FLORIDA - MIAMI BEACH - ART DECO DISTRICT
Located at the southern tip of South Beach, Miami’s Art Deco District consists of hundreds of buildings designed in a unique architectural style.
Although most of the buildings date from 1925 to 1940, they’ve been renovated and maintained to make Miami such a glamorous tourist destination.
Art Deco is an artistic movement that emerged in the 1920s and reached its peak during the Great Depression, when Americans embraced this architecture as a way to boost the country’s morale.
Art Deco buildings are primarily characterized by basic geometry (cubes, spheres, and straight lines) with a strong ornamental abundance, as the function of Art Deco was more decorative than functional.
Terrazzo floors, ceiling moldings, tropical and pastel colors, parallel stripes, and above all, bright neon signs are some of the most important elements of the Art Deco style.
The Art Deco District is considered a treasure by Miami locals. It’d be impossible to find another place with such a large number of buildings in this particular style—and, most importantly, in perfect condition after nearly a hundred years. Plus, this colorful area includes much of Ocean Drive, one of the city’s most touristy and lively spots.
If you want to learn more about this architectural style, you can head to the Miami Art Deco District Welcome Center to book a 90-minute tour with a volunteer guide or rent an audio guide.
To explore the most important buildings in the area, you can start your visit at the southern end of Ocean Drive, between 6th and 7th Streets.
Park Central Hotel (630 Ocean Drive). Colony Hotel (736 Ocean Drive). Waldorf Towers Hotel (860 Ocean Drive). Breakwater Hotel (940 Ocean Drive). Edison Hotel (960 Ocean Drive). Art Deco District Welcome Center (1001 Ocean Drive). Victor Hotel (1144 Ocean Drive). Leslie Hotel (1244 Ocean Drive). The Carlyle (1250 Ocean Drive). Crescent Hotel (1400 Ocean Drive). McAlpin Hotel (1424 Ocean Drive).
Turning left onto 15th Street:
Haddon Hall (1500 Collins Avenue).
Walking south on Collins Avenue and turning right onto 13th Street:
Miami Beach Main Post Office (1300 Washington Avenue). Astor Hotel (956 Washington Avenue).
Returning to 10th Street and heading to Collins Avenue:
Essex House (1001 Collins Avenue). The Hotel (801 Collins Avenue).
