I’ve booked a trip to Prague with my mum in mid-September.

Since I already know the city, I’d love to see something else, but I’m realizing that transport is really slow.

I wanted to go to Karlovy Vary, but it takes longer than I thought… Plus, we won’t be staying near the train station.

So I’m looking for a day trip that’s MAXIMUM 1 hour away by transport.

I really don’t like spending too much time on transport, so if it’s not doable, I’ll just skip it.

If there’s nothing accessible, I won’t bother with day trips—it’s not a big deal.

Another fresh travel journal!

The context: For my 60th birthday, I had planned to take my family (kids + partners) for a week in Gran Canaria, at an all-inclusive hotel, but with the firm intention of exploring and hiking. The deal was to meet up at least in the evenings to spend time together, if my pace didn’t suit them. Personally, I’m not into beaches and lazing around, but my daughter-in-law is pretty cool. We were going to be together, do what we liked, and all would be well. Unfortunately, five days before departure, my mother-in-law passed away, and of course, we had to cancel everything. I was able to get a refund for a lot of things, including the hotel despite missing the free cancellation deadline (really cool of them), and I got a one-year credit for the full price of the flight tickets. So, we tried to plan the same thing for my kids, but with their schedules, we couldn’t find a date. I had to find a destination served by Iberia, far enough to use up my credit. We don’t know the Caribbean, we needed sun and a bit of rest, so the Dominican Republic won out. But no way were we going to mess up by staying in an all-inclusive hotel and only visiting the island’s paradise beaches… (we’ll get back to that). So, as usual, I put together a little road trip with a rental car.

Here we go!!!!

Day 1: Crossing the Atlantic Super early departure for Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport. A 3-hour layover in Madrid (my wife’s had enough of flight delays, so I played it safe). Flight to Santo Domingo without any issues. The luggage arrived, the driver I’d booked was there, everything went smoothly. We got to our hotel in the Zona Colonial around 4 PM. Bad luck—it’s on a cute little square where there was supposed to be neighborhood activity in the evening. It’s completely under construction! Too bad! We decided to head to the Malecón, a sort of local Promenade des Anglais, except there are no English people. It’s nice, safe, spacious, and by the ocean. We walked for a while, and as happy hour rolled around, I started my training as an intern in rum-based cocktails. A mojito, classic, but it’s amazing to be sipping the drink in the warmth, right by the big blue. On the way back to the hotel, we grabbed some bananas, ate them in the room, and then bedtime.

The plus: We actually left! The minus: There isn’t one

I’m planning to cycle from Paris to Prague in three weeks. It’s the worst time of year temperature-wise, especially since I’m pretty sensitive to the cold. But I don’t have a choice about either the timing or the destination (it’s a break between two jobs that just happens to fall during this period, and I’m heading to Prague to meet friends for a specific event in mid-February).

So it’s going to be *very* cold. And while I’ve done a few relaxed one- to two-week bike trips before, I’ve never cycled in winter. That’s why I’d love your advice on two things! :)

1- Accommodation along the route On my previous trips, the weather was more forgiving, so I always brought my tent and didn’t have to worry about accommodation logistics. But this time, it’s a whole different story—I won’t be able to sleep outside (too cold + it gets dark too early). So I need to plan all my lodging in advance.

I’ve looked at a few existing threads about cycling from Paris to Prague, but they all focus on campsites/tents since the timing allowed for outdoor sleeping. Does anyone know: 1- If those campsites, which seem to be fairly evenly spaced along the route, have winter facilities (I assume most close in winter, but you never know)? This is especially important for the German and Czech sections (I’ll be fine in France). 2- How easy it is to find affordable youth hostels everywhere, and if so, whether I should book them in advance?

2- Winter cycling gear Since I’ve never cycled in winter before, I don’t have the right gear. I’m particularly concerned about gloves and shoes, since my extremities will take a beating. What shoes would you recommend for temperatures around 0°C? I don’t plan to cycle in winter again after this, and all my other trips have been in regular running shoes, which worked just fine for me. So I’d prefer not to spend a fortune on super technical gear that I’ll only use once. But I also don’t want to skimp on cold protection—being freezing could ruin the whole trip. So if the only solution is "super technical" shoes, I’ll go for it.

We’re heading to Alsace as a couple right after Christmas for 4 days. After that, we’d like to continue east by car to spend New Year’s Eve there.

We’re torn between Prague and Zurich. Which one would you recommend? In terms of driving convenience (distance isn’t an issue for us), things to see, and overall vibe. I’ve read, for example, that Czechs aren’t very welcoming, and it’s really important for us to have a good connection with the locals. On the other hand, I’m worried Zurich might be less interesting to visit...

Maybe you have other city suggestions?

Ce sont mes derniers souvenirs de voyage à l'étranger, c'était avant … avant que la pandémie de la Covid-19 ne s'abatte sur notre planète et contrarie (en autre !) nos désirs de voyages loin de chez nous. Un récit à propos d'une dernière escale dans les Caraïbes, elle date du début mars et c'était donc en République Dominicaine. Ce carnet aborde principalement le souvenir d'une échappée le long d'une « route » hors des sentiers battus, dans le nord de l'île. Une région bien moins fréquentée et donc moins connue que les très courus sites balnéaires de cette grande île tropicale. Un récit qui est également l'occasion pour moi de partager dans une seconde partie quelques autres souvenirs de voyage en Rep. Dom. Ils sont un peu plus anciens et concernent quelques uns des incontournables sites à visiter de la destination.

L'escale approche. Peu à peu, la côte se fait plus nette, le soleil a fait disparaître la nébulosité et la plage d'Amber Cove apparaît dans toute sa beauté.



Le trio qui fait le charme des îles tropicales est bien présent sous nos yeux : des eaux bleues, du sable clair bordé d'une palmeraie et un versant verdoyant qui en impose en surplomb du rivage. Un coquet clocher aux tonalités jaune et rose bonbon émerge au-dessus de cette étendue de palmes. Pour afficher la nationalité de l'île, les couleurs sont hissées haut. On reconnaît les carrés rouge et bleu séparés d'une croix blanche du drapeau de la République Dominicaine.



Nous sommes précisément sur la côte nord de l'île, dans la région de l'ancienne ville coloniale espagnole de Puerto Plata.

Un dernier coup d’œil sur la jolie baie encadrée de promontoires rocheux en fond de décor et bordée d'une langue de terre au vert lumineux qui défile juste sous nos yeux.



A peine débarqués du navire, on embarque à nouveau … mais sur un tout autre moyen de transport, finie la navigation, on prend place maintenant sur un drôle de véhicule hybride. Un genre de machine à grosses roues, dans un style intermédiaire entre camion et bus d'aventures tout-terrain. De simples banquettes font offices de sièges, quant aux dossiers et aux montants métalliques, ils sont tous rembourrés et capitonnés … On le comprend vite, la route, enfin la piste qui s'annonce pour cette virée risque d'être chaotique. Pas de doute, il ne doit pas s'agir d'un long ruban de bitume très tranquille !

Pour l'instant nous traversons la paisible petite ville de Maimon. Une agglomération sans grand intérêt si ce n'est d'avoir un aperçu de la vie quotidienne locale. Des enfants bruyants jouent dans la cour de l'école et quelques habitantes font leurs achats dans les boutiques, la plupart sont de simples maisons/cases comme d'ailleurs beaucoup d'habitations. En voici deux exemples assez représentatifs du style de l'habitat local. Une simple maison recouverte de tôles ondulées mais dont les murs extérieurs sont agrémentés d'une teinte bleutée. C'est un aspect des plus courants dans la petite cité.





Plus loin, nous passons devant une maison un peu plus cossue : un propret jardinet et des grilles ouvragées entourent cette demeure plus élaborée et dont on imagine le meilleur confort intérieur.



Passons la périphérie urbaine, place à la campagne. On le constate dès le début du trajet, les terrains aux abords de la voie sont détrempés voire inondés. Le chauffeur, sympa, nous informe que de récentes et fortes intempéries ont quelque peu endommagé la piste que nous devons emprunter … Au fond de cette baie, le courant et les torrents ont charrié des quantités de branchages, certains sont encore là, amassés au bord du rivage bordé de mangrove.





Sur ce tronçon, un torrent a emporté une partie de la route, le passage se fait désormais sur une seule voie constituée de terre battue.

Après tant de voyages, voilà que je poste mon tout premier post sur ce forum, pour recevoir vos précieux conseils concernant cette ville qui m'attire depuis tant d'années.

Désolée par avance pour ce long message ^^

J'aurais plusieurs questions concernant Prague (j'ai fais mes propres recherches en parallèle, mais il est toujours plus "rassurant" d'avoir de "vrais" avis).

Je pars donc, visiter la Capitale Tchèque, pour la première fois, début Novembre, avec une amie.

Ma première question sera donc la suivante : La ville est elle "safe" le soir ? Y'a t-il des coins, à éviter ? Nous n'avons pas prévu de sortir faire la fête, mais je ne compte pas partir de Prague sans avoir été boire une bonne bière (ou deux) :)

Nous partons pour 7 jours, mais je ne trouve que des itinéraires pour 3/4j sur Internet. J'ai essayé de faire un petit mix de tout ce que j'ai pu trouver. Il ne me restera plus qu'à mettre tout ça en ordre pour planifier nos journées au mieux.

Y'a t-il des choses touristiques ou non, à n'absolument pas rater ? Ou au contraire des choses un peu "surcotées" à laisser de côté ?

J'ai pour le moment mit dans la liste : - Château de Prague - Old town square + Astronomical clock - Letna Park - John Lennon Wall - St Vitus Cathedral - Wenceslas Square - National Museum - Municipal House - Zoo - Pretrin Tower - Dancing house - Museum Achemists and Magicians of Old Prague

Nous aimerions également pouvoir nous rendre à un match de hockey (je ne sais pas si la saison aura reprit, à cause du COVID... Nous aviserons sur place).

Et également pouvoir faire un ou deux "day trips". Lesquels seraient, selon-vous les meilleurs choix à cette période de l'année (peut-être avez-vous, d'autres suggestions ?) - Cesky Krumlov - Karlovy Vary - Kutna Hora - National Park Bohemian Switzerland - Aquaplace - Dresden - Pilsen

Y'a t-il des choses/lieux/activités/restaurants/bars totalement insolites ?
