What are the criteria that make you choose one destination over another?

Hello,

No Spanish-speaking countries: simple, he doesn’t speak Spanish. QED

I don’t know if this is an echo of something I wrote, but it resonates with me because yesterday at lunch, I was eating with a few young colleagues who shared this—very relative—aversion to Spanish-speaking countries. A way of monopolizing the sound space, of imposing themselves. They’re young, mostly talked about hostel experiences, but in reality, we shared the same reservations about traveling to Spanish-speaking countries. Afterward, there might be a tradition of maritime and cultural conflicts,

One time, a group like that ruined our lunch at a little Bordeaux restaurant.

“We were five talking, but sounded like a thousand.”

I live an hour away from Spain, I go there often—they’re a handful But nice. And a bit calmer in the south… Same in Mexico. I remember looking for quiet restaurants; that was my only must-have! As for the racket in hotels… Generally, noise is a struggle for me.

Hi Lillie, and thanks for this tip. I loved it. I looove Spanish-speaking—and Portuguese-speaking—countries, especially Latin America!

Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil have amazing music, but during my stay in Cape Verde, I don’t remember hearing any of theirs.

I’m responding to the original topic—I’ll read the whole thread in more detail later!

It’s a broad question, so...

Generally, I decide based on the seasons, my interest in the destination, and how accessible it is. I’ve visited quite a few cities that are well-connected by plane, depending on flight prices.

Or I’ve taken road trips around France by car.

For a long time, I traveled on a tight budget, so some destinations weren’t possible.

Now, budget isn’t really an issue anymore—I go where I feel like, depending on the season and accessibility.

For villages or landscapes in France, it depends on my driver because I don’t drive 😅

I’d love to take long-haul trips now, but in the end, Europe is still what interests me the most.

I can say I’ve visited the places I really wanted to!

When destinations are "equal," why I chose one over the other also depends on opportunities or a bit of chance.

I’m now on a home-exchange site, but not necessarily simultaneous, so it also depends on whether I find something nice and any offers that come up.

I went to Brussels twice recently thanks to a reciprocal exchange.

I spent the summer in Brittany, and I also discovered Dunkirk and its surroundings that way!

For example, last June, I was torn between Stockholm and Copenhagen. I checked flight and accommodation prices for both and found a better opportunity in Stockholm. In the end, it appealed to me a little more, but if I’d found an apartment on the exchange site, I would’ve gone to Copenhagen.

Sometimes, it’s hard to decide!

good evening, as Bernard Lavilliers would say (Rio de Janeiro) music is a cry from within 😛

Hi Lillie

I traveled the world to listen, to hear, the sounds that come from the hearts of people, when hearts are kind!

To support your point: 🙂

Music might not be the first criterion that comes to mind when choosing this destination, which some criticize, and yet...

Oops, our trip to Cape Verde was in 2016 and I’d completely forgotten about its music! These days, I’m more into salsa, rumba, bachata, and reggaeton.

I would’ve loved to go to Jamaica just for the reggae and the people there... but alas, it’s too late now.

Living in Latin America, Jamaica is in our plans, but for now we're looking for a sunny spot in Europe this summer.

Hi there, Choosing music as a criterion for picking a destination is really interesting. Discovering local music or reconnecting with it. You can also create your own soundtrack to go with your trip. Oh, and I almost forgot about radio stations—they’re a goldmine… Happy trails.

Hello Choosing music as a criterion for picking a destination—very interesting.

If you're a musician or prioritize a destination based on local music, I highly recommend heading to Havana. There, you’ll find what you’re looking for—provided you can speak Spanish if possible.
