Hello everyone, what a pleasure to be back on this forum!
My partner and I are heading to Japan for the first time from mid-December to mid-January for 31 days. It’s a long-held dream we’ve been saving for over two years, and we want to enjoy ourselves while also being mindful of our budget for parts of the trip. We’d love to explore Tokyo, but we’ve chosen to spend more time in nature. My partner plans to get his driver’s license translated locally so we can rent a car. We’ve heard from friends who’ve been that Japan isn’t the best place for improvisation, so we’ve tried to allow plenty of time in each location to avoid rushing.
Still, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary we’ve planned—whether it’s feasible in terms of travel and how interesting it seems. Given the recent increase in the JR Pass price and the fact that we’ll spend about ten days on Goto, Ojika, and Yakushima (where the JR Pass doesn’t cover travel), we don’t think it’s worth it for us. Instead, we’re planning to take the train from Tokyo to Fukuoka and then use buses and ferries for the rest of Kyushu. Here’s our itinerary:
1- December 13 / Arrival in Tokyo, one night in Tokyo, then departure for Fukuoka by train on the morning of the 14th.
2 - December 14-16 / 2 nights in Fukuoka, sightseeing, then departure on the evening/night of the 16th by ferry to Ojika Islands.
3 - December 17-21 / 4 nights on Ojika, cycling and exploring, then departure on the 21st by ferry to Fukue on the Goto Islands.
4 - December 21-24 / 3 nights on the Goto Islands, renting a car to explore, maybe a trip to Hisaka. Departure for Nagasaki by ferry on the morning of the 24th.
5- December 24-26 / 2 nights in Nagasaki, visiting the city and memorials, possibly the hot springs in Unzen. Departure on the evening of the 26th by bus or ferry (?) to Kumamoto.
6- December 26-29 / 3 nights in Kumamoto, sightseeing, day trip by car to Mount Aso and surrounding areas. Departure on the 29th in the late afternoon by bus to Kagoshima, overnight in Kagoshima.
7- December 30 to January 2 / Morning departure by ferry to Yakushima for 3 nights, hiking and exploring the island. Departure on January 2 on the only ferry (?) in the early afternoon back to Kagoshima.
8- January 2 to 5 / Uncertain leg... We’d like to spend the night of the 4th to the 5th at a ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen and then head back to Fukuoka and Tokyo by train on the 5th. From the 2nd to the 4th, since we’ll arrive in Kagoshima in the late afternoon, we thought we could head back up to Kumamoto by train or bus—going to Yufuin or Beppu would take much longer and leave us with very little time. But is it worth staying another 2 nights in Kumamoto to explore the area, given we’ll already be there for 3 days from December 26-29? Or should we stay in Kagoshima and head up to Kurokawa Onsen on the afternoon of the 4th for our overnight stay?
9- January 5 to 13, Tokyo and its endless things to do and see, then back to France!

In short, we want to go during Golden Week, see late-blooming cherry trees, and have the freedom to get around with a rental car.
Here’s the plan:

I’m planning a trip to Japan with my three grown-up kids, who aren’t exactly keen on rushing from one place to another with heavy luggage. I’ve tried to balance things so we can see as much as possible while still giving them time to enjoy the evenings.
Here’s what I’ve come up with:
- Arrival in Tokyo on May 17
- Staying in Tokyo from May 17 to 22, exploring the city,
with a day trip to Nikko (round trip in one day): is it worth it, considering it’s a 2-hour train ride each way?
- Sending our big suitcases directly to Osaka
- Traveling to Kamakura on May 23: 1 night (with small luggage)
- Traveling to Hakone on May 24: 1 night (with small luggage)
- Heading to Osaka on May 25: staying from May 25 to June 2 in Osaka, where we’ll pick up our big suitcases
Day trips from Osaka:
- Kyoto: 2 days (round trip in one day)
- Nara: 1 day (round trip in one day)
My son would prefer to stay in Osaka for all 8 days, but I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to spend at least one night in Kyoto. What do you think?
- Leaving for Himeji on June 3: is it possible to leave both big and small luggage in a coin locker to visit the castle, or is it better to do a round trip from Osaka?
- Traveling to Hiroshima: 3 nights from June 3 to 5:
- Hiroshima: 1 day
- Miyajima: 1 day
- Okayama and Kurashiki: 1 day: is it better to do a round trip from Hiroshima and return to Tokyo from there, or spend the night of June 5 in Okayama and head to Tokyo from there?
- Back to Tokyo from June 6 to 9, with departure on the morning of June 9.
Since I’ve never been to Japan, I’ve tried to focus on the most interesting spots. Are there any places I’ve missed that you think we should add, or others that might not be as worthwhile?
About the luggage: is it a hassle to forward it to Kamakura, Hakone, and Kyoto? How much do coin lockers usually cost?
My son says the JR Pass isn’t worth it—what’s your take?
For accommodations, we’re leaning toward mid-range hotels with good value rather than apartments. Any great tips?
I know I’m asking a lot of questions—I really appreciate anyone who can point me in the right direction.

I’d love to get some feedback on the itinerary I’m considering, since I’ll be using public transport. The order might not be ideal:
-Fukuoka: 4 days (including 1 day in Yanagawa, and I’d also like to visit Yutoku Inari Shrine)
-Nagasaki: 2 days (I’m a bit unsure about including it)
-Kumamoto: 2 days (including 1 day in Yamaga)
-Beppu: 2 or 3 days (1 day in Kitsuki)
-Yufuin: 2 days
I was also thinking about adding Ukiha and Usuki, but I’m not sure how to fit them in.

Bonjour. Je suis en train de faire une réservation pour ma première visite au japon en juillet 2019. J'y vais avec ma fille de 16 ans et notre but c'est de découvrir plusieurs villes et régions. Qu'est-ce que vous pensez de l'idée de commencer à Sapporo (il y a de vol direct de Helsinki) et de retourner par Fukuoka (vol direct aussi). Pour nous déplacer on pense avoir des carte JR. Qu'est-ce que vous pensez? Est-ce que je devrai penser d'une autre manière pour un voyage d'une douzaine de jours?

Nous aimerions partir au Japon en septembre prochain et si possible sans agence! Nous avons déjà beaucoup voyagé à travers le monde de cette manière mais, nous étions beaucoup plus jeunes et ''ce n'était pas au Japon''.
Mes questions sont d'ordres pratiques, à savoir : Le Japon se visite de manière itinérante, donc refaire les bagages tous les deux ou trois jours et prendre le train ou le bus etc, ! Si l'on se trouve à Tokyo par exemple, comment fait 'on ? un taxi , un bus ou autre mais pour se rendre où et à quel endroit ? Il doit y avoir une multitude de gares ou d'arrêts de bus dans cette immense ville ou l'anglais n'est pas courant ? Ne perdons nous pas trop de temps à chercher ce que l'on doit faire et comment le faire ? Est-ce vraiment pratique pour des personnes de 70 ans , même si l'on est en pleine forme… C'est vraiment la chose qui me turlupine, c'est devoir être sur le trottoir sans vraiment être sur de trouver de l'aide et de se perdre .
Le Japon, ce n'est pas New-York ou Paris voir même Bangkok, c'est vraiment un endroit des plus dépaysant qui ne ressemble à aucun autre endroit dans le monde. Je voulais ajouter que nous sommes très très visite, nous prenons tout notre temps pour chaque endroit donc les voyages en groupe ne sont pas notre tasse de thé ! Bref ...

Jour 4 : activation de la JR Pass, train de Tokyo au pied du Mont Fuji. Des arrêts suggérés ou c'est déjà assez long?
Jour 5 : coucher aux alentours du Mont Fuji en espérant de voir un lever de soleil sur la montagne, on est prêts à se lever tôt :) À quel endroit coucher pour avoir cette chance? Est-ce qu'on devrait ajouter une 3e nuit sur place?
Jour 6 ou 7 : train vers Hiroshima. Ensuite on hésite, est-ce qu'on couche entre Hiroshima et Kyoto - des suggestions? Ou on ajoute une nuit de plus à Kyoto?
Le reste c'est Kyoto suivie des Alpes mais je reviendrai avec d'autres questions ensuite :)

Day 7: Sasebo + Kujukushima Pearl + fireworks show Day 8: Karatsu (Yobuko market + cave + cape) + Matsuri Kanchi Day 9: Kashima + garden + Tara Day 10: Higashi Sonogi, overnight in Nagasaki. Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Je pars en famille (2 enfants de 7 et 11 ans) au Japon à l'été 2020. Les billets d'avions sont pris et je commence à regarder l'itinéraire (pour répartir les couts d'hotel)
J'ai prévu l'itinéraire ci dessous et je me pose quelques questions.
Est ce que Osaka vaut le coup et autant de temps ?
Est ce qu'il vaut mieux bouger d'hotel en hotel ou plutot rayonner depuis une place (Osaka / Kyoto ?) et bouger en train. Dans ce cas, plutot Kyoto ou Osaka ou un bon plan ;-) ?
Certains guides proposent Kurashiki et Kobe, ca vaut aussi une pause ?
On prévoit 18 jours sur place. Pour Tokyo on aura 1 jour aux JOs donc pas de visite.

Nous avons nos billets pour le Japon (notre 4ième fois) et cette fois-ci, j'hésites entre Shikoku et Kyushu.
Pour Kyushu, nous aurions environ 9-10 jours car je veux être à Tokyo pour ma fête. Nous y serons en février. (et oui, je comprends que 10 jours ce n'est pas beaucoup, mais nous devons faire avec...)
Quel genre d'itinéraire vous me suggérer? Nous sommes ouvert à tout, ou presque. Pour avoir rester 1 jour à Fukuoka il y a 7 ans, nous avions aimé notre première impression de la ville. Donc, c'est sûr qu'on aimerait y consacrer peut-être un peu de temps. pour le reste, je suis ouvert à vos idées
Pour Shikoku, je comprends qu'il faut idéalement, louer une auto. Je ne crois pas avoir de problème à convaincre mon conjoint de le faire. Ça semble être une région peu visité par les étrangers et un peu plus "relax" que le reste du pays. Bref....

Logiquement, nous avons prévu de partir avec ma femme au Japon mi Mai 2021 (On verra si cela est possible étant donné le contexte actuel). J'essaye tant bien que mal de préparer un itinéraire sympathique mais cela s'avère beaucoup plus complexe que prévu étant donné le nombre de choses incroyables que ce pays propose. Sachant que nous sommes intéressés par pratiquement tout (ville, nature, gastronomie...) et surtout on aime mixer et varier les journées.
Honnêtement, les choix a réaliser sont compliqués. Etant donné que ça sera notre premier voyage au Japon, nous souhaitons faire les incontournables bien entendu (mais je sens bien qu'il va falloir choisir les incontournables des incontournables 😉 )
Du coup, je suis intéressé par vos avis et conseils concernant une première ébauche que j'ai prévu.

Je me pose la question pour Osaka notamment (3 soirs) et Kyoto sur 4 jours complets ou j'ai un peu peur d'une "lassitude" concernant les temples même si ils ont l'air magnifique (sachant que ces 4j sont à Kyoto même).
_Il nous semble possible d'ajouter une journée dans le circuit mais je ne sais pas ou cela serait le plus judicieux (Tokyo, Nikko, Nara, Uji, Himeji, Kyoto, Miyajima ou autres)

Bonjour à tous
je prépare mon deuxième voyage au Japon qui se fera fin juin/deux premières semaines de juillet 2020 pour un total de 3 semaines. Destination Kyushu et Okinawa - par précaution nous commencerons par quelques jours sur Okinawa. Nous atterrissons directement à Fukuoka (sur Finnair via Helsinki) et repartons de même (sur JAL via Tokyo). Je sais que ce n'est pas la période idéale il risque de pleuvoir et d'y avoir peut être des typhons, mais nous ferons avec :)
Avez vous des conseils ? mon compagnon est plus âgé que moi (il a 71 ans) et je voudrais éviter de trop bouger sur les îles (je préfère faire des haltes en général de 3 jours pour profiter des endroits que nous visitons). En même temps pour Okinawa ne pas m'éloigner de l'île principale est dommage - mais j'ai du mal à mettre en place un itinéraire avec des vols internes par exemple vers Miyakijima qui ne coutent pas trop chers. Je pensais pouvoir partir de Fukuoka et revenir à Kagoshima (point de départ de nos visites de Kyushu) mais j'ai l'impression que ce n'est pas possible. Je n'arrive pas à voir si c'est possible d'arriver à Miyakijima en partant de Fukuoka, et repartir de Naha vers le Kyushu.
Par ailleurs - sur le site de la compagnie Peach les vols ne sont déjà plus disponibles, est-ce que c'est parce que les réservations ne sont pas encore ouvertes ou qu'il n'y a déjà plus de place ?

L’itinéraire envisagé est fait de classiques, sur un rythme que j’espère suffisamment « slow » pour que tout le monde puisse profiter de l’ambiance locale.

Je me pose la question de la gestion du transport dans les Alpes japonaises. J’ai trouvé quelques discussions intéressantes à ce sujet (notamment https://voyageforum.com/v.f?post=9356513;search_string=takayama) qui m’orientent déjà mais je souhaiterais confirmer.
- L’option transport en commun me fait craindre la gestion des valises pour toute la famille entre chaque étape, mais certains mentionnent des livraisons de bagages gérées par les hôtels d’étapes en étapes ? D'autre part, transiter de Takayama vers Kanazawa en passant par Ainokura semble compliqué, il faudrait remplacer par la plus classique Shirakawago. => Qu’en pensez-vous ?
- L’option alternative serait de louer une voiture avant de se rendre à Magome et de la rendre à Kanazawa en arrivant (le trajet Kanazawa=>Tokyo ayant l’air direct en train). Cette option simplifierait la logistique avec les bagages et pourrait nous apporter plus de souplesse dans nos déplacements. Le principal (seul ?) inconvénient mentionné dans les discussions est le supplément pour déposer la voiture dans une autre préfecture mais ce n’est pas forcément un problème. => Avez-vous une idée de ce coût ? => Louriez-vous plutôt à Kyoto pour plus de facilité ? Ou à Nagoya, le trajet Kyoto=>Nagoya semblant plus commode en train (mais Nagoya plus grande ville que Kyoto = plus de galères en voitures? ) ? Ou à Nakatsugawa ? => Avez-vous un site à me conseiller pour louer ?

Hi there,
A few friends and I are planning our trip to Japan for next autumn. This will be my first time traveling, which is why we’ve decided to go for a big trip of at least 2 months, maybe even 3.
So far, we’ve estimated the budget to be between 7,000 and 10,000 € per person for the stay. I’m not sure if that’s too high or too low, considering we’ll be moving around a lot.
Here’s a summary of the route we’d like to take:
First, we definitely want to visit the classics like Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. Then head toward Mount Fuji with Fujiyoshida and the surrounding area. We’d also like to visit some less touristy, more authentic spots like the Wakayama region. We’d like to check out some mountain or countryside villages like Shirakawa-go for a few hikes. We’re still debating whether to visit Miyajima and Hiroshima since we’re not sure we’ll have enough time. And we sadly had to cut Hokkaido from our list for the same reason.
I won’t go into every detail since we’ve mapped out over twenty places, but those are the main highlights.
As for our travel style:
We want to take our time. Not try to cram in as much as possible without any breaks or enjoyment. Most of the time, we’ll be staying in Airbnbs and youth hostels. For food, we’ll mix it up between restaurants, pre-made meals, and cooking our own. For transportation, we’re considering renting a car to reach villages in the countryside. (I’m a bit nervous about the road rules over there.) For activities, one or two a day seems reasonable. (Both free and paid ones.) But I have no idea how much souvenirs might cost. I’ve often read on forums that it’s between 200 and 600 €?
My questions:

A few friends and I are planning our trip to Japan for next autumn. This will be my first time traveling, which is why we’ve decided to go for a big trip of at least 2 months, maybe even 3.
So far, we’ve estimated the budget to be between 7,000 and 10,000 € per person for the stay. I’m not sure if that’s too high or too low, considering we’ll be moving around a lot.
Here’s a summary of the route we’d like to take:
First, we definitely want to visit the classics like Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. Then head toward Mount Fuji with Fujiyoshida and the surrounding area. We’d also like to visit some less touristy, more authentic spots like the Wakayama region. We’d like to check out some mountain or countryside villages like Shirakawa-go for a few hikes. We’re still debating whether to visit Miyajima and Hiroshima since we’re not sure we’ll have enough time. And we sadly had to cut Hokkaido from our list for the same reason.
I won’t go into every detail since we’ve mapped out over twenty places, but those are the main highlights.
As for our travel style:
We want to take our time. Not try to cram in as much as possible without any breaks or enjoyment. Most of the time, we’ll be staying in Airbnbs and youth hostels. For food, we’ll mix it up between restaurants, pre-made meals, and cooking our own. For transportation, we’re considering renting a car to reach villages in the countryside. (I’m a bit nervous about the road rules over there.) For activities, one or two a day seems reasonable. (Both free and paid ones.) But I have no idea how much souvenirs might cost. I’ve often read on forums that it’s between 200 and 600 €?

Idéalement imabari-onomichi avec nuit sur une des îles) J7-8-9-10: Kyoto ( avec journée a Nara et Universal studio d'Osaka) J11 nuit près aéroport de Kansai car départ tôt pour la France Sur cet itinéraire JR pass 7 jours? Avis logement et répartition des nuits... Ça me paraît un marathon, non?
Itinéraire 2: je zappe Tokyo ( pour mieux y revenir une autre fois?). Vol AR osaka J1-2-3: Kyoto J4-5: Hiroshima et miyajima J6-8: shimanami kaido ( ferry Hiroshima- Matsuyama puis train jusqu'à ibamari). Nuit sur une des îles. I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too. We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now. We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.
So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.
For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto
What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

On Tuesday, we’ll pick up a rental car at Itami Airport for a 6-day/5-night road trip around Shikoku: - 2 nights in the Iya Valley - Thursday morning, we’ll head to Matsuyama for 2 nights. - Saturday, we’ll visit Mima (town, a few temples + overnight stay) and return on Sunday to drop off the car in Osaka. We’ll leave very early on Monday the 26th by plane for Aomori in northern Honshu, where we’ll pick up another rental car at the airport for a 5-day/4-night trip: - Day 1: Tsugaru Peninsula (Takayam Inari, Cape Tappi, Kanita); overnight in Kanita - Day 2: Ferry transfer to the Mutsu Peninsula (cliffs, Lake Usori); overnight in Shimofuro - Day 3: Head to the Hakkoda Mountains and onsens galore; overnight TBD - Day 4: Return the car in Aomori by noon and explore the city before taking the train to Tokyo in the evening We’ll spend Friday night in Tokyo, wander around on Saturday, and head home on Sunday.

We’re not afraid of driving, even in the mountains and on the left side! Just wondering, are we going to be rushing, or is this manageable? AI says it’s all good, but it’s not the one driving... Any tips for booking accommodations in the Iya Valley? Not many places have email addresses or websites (I know Booking.com exists, but not all listings are on there... and given the season, I think it’s better to book ahead!). Same question applies for northern Honshu. For the rental car, I’m thinking of going with Alamo since at least it’s in French and straightforward, but are there any direct rental companies with user-friendly websites (Toyota Rentacar, ugh... 🏴☠️)? Another question: With so many trains, is it even necessary to book them in advance? Can we just go to the ticket counter and grab seats on the spot? For paying for the rental car, do we need a credit or debit card?

For this first visit, I’m thinking of sticking to the Kyoto and Osaka area… saving Tokyo for another trip. Do you think that’s a good choice for a first-time visit?
I’ve put together a little itinerary below to get some feedback from those in the know. I’m only counting the days we’re actually there, not travel days.
Day 1: Kyoto Ginkaku-ji – Philosopher’s Path with stops at a few shrines temples Eikan-dō and Nanzen-ji visit to the Samurai Ninja Museum in the late afternoon
Day 2: Kyoto Fushimi Inari (allow 4 hours for the hike through the park) visit to Sanjūsangen-dō temple Shōseien garden participate in a tea ceremony
Day 3: Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera temple stroll through the historic district up to Kennin-ji temple visit Kennin-ji temple Yasaka-jinja shrine and Gion district in the late afternoon return to the hotel via Pontochō Street
Day 4: Kyoto visit Kinkaku-ji and Nijō Castle visit the Imperial Palace gardens end the day in the shopping streets (Shibkyogoku and Teramachi, among others)

We’d like to get a (very rough) sense of just how fast Asia is moving compared to what we see in the West (we’re from Quebec). For now, our very preliminary list includes Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore. There are obviously plenty of other options—Seoul, Shanghai, etc.
