Border Crossing Info- The Immigration checkpoints for both
Laos and
Thailand are at the new Friendship Bridge 4 (
Bokeo Bridge) over the
Mekong about 10 km south of Chiang Khong and Huay Xay towns at grid code LP270 on this map
HERE. Passenger boat service across the
Mekong is now only for local people.
Immigration Checkpoints at the bridge are open 06:00 to 22:00 daily. Walking or cycling over the bridge is not allowed.

Shuttle buses take people back and forth over the bridge for 25 or 30 baht and are big buses with cargo bays that can take bicycles across for an extra 100 baht.
There may be limited shuttle bus service between 18:00 and 21:00 after the scheduled service ends per the sign above. Shuttle buses sometimes depart from the Lao side after 18:00 if there are enough passengers and people on the Thai side may be able to use these buses as they return to
Laos over the bridge but the shuttle bus desk isn't open at these later times on the Thai side so passengers must look for these buses and talk to the driver directly. The shuttle buses look like the one in the picture above - blue and white with orange stripe.
Latest info Sept. 2017 is that motorbikes can now be driven over the Friendship Bridge with a police escort at an extra cost of 500 baht. No motorbikes over 250 cc size can be taken into
Laos or operated there. Insurance agents have offices in Huay Xay selling insurance for motorbikes as required by law.
