Rainbow Falls is an artificial waterfall located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park in California. At certain times of the year, the water takes on a striking green hue due to algae.

Unfortunately, when we went, the waterfall was dry.

Prayerbook Cross, also known as Sir Francis Drake’s Cross, is an 18-meter-tall Celtic stone cross located at the top of Rainbow Falls.

Its construction began in November 1892, and it was officially inaugurated on January 1, 1894, during San Francisco’s Winter Fair.

This monument commemorates the first Anglican service held on the West Coast by Francis Fletcher and the inaugural use of the Book of Common Prayer in North America.

Originally, the cross was meant to be visible from the Pacific Ocean to guide sailors to shore. However, trees have grown, and their dense foliage now blocks the view.

Robin Williams Meadow is a large meadow located at the southeast end of Golden Gate Park. It features a big playground for kids, picnic areas, and the Sharon Art Studio, which offers visual arts classes.

Nearby is a beautiful historic carousel that first opened in 1914. This 62-animal merry-go-round was part of the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939.

The Hidden Garden Steps are located at the corner of 16th Avenue and Kirkham Street in the Inner Sunset neighborhood, while the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are at the corner of 16th Avenue and Moraga Street in the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, California.

These are two staircases whose risers have been decorated with stunning mosaics.

The Hidden Garden Steps consist of 148 steps divided into nine sections, each featuring a unique mosaic on the theme of nature (flowers, plants, insects, and creatures).

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps have 163 steps made with nearly 75,000 ceramic and glass tiles, depicting a scene that stretches from the sea to the sky.

You can take a short hike by climbing the Hidden Garden Steps first. At the top of this staircase, just follow 16th Avenue down to the base of the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps.

Climbing this second staircase will take you to the top of Grandview Park, which offers a 360° panoramic view of San Francisco.

As you’ve probably guessed, this route involves quite a few steps to climb up and down. However, it lets you admire the different mosaic sections, which are truly amazing.

Despite its name, Twin Peaks actually consists of three summits: Noe Peak, Eureka Peak, and Christmas Tree Point.

Located over 280 meters above sea level, these summits offer a breathtaking panorama of downtown San Francisco and its bay.

There are parking spaces near all three sites. However, the largest parking lot is at Christmas Tree Point.

As for us, we parked our car near Noe Peak and took a short hike to reach the summits of these small hills.

The summits are close together, and a well-maintained trail with steps makes it easy to get there.

CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA

Location: 36.54309, -121.91925

We stopped by the Mission San Carlos Borroméo del río Carmelo. It’s located near the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea and is a designated historic landmark.

Founded in 1771, this mission aimed to extend Spanish influence in Alta California by converting Indigenous populations to Christianity and integrating them into Spanish culture.

Even today, it remains an active Catholic parish and an important site for cultural and religious pilgrimage.

When we visited, the site was closed, but I managed to take a few photos of it.

**Fairy Tale Houses of Carmel-by-the-Sea**

One of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s attractions is its collection of fairy tale houses. This whimsical theme was created by Hugh Comstock, a toy maker.

His wife had a beautiful doll collection. He first built a fairy-tale house to store them, along with a workshop right next door.

Little by little, Hugh Comstock built several more houses in this style in the area. Twenty-one of these houses still exist today, with about ten of them clustered in a small area that can be explored on foot.

Stop by the Carmel-by-the-Sea Visitor Center to pick up a self-guided map of Comstock’s fairy tale houses.

The Big Creek Bridge is an architectural marvel along the iconic Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) in California.

Built in 1932, this bridge is still functional today, and with its arch that blends seamlessly into the surrounding coastal landscape, it’s a great example of early 20th-century ingenuity.

A few belvederes at both ends of the bridge offer stunning panoramic views of the bridge itself and the coastline.

SHIPWRECK - ESTERO BLUFFS STATE PARK

35.44951, -120.91828 North Ocean Parking Area 35.44748, -120.91899 Shipwreck

To access this shipwreck, you first need to head to the dirt parking lot at the corner of Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) and N. Ocean Ave in California.

A short hike of about 250 meters from the parking lot will take you to the edge of the cliff overlooking the beach, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the wreck.

It’s also possible to reach the wreck at low tide. However, when we were there, we had to skip it because the tide was high, and the waves were crashing against the boat’s hull.

Still, the ship’s condition is pretty rough, so it’s definitely best to steer clear.

The story goes that on July 28, 2017, this commercial fishing boat was returning to the port of Morro Bay. Unfortunately, the boat’s propeller got tangled in a crab trap line, and the owner cut the engine to try to free it.

But then, a thick fog rolled into the bay, reducing visibility while the boat drifted. It eventually ran aground in the sand at the base of the cliffs in Estero Bay.

The boat’s owner and his crewmate were able to leave the boat safely at low tide, and the Coast Guard declared the vessel beyond repair.

Removing the boat from the water would have cost the California State Lands Commission 70 000 $ since it had run aground on their land—a sum they couldn’t afford.

With no existing program for commercial vessels, the owner was held responsible for removing the boat. But since he had no insurance, he chose to abandon it.

CHUMASH PAINTED CAVE - SANTA BARBARA

Location: 34.50420, -119.78761

The Chumash Painted Cave is located about 3 km from Route 154 (San Marcos Pass Road) in Santa Barbara, California.

The road leading to it (Painted Cave Road) is narrow and very winding. On-site parking is extremely limited.

The cave with the rock paintings is just a short walk from the road. You only need to climb a small rocky staircase to reach it.

You can view the rock paintings through a metal grate that has been placed at the cave entrance to protect them from vandalism.

Anthropologists estimate that these paintings date back to the 17th century, or even earlier.

The pigments used by the Chumash people for their drawings mainly came from natural mineral sources in their environment.

Common colors include red, black, and white. Red is often attributed to hematite (iron oxide), black to charcoal or manganese, and white to chalk or diatomaceous earth.

These natural pigments, mixed with binders like plant sap or animal fat, allowed the Chumash to create vibrant and durable patterns on the cave walls.
