Canal latéral à la Garonne à vélo

Bonjour a tous, je compte rejoindre colomiers (toulouse) a l'ile d'oleron cet ete par le canal lateral a la garonne, bordeaux, lacanau, royan en privilegiant les pistes cyclables. J' hesite pour la partie hors canal, langon bordeaux ou sauveterre de guyenne piste labepie par creon quel est le mieux en temps, qualité... je connait la partie creon bordeaux lacanau pour l'avoir fait l'année derniere mais pas le reste
Quelqu'un a t il deja fait en tout ou partie ce trajet, et des renseignements a me donner. merci d'avance

Quand tu seras rendu en Oléron, passes nous voir. Il y a de la place à la maison. Nous, on a quitté le latéral à sa fin et on a un peu galéré pour rejoindre la Lapébie, mais on n'avait pas de cartes, et c'était difficile de trouver des gens pour nous renseigner, c'était les vendanges, et dans un vignobles ...!!! La Lapébie, c'est super, il faut juste se méfier en arrivant à Bordeaux et rejoindre au plus vite le bord du fleuve. A+

je n'avais pas du tout pensé a cette possibilité pourtant je la connaissais, ayant déja fait Lacanau, Cap Ferret, Mios, Hostens .je vais calculer tout ça .si ca ne me rallonge pas trop, je croit que nous allons passer par là, c'est vrai que c'tait sympa,

merci pour l'invitation c'est tres sympa, mais nous serons attendus aux huttes (St Denis), nous avions fait une partie de la Labépie (super) depuis Creon ou nous avions laissé nos véhicules, pour une boucle, c'est vrai que l'arrivée sur bordeaux nous avait un peu refroidi !

Apres le canal du midi l'an dernier nous sommes 4 à vouloir faire le canal de Garonne cet été...nous sommes partis dans l'optique de faire dans le sens Bordeaux-Toulouse plutot que Toulouse-Bordeaux. Quelqu un peut il nous faire partager son experience sur le sujet??

Nous avons fait Toulouse-Lacanau cet ete en tandem+remorque. Nous avons suivi le canal lateral tout le long depuis Toulouse jusqu'a Castelmoron-sur-Lot. Il est tres agreable et tres roulant. Il manque juste une petite partie a la liaison entre Haute-Garonne et Tarn-et-Garonne (de St Rustice a Montech). A signaler notamment la traversee de Moissac, quitter imperativement le canal pour visiter le centre ville et voir notamment l'abbatiale. Puis par lassitude, car c'est quand meme plat, long et monotone a la longue (et a notre gout), nous avons quitte le canal juste apres la traversee d'Agen (qui n'est pas top d'ailleurs) pour rejoindre Castelmoron. camping + baignade amenagee sur le lot (plage de sable) mais village un peu mort. De la nous avons decide de faire un detour pour suivre la veloroute de la vallee de Lot, tres jolie. C'est un parcours fleche qui n'emprunte que des petites routes pittoresques et suit le lot d'Aiguillon a Penne-d'Agenais. A villeneuve-sur-Lot, ville tres agreable, nous avons bifurque pour faire le tour des bastides du Lot-et-garonne : Monflanquin, Villereal, Castillones, Eymet, Duras. Plaisir des yeux parmi ces vieilles pierres ! Idealement il aurait fallu pousser jusqu'a Monpazier mais le temps manquait ... Et l'appel de l'ocean commencait a se faire sentir. De Duras, nous avons rejoint la Lapebie a Sauveterre-de-Guyenne puis tout le long jusqu'a Bordeaux. Attention si tu decides de t'arreter au camping de Sadirac : il est en fait tres proche de Creon, sortir du canal a Creon et ne pas attendre Sadirac ! Traversee de Bordeaux tres bien indiquee sur le site internet de la ville de Bordeaux. La suite tu la connais ...

J'ai fait l'an dernier Cognac - Gard, en passant le long de la mer, dans le sens contraire de ce qui est décrit plus haut, avec un détour au Sud de l'Aquitaine. Je crois que Mio-Bazas est un très bon plan. Et la piste est magnifique, très roulante, aménagée et entretenue. Langon est sympa. Voilà… Moi j'ai adoré.
Il y a des détails sur mon site, évidemment, dont certains hébergements très chouettes.

Merci a tous pour vos réponses et vos conseils. nous allons donc faire apres reflexion, Toulouse Langon Mios Arcachon Royan Oléron. J'espere qu'on tiendra le coup car nous aurons fait la semaine avant Toulouse Sete .Nous avons débuté nos ballades a vélo il y a 3 ans, et depuis on ne peut plus s'en passer...

fait en 14h tranquil on a eviter Montauban car partie du canal qui n'est pas une piste cyclable reprise a moissac puis a la jetée du canal un peut avant langon on s'est taper de la route jusqu'a bordeaux mais de nuit en pleine lune donc tranquil sinon cet été mios langon fait en 6-7 h avec vélo chargé a 45 kg pointe de 35 km et trés bonne moyenne
en gros c possible d'étre rapide et efficasse dans l'axe que tu entreprend car on vas dire que c pas les plus beaux endroits de la terre... ^^

Oui nous l'avons teste en 2006, et avons du rebrousser chemin apres que ma fille soit tombée dans le canal, (entre agde et les onglous) vraiment impraticable, et je ne pense pas que ca est changer depuis.

au mois de mai nous projetons de faire une boucle Toulouse-Bordeaux-Royan-Bayonne-Toulouse (dans les grandes lignes)
Je me demandais si la sortie de Toulouse par le canal latéral n'était pas trop "dangeureuse". Des collègues nous on parlé des camps de gens du voyages pas du tout acceuillants. Avez vous vus à quel endroit c'était? Ou est-ce seulement une légende?
Ils on arlés de cous de fusils qd mm. ca m'inquiète!

Nous sommes aussi en tandem, la difference c'est que nous ce n'est pas les bagages que nous tractons dans la remorque mais le petit bout de chou ! Effectivement a la limite entre Toulouse et Fenouillet, au niveau de sesquieres, il y a un camp de gens du voyage + un camp de SdF pas tres loin du canal. Mais ce n'est pas un coupe-gorge pour autant, j'y passe regulierement et je n'ai jamais eu de probleme. Apparemment il y a eu une agression d'apres ce que certains collegues m'ont dit. En conclusion : moi je n'hesite pas a y passer, mais quand meme, autant choisir un autre endroit pour la pause pique-nique !

dans le sens Bordeaux Toulouse, attention au vent d'Autan en arrivant à Toulouse. Quand ça souffle fort, c'est une vraie plaie quand tu l'as en face ! En plus, il casse souvent des branches de platanes qui tombent sur la piste cyclable, ça peut être casse gueule.
En général, ça souffle souvent au printemps et en automne. On dit qu'il souffle 3 6 ou 9 jours de suite. Je n'ai pas vérifié si cette loi était vraie mais une ou 2 semaines de suite c'est assez courant !

Je n'ai pas rencontré de gens du voyage (si on parle de romanichel).
Par contre oui il existe un camping tenu par un agriculteur juste au bord du canal.
Dans ce camping on trouve des gens habitant dans des bus, des tentes des, tipis etc. avec des enfants ou non.
Je n'ai eu aucun pb avec eux.
j'ai croisé des gens vivant sous la tente dans au moins 3 campings lorsque j'ai fait le canal
Quand on pratique les campings pas cher, effectivement on croise (ça a été une découverte pour moi) des gens qui vivent provisoirement ou pas dans des tentes et des caravanes. Certains on les voit partir au travail le matin.
Expérience faite en région Aquitaine, Bretagne, Centre, Pyrénées il semble qu'il y ait partout désormais une population pour qui la tente, la caravane est la solution pour le logement (retraité, travailleur agricole, du batiment, étudiant, sdf, personne fuyant les cités à problème)

Merci pour ces récits, riches en renseignement. j'espere pouvoir faire notre ballade de Toulouse a Oleron, il y a malheureusement rien de sur, je rentre d'un petit tour, une boucle (Toulouse-Albi-Castres-Revel-Toulouse), 300 km en 3 jours en passant par voies vertes et véloroute, ainsi que les rigoles du canal de Revel au seuil de naurouze, malheursement sous la pluie (dur, dur !)mais tres beau, avec halte a l'hotel du midi a Revel, mais sans cassoulet !
Pour changer de sujet, je ne sait pas ce que tous les pratiquants en pensent, on apprecie les berges du canal goudronees, mais la partie en terre battue n'est pas si mal, et on ne se fait pas siffler pour dégager le passage par les cyclistes sans bagages en quete de records de vitesse comme aux abords des grandes villes ! ou sur la piste Bordeaux Lacanau....c'est un peu stressant, on est pas la pour ca :-)

Moi qui ai connu les berges en terre tout du long de Castet en Dorthe à Sètes sauf autour de Toulouse, j'ai un petit pincement au coeur parce que la piste en terre participe à l'ambiance du voyage. C'est aussi la preuve que le temps passe qu'un monde en remplace un autre. Ceci peut nous rendre nostalgique ou même nous angoisser mais je me dis que ça amène plein de gens vers le vélo et que c'est bon pour nous.
Oui c'est vrai ces pistes larges anciennes voies ferrées transformées en pistes cyclables sont des autoroutes. On doit les partager avec des coureurs cyclistes qui s'entraînent ou qui se tirent la bourre entre copains. Ils sont une gêne pour nous quand ils se veulent prioritaires et qu'ils vont vite. Il n'y a pas d'autres solution que de revendiquer ton droit à égalité avec eux. on ne va quand même pas légiférer et organiser une surveillance policière pour assurer l'égalité de partage. L'enfer c'est les autres mais c'est si bon d'être avec les autres!

Bonjour, j'habite Castres et le vélo route est un de mes points de départ vers le sud
Depuis la ville et sur 3km assez de circulation et une bonne cote à la sortie de Castres, ensuite c'est des petites routes assez calmes mais avec pas mal de relief, le fléchage est bien en place, pour les enfants je ne peux pas te conseiller

Je pens que christofen t'a tout dit, du relief, et prudence de Castres a Saix (trafic plus important), peut-etre éviter les heures de pointe en semaine.Juste a rajouter que venant d'albi vers revel j'ai un peu ramé pour trouver mon chemin dans Castres ! mais avec un plan...
Ah ! si a l'arrivée sur Revel (ou au départ selon le sens), un court passage (quelques centaines de metres) assez circulé, sinon routes de campagne sympas .
Salut, je pense 2eme semaine d'aout si tout va bien, en fonction aussi de la météo, et de la date de retour du canal du midi que nous aurons fait la semaine avant
Pour info, le departement du Tarn a crée plein d'itineraires velo, le "tarn a velo", bien fleches sur des petites routes touristiques hors circulation

Par contre, il vaut mieux regarder un peu la carte avant car comme chacun sait, les plus jolies petites routes ne sont pas necessairement les plus plates...

Je suis également une amoureuse du CANAL, à pied, à vélo.
Vous pouvez très facilement rejoindre la piste Cyclable Lapébie, à Sauveterre depuis la sortie du Canal à CASTETS en Dorthe, en passant par La Réole: qui mérite une visite.
Il n'y a que 20 km environ entre les deux pistes cyclables.
Puis, depuis Bx, toujours sur piste cyclable, vous roulez vers Lacanau et puis, vers le Nord.
On peut pratiquement arriver à La pointe de Grave (bac vers Royan) en restant sur piste cyclable.
Il y a aussi des pistes rive droit de L'estuaire, et ce serait plus court.

I’ve got my flight ticket sorted—departing in mid-November and returning in mid-March. I’ll arrive in Santiago and leave from Buenos Aires. I’ve already been to southern Argentina, specifically Torres del Paine National Park, and I’d love to go back to do the full W trek (I only did the shorter version last time). I also want to do some hiking and maybe even tackle a summit. I climb and occasionally do some mountaineering, so I’ll definitely be going with a guide.
I plan to start around Temuco in Chile, with the idea of heading toward the lakes, then taking the Carretera Austral. I’m not sure if I’ll go all the way to Ushuaia—it’s supposed to not be *that* worth it, except for the bragging rights of saying you’ve been to the end of the world.
I saw there are lakes in Argentina too.
I don’t have a precise itinerary, but what I’d love is, once I reach the southernmost point of my trip, to take a mini-cruise to see some wildlife. Any tips for that?
What kind of sleeping bag did you take? Is a 0°C (32°F) one enough? And one last question: white gas stove or can I get by with my gas stove?

I’ve gotten used to crossing Europe by bus to return by bike.
It was really convenient to take the bike without having to disassemble it.
But FlixBus no longer accepts bikes...
What alternatives do you know about?

I’m planning a bikepacking trip in a few weeks along the Véloroute V81, also known as the Vélosud, from Biarritz to Le Barcarès.
Has anyone here already done this route? Any info is welcome, whether it’s about the route itself, gear, or accommodation. I’ll prioritize staying with locals as much as possible. On that note, I just signed up for the brand-new site *Guidon et Couette* ((www.guidon-et-couette.fr)), which offers free accommodation between cyclists across the country, but there’s almost no one listed along my route!

The recent appearance of gravel suspension forks on the market might meet my needs—at least on paper. I’m particularly considering the RockShox Rudy Ultimate XPLR fork. Unlike MTB forks, its travel is short: either 30 mm or 40 mm. It weighs 1400 g, which is 400/500 g more than a steel fork.
Any thoughts or real-world feedback on this?
I’m also wondering about the durability of magnesium (lower leg) for long-distance bike touring. And what’s the impact of skipping the manufacturer-recommended maintenance every 50 and 200 hours? That’s bound to happen on a long trip unless you carry extra gear. More generally, how reliable are these kinds of forks?

I’m making an exception and creating a separate post this time, since it’s all about France. In May, we spent a week in Provence, specifically in the Luberon, exploring the cycling routes *Autour du Luberon à Vélo*, the *Véloroute du Calavon* (part of EuroVelo 8), and the shorter *Les Ocres à Vélo* route. Together, they gave us an amazing journey through rolling hills, vineyards, lavender fields still green in spring, and some of the most stunning landscapes in southern France.

It was, of course, the perched villages that impressed us the most. We visited Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Lourmarin, Ménerbes, Oppède-le-Vieux, Cucuron, and Lauris. Many of them are among the most beautiful villages in Provence, and it’s hard not to agree with that reputation.




One interesting point is the route of EuroVelo 8 in this part of the region. The official path mainly follows the old railway line of the *Véloroute du Calavon*, which is very comfortable and safe. But in our opinion, cyclists traveling EuroVelo 8 around the Mediterranean would discover even more treasures if the route passed through villages like Bonnieux, Lacoste, or Oppède-le-Vieux.


We were also pleasantly surprised by how safe cycling felt. Most of the route takes small local roads, but traffic is light, drivers are respectful, and road design really takes cyclists into account. It’s one of those places where you can ride peacefully even without separated bike lanes.

Happy owner of a Pegasus Estremo bike with a Rohloff hub, which is giving me trouble with the SF11-NCX-FT-E-LITE 700C TS 300/0 fork (serial number TD01329060). It’s starting to show its age, and I’d like to repair it to extend the life of my beloved bike.
The suspension is gone, and there’s an oil leak from the seals.
Does anyone know how to repair it? Where can I find parts that are about fifteen years old? Or where to find an identical replacement fork? Just to clarify, the Magura HS11 brakes are mounted using Firm Tech, meaning they’re on pivots behind the fork, facing the frame.

Ideally, we’d prefer a loop route starting from Antananarivo with a good chunk of it along the coast. On the bike side, we’re used to riding 6 to 8 hours a day, depending on the needs, encounters, and mood 😉 Any feedback or tips from trips around this length?

Do you have any info on the track between Amezri and Ali Ait Nito? Are the river crossings in the Tessaout still there? It's not easy to navigate with a loaded tandem... especially if the river level is high due to this year's heavy snowmelt!

I’ve been traveling for a few years now with a high-quality mountain bike, but it’s equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. I live (pedal) with the constant worry of a breakdown (leak, air bubble, heat causing the fluid to...). My bike mechanic tells me it’s impossible to switch them out for V-brakes.
What do you all think? Am I taking a big risk continuing (alone) with these brakes? Thanks in advance for your great tips!

First post here to share a quick recap of our west-to-east bike trip along Algeria’s coast in January 2025. It was just the two of us—my partner and I—with French passports and not a word of Arabic. No friends or welcoming hosts in the country.
Under those conditions, we’d strongly advise against going.
Our original plan was to follow the coast from Algiers to Tunis. We ended up cycling from Algiers to Béjaia, then took the train from Béjaia to Annaba (with a stop in Constantine), and finally biked to the border. We were tailed by police the whole way—whether on our bikes, on the train, or even on foot while exploring towns. On top of that, we couldn’t wild camp and were limited to the few state-approved hotels that accept foreigners. Under those circumstances, connecting with locals was especially tough.
With such an omnipresent and intrusive police presence, we’d definitely recommend against this destination for bike touring. A really sad situation that completely cuts you off from the local population...
We’d been warned, we went to check it out, and we weren’t disappointed!

Just a few words about the loop I did by bike in Yunnan.
Entry and exit
I entered China through the Sino-Vietnamese border crossing at Lào Cai / Hekou under the 30-day visa exemption currently available to French nationals and others.
The process was simple and quick. A Chinese police officer even helped me complete my electronic pre-registration at a computer kiosk. I wasn’t aware this formality was required—it’s similar to Thailand’s TM6.
No issues with the bike.
I left the country via the Sino-Laotian border crossing at Mohan / Boten.
The atmosphere was a bit chaotic there, but again, no problems with the bike.
The timing
I visited Yunnan in February 2026.
Weather-wise, at higher altitudes (between 1,500 and 2,000 meters), it was around ten degrees at night and in the mornings, and around twenty degrees at the hottest part of the day.
I had two days of rain, so I took the bus to keep moving. Otherwise, clear blue skies.
Culturally, Chinese New Year fell on February 17th (and the 15 days following), right in the middle of my trip. Because of this, my take on the traffic might be off.
Accommodation and food I always found a hotel to stay in for prices ranging from 8 to 15 €. Except in Kunming (the capital), where many hotels were fully booked (Chinese New Year). I ended up at a 100 € hotel with great value for money.
A bowl of noodles costs about 1.5 € on average.
Onboard electronics Since my smartphone doesn’t support eSIMs, I subscribed to a China plan with my carrier. Otherwise, for much cheaper, Alipay offers eSIMs for foreigners that allow access to services usually blocked for Chinese users (WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.).
An internet connection is essential for paying with Alipay or WeChat, as this payment method is widespread.
I only managed to use Alipay.
Either way, always carry cash because sometimes there’s no signal, or the merchant only accepts WeChat.
Also, it’s best to bring a power adapter when you arrive rather than struggling to find one.
Traffic and roads The Chinese aren’t reckless drivers. They follow traffic rules and watch out for cyclists. This is slightly less true in Xishuangbanna (the region bordering Myanmar and Laos).
In urban areas, there are almost always wide bike lanes, separated from other roads, where bikes, electric mini-scooters, and scooters share the space pretty harmoniously.
The roads are in great condition, and traffic is generally manageable—even light—except for one stretch (Eshan -> Yangwu).
Most traffic is absorbed by expressways, China’s equivalent of highways: toll roads that are off-limits to slow vehicles.
You’re never far from these expressways; sometimes you even ride alongside them, which can be noisy at times.
The climbs are usually reasonable, around 5% to 6%. From what I remember, the steepest section was between Menglun and Mengla, with gradients of 8% to 10%, sometimes more.
Riding at these altitudes—though modest—took a bit of getting used to.
The route I didn’t plan anything in advance. My only goal was to reach Kunming. I don’t know why, but just hearing the name of that city, like Yunnan, always felt dreamy to me.
Here’s the breakdown: Hekou -> Man Hao (94 km); Man Hao -> Yuanyang (64 km); Yuanyang -> Jianshui (bus); Jianshui -> Tong Hai (78 km); Tong Hai -> Chenjiang (85 km); Chenjiang -> Kunming (60 km); Kunming -> Kunyang (60 km); Kunyang -> Eshan (67 km); Eshan -> Yangwu (58 km); Yangwu -> Yuanjiang (59 km); Yuanjiang -> Pu'er (bus); Pu'er -> Dadugang (75 km); Dadugang -> Jinghong (80 km); Jinghong -> Menglun (67 km); Menglun -> Mengyuancun (51 km); Mengyuancun -> Mengla (43 km); Mengla -> Boten (67 km).

Hi there,
I’m currently looking for a bike to do my first bike trip across France, with the ultimate goal of cycling through Latin America. I’ve got a lot of questions and I’d love to hear if you have any answers or advice to share. First off, I’ve been through this before with hiking. I want to get top-quality gear right away. When I started hiking, I ended up buying everything three times—first beginner gear, then intermediate, then expert, etc. For biking, I’d prefer to skip that process and invest right now in a bike that could ideally handle Latin America. I’ve set a total max budget of around 5000 € (roughly 4000–4500 € for the bike and the rest for accessories: panniers, helmet, cycling shorts, etc.).
So, I’ve got quite a few questions:
* I’ve read in several places that some people recommend buying the bike directly in Latin America. Since I need a first bike to train in Europe, would it be better to buy an entry-level bike in France (and sell it before the big departure)? Or is it preferable to start right away with my final bike to get used to it? Is buying it there just to save a bit of money?
* For a long-term trip (around six months) in Latin America, is it better to go for a gravel bike or a mountain bike?
* Should I buy a new bike or a refurbished one? Even more so given that I’m planning a long trip—could a refurbished bike end up causing more breakdowns?
If you have any advice on models, technical features to prioritize, or recommended sellers or resellers, I’d love to hear it. I’m a total beginner—I’ve only just started watching videos and reading up on the subject, and all the technical specs are new to me!
