Bonjour, à tous et toutes qui m’avez déjà aidé pour mes voyages précédents, et à ceux et celles qui ont rejoint le forum depuis.
J’ai commencé à penser ce voyage pour mai 2018; mais 2 événements heureux dans ma famille (nous sommes déjà grands parents) pour mars et mai, me font reporter l’aventure en septembre de cette même année.
Et donc on repique à l’ouest pour une troisième fois et clore ainsi cette superbe trilogie.
J’ai construit un début de projet que je vous livre. Avec Anne mon épouse, nous aimons bien randonner, prendre parfois notre temps, et n’empruntons que des pistes relativement faciles. Je propose un calendrier qui pourra être modifié, avec vos remarques et conseils, et qui peut supporter 2 ou 3 jours de plus.

Une journée de perdue pour rallier LA à PHX.
La différence de prix par rapport à une boucle PHX/PHX est largement compensée par le gain de temps et de fatigue inutile.
Une journée à Sedona, c'est peu.
Rallier Sedona à Chinle c'est 3h40 sans arrêt et en vol direct (que faire, que voir pendant le trajet?)
et 4h en passant par Petrified Forest NP.
Les randos en septembre dans le sud Arizona ... 😕 végétation pauvre et grosses chaleurs.

Très très mauvais plan ... 😕 Si jamais ton vol transatlantique a du retard à LA, et que vol suivant a déjà décollé, que faites vous? Vos vols ne sont pas des segments d'un seul trajet et les compagnies n'ont aucun accord, donc, en rade à LAX ... avec un billet payé, inutile et non remboursable....
Re salut Alain, j’ai bien noté que BA propose ce vol; bon, je suis plutôt Air France, et je me donne encore un peu de temps. je remarque que les vols AF, partent de Paris pour LA à 10h30, et arrivent vers 12h30 heure locale. Avec un vol interne LA Phoenix vers 16h, l’arrivée est à la même heure que BA. On peut se donner 3h ou plus pour le vol suivant. Mais je commence à surveiller les propositions des compagnies.
Salut Jean Pierre, Oui j’ai vu que Air France et Delta proposent Phœnix via SLC et NY. A suivre. Cela dit, les vols en A380 pour LAX, et retour sont bien agréables.

Je n'ai pas encore pris mes billets bien sûr, et suis à l'affut d'offres intéressantes, Paris Phoenix, ou Paris-LA, LA-Phoenix, et retour.
Je vais commencer aussi à me pencher sur les hôtels du parcours, alors si vous avez des bons plans, sur le circuit provisoire que j'ai établi, je vous remercie.

Dans le Colorado, il y a de quoi faire aussi :
- Ouray, située entre Durango et Montrose , où nous étions en juillet 2016 (j'en parle sur le carnet) ;
- le Curecanti NRA (https://www.nps.gov/cure/index.htm), à l'Est du Black Canyon of The Gunnison, où nous sommes allés lors de notre circuit de juillet 2013 ;
Salut, je reviens un peu dans mon carnet et ma préparation, car les choses commencent à se préciser. Les ESTA sont acquis, et maintenant commence la surveillance des possibilités de vols entre la France et l'Arizona.
Pour le moment, British Airways, offre la meilleure prestation financière pour un Paris-Phoenix, à près de 1800€ avant réservation des sièges.
Pour le même parcours, Air France, que je préfère quand même est à près de 2000€, avant sièges.
L'autre option, en ce moment, serait un Paris-Los Angeles, par Air France, sur A380, A/R direct, à
1048€, hors sièges. Arrivée à LA, à 12h50, et possibilité dans l'après midi, de prendre une ligne intérieure, pour Phoenix. Coût 326€ pour deux, et arrivée possible autour de 17h30. Voila le topo.
Qu'en pensez vous?
Et à l'aéroport de LA, il y a possibilité de vol Delta pour PHX à 14h45, et American A, à 16h20. Je sais que l'arrivée Air France et le hub de Delta sont proches. Qu'en est il de AA?

Si je ne me trompe pas (sachant que les choses évoluent vites) Air France ne fait pas encore payer le choix des sièges à l'inverse des compagnies US et UK. Si c'est bien encore le cas, c'est un élément à prendre en compte dans le budget avion ! Plus proche dr Sedona, ta première étape, tu as aussi Vegas. Il y souvent de très bons prix pour LAS avec des correspondances sympa.
Merci Charline, mais les choses ont évolué. Air France propose désormais des vols "light", "standard" et "standard+". Pour le light, tu as le bagage soute en option, et pour 40€ de plus tu as le standard, avec bagage en soute de 23kg. Et si tu prends tes places au moment de la réservation, ça va de 20€ à 70€. Tu le fais pour éviter de te retrouver séparé de ton conjoint pendant toute la durée du vol. Donc Air France propose maintenant des vols avec options.
Dans mon cas ça donne:
Standard:262€; siège:40€, dans l'A380 à l'étage c'est pas mal. ce qui met mes vols à 1208€.
A ça je rajouterai le vol intérieur, LAX-PHX et j'arrive à 1534€. C'est actuellement le prix le plus intéressant que je trouve, si je veux voyager dans d'assez bonnes conditions.

Bon, je voyage souvent avec Air france, mais leur Paris Phoenix est très cher, et British Airways, propose le vol, moité moins cher. Pour quelle raison? As tu déjà voyagé avec eux? Je pense que ce sera mon choix, d'autan qu'il n'y a pas à l'aller, d'escale sur le sol américain.

Nous partons de Nantes et assez souvent avec Iberia (One World aussi)
Tu trouveras des vols, pour septembre, à des prix défiant toute concurrence, avec BA. Saute dessus, car je ne suis pas certain que cette offre dure encore longtemps. J'ai acheté un Nantes/Atlanta vendredi soir, 460€. Phoenix depuis CDG est dans le même ordre de prix (source Google flight il y a 10 minutes)
Salut Alain, ça y est vols réservés Paris-Phoenix via Londres, A/R du 12/09 au 2/10; cela pour 1026€, sièges Londres-Phoenix compris. Peux tu me dire si à Londres, les bagages suivent? Et le bagage en soute à 23kgs est me semble t'il compris. C'est une bonne option.
Mes expériences antérieures m'autorisent seulement à déclarer que dans mon cas:
- oui, les bagages ont suivi.
- oui pour une valise de 23 kg - pesée très tatillonne au retour.
Je ne peux donc, à mon grand regret, affirmer quoi que ce soit.
BA a un service client compétent qui pourra répondre à tes questions.

Testés à Tucson:
- Hilton Garden Inn excentré, proche de l'aéroport - grandes chambres - excellent petit déjeuner.
- BW RoyalSun Inn and Suites: moyen+, quartier qui craint un peu, resto sur place basique
- Congress Hotel vieux bâtiment chargé d'histoire au centre ville - moyen
Tucson abrite également un Flat Iron ( +petit qu'à NYC 🙂 )

Mais je voudrais vous demander si vous connaissez cette location Air B'nB à Chinle. Ville qui présente je crois un seul, mais important intérêt, c'est d'être à proximité du Canyon de Chelly, et l'hôtellerie, faible y est chère. Je joins deux captures d'écran de l'annonce, le prix et la proximité du Canyon. Merci.

Bonjour, je reviens vous solliciter sur mon parcours prévu en septembre prochain. Somme toute assez classique pour une boucle Phoenix-Phoenix, sur une vingtaine de jours. Je rappelle que je possède les ESTA, que les vols Paris Phoenix sont réservés sur British Airways, et que les hôtels sont réservés, avec option annulation gratuite. Donc le parcours est modifiable, avec la contrainte du retour en France. Il y a 2 cases vides, les 30/09 et 01/10. Un impératif, être le 2/10 aux environs de midi à l'aéroport de Phoenix. Si vous avez des commentaires, des conseils, sur les hôtels, les routes, sachant, que j'ai réservé les services de Evelyn Fredericks pour la matinée du 15 septembre autour de Tuba City. Merci.

Nous avons un bon souvenir du vol avec BA sur Paris Phoenix en passant par Londres. Ca devrait bien se passer, c'était une solution de raison. Pour vos hôtels je confirme deux très jolis choix aussi pour les avoir pratiqués : le GlobeTrotter Lodge à Holbrook très sympa (traversez la route et allez faire des photos en face au Wigwam) et le Sandia Peak Inn à Albuquerque (nous avions pris la chambre avec baignoire spa). Si vous faites l'Apache Trail regardez mon carnet de 2015 il y a une petite carte de cette route, très utile (arrêt à Tortilla Flat recommandé). Et en montant sur Sedona le Oak Creek Canyon, magnifique. Have fun !

Merci Chris; tu penses bien que j'avais déjà lu ton récit, une véritable mine de renseignements. Je ne sais pas encore si je choisirai l'Apache trail pour nos 2 derniers jours, ou Organ Pipe, à l’extrême sud ouest. Je me donne un peu de temps. Merci pour les hôtels.
Organ Pipe est un parc perdu au milieu de nulle part, à la végétation spécifique ( Organ Pipe ... justement) et ... corollaire ... peu de monde, MAIS:
- la température sera encore très élevée
- un AR dans la journée depuis Tucson est peu recommandable
- il faut être attiré par ce type de relief et de végétation
- 1 seule possibilité d'hébergement (assez rudimentaire) à Ajo: le Siesta Motel ( si, si !) et peu de possibilités de restauration.
Qu ' y a t il à voir à Ajo?
Ajo est un village très ... mexicain: grande place bordée d'arcades rafraîchissantes bienvenues, une très belle église et une ancienne gare qui sert de Visitor Center ( très bon accueil, normal, vu le nombre de visiteurs 😊) - le tout, bien sûr, d'une blancheur immaculée. Ajoute à cela une vieille mine (la 1ère mine de cuivre d'Arizona avec un tout petit musée) et ...c'est à peu près tout. Sinon, fleurissent des officines d'assurances autos "spécial Mexique" destinés à ceux qui franchissent la frontière. A ce propos: les contrôles sont très stricts et très nombreux même en dehors des check points, car le Mexique, du parc, est à un jet de pierre.
Sur le parc lui même: quelques possibilités de randos et les 21 miles de l'Ajo Mountain Drive mi piste, mi route selon les endroits, one way, très "scenic" avec possibilité d'arrêts pique nique sous les ramadas (attention à la tête, les épines longues et acérées des branches d'ocotillo dépassent parfois du grillage)

Organ Pipe, même si pas fleuri, se singulariserait, et nous permettrait un moment fort, et original. J’y passerai la nuit du 30/09, à Ajo probablement, visiterait le parc le 1/10 tôt le matin, et remonterait vers Phœnix dans l’apres midi, pour préparer le vol du lendemain vers la France. Voilà où j’en suis . Je consulte encore carnets et récits.

Concernant l'option standard, le choix des places peut se faire à partir de 30H avant le départ et gratuitement.
C'est quasiment impossible d'être séparé en s'y prenant 24H avant le départ, que cela soit à l'aller ou au retour (depuis le wifi de l'hôtel du soir précédent par exemple).

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

After years of hoping, waiting, planning, then changing, saving, and searching for the best possible route... we're FINALLY off this summer for a 5-week road trip in the West.
I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!
Anyway, the itinerary has been modified and extended to please everyone (I’m no longer the only one making decisions!!)

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

My 16-year-old son is flying to Grand Rapids with other kids his age. There’s a layover in Detroit. There’s no unaccompanied minor service available. Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
