s place, we were touched by the quality of the welcome, the unique charm of the house with its farm, the homemade butter, the beehives on the terrace, and the really interesting conversations with the two brothers. Plus, the region is stunning!

Distillery in the Valley of Roses
Hi,

Does anyone know the address of a rose flower distillery in the Valley of Roses / Kelaa M'Gouna? A traditional distillery, not just the tourist shop.

Thanks a bunch!

What's the best way to travel between Cairo and Luxor?
Hi! I’m planning a trip to Egypt in July with my 14-year-old daughter. We’ll spend a week in Cairo visiting different sites, and then we’d like to take a cruise for several days (4 to 6 days) from Luxor to Aswan. Should I take the train or a flight from Cairo to Luxor? Thanks for your advice!

Morocco Discovery Loop: Travel Journal
Hello,

My daughter (22) and I set off to explore a bit of her grandfather’s homeland. We left on July 26 from Roissy and arrived in Rabat with Air France. We had a few hiccups retrieving our luggage—1.5 hours of waiting and a mini interrogation at customs about our host’s address (they asked for a reference) and questions about a Moroccan ID card I’ve never applied for. Next time, I’d better have it—dual nationals get extra scrutiny.

We headed to the ONCF station to catch the train to Marrakech. First-class tickets cost 195 MAD, with assigned seats and decent comfort… the catch? The train was delayed, so we arrived at 2:50 AM instead of 12:10 AM.

We chose the Ibis Gare, located between the ONCF station and the Supratours bus terminal. We booked two nights from France for 79.85 €. To avoid the premium-rate call, just dial the hotel directly—they’ll handle the reservation. I’d signed up on the Ibis website beforehand for a discount (free and comes with perks).

On-site, we added 44 MAD for the tourist tax (11 MAD x 4 nights). We skipped breakfast—too pricey at 6.50 € per person. The hotel has a nice pool and a pleasant setting. The shower seals weren’t perfect, but the bedding was comfy, the linens soft, and the AC worked (though it was noisy). We were overall happy with it.

We had breakfast and lunch at a café/restaurant right across from the hotel—affordable and tasty.

For phones, we bought two Inwi SIM cards for 30 MAD each and a 5 GB internet top-up for 50 MAD—more than enough for our 16-day trip. Later, we added two 20 MAD call top-ups. Total phone budget for both of us: 150 MAD.

Taxis in Marrakech: No issues. We always asked for the meter—if a driver refused, we’d just move on. No haggling for us!

Day 1: We visited the Majorelle Garden (70 MAD per person). It was beautiful and peaceful. We walked there. In the afternoon, we took a taxi to Jemaa el-Fnaa square. The constant solicitations were exhausting—I felt like a guard dog fending people off. The worst part? We got lured deep into the medina to some sketchy spot under the pretense of seeing "Berber tanneries"—"last day!"—then had a guy grab our arms, demanding 200 MAD. I offered 50 MAD max since we hadn’t asked for anything. When he insisted, I threatened to go to the police. He finally let go for the 50 MAD. We headed back to the hotel to enjoy the pool before returning to the square for the evening. It was lively but noisy, and I found the vendors *way* too pushy. We walked back to the hotel—an hour-long stroll that was actually really nice. We kept no more than 150 MAD in our wallet at a time. We stuffed ourselves with smoothies—they’re *so* good.

Day 2: We left at 8:30 AM for Tinghir with Supratours, arriving at 4:45 PM instead of 4:00 PM (lots of roadwork). Tickets were 130 MAD per person + 5 MAD per checked bag. We stayed one night at the "Retour au Calme" hostel—super cozy! 150 MAD for a room with a private shower and toilet. AC was an extra 80 MAD per night (not mandatory) but worked great. Phone: +212 5248-34924. Breakfast was 30 MAD, and they offer tons of options, including budget-friendly choices like a couch for 80 MAD per person with shared showers/toilets. Half-board and full-board are also available. Mohamed and Alexandra are lovely. I booked by phone and paid on-site—they even picked us up from the bus station!

We took a taxi to the Todra Gorge—a breath of fresh air! It’s stunning and humbling. You feel tiny there. Shared taxis cost 8 MAD per person (fixed price). The organization was impressive. To get from the city center to the bus station: 3 MAD per person.

Day 3: We left at 4:00 PM for Merzouga, arriving at 9:30 PM. Tickets were 80 MAD per person + 5 MAD per checked bag. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Houssein, one of five brothers running the "Auberge Océan des Dunes." We had a lovely room with a private bathroom and kitchen access. Two rooms are available in this unit for 190 MAD per night for two, including breakfast.

Small hostels in Morocco: what's become of them?
On this forum, we’ve all shared our favorite spots. Today, I’m wondering what’s happening with those small hostels and how they’re coping with the crisis. I’m thinking especially of Hussein, the owner of the guesthouse in Ijoukak; Majhid from L’Arganier in Tafraout; the family running Escale Rando in Taliouine; and so many others. Through hard work, they’d created welcoming hostels where it was great to stop for a few days. Has anyone heard from them lately? Thanks in advance for your replies—the list isn’t exhaustive, there are plenty more.

8-day road trip starting from Agadir
Hi everyone! I’m heading to Morocco for a full 8 days in early November—it’s my first time visiting. I’m traveling solo and arrive in Agadir on Sunday at 10 PM. I plan to rent a car to get around. I’m reaching out to get your advice so I can plan my trip as well as possible... Here are my questions: 1 - Given my late arrival, is it better to stay overnight in Agadir for the first night? If so, do you have any hotel recommendations, and is transportation easy to arrange at that hour? 2 - Do you have any trusted rental car companies to recommend in Agadir? 3 - For 7 days, here’s the route I’ve planned: Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Tafraoute → Tiznit → Agadir. Does this route seem good (not too short, not too long, any spots worth adding?), considering I enjoy driving? 4 - Should I book my accommodations in advance? Thanks in advance for your recommendations! I hope these questions aren’t too repetitive compared to what’s already been asked on the forum. Sébastien

Trip to Algeria around Christmas
Hello, My husband and I (retired) are planning to spend a few days in Algeria around Christmas. I know a visa is required and that the application must be made in person (hotel reservation, travel insurance certificate, proof of sufficient funds), and the collection too. A few questions: -Is getting the visa easy or "problematic"? -Any hotel, guide, or points of interest recommendations for Algiers, Oran, Constantine? Thanks in advance for all your answers, and long live Voyage-Forum! Laurence

Good places to stay in Marrakech
Hi there,

A bit overwhelmed by all the accommodation options in Marrakech, especially with such conflicting reviews (super quiet, super noisy, comfy, horrible, etc.), do you have a guaranteed QUIET place to recommend (good insulation from the rest of the building and street noise) in the city?

Thanks in advance,

Olivier.

First trip to Morocco: what to see and do?
Hi there, We're interested in urbanism, architecture, Arab-Muslim culture, and the daily life of locals... A rough idea: Fez and Meknes. A good plan? Maybe too touristy? We prefer off-the-beaten-path destinations (we’ve traveled to Iran, for example). What else is there to see in the region? We’re open to any suggestions. Thanks for your tips!

What circuit to do in Morocco in January?
Hi there, I already know Morocco a bit (8th trip), but not much in winter (early January). Reading travel journals made me want to do the following 12-day circuit (10 days on site): Marrakech (my flight is booked) - Ouzoud Waterfalls - Tessaout Valley - Skoura - Aguinane Oasis - Taroudant - Marrakech

Has anyone already done this itinerary? We’re renting an ordinary car. Is the R307 road passable in winter? Same question for access to the village of Megdaz? And finally, can we reach Aguinane Oasis from the N10 without too much trouble? Is it worth the detour? Any other suggestions for the circuit?

Thanks in advance for your replies...

Return to Tassili N'Ajjer (Algeria)
Where to go in 2025?

How about Algeria and a return to the Tassili n’Ajjer? This part of the Sahara is arguably one of the most beautiful deserts on the planet for its diversity and is accessible to everyone.

The vastness of the black rock forests and ochre dunes is complemented by the intimacy of the Djanet oasis, the heart of the Tuareg country, and the mineral memory of the Erg Admer, which bears traces of prehistoric human activity. Camping under the Milky Way, suspended in a sky of forgotten purity, adds another dimension to this rare journey.
