Corozal)
Take a bus from Santa Elena via
La Libertad to Bethel. Transportes Pinita bus, 5h00, 9h00, 3½ to 4 hours, US$3.25. The bus continues to the lancha point for the boat ride, US$0.65. However, if the bus does not wait you will have to take a lancha from the immigration point, 20 min ferry ride, US$6.50 to Frontera Echeverría/
Corozal. A dirt road leads up 18km to the Frontier Highway (35km to the San Javier junction for Lacanjá and
Bonampak). From the border it is 4hrs by bus to
Palenque, US$5.50. To get to
Palenque in 1 day, take the 5h00 bus from Santa Elena and catch a pick-up, bus or tour bus.
Pipiles/BeneméritoGet to Sayaxché, 60km, and then take a boat down the Río de la Pasión, to teh military post at Pipiles (exit stamp must be given here - if you need a Mexican tourist card it's advisable to get it in advance to avoi paying bribes at the border) and on to the town of Benemérito. There are trading boats wich takes 8 hours, US$5; motorized cargo canoe US$5-10, 8 hours; private launch US$100, 4 hours. From Benemérito, buses at 6h00, 7h00, 8h00 and 13h00 to immigration just past the Río Lacantún (or hitch in a truck); buses wait here before continuig to
Palenque on an unpaved road; 7-12 hrs bye bus Benemérito-
Palenque (more in the wet) Take a hammock, mosquito net, food and insect repellet; the only accomodation betwee Sayaxché and
Palenque are a few rooms in Benemérito, and dollars cannot be exchanged.
