Hi there! I’m really keen to cycle from Bruges to Amsterdam. Has anyone here done it before? We’re a group of three—is it easy to find accommodation on the go, or should we book ahead? If we do a round trip and take our bikes, would it be simpler to plan two different routes?! Thanks so much! Laurence from Bayonne

I did part of this route, from Bruges to The Hague.

If camping doesn’t put you off, there are plenty of options in this very touristy area.

Hi there,

I cycled around the Netherlands for a few days in autumn 2021. It’s possible to do a loop by heading to Amsterdam through the countryside and then roughly following the coast on the way back.

The cycling network

The cycling network is very dense. Bike paths are most often completely separate from roadways.

For navigation, there are "main cycling routes" with signposts. But the real gem is the "node" system. "Nodes" are the intersections of bike paths, and each one is numbered. To plan your route, just note down the numbers of the nodes you need to pass through. At each intersection, the numbers of the next nodes are displayed. It’s like a modern-day *Hansel and Gretel* trail.

There are maps of the cycling paths available. Regular road maps aren’t much help.

Cyclists follow the rules of the road—they stop at stop signs and traffic lights. When a path is pedestrian-only, they dismount.

The downsides

The only real downside is bike theft. From what I remember, there are 40,000 bike thefts *just in Amsterdam* every year. That’s why I had a massive U-lock and always secured my bike to a fixed point.

The weather

If you’re from Normandy, northern France, or Belgium, you won’t feel out of place—the weather is changeable, and rain showers aren’t uncommon.

There’s also a lot of wind. Sometimes you’ll be battling it for hours.

Accommodation

I had a tent and stayed exclusively in campgrounds.

To find them, I downloaded the Archie campgrounds file and used the Maps.me app on my smartphone. I also did some research online.

Wild camping is prohibited.

The route

I entered the Netherlands from Belgium and returned there at the end of my trip. I crossed the countryside and then followed the coast back down.

Lochristi (Ghent) -> Breda: 116 km Campsite: 10 € + 0.50 € for the shower

Breda -> Utrecht: 86 km Budget Campsite: 7 € + 0.50 € for the shower

Utrecht -> Otterlo: 63 km Campsite Beck en Hei: 10 €

Otterlo -> Amsterdam: 84 km Campsite Zeeburg: 13 €

Amsterdam -> Delft: 86 km Campsite Delfse Hoot: 20 €

Delft -> Renesse: 92 km Campsite International: 20 €

Renesse -> Middelburg: 49 km Stadcamping Zeeland: 14.50 €

Middelburg -> Westende (Belgium): 85 km Campsite KACB: 9 €

For the last leg, I took a ferry between Vlissingen and Breskens. 4.80 € for a 20-minute crossing.

The verdict

City dwellers will probably enjoy cycling through the Dutch countryside, but personally, I didn’t find it exceptional. What I loved most were the towns with their canals. If you’re into climbs, trails, or hills, you’ll be disappointed—it’s a very flat and densely populated country overall.
