Oops, sorry 😊 The dolphin show is south of Chanthaburi. It’s: Oasis Sea World dolphin show. As for the day before, it takes place at the hotel, which is about 30 km from Chanthaburi—I’m talking about: http://www.faasai.com/home.php

There you go 😛

Monday, August 13th This morning we have breakfast at the hotel while waiting for 10 AM, the time to head to the beach. Eventually, we end up leaving late and only depart for Chao Lao beach at 11:30 AM.

It only takes us 15 minutes to get there. At the end of a small street, we pass through a bunch of beachfront restaurants and souvenir shops before reaching a fine sandy beach.

The beach is large and slopes gently into a sea that must be around 35°C. Romane and I wade in about 30 meters, fully clothed, and welcome the big waves with undisguised joy. But as the tide rises, we gradually move back toward the shore. Plus, the weather is perfect, and the sun is beating down.

After our sea bath, we browse the shops behind the beach restaurants and buy a few small items (600 Baht). We continue our stroll, watching thousands of little crabs scurry into their holes as we approach, leaving their sand balls behind until we pass.

Around 3 PM (the time we’d agreed on when we arrived), the driver comes back to pick us up. Once we’re back, we shower and—quick!—head to the pool. What a treat!

In the evening, after packing our bags (since we’re leaving tomorrow), we eat dinner and then—off to bed.

Tuesday, August 14th Woke up at 7 AM. We had coffee one last time on the terrace with the beautiful view, then packed our things to go down for breakfast and pay the hotel bill, outings, and meals (~18,300 Baht).

After that, the hotel minibus took us to Chanthaburi with another tourist couple so we could catch the bus to Bangkok.

In Chanthaburi, at the bus station, we bought our tickets at the first counter we saw (615 Baht) and waited for our bus for over an hour.

We left at 11:15 AM. We made a quick stop to fill up the tank, then took the same route back as we had on the way there. I recognized the landscapes passing by the window.

When we arrived in Bangkok, the sky showed an impressive tropical storm front that quickly turned into heavy rain, washing over the city. Luckily, we were on the bus!

When we got to the terminal, the storm had passed, and we could retrieve our bags from the bus storage and head out randomly in search of a taxi. Of course, none of the drivers who approached us used the "taxi-meter," so we ended up taking a tuk-tuk to our hotel (250 Baht).

Our hotel is in a tourist-packed neighborhood! (Rambuttri Village) The street and reception are buzzing. Once we checked in and paid the bill (2,700 Baht), we went up to our room to drop off our bags and headed out to explore the area.

It feels strange—so different from what we’re used to. We grabbed a few street food snacks and drinks (270 Baht), then went back to eat and rest. The bus ride took about 4 hours, and it’s the end of the day anyway.

Wednesday, August 15th Another gentle wake-up. We head out for a not-so-great breakfast at the foot of the hotel, then take a taxi (~120 baht) to the MBK shopping center.

We explore almost every section (some even multiple times) and make a few purchases (~2000 baht). We eat on the spot (~300 baht) and continue our stroll before taking the skytrain (~45 baht) to visit Lumphini Park.

There are turtles, birds, and among the paths and ponds, huge monitor lizards—just like the one we saw in Ayutthaya. They’re impressive.

Since we walked a lot, fatigue starts to set in. So, we look for a taxi to head back. At the park exit, we take large pedestrian bridges to cross busy roads and finally find a taxi that uses the meter in front of what looks like a hospital. But on the way, the driver seems completely lost. Even with my phone’s GPS, which I hold up showing the clear route, he panics and ends up taking us back to the starting point without charging us anything.

We’re forced to find another taxi, which doesn’t use the meter but knows the city perfectly and takes us to our destination without any issues (~150 baht).

On the way, we get caught in another monsoon downpour. The sky is pitch black! We were planning to enjoy the hotel pool... but by the time we arrive, it’s too late—the pool closes 30 minutes after we get back.

So, we head out into the neighborhood to do some more shopping (~600 baht), grab some food for the room (~300 baht), and that wraps up the day.

But the good laugh I got from the misspelled "sans coup-fait-rire" (no-laugh-fail) was worth way more than 10 baht.

Just kidding, I love family adventures from Gordrash 😉 and if you look closely, I wrote the bahts the way he lists the prices every time 😄

Yeah, I saw that, we misunderstood each other—no big deal... I also really like gordrash’s adventures, but when he writes "sans-coup-fait-rire," I laugh my head off. Alright, I’m gonna go cook my pasta, it’s *halles-d’aine-thé* now. 😎

Thursday, 16.08 This morning, nothing’s urgent, but we wake up early—definitely the excitement of departure since it’s our last day in Thailand. We head up to enjoy the rooftop pool. The weather is gorgeous, and the view is stunning.

After this energizing start, we head out for breakfast in the street, then take a little stroll around the neighborhood.

Around 11 a.m., we return to check out of the room, leave our luggage in the hotel’s storage, and set off to find our last souvenirs in the neighborhood streets. We grab lunch at a small street-side restaurant.

By 4 p.m., the weather takes a turn, so we go back to pick up our bags and ask the hotel to call us a taxi to the airport (I don’t remember the exact price—maybe around 300 or 400 baht).

We get into the taxi, which plunges into traffic. After 15 minutes of gridlock, it drops us back in the same neighborhood and transfers us to another taxi, handing off the job and leaving us stranded. We’re furious—good thing we left early!

The second taxi driver seems to handle things better but looks frustrated about taking such a long trip. I can tell he’s on the verge of giving up or losing his cool multiple times. The ride feels endless with the heavy traffic. The jams aren’t much different from ours back home.

After a few tense moments about whether we’d make it, we finally arrive at the airport around 7 p.m. Our flight isn’t until 12:30 a.m., so no worries there.

We look for where to check our bags and wait for the counters to open, passing the time people-watching around us.

Once our bags are checked, we go through customs—bag checks and passports—then enter the massive duty-free area. We hunt for our gate and spend our last baht.

Finally, we wait for boarding, which eventually happens. On the plane, just like on the way there, they serve a hot meal, blankets, pillows, an eye mask, and headphones for the screen in front of us. During the flight, I watch movies and doze a bit. In the morning, about an hour before landing, they serve breakfast. We stop over in Amman.

🙂 You guys also made me laugh reading your comments. But joking aside, how should I have written that expression? Otherwise, thanks for your encouraging messages. 🙂

No worries at all, we totally agree! And otherwise, yeah, it's always nice to read a travel story full of discovery, wonder, naivety, and genuine excitement—after so much prose from seasoned travelers who are either demanding or jaded...

I thought it was written on purpose, a play on "Meaux"! 😉 You really made us laugh in the moment 😏😄😇

Did you really get to the airport 5 and a half hours before takeoff, even though the taxi ride took longer than expected? 😮 The charm of waiting in airport terminals, when it gets you like this 😏

Well yeah, but we really didn’t want any hassles with the flights—since we’re not used to this mode of transport, we preferred to play it safe. 😉 It’s not quite like taking a bus; there are tons of formalities, and if something goes wrong, it quickly spirals into a massive time-suck.

Hello, Thank you so much for sharing your family trip story. I’ve been to Thailand several times, yet I still wanted to read it from start to finish. It felt so fresh and genuine. Plus, it brought back memories of my own first steps when I discovered the PDS, just like you. I’m sure, like me and so many other friends on this forum, you won’t be able to resist going back. Welcome to the club!!!

You were right, and now that you’ve seen how it works, you can cut down the time next time—say, by a couple of hours (check-in 2 hours before takeoff + 1 to 1.5 hours max buffer if there’s a transport issue or something + of course the estimated travel time to the airport). Unless you’ve got *super* well-behaved kids, mine love flying but hate waiting in airports just as much as I do, and things can get a little tense 🏴‍☠️

thanks so much for this story—it’s awesome that you took the time to write it up! I’ll try to do the same for my next trips.

But the posts are very old

Actually, you missed an episode. In the meantime, the message that Jojo and I were calling out was deleted, and as a result, the recipient of our replies was wrongly changed (automatically, I assume) to Gordrash, the last person to respond in 2019, who has nothing to do with it. But there was indeed a disguised ad originally posted very recently (and a second one in another thread) by a user who only had those two ads on their record, which is why my reaction wasn’t exactly gentle. I think that since the disguised ad was rightly removed, our replies referring to it, which have become irrelevant, could have been deleted too.
