You’re clearly a man of experience—your application is welcome, provided you accept the mission: putting the French on a dry regime. The task is tough, but you’ll get access to the Senate’s cellar, reputed to be one of the best in Paris.

It seems to me that the 35-hour workweek didn’t result in new jobs but rather an increase in productivity for existing staff...

So, it’s not the main reason for the debt (though it might contribute to the chaos in hospitals, since productivity isn’t really a concept that applies to medical teams).

When it comes to public debt, don’t lose sight of the fact that businesses receive over 120 € billion in subsidies. And regarding the 35-hour workweek, since France has lost a large part of its industries, it no longer makes sense to talk about productivity—especially hourly productivity. Is a manager who spends all their time in meetings really productive? As for industry, the debate over the 35-hour workweek is pure hypocrisy since robots replaced workers a long time ago already [:)]

Hence the idea of making robots contribute to the social contract by taxing their use (contributions just like a physical employee).

Not just in industry (self-checkout counters, for example).

Some managers are productive, while others, like many politicians, just spin their wheels and love the sound of their own voices. Meeting overload and presenteeism are France’s two biggest productivity killers...

In a post-apocalyptic world, I’d happily trade 10,000 managers for one nurse or plumber.

Productivity can also be hard to measure in many public-sector jobs. What’s the productivity of a hospital or a school? How do you measure the productivity of a receptionist? Is rushing users out the door just to fill statistics really the goal?
