Brazil 2020: Amazon, Northeast, Chapada, and Boipeba – a winning combo!

50 km over 3 days is indeed the distance mentioned in the trek description. Not much elevation gain like we’re used to here, but some sections were really acrobatic. It must’ve been 30 or 35°C—it was scorching hot!!

Guess I’ll need to look into it, because 50 km over 3 days isn’t a lot. You’re saying there’s not much elevation gain, so aside from the heat, the only challenges are the acrobatic sections?

Your itinerary looks a lot like what we’d planned, plus the Amazon and minus Salvador. Really amazing! It’s making me dream (and regret a little). Once we decide when we’re going, we’ll definitely do the 3D/2N hike! (Even if it sounds tough)

I loved Salvador and the vibe there during our first trip to Brazil. But the schedule didn’t let us linger this time. For the trek, I couldn’t imagine visiting the national park without doing it...

5 or 6 hours of hiking on the first and third days, with minimal elevation gain (max 300 m). The second day is a bit longer and more acrobatic to reach a “summit” whose name escapes me. But for someone who’s brushed up against Everest—even 20 years later—this is a walk in the park! 😉

Hi Caroline, and thank you! With a little training, I think these hikes are within reach for most people. Plus, the results are totally worth it! I’d minimized the risk by going private, so I could adjust based on any difficulties.

Hi Bruno, your travel journal is a treasure trove of spots in a country I don’t know, but the Amazon is a river that truly inspires me. Your comment about India— whether you liked it or not —I had the same feeling about Mongolia. One’s a hyper-crowded country, the other’s nearly a desert, yet the reaction was the same. So when you don’t like a place, it’s tough to write about. But when I finally sat down to write just to cement that month in Mongolia in my memory, my impressions, feelings, and experiences resurfaced over a few months, and strangely, I started to appreciate the trip I’d taken. To the point where I’d love to go back and cross the Gobi Desert from end to end over three months. Thanks for your story and photos—they’re so inspiring. Luc

Phew, I’m relieved—turns out everyone was just hiding! 😆 Tutoia itself isn’t anything extraordinary, but we loved its "real" life vibe… totally the opposite of Lençóis. But I just reread your 2015 Bahia travel journal—I’d completely forgotten you’d wandered around there!!!

Regarding Bahia... Right now, it’d be best not to plan anything for trips/vacations. Why? We’re dealing with a back-and-forth of those infamous lockdowns (partial, only from 5 PM to 5 AM) due to pressure from businesses that want to reopen at all costs—even though they know every reopening will lead to more deaths until there’s an effective vaccine. Local governments and Bahia’s state administration are doing an impossible job trying to contain the virus health-wise, but the economic pressure they’re under is enormous. On top of that, there’s also manipulation of the numbers... My father-in-law, who was 72, passed away three weeks ago from a long-standing health issue unrelated to COVID-19 (confirmed by his final day’s tracing tests). BUT even so, they put ‘suspected COVID-19 death’ on the death certificate because the public health ministry forces hospitals to do it. Now we’re in a legal battle to remove the COVID-19 mention from the certificate. Just to give you an idea of how hard it is to face/manage the reality of this coronavirus. Anyway, I’ll let you know when Bahia is safe to travel to again—peacefully and with secure health conditions. Tropical greetings from Salvador, Ivan Bahia Guide

Days 24 to 28: Boipeba

Since it’s time to wrap up this travel journal :(, we had to reach our final destination: Boipeba Island.

But getting to Boipeba from the Lençóis mountains isn’t easy. We needed two long-distance buses (but not Cama...), a taxi, and a speedboat to reach our little paradise via Feira de Santana and Valença... So, after 15 hours of travel and a very short night on the go, we finally set our bags down at our last haven of peace, the Pousada Santa Clara.

First, Boipeba itself. To describe it, I’ll borrow the words from my guidebook: "No roads or bridges, few maritime connections—Boipeba is a sweet treat whose wrapper demands a bit of determination. The sea is just as crystal-clear, the sun just as scorching, and the beaches just as paradisiacal as its neighbor Morro de São Paulo, but the vibe on the island and in the village is all about tranquility and simplicity. This little slice of heaven promises a few days of intimacy with nature dressed in its finest. On the deserted shores, you’ll alternate between swimming in natural pools and indulging in epicurean feasts before heading back to the village along trails winding through the *Mata* (forest). Quite the program—but what a program..." (Source: *Petit Futé Amazonie/Nordeste*)

It’s true—you feel at home right away here. Mass tourism hasn’t hit yet. No cars, just a few shared quads and tractors connecting the beaches to the village. The atmosphere is laid-back, the tourism mostly local, and the places magical...

But the magic of the place was amplified by our host, Charles, the owner of Pousada Santa Clara, who speaks perfect French and took great care of us. And what about his brother, Mark—a quiet presence at the pousada’s restaurant—who delighted our taste buds with his culinary creativity and the excellence of his dishes, reinvented so well each night that we never wanted to eat anywhere else...

Days 24 to 28: Boipeba

Our four days here will be the perfect counterpoint to our Brazilian adventure: beaches, relaxation, caipirinhas, and gastronomic delights.... Instead of words, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves:

Just because it’s empty doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tidy up...

Days 24 to 28: Boipeba

Totally recharged after these four days of relaxation, we can now plan our return to France via Salvador de Bahia. We’ll go for the VIP option, with a 4x4 taking us to Morro de São Paulo, where we’ll catch a catamaran that drops us right at the foot of Pelourinho. A few last-minute buys at Mercado Modelo, one final beer on the terrace, a last Uber to the airport, and TAP will fly us via a two-hour layover in Lisbon to Geneva to wrap up our trip the next day...

From the south to the north of the island, there’s only one road: the beach!

And in the End?

And in the end, what can I say?

Nothing but good things, as you might guess... This new trip to Brazil only reinforced my first impression: Brazil is vast and magical, so many countries in one! So much exuberant nature, so many beautiful things!

But above all, despite the language barrier, the people are so welcoming! We only encountered kindness and helpfulness, goodwill, and a desire to communicate...

Don’t be fooled, though—you also need to be careful. Some aspects of the country aren’t as idyllic, and more than once, we thought, *here, we shouldn’t go there...*

But overall, the hospitality is extraordinary. Not once did we feel like walking dollar signs, as you might in some Southeast Asian countries...

So, yes, we definitely came back from this trip on a little cloud, and I’ll admit it did a lot of good to get through these tough times... But that’s another story...

Thanks for following along!

Hi Anne. Thanks for reading. I won’t tell you Brazil is as safe as Canada or Luxembourg… Yeah, it can be sketchy at times, but mostly in big cities, I think. During our whole trip, my “warning lights” never hit red (that’s the expression I use with my wife to let her know there’s a problem), but they did turn orange a few times… As always, a little less flash and a lot more common sense can lower the risk. I take a very “Mektoub” approach to this—Paris can be just as dangerous as Rio, it’s all about karma…

Oh yes, tropical correspondent extraordinaire—your travel journal pretty much says it all! Lovely photos, a pleasure to read, in precise and polished French. Well done! Just a little tip for a future return to our beloved Salvador: right in the heart of Pelourinho, there’s a tiny, typical spot called Cravinho that’s *truly* worth stopping at—standing room only, but a must! Huge crowds of locals and tourists sipping all kinds of caipirinhas: tamarind, coconut, genipapo, ginger, and so on. They’re stored in wooden barrels by the dozen on shelves above the bar—all polished wood, magical! It’s the perfect follow-up to your description of arriving by catamaran and being dropped off at the foot of Mercado Modelo, where you’ll take the grand Lacerda elevator up to the municipal square, not far from the historic center where this legendary spot has been a fixture for decades.

Just wanted to give you a shout-out for the quality of your sharing about this beautiful country, which isn’t always easy to navigate day-to-day for locals or future travelers! A country that adopted me—and that I’ve adopted—32 years ago!
