hi this thread is for thoughts and reflections, not my latest extraordinary photos commented on by all those future tourists who just want to reassure themselves they’ll see the Big Five. I’m not a travel agency—I’ve got my own vehicle, I don’t stay in lodges, and I go when I want—so I’m no expert compared to you all. So I’ll probably get told to get lost, like it’s happened before. No, I’m just trying to follow some discussions in French in my English-speaking world and think along with some of you.

Hi there,

A huge thank you for this travel journal—it’s really making me want to visit Botswana after my little trip to Namibia last summer 🙂.

I appreciate it even more because, having written a few journals myself, I know how much time it takes!

Hello,

A big thank you for this travel journal that really makes me want to go to Botswana after a short trip to Namibia last summer 🙂.

I appreciate it even more because, having done a few travel journals myself, I know how time-consuming it is!

Hi Alix,

Yes, it takes time, but it’s a great resource for planning our trips and giving us ideas.

Namibia is on my list of destinations—I’ll definitely check out the travel journals for inspiration! 😊

hi airone

A jackal

It's strange—it doesn’t look anything like the standard jackal, which is grayer, with a shorter snout and smaller ears. I think it might be a different species; it’s definitely not a side-striped jackal, in any case.

I found it, it's this one The striped jackal is curious—I’d never seen one before. I used to just stick with the black-backed jackal and didn’t miss out on anything...

You’re not wrong, Zézette (funny username for someone who criticizes others for playing the "who’s got the biggest" game…😎), we don’t talk enough about the state of the roads, campsites, routes taken, and travel times in the different travel journals.

On the other hand, when we see your avatar, we’re a bit skeptical when we read you criticizing those who post photos of the animals they were lucky enough to encounter 😉.

Here, it’s about a guided trip—it’s pretty obvious that the person telling the story didn’t worry about the roads they took; they completely relied on the guides, and they were right to do so—they paid for that. Besides, you who live in Botswana, you must know what kind of tourist Batswana prefer: those who pay top dollar and stay in lodges employing lots of staff, or those like you or me who travel independently or rent a car to camp in the parks?

That’s it—the guide had told us it was rare to see one, but I didn’t remember the name he gave us.

hi my username comes from zezette épouse x as for my avatar, I didn’t know that’s what it was called—it’s just something unusual: a photo of Little Tom’s Hide in Hwange where tourists are supposed to be inside and the animals outside
ZE Zezettedez Regular ·
hi there are 2 types of jackal in southern Africa: black-backed and side-striped, the latter being the rarer one sorry, I don’t have the names in French

You know as well as I do that practically all the campsites in Botswana have been privatized, along with the price hikes that come with it—no extra services for now, but some outrageous excesses, like at Kwad and Tau Pan. How’s that even spelled, by the way? They’re selling everything to South Africans.

So they’re making bank no matter how you travel, and the risk is that in the future, these South African companies will build lodges that are out of reach for the average traveler.

For example, Robins Camp in Hwange, where you can land by plane, and many private camps in Hwange too—for me, it’s the beginning of the end.

Yes, that’s definitely a side-striped jackal: http://www.girardinphoto.net/piwigo/picture.php?/2099/category/46

It’s true that this is heading in a direction that doesn’t inspire much dreamin’ 🏴‍☠️.

You have to admit, there’s some serious abuse going on. These price hikes with no improvements to the services are outrageous. I’m going back to Botswana to please some friends who want to go, but after that, as far as I’m concerned, this destination is done. There’s so much else to explore.

Hi Jean François, Thanks for your photos—personally, this is exactly what I’m looking for there too. It’s making me dream...😉😉

yes, there’s so much to do, but sometimes after you’ve done quite a bit, you start to wonder—that’s where I am. For me, this is a perpetual vacation: few work hours, my house, my garden, my birds waking me up in the morning, and the freedom to leave whenever I want, away from the crowds. And it’s true, it’s cheaper when you’re a resident.

This:

“Yet another ‘wildlife documentary’ with the guy who’s got the biggest I still don’t get the point”

“Sorry, I’ve got nothing against you, but it still makes me laugh—the contest for the best camera and zoom”

This doesn’t add anything! And it might even be seen as offensive to those who come back with stars in their eyes and kindly share their experiences with everyone dreaming on the forum.... Let’s just call it a slip of the tongue. No hard feelings

hi when I first joined the forum there was a "thoughts and reflections" section, but now we're in "travel journals," which is really different and not what I'm looking for. So where's the old section?
ZE Zezettedez Regular ·
okay, I just figured out how I switched forums—not because of a language error, but a computer mishap. Am I that clueless? Hey, safe travels!
ZE Zezettedez Regular ·
hey sylvain I’m getting back to you to apologize for my "offenses"—it reminds me of something... To those who felt attacked by me, I’d moved on to a discussion about thoughts and reflections, as I mentioned, and ended up in travel journals. I didn’t understand this avalanche of photos and reports that didn’t interest me, which is why, still thinking I was in the first section, I got worked up. Oh well, I’m just another tropicalized idiot. To everyone, happy shooting! valerie

Thanks, it's no big deal... Send us some news from that beautiful Southern Africa. Here's a little photo as a gift....😉

I found it, it's this one The striped jackal—so weird, I’d never seen one before. I was happy enough with the black-backed jackal and didn’t miss a thing...

OH WOW!!

I was surprised no one reacted to this insane sighting of a striped jackal! First time I’ve ever seen one in a Southern Africa travel journal, from what I remember. Maybe once or twice in Kruger Facebook group photos.

Amazing sighting! 🙂 With the big gear 😎
